The way this was restaged, the late Patricia Neway does the crescendo early so she shares the climax with the ensemble. But the audience is captivated, and when it comes, the applause could have stopped the show... perhaps should have. Thanks for posting. Rest in Peace Ms. Neway.

Patricia Neway one of the greatest voices to grace the Broadway stage. Can you imagine how proud she must have been to introduce this great song to the world? She was unique. The only singer with a similar splendour in her take on the role is Constance Shacklock in the original London cast recording .Constance was older than Patricia when she sang it and just retiring from her opera career, but she made a fine job of the role. Wouldn't it be nice to have real singers and no microphones on stage these day! Then we could appreciate the real sound of the voices without the distortions of technology. Glorious.

Tenortalker Nice to know that the great Constance Shacklock was in "The Sound of Music" in London. I have a live recording of Ms. Shacklock and Kirsten Flagstad, probably the greatest Wagnerian soprano of all time, singing "Tristan Und Isolde" from Covent Garden about 1951.

@@detectivefiction3701Let’s start out by saying this video is of monumental historical importance. She’s the “creator” of this now iconic role. Miss Neway WAS a soprano when she began her career. Unfortunately the long run of Magda Sorel in Menotti’s The Consul on Broadway in 1950 took a heavy toll on her voice. She does sound like a mezzo soprano here, 8 years later at age 38-39, and it was probably her choice. She darkened the color of her voice and stayed in the mezzo soprano range. Mother Abbess can be sung well by all operatic mezzo sopranos. The role sits in the upper stretches for only 2 or 3 measures, and requires nothing higher than one high A-flat.

The original Broadway production of "The Sound of Music", starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, opened in 1959 and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. I was 10 years old and already collecting Broadway musicals on L.P. records. I bought "The Sound of Music" with Mary Martin and Patricia Neway and loved every song on the record. There is so little film of the truly great broadway legends. True, Mary was not young but she was stellar. And Patricia Neway should have also done the film as she could act and was a great mezzo soprano. Peggy Wood is an old favorite of mine but she was not singing in the film, The dubbed voice did not have this sublime quality.

Oh, yeah, that's better! I've been plodding through all kinds of versions and this one's one of the better ones. This song can be awfully boring, especially in the very first phrase, which presents a challenge since that's when the singer courts the audience. Each note has to be filled up from the top down and bottom up at the same time. She does this superbly. Each note has to lead, full, to the next full note, which echoes and fulfills the lyric. Masterful. Honorable mentions to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (a very different approach) and, knock me over with a feather, Tony Bennett of all people. But he does have that low/high split in his notes.

+4260laurel I was schooled by them. More than half left in the 70's it was all too much. They couldn't take it. Many went in and realized they did not know all they gave up. Some went in to live in a protected environment,Sorry, but they were in a fantasy world thinking this was to be their life. there are very few nuns left now and none in the Catholic high school I went to back then. It is run by all lay teachers. same with the grammar parochial school.

+Brooke Hanley as was I, and still work with many communities today- but it is not a fantasy world- and still, shame on you.
There are many new to the orders- but true, not in America, The nuns should have schooled you better!

4260laurel No, SHAME on you for not accepting a reality. Why did so many leave? Maybe for you it was a true calling and not a fantasy, but with the ones I saw they did not make the cut and several in grammar were downright abusive they were so frustrated. Physically inflicting injury. Do not judge lest ye be judged. Save your shame on you's.

This comes from an era when singers really could could sing acoustically. Not aided by microphones and auto tune. We have lost much!

re Tatiana Troyanos: Sound of Music was just before she went to EUROPE to build her opera career. The MET came many years later (not till 1976 -- a LONG wait!).

Alison W Ames How strange with Troyanos, as Patricia Neway sounds very similar to Troyanos with her quick vibrato and warm luscious chest voice!

Listen to Neway's To This We've Come' from Menotti's "The Consul" for a breathtaking experience.

"The Consul" is a great opera, and Ms. Neway's performance in the starring role of Magda Sorel is a classic.

Mie saan voimaa Sound of music:in kappaleesta "Climb up the Mountain". Yllättävän usein sitä pitää nykyisin kuunnella ja voimaantua.

Patricia Neway was the greatest even though she didn't modulate after the second bridge like she did on the recording. But still the best version.
Another great LIVE performance was by the late Celene Pérez who sadly passed in 2020.😢
