  • A complete dis-assembly of a Richmond Gear Super T10 4 speed including a lesson on snap rings. The ST10 was originally made by Borg Warner, then Doug Nash and Richmond Gear. Richmond was sold to Midwest Truck and this is the latest version. I will be assembling my own units for sale.

    I just bought a previously rebuilt T-10 in which 1st gear and cluster succumbed to a 400HP BB Chevy. I purchased your book and it's on the way. The video is great; a regular guy willing to share with the rest of us. I do that all the time in my shop, especially when it comes to engine building. Most people can't do it, but they love to learn how it's done. Thanks!

    Thank you Paul for providing the great how to video on this Super T-10 Trans! I'm currently rebuilding a super t with the 3:42 first. The only problem I had when dropping the counter gear was that the input shaft would not come out of the case with the bearing. The bearing would hit the counter gear. I figured out I had to tap out the input shaft from the bearing first. I have both your books on Muncies and manual transmissions and they are very helpful.

    I had a super T10 in an old 69 camaro I had back in the 80's. Some guy challenged me and just to show him, I stripped every tooth off 2nd gear on the cluster and more than half of the teeth off 2nd gear.
    I may have dropped the clutch a tad too hard on that one. Tore it all apart and found the last cluster in stock in Oregon and was back up in a couple weekends.
    Ahhh, youth and stupidity.

    Very informative video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on these transmissions. I have a car with the super T 10 Tranny. I would like to make this car have quicker shifts but my car didn't come with the second notch on the levers, it is a 1980 model Vette. Would you happen to know if there are any short throw levers available to place on this tranny or do I have to purchase a hurst shifter? I know earlier vettes with this tranny had 2 notches so you were able to lower to the bottom notch for quicker shifts. Why they did away with this great feature, who knows. Probably a money thing.

    Again great easy to follow instruction on how to "PROPERLY" tear down a T-10.
    By the way I need to order some parts from you can you post your contact info or post where is the best place to find your contact info for parts etc. ?
    I do have a question for you that I am sure many of your followers would like your opinion on.
    It was widely thought in the late 60's and all throughout the 70's that the 2 best transmissions to run in a Street / Strip car for performance was of course the Muncie Rock Crusher or the Borg-Warner T-10 that came out of Big Block cars....either the Aluminum or Cast Iron Cased versions...(alot of guys who drag raced their cars on a regular basis actually prefered the cast Iron main cased unit with the cast iron cover plate because of the strength of the case....they would give up the difference in weight for the added safety of the much heavier cast iron main case....I personally never saw any 4 spd blow up so badly that it put windows in the main case but It did happen just not that I experienced or saw so I always ran the Aluminum Case but to each his own....I saw far more of the Aluminum GM bell housings scatter and go flying thru floor pans ....again I always ran and still do aftermarket steel SFI blow proof housings....its easy enough to get one recertified so no big deal.)....now back to my question,
    Which Specific T-10 in your opinion is as good as the Muncie Rock Crusher in a high torque drag racing application ?
    I am just looking for your personal opinion....we all know when hearing stories about guys hot rods they had back when they were kids....EVERY MUNCIE PUT IN EVERY GM MUSCLE CAR WAS A FREAKING ROCK CRUSHER....LOL When the truth is the Rock Crusher came along with the birth of the Chevy Big Block engines....and most of the Muscle cars from GM that came from the factory with a Big Block, because of the huge amount of torque they made came already equiped with the "Rock Crusher" Muncie 4 spd. From Vette's to Nova's if it came original with a 396, 402, 427, 454 it had a M-22 or 23 nicknamed "Rock Crusher" Muncie 4 spd as its original transmission but thats ok we all know how stories get started and changed over the years lol.....so just in your own opinion what T-10 was or could be made into the equal or better than A good old Rock Crusher ?
    It still floors me when you hear guys talking about what gearbox they run in their car and how much Horsepower it handles.....when its more how much torque it can stand up to without stripping the teeth off their input shaft or 2 gear....lol
    Thanks again for you taking the time to do these videos,
    I look forward to doing buisness with you for the parts we need.
    R.C. "Charlie" Hill

    Great Videos!! Im really curious to know about the real strength of one of these new richmond units vs Properly built Muncie. I recently bought a 2.64 st10 and its being put in an 11 second 327 sbc car. Is the case and midplate design able to handle the power? The trans would never be shifted hard and is going to be a street terror now instead. It looks to me as though the midplate is just cast material.. do you have any opinion on the areas of weekness in this unit? curious to know about the machining quality in terms of centerlines being relative to eachother.. i Would love to send it to you so strengthen it if there are any possible improvements to be made. thanks for the detailed videos. I can tell you very educated in the field.

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  8 місяців тому

      To unbolt a side cover takes only a few minutes. Since you have to remove the tail.. and change the gasket and you will get a gasket and seal kit it would be to your advantage to remove the cover and replace the seals. If you dont do that keep the teansmission faciang down and lift off the tail. Make sure the inside reverse tthrust washer doesn't drop into the case.

