I am enclosing my existing 12x20ft deck in New Bern, NC area. I am using 4x4 posts and 2x8's. I planned on screening my deck in and using plywood and shingles on top of the 2x8 joist spaced 24" apart. I plan on putting a 22ft 2x8 ledger board on my house just below the sofit. The angle is slight. I secured to 4x4 post against the 6x6 deck posts and cemented 4x4 posts in ground as far as a could which is about 12" deep until I encountered concrete base from the 6x6 posts. I used lag bolts to secure 4x4 posts to 6x6 post. I used carriage bolts to secure 2x8's on top of the 4x4 posts. Do you recommend this or should I just start over with expensive 6x6 posts secured? Thanks for any advice. I have photos of existing work if you need to see before advising.

My attic temp is now usually within 12-14 degrees of the outside temperature hottest part of the day and year maybe 20 degrees hotter for an hour ish. During the evening and all morning long my attic temp tracks with the outside temp. that's year round so in the Midwest I don't have a 60 degree attic when it's 30 in winter and it takes longer to heat up cools down quicker now too. All of this was accomplished by proper venting. I'm so glad I didn't get a fan but I did have to do quite a bit of work to get it this way. My utility bill has gone down and comfort level of my house is great. On a side note when I bought the house I wondered why it would be 70 outside but 80 in the house and it would get hotter as the night progressed.lol now I know why good luck to you all

In South Florida attic fans are worthless. All they do is suck up conditioned interior air and become a hazard with hurricanes. Passive ventilation is what works best in the humid tropics.

Also, regardless, if you have an attic fan or not, it's a good idea to seal up all of your plumbing holes, electrical boxes, light switches, ceiling fans etc. Make specific gaskets for this purpose, and they do help

This is such a broad statement. There are so many factors that play in on whether or not attic fans are good fit for you. For example, if you live in a extremely dry, extremely hot place such as Texas to attic fans are the way to go one pulling in air from the outside into the attic and the other pushing the air outside to maintain the attic temperature the same as the outside rather then 170°, which then radiates into your home

My house has a perforated soffit, however behind that is solid osb with no venting. For 1000sqft I have a pair of 2ft by 3ft gable vents. I have 60,000btu of AC. At 96F outside, with the ACs running for the previous 4 hours it was 78F at 67% humidity. After the attic fan it was 117F outside, in the living room 68F, 47% to 57% humidity, and the AC often turned off because it had hit the set temperature. I have fiberglass batts in the attic and intend to install blown in fiberglass when it cools down so I can stand the temperature up there. The rafters are 24 inches apart, 26 inches on center, so next to each fiberglass batt I can see 2 inches of clean sheetrock, or 10 inches of clean sheetrock when they used fiberglass batts for 16 inch stud spaces.

I have seen a few people talk about this but they aren't in california. I have this fan:2940 CFM Smart App Controlled 2-Speed Gable Mount Attic Fan. IT rocks. I don't run the air conditioner much if at all when its on. Today I was home all day, it was 85F outside and in the attic it went from 120-96 with the fan on and it was 77 in the house. I've seen guys using faulty logic. These fans do wonders in california, I can see the benefits being less if the outside temps were over 100f. When its just 75 f outside the attic could be over 100with the attic fan on that cools off and keeps a cushion between the roof and the ceiling. Yes, my 1956 house has lots of lower vents. lol I can't recommend this fan more. I will say, I had to get a larger dormer vent because the original one was limiting how much air could be exhausted.

We have geothermal heating and ac system which why is great for heating does a poor job really cooling our house. Since we had continuous soffit venting it has been an amazing addition to our system. You can always add venting to the home and just clearing the hot air in the attic alone is worth it for us.

I have two wind turbines on my roof (but no wind here in CA) and was wondering if I can put a fan by one to pull air out and a fan by the other to pull air in. Would that be a good solution to ventilate my attic? Thank you so much!

Question, we live in NC, Lexington area, when we built our deck 30+ years ago we put our post in concrete. So are you saying we can put a roof over the existing deck then? If the answer is yes, how or where do we put the post for the new roof? On top of deck post or existing deck? BTW At the time the inspector told my husband the way the deck was built we could add a room on it.

