I don't play half the instruments you own (or even 1/4 for that matter), and yet I find myself always intrigued at your videos. I love what you've got going here. I'm a trombonist myself.
I don't even play a brass instrument and I'm still fascinated by the instruments he shows. Great channel, has definitely inspired me to learn the trombone once I've finished my current viola grade
You should do like a one man brass band video, like your "all instruments in a brass band video" however they're all edited and put together so you play a song with all the parts does that make sense? I just think it would be an awesome video to go along with all your awesome reviews! Keep up the good work!
Opinion - Start out these review-isk videos with you playing the instrument. One of my favorite parts of these videos is listening to the instrument and it would be cool if you played it a bit earlier in the video. Thanks for posting these interesting videos!
I have a European-style rotary-valve Baritone horn made in the USSR around 1961. It's plated, not in silver... but in Nickel. The sound it produces is just astonishing, and thankfully the valves all work well (albeit a bit clunky). The sound rivals an English-style Euphonium, even though the bore is smaller. I love it! You can find them on Ebay pretty cheap- about 75 USD. Mine was cheaper (50 USD) because it's dented up and it had a small bolt lodged in the 3rd valve tubing... took out the 3rd valve slide, blew hard, and it came shooting out!
Hey I just got this cornet for my collection of trumpet and cornets that I have. The one I just got is from 1985 and the valve caps are red😂. Mine is also not lacquered and the 3rd valve is letting me down too😂
Moses Singletary that's... literally why it's called a "socialist republic" or a "people's republic". It's not a federal or democratic republic, it's socialist.
@InvalidNumeral Federalism and socialism are not mutually exclusive things, and nevermind that at one point, the individual states were Federated Socialist Republics.
Hi Trent! I was going to drop a comment about the similarities between this design and the Raven, and then you mentioned it yourself and felt like a goof. This is a neat instrument, though, thanks for showing it.
When I was at Northwestern, Charlie Geyer once showed me a side action rotary valve cornet that he was trying to sell that had once belonged to Vince Cichowicz. It too took a trumpet mouthpiece, and the only marking on it was the word ЛЕНИНГРАД (Leningrad) on the bell. The horn had a really cool sound, and I wish I'd had the money for it.
Sounds like this instrument is meant to take something resembling a German shank Flugelhorn mouthpiece of the somewhat shallow variety. (Or just use a crappy 6M or 6V.) It's definitely not liking that Trumpet mouthpiece very much. My experience with Soviet instruments is that the primary design choice is to be loud as hell, everything else is secondary, and quality is last. That's not to say that they necessarily sound bad or have bad intonation, because they don't. It is to say that they are low quality and might require some extremely tasteless repairs to maintain. A bit of filing on the third valve linkage to give it more space to slip would probably work if you don't value the nickle plating. It has to have room to wobble on the screw that attaches it to the rotor.
Bought one of these. 1) Don't buy one of these. All 3 rotors turn the wrong direction! 2) This model is Ukrainian, not Russian. The brand is Орфей, which is usually translated to Orpheus. 3) Yes, it takes a 10mm shank mouthpiece. The stock mouthpiece isn't horrible, but I've spoiled myself beyond being able to tolerate it for long. It's 80mm long instead of 70mm, and the cup is typical of European Cornet mouthpieces. My suggestion of 6M or 6V was actually spot on. If you want a GOOD mouthpiece for this, better get ready to pony up, because it will cost more than the horn. $$$ 4) Like most Soviet instruments, the build quality is trash, but it can play really well with great intonation if you do your part. The tone is pretty brash for what most people expect from a Cornet, but that's what having such a big leadpipe does for you. All in all, it would be one of the best budget Cornets ever if the rotors weren't constantly ruining your articulation.
Wow, i didn't know that rotary cornets exist :D I know rotary trumpets, very common in orchestras (at least in Germany) and in the older generations. That is an interesting instrument :)
BTW: Nice cornet playing. Do you have brass band experience? That vibrato totally reminded me of the time when I played in a brass band. I used to hate vibrato and now I love to apply it on the trumpet, at least a little here and there
Amazing :D I was first introduced to Brass Bands when we watched "Brassed Off" (great movie) at school and then later the piece was performed at the theatre here in my city. They formed a Brass Band with a few professional muscians and many other interested people. Actually there are quite a few people from England, as well. I've seen numbers and there are probably like 20 000 bands in GB while there are more like 20 in Germany. I played cornet for a year, I'd love to play again, but I don't really know if I can make it and do all the practising required for playing Solo Cornet :D . How well does it work to play soprano cornet and bass trombone? Last time I checked playing trombone felt super weird on my lips. However I've heard trumpet players that said they really like to play Euphonium and perform trumpet concertos on that instrument (transposed by an octave) and it even helps them in the high register :)
Any chance of getting rid of a trombone or two XD I love your videos and still find it astounding how people can do reviews on stuff like this, and so many of them
Can you make a video on how to hit the third octive on a Bb trumpet? I'm in advanced 8th grade band and I'm the only trumpet and I need to hit the high notes but it seems impossible
The third octave is something you have to work to get. You just have to practice and develop your aperture to play and hit those high notes reliably and accurately. This is what my private teacher told me when i started on trumpet a couple years ago i found it helped me to get it. Good luck on your playing!
INFINITE AMOUNTS OF LIP SLURS seriously do lip slurs in higher registers EVERY day for about 5 minutes before you practice and in no time you'll find it is a lot easier to hit high notes.... or you could just sing the high notes through your trumpet and hope nobody notices. either one works!
I just acquired this exact horn for my collection, except in silver lacquer. The owner thought it was from 1973, but I couldn't find any info but a small blurb in Russian inscribed on the inside of the case. These cornets came out of Korostyshiv, Ukraine. Hope this helps you pin down the origins, Спасибо!
I remember a long time back I had a piccolo trombone named perry (I had to sell for rent) i wish I could find one again where do you find these instruments?
He's done a review on the soprano trombone before. And yes, it is a soprano trombone. Not a slide trumpet. He also has a video explaining the reasoning behind that naming scheme.
Hi, I enjoy you r channel very much! One thing I would like to say/ask: My teacher learns me not to use the middle part of my fingers on the valves but the tops of my fingers, yet you seem to use the middle part of your finger without any problem does this not apprehend you in anyway?
Not that it matters, but those dotted quaver - semi quaver rythmns were rather interesting (ie: wrong). Otherwise interesting video, nice to see something a bit different! (I know the feeling on the raw brass, playing a prototype at the moment which is unplated, love the instrument but hate the lack of finish).
Re quality and design issues: "As long as they pretend to pay us, we'll pretend to work' ~~ USSR workers cliche. Not to be confused with our cliched expression in Canada when running into quality issues: "It's amazing what minimum wage can do to the human mind."
Hey trent! this is the earliest I've been to your channel and you inspire me to play trumpet! i tried to get the Tromba Plastic trumpet but i didn't get to :( anyways hi!