    Hello. I have an old 1962 pontiac t-10 long tailshaft. I think the front end of main shaft is worn down where the front roller bearings fit over it from the main input shaft. Do you know what size the end of shaft is supposed to be? Mine mic's out at .713 thousandths. and if worn out do the make larger roller bearings to fit it? I can't find a long tailshaft any where. Mine measures 25" long

    • @GearBoxVideo

      If the shaft end is worn it will be pitted. They have a hardened surface that is only. 030" thick. You can use oversize bearings. Just find a good used shaft. They come up on Ebay from time to time

    What kind of bushing do you use to replace the tail housing bushing since it was so loose? You mentioned using a double lipped seal earlier. Just wondering if there is an upgraded tail housing bushing.

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  10 років тому

      Some bushings vary in size. The bushing in the video appeared to be damaged. The new bushings fit better. You should only have about .005 clearance, basically the ID of the bushing should be no more than .005" larger than the OD of the yoke.

    Hello. I have a super t10 I'm looking for more strength while I have it out of the car. I read swapping my aluminum main case for a cast iron case will make it stronger considerably. My question is can I use a t10 main case. I understand the countergear shaft may need to be cut out to 1inch from 7/8 but will it work?

    • @GearBoxVideo

      You really can't make used gears stronger. You can make a case more rigid by getting and Iron case.

    hi. I have a question. I have a 1965 Muncie. I need to replace just the front input shaft bearing. Is there a way to just pull it off from the front and leave the input shaft in place? Or do I really need to take the whole thing apart?? thanks for any help. r

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  9 років тому

      +guppypuppy2 The front bearing uses a left hand threaded gland nut. You need a special wrench to remove it, or you can chisel it off. You can pry out the bearing with 2 screwdrivers. Sometimes they slide off, or you will need a puller. To replace the front bearing you have to be careful that you just don't hammer it down into place and squash the maindrive synchro ring. Usually you will need the bearing, nut and new front retainer gasket. You need to always use gaskets on those retainers, since they take up the gap and support the retainer properly. If your careful you can use a pipe wrench to tighten the new nut into place.

      +GearBoxVideo hi. Wow I didn't think you would reply that quick!!! LOL I think your in Fl.? Its pretty late over there.. Go dolphins. Yes I need to get that thin wrench and new nut to put on. I just hope I know how tight to make the nut. And know when the bearing is in the proper place on the shaft. and yes I have the gasket as well. :) Love the videos and im really thinking about buying your book and dvd. If I can completely restore an old car why shouldn't I be able to rebuild my own transmissions.... oh and do you ever work on mopar 4speeds? a833. Like a 70 roadrunner. sell rebuild kits? thanks ron

      guppypuppy2 My first book, Building and Modifying High Performance Manual Transmissions covers the A833. You can order the books from my website. Nothing is charged in real time. So if you want both books, I'll throw in the DVD for free and sent it out free media mail. Just order the 2 books at www.5speeds.com/cart or I believe they are on Amazon. There is no way to get the nut to a specific torque spec. I tend to tighten it and shock it tight with a hammer and use threadlocker on it.

    Also do you really need to use that expensive oil or can you just use 90 140 wt. oil like we used to back in the 60s. In the repair manual you can download it says to use petroleum grease rather than gear grease?. Its been 25 years since I did MUNCIE and I just used gear grease to hold things together and 90 weight oil. Is this just a lot of hype and trying to sell expensive oil? I did a lot of these Muncie back in the 60s and 70s. Last one I fixed the guy bought it rebuilt from someone not knowing what was going on and it took 3 clutches out of his 58 vette. I figured they left the oil slinger off the input shaft as oil was all over the front. He bought a rebuilt kit with gaskets and new brass rings. Well I took it all apart and first thing no oil slinger which I told him you need that to keep the oil from coming pass the input shaft and the brass rings would not help the grinding going into gears as all the gears teeth and the slinders and gears were all ground up and only half there. You know what I mean. Anyhow I did what he wanted and he got the oil slinger from the guy who forgot to put it together. I really didn't want to do it because he needed so many parts it be better to buy a new super T10 . Back then a new t10 was like 1200 dollars. I fixed the leak he said but it still didn't shift good and would jump outa gear at times. I said I told you it would. BTW I like your videos very very much. If I ever do another I know were to buy quality parts from. That for sure. There is soo much junk out there nowdays you don't know were to buy good parts. I hear you about ebay and such places. I had a race buddy as I drag race to and he bought a new set of ready to bolt on AR heads for his 460. I said bring them to me and I'll redo the valve job and check things out. He just bolted them on and it ran like crap. He took them off and I went over to his house and got brake cleaner and sprayed down the runner and it just leaked past the valves. Took a pen light and you could see light threw the valve seat and valve. He was mad as he said I bought them for 2200 dollars so I could just bolt them on. That was like 20 years ago. I told him you have to check that stuff out and the valve springs were junk to. He called AR and they would not do a then as they told him you should check that stuff out before you bolt them on. He said I bought complete heads so I would not have to do that. You can't buy stuff anymore mass produced as the just don't have quality control. They buy cheap junk and just slap them together. I was a BB Chevy guy and bought my heads from the dealer bear and the seats were not round. Really is sad you buy stuff with your hard earned money and have to spend more money to make em right.

      That;s kind of the point of the video. These new GL4 oils just started to surface within the past 2 years. But..... because of this renewed focus, I do think there are better formulations that make the transmissions shift better and run cooler. We are pushing these transmissions against larger loads and much more extreme conditions than we did in the 1960's.