Unless very short of soffits, attic fan benefits despite slight negative pressure and drawing air from home. The culprit is not attic fan and the remedy is to add soffits/lower level ventilation rather than blaming attic fans.

It's 2023 in pa. Feb Three estimates I got for 12×12 square, four steps, wood picket railing, easy access to site, three feet up. Just my material is 3200-3600. That's just for a standard wood square deck. Nothing fancy. Multiply that by labor which seems to be 30-70 or 40-60 percentage wise. Yeah it's ridiculous! They were starting at 7-8 grand. It was shocking. Finally I had a BBB accredited builder who has been in the business 34 years. Is known on Angie list, houzz etc.. One of those builders you just gotta use. His company is stellar (my last estimate ) I just told him the truth. He kinda seen the job, and lifted up his eye brows small job, basic, not alot to be gained from his standpoint. They all kinda felt that way. It may me feel better though because I knew this man wasn't taking my money and leaving. He didn't NEED the job. That's for sure. Anyway to the original point. I just said look, this isn't about me needing a deck, I'm alone, one income, I can't sleep at night in debt. So it's not that I'm cheap. I'm just alone, and I need property value my budget is between 4-5k. Well he kinda stood there. Thanked me for being honest, we chatted, and I felt like.. Well I'm not getting a deck. Unless he has pity on me. It's also Feb. This could help. They slow down in Pa in Feb. Weather is nice though... He gave me the estimate. 5100 four steps, wood picket railing, standard deck. I could of cried. The materials are at 3500. He only asked for 3 to start. After what I've seen, I've been given a gift. Decks not even trek, are really really expensive. Sorry for the long post but people should know, today in 2023 in Pa, prices are not what they were. As a side note Trek is nice but it does change colors. It also could turn white in heavy trafficked areas. The sheen lifts. There are some cons. Couldn't afford it, but I can always cover it later on, if my finances improve. A 12×12 trek today, here is around 10-12 STARTING. So yeah... That was a big no. Gotta be grateful for what I'm getting. And I certainly am. Next year this same deck will probably double

Others I got quadruple the price of what we paid for the original one six months earlier.

What about this scenario: 1950's cape cod; one side has three roof vents (not a ridge vent) and other side has no vents on roof, but there are two windows/grills at each end of the two runs with a master bedroom splitting the two. Also has a gable vent at the top peak. Upstairs gets extremely hot in summer and seems to be a bit of moisture in the winter. The home does not have soffit ventilation. Is an attic fan appropriate here? Thank you!!

I am building a roof on an existing deck but the deck post were set in concrete because it is stupid not to. Code in minimum requirements. Just doing the minimum is why it does not last.

Our fan is in the laundry room installed by the builder with a pin timer in the garage. How often and how long should it run?

It's rated by cfm not by SQ feet of fan that doesn't mean anything one fan will be 600 cfm and another with the same squat foot will be 1200 cfm

Intresting...never looked at it that way,,got a question though,,not challenging your knowledge jus curious to know,,you stated heat rises which is fact,,if the heat is generated in the attic from the sun radiated heat correct so heat in home comes from the heat in the attic correct? Because im trying to figure if you can control the heat source which i feel would be in the attic then inside the home will be cooler,,,but i do agree some cooling loss doing so with attic fan venting the heated attic from the sun,,,,guess its a catch 22 lol tit for a tat??? What if you build the deck first. Then build the roof with beefier posts that are sunk in the ground in front of the deck?

If the existing footers meet load requirements, there’s no reason why a homeowner should have to rip down a perfectly good deck just to reconstruct one with a roof.

Does your pricing described in your video include digging and pouring footers?

Existing decks can be modified to add a roof or structure and meet code. You don't necessarily have to demolish the whole structure and start from scratch.

So if there’s an elevated deck of 27x16, that’s 430sq but it’s also an addition, with railings of course but the old deck was smaller so if I were to do it for $60 per sq, that’d be $25,800 plus $1,000 for demo and it has 7 steps, so about $1,200 for the stairs? And since it’s an addition, it needed more foundation for the new addition for support and you said in a comment to add 15% more for an elevated deck so more or else, it would be about $30,000-31,000? Cz that sounds like a lot of money for a deck. Am I wrong here? If you could help, that’d be great, thank you!