Don't buy expensive beginner horns. They're a scam. Learn how to play on a cheap ass used horn, and get as good as you can on that. Then it'll be time to get a professional horn. So you should have a beginner horn for about 2-4 years before upgrading.
raw finish = wax it with a high Carnuba wax. This line was recommended by a friend on the Trombone Forum www.mothers.com/02_products/05550-05750.html#&slider1=9. There's an English brand, the name evades me, that you might find. look for 100% Carnuba for durability. That bell joint sounds unseemly
"I would expect them to be red if anything" made my day lol
ohhhh! now i get it!
It could be possible than the plastic faded. Soviet plastics are quirky, to say the least
Damn I have no idea why but I've just completely fallen in love with that instrument...
"Nyet, glorious Soviet mouthpiece is fine. Cut by babushka on lathe made from Moskovitch engine."
Lada engine works just fine as well comrade

Sweet. I've received a few comments in a similar vein. I'll ensure I do that in future.
You should do a review on the USSR tuba. Havent been able to find anything and have been considering starting a collection of instruments
I enjoyed your playing of this cornet, Trent. The tone was lovely. I'd like to see your other cornet videos.
Trent! Don't you know the old saying? In Soviet Russia nothing was built for quality or comfort.
Very good cornet

Is it just me, or did you gain 600+ subs in the past 3 days? That's insane!
400 over the last week :)
Drowsee it's because Trent's awesome
I WOULD expect that horn to have a very heavy Syphilis scent...
Al Cass makes EVERYthing stink better
Could have played the Anthem of the Soviet Union (which is also the same tune as the current anthem of the Russian Federation).
Hey I just got this cornet for my collection of trumpet and cornets that I have. The one I just got is from 1985 and the valve caps are red😂. Mine is also not lacquered and the 3rd valve is letting me down too😂
I heve the one from 1865 lol
United States of Soviet Russia? Wasn't it Union of Soviet Socialist Republics?
He said he wasn't great at history xD

I want this so bad lmao plus good job Trent with all the subs so far
Hi Trent! I was going to drop a comment about the similarities between this design and the Raven, and then you mentioned it yourself and felt like a goof. This is a neat instrument, though, thanks for showing it.
You should have done a Shostakovitch piece :(
Trent has one of the best Brass Instrument videos
“The United States of Soviet Russia”
I was definitely expecting that reference to the Raven!
I play euphonium and I'm in first chair,I love your videos you've helped me a lot
You are so cool I appreciate your love for music and Instruments
Whatever you can squeeze music out of is good. I'd have you and this cornet in my band.
It sounds lovely. That said, I expect that you have plenty of nice instruments, so restoring this might not be high up your priority list.
When I was at Northwestern, Charlie Geyer once showed me a side action rotary valve cornet that he was trying to sell that had once belonged to Vince Cichowicz. you're a great instrument player 👍👍👏👏👏👏😊😊😊
I wonder if you added a bit of tape or wrap to the linkages of it would brace them better and prevent bending of them better.
i reccomend you turn up the volume on your mic
Same here;I can barely hear it and I have my volume maxed out.

