Thank you! Very helpful information and explained very well. We recently bought a home with a deck and are hoping to one day have a screened-in porch put in. This answered our questions about how we should and shouldn't go about that.

Existing decks can be modified to add a roof or structure and meet code. You don't necessarily have to demolish the whole structure and start from scratch.

True but the cost to modify may not be much different than replacing the deck since a lot of times you can't access the posts and footers without removing the decking

@@hop2ithomeservicesllc58 In those cases removing a few deck boards is still cheaper than replacing the deck

Thank You, for sharing that information. I really appreciate your video being so informative, I have asked several handymen about this very question, and some I got the deer in the headlight stare, those I would never hire. Others I got quadruple the price of what we paid for the original one six months earlier.

Same here. My deck is on concrete slab and people still say it's not doable. Seems that this is a very complex thing, too expensive, or rarely done. On youtube every construction is so easy (mostly): plenty of DIY videos of people adding Lean-To or enclosed patios.

I am enclosing my existing 12x20ft deck in New Bern, NC area. I am using 4x4 posts and 2x8's. I planned on screening my deck in and using plywood and shingles on top of the 2x8 joist spaced 24" apart. I plan on putting a 22ft 2x8 ledger board on my house just below the sofit. The angle is slight. I secured to 4x4 post against the 6x6 deck posts and cemented 4x4 posts in ground as far as a could which is about 12" deep until I encountered concrete base from the 6x6 posts. I used lag bolts to secure 4x4 posts to 6x6 post. I used carriage bolts to secure 2x8's on top of the 4x4 posts. Do you recommend this or should I just start over with expensive 6x6 posts secured? Thanks for any advice. I have photos of existing work if you need to see before advising.

If the existing footers meet load requirements, there’s no reason why a homeowner should have to rip down a perfectly good deck just to reconstruct one with a roof.

Correct but not many decks are built to meet the uplift and load requirements that are required for a covered deck or screen porch. If the posts are not mechanically attached to the footing or in concrete (which even set in concrete they still may not pass in some areas) then it doesn't meet code for a roof

I am building a roof on an existing deck but the deck post were set in concrete because it is stupid not to. Code in minimum requirements. Just doing the minimum is why it does not last.

Question, we live in NC, Lexington area, when we built our deck 30+ years ago we put our post in concrete. So are you saying we can put a roof over the existing deck then? If the answer is yes, how or where do we put the post for the new roof? On top of deck post or existing deck? BTW At the time the inspector told my husband the way the deck was built we could add a room on it.

What if you build the deck first. Then build the roof with beefier posts that are sunk in the ground in front of the deck?

It's possible but it would have to be built to be free standing and completely independent of the deck. The issue there would be resistance to uplift and racking
