This is what a real legend looks like. Talented, thoroughly in love with what she's doing, and so gracious. What you see is exactly what you got in real life. Seeing her in person, you felt something so rare: electricity crackling across the footlights and sheer appreciation of her audience. This is not an impression. I have met her; I have notes from her. She was an American treasure. Two all too brief years after this, she was dead. She is sorely missed every day.
Peter Mintun, thank you for sharing this priceless video. Mary Martin is ageless, vibrant, and sexy. She is an irresistible and endearing Force of Nature. Brava, Mary!
Miss Mary Martin toward the end of life . Still showing her legs and giving off that high spirit , She was , I think she was a great grandma by that time . I cannot find anything she said that was even mildly negative about Mitzi Gaynor / South Pacific or Julie Andrews / The Sound Of Music . She did not even try to horn in on the success her son Larry Hagman . A truly unique lady . May her spirit live on .
@@chrisn7259 Yes , She was the one who was first interested in the Madam Von Trapp story and use her Broadway star pull to get it on Braodway. But the part belongs to Ms. Andrews in the movie version .
UTube interview with Larry Hagman, she interrupted him and talked over him, definitely spotlight on her only. I saw her a few times at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Columbus Ohio. Great performance, but let's not see it as a measure of character. Also find it remarkable that Larry Hagman didn't let on who his mother was during his career.
@@jackchen7003 I noticed the year she died, Dallas TV show played her ballads/songs ..a softer version during the episodes. I figured it was Larry honoring his mother. They also went to Austria in the show that year and to the home of the Captains home in the famous Sound of Music movie.
when I played "South Pacific"with mary martin on my family s 45 s I was born again...Mary was one of a kind

Mary Martin(1913-1991) was one of the great ladies of American musical theatre.

She was never considered for the film version of The Sound of Music. She was far to old by that time.