Hi mate, yes, I have brass band experience; euphonium, tenor trombone, bass trombone, soprano cornet, cornet, and currently conducting a brass band.
Amazing :D I was first introduced to Brass Bands when we watched "Brassed Off" (great movie) at school and then later the piece was performed at the theatre here in my city. i bought one exactly the same of a random in a kiev street

Very nice tone. Makes up for it's other deficiencies.
can you post a link to the sheet music you used
great video, comrade.
Poor third valve. Such a lovely piece regardless.
LMAO I was literally playing this piece today and preforming it soon

I saw this myself on Ebay a few months ago and thought it looked interesting
Hey Trent, where do you get such a large array of instruments? I've seen many of your videos and wonder where do you get these strange fascinations?
I scour auction sites :)
Intro music?
I just acquired this exact horn for my collection, except in silver lacquer. look up TARV (top action rotary valve) trumpet/cornet or mellophone
I remember a long time back I had a piccolo trombone named perry (I had to sell for rent) i wish I could find one again where do you find these instruments?
Where do you find all these weird and wonderful instruments?
2:17 I see how it is...
Can you do a review of a slide trumpet?
He's done a review on the soprano trombone before. And yes, it is a soprano trombone. Not a slide trumpet. He also has a video explaining the reasoning behind that naming scheme.
I know about that, I was just wondering about the renaissance slide trumpet. It's an actual trumpet, but the lead pipe slides like a trombone.
Gurt The Great Whoops. My bad! Those are actually really cool instruments.
union of soviet socialist republics not united states of soviet russia
Sorry, my bad.
Your way is better.
Lol before I read on wikipedia I thought it was United Socialist States of Russia
I thought it was a joke when he said that
I was gonna say
I've never seen this! Interesting!!
Trent what is a good website where I can buy instruments
does anyone know where to find the sheet music for this? or who wrote it?
Can you review a normal sousaphone if you can thank you in advance
Hi, I enjoy you r channel very much! One thing I would like to say/ask: My teacher learns me not to use the middle part of my fingers on the valves but the tops of my fingers, yet you seem to use the middle part of your finger without any problem does this not apprehend you in anyway?
I have an Amati cornet that says that it was made in the Czech Republic... My teacher says it is very good quality.
Where can i find a case for one of these?
you should get a shargel superbone and do a review of it
Not that it matters, but those dotted quaver - semi quaver rythmns were rather interesting (ie: wrong).

What song did you play in this video?
Despite everything its sound is very pleasing to the ear.
I got a great question what was the song for the intro
That final bit sounds a LOT like Harry James' Trumpet Concerto...
Do you remember what size trumpet mouthpiece you used?
I started with one of this!!!
Where do usually get your trumpet exerpts from? I really like them. Amazing sound btw!! love your vids
I have a massive stack of sheet music from my grandfather, and I've also collected a fair stack over the years.

try a euphemism mouthpiece on Barry sax
euphonium
dank memes 4 u I totally would use euphemism mouth pieces kek
Is no no euphemism's are my spirit animal
An unseemly seam?
Seems so.
Lots of these on eBay recently from Ukraine. Been wondering about how they worked.
awesome
thats Ukirainian song "The Cossack traveled for the Danube".
Thank you SOOOO much, I've been trying to find the name but I couldn't

You still haven't done a FRENCH HORN video
That trumpet sounds perfect for "God is a Serb"
*cornet (not trying to be rude but there is a difference in between a trumpet and a cornet.) I do play Cornet irl so ppl do confuse it with a trumpet.
The thumbnail makes it look like you're wearing a trumpet hat
trumpet mouthpieces are ssssooooooo much easier to use than cornet mouthpieces
I have a Conn, two Holton's and a York Perfectone. But I'm afraid I'm going to have to pass on Soviet Cornets
*The United States of Soviet Russia*
Just bought one of these off ebay but platted.
This is our cornet
Sounds just like a trumpet
My band room has a 60 year old cornet 🤣
I like the concept of an upright rotary valve trumpet, but this Russian cornet sounds awful... Good video Trent.
Check out the new Schagerl 'Raven' trumpet. Same concept but better by a mile. Well, probably a 1000 miles...
I actually have one of these
I love´t wen schaergl says that invented a new system revolutionary trumpet. This, and other old horns (i mean clearly old) are the prove of that. 😜
im learning grand russian fantasia so I can play it in year 13
New Zealand? Got that kiwi accent braa
i selected this video solelg because USSR
Why do you have a smile embouchure....?
looks like a prototype to me.
