Paul, I had my M21 rebuilt using your midplate and rebuild kit. The guy who did the work was so impressed with the quality of the parts, the completeness of the rebuild kit and the features offered by the midplate that he wants to start buying them for his customers and his drag racing builds. Thanks for making happy customers out of both of us!
I called you and you told me I needed to adjust the clutch linkage on my 60 Vette. I thought you were wrong but I thought it would be worth a try. While adjusting the linkage it broke. Great. So naturally I blamed you. A coupla hours later it’s all together and with 1/4 inch extra adjustment it works better than ever. Nice considering I've had this beast since 1972. About time it shifts right. Thanks for your help, your expertise, and your time. A generous check is in the mail. Okay I was lying about that last thing. Max.
If UA-cam handed out awards for best videos--------you would win it. I'm also blow away with all the knowledge. Wall to wall content with no dead fluff.
Listen to this man, he knows his stuff. If you are looking to rebuild it yourself buy his book and get your parts through his online store, they are excellent quality. Thanks again Paul for your advice and knowledge. It was invaluable during my build.
It’s refreshing to see somebody that takes this much pride in their work and strives to do the job right the first time and actually knows what they are doing. This industry as a whole is full of hacks that are just here to take your money. Keep up the good work.
I haven’t owned or worked on a Muncie in years..... but it all came back while watching the video. I liked all the fixes for leaks too; it sure is smooth and quiet ! 👍
Paul, really like the depth of the specifics that you articulate into on your rebuilds. This information allows the the home builder to rebuild his transmission to an otherwise higher level specification. Again good science, and much enjoyment to the viewer/enthusiast.
I am not a trans tech, however I am a helicopter tech, and you are a pleasure to watch. Good standards and shop practices are almost a thing of the past these days.
WOW, Just wow. So nice, for a change, to watch someone who really knows what he's doing and has an appreciation for details and doing things the correct way, with a reason behind it.
Your videos always provide enormous value and you given me a whole new appreciation for any drive train rebuild. I'm very happy that I subscribed to your channel. Excellent Paul!
This is one of the most comprehensive videos I've ever seen. Clarified a lot of issues. A professional rebuild my transmission and buggered up the shifter install which caused it to be stuck in first or reverse, I ended up launching my Camaro in reverse into a bench that did significant body damage. I sent him a photo of the misaligned shifter, untightened linkage bolts, missing mount bolt, and he's pretty much gonna end up paying for this.
Great video! I had a Muncie M22 "Rock Crusher" in my '71 Z-28 Camaro back in the day. Oh, that sweet "whine" of those spinning gears. Just a bit of trivia. Actually, the term "whine" is a misnomer. It is more of a "ring" or "ping" of the 20 degree helical cut nickel alloy gears clashing against each other at thousands of times a second. This creates a continuous harmonic that sounds like a steady whine. This is also how that "Whine" from timing gear-drive sets is generated. The problem with loud gear-drive though, in modern cars anyway, is that the knock sensor interprets that whine as a ping or knock and the computer retards the ignition timing to save the engine. The M22 gears are stronger, but louder, than the other similar Muncie 4-speed transmissions, and great if you have a lot of horsepower and torque spinning that transmission. 👍
Wow,brings back memories...I rebuilt lots of Muncies back in the day.Seeing your upgrades is a sigh of relief(I particularly like the countershaft upgrades). I haven't touched a 4spd. trans in many years and I've got two of them to rebuild,I thought I would refresh by watching a video.Yours was the first one I came across. I'm glad I did, excellent informative video. Thanks so much.
started my m22w build today been doing some refresher watching your videos some more today so i do not miss anything the gear set I got from D&L transmissions were perfect ,well i guess my break is over back to the shop ,counter gear cluster pin time cant wait to put this in my truck thanks for all the information and keep up all the good work .
I traded a guy installation of a TH350 for a M20 in his Model T hot rod a couple decades ago. The plan was to upgrade my 79 ElCamino Saginaw with it. Put his car up on the hoist, did the entire swap. Didn’t even notice until months later, when I pulled out from under the bench. It was a M22. Score!

Paul, I just watched your Muncie 4 Speed Rebuilding Upgrades. As mentioned in an e-mail I sent to you, I own a Saginaw 4 Speed :) nonetheless I learned a ton from this video! And for everyone out there ... Paul is the real deal! He says in this video he gets back to inquiries quite soon. I too love watching your videos and listening to your expertise. After seeing all the details/ upgrades, the last scene where you pan over the assembled transmission, just truly beautiful. Great stuff. Thanks for taking us along for the build.
Paul, I've had at least 15 Muncie's since 1973 until 1985 and my favorite is the Close Ratio Muncio M-21. I only wish they made one in a 5 speed. If they do, let me know. You have done, by far the best video's on Muncie's. If I ever need one or want to buy one, you'll be the first person I call. Good day ,,, Joseph
@@GearBoxVideo I would have offered up mine but I just had it rebuilt. Seems as though a PO ran it w/o oil. Needless to say- new gear set was in order.
@@GearBoxVideoYour videos are extremely helpful as I need to go through my tired M-21. I have an A-833 from my long gone '68 Charger R/T. Hello Paul, thanks for bringing back memories of my 4 speed Muncie. It came off a 67 chevelle and I had rebuilt back in the early 80s. I installed in a 55 chevy truck with a 283 engine and a 1972 posi traction chevy rear end. I believe it was a 3.21 gear ratio. If I had a car or truck project I would still put a 4 speed Muncie. I love this video. Plenty of awesome information. And it really sounds like a young Harvey Keitel telling me how to rebuild my transmission properly LOL
Am sure you're tired of hearing this but for (old) Muncie newbies, videos like this are a godsend. Watch it over and over to pick up every detail. Question as I make a major move from SBC to BBC. I have a '68 M20 that runs like a dream behind my 327. While I'd love to just drop it behind my new 496, I know upgrades are necessary - so my question is, what really needs to be done to the trans? Bought the Supercase w/extension and steel midplate years ago (with sealed bearing, 1" shaft, etc) - its just been sitting on the shelf. So aside from the case upgrade, do I need to replace ALL internals with the good Italian stuff to hold up to that big block torque or am I just fooling myself thinking this will work at all? Alternative is to go with the new Tremec TKX but I don't have $2700 just lying around. Appreciate your thoughts.
Paul, first thank you for sharing you experience and knowledge, it's priceless. This may be a stupid question, but I was told the only stupid question was an unasked question. I have a couple of 1969 m21s, one is good, one needs work. Is it possible to install the m22 gears set into a m21? Essentially making a m22 out of a m21 or would it be impossible or worth while? Thank you.
Really enjoy your videos. Would appreciate your recommended specs and clearances for a street M20 I'm rebuilding. Thanks for all the great information.
Hi, first you need to watch some of my other videos so you understand how these transmissions go together. Second, the shaft is not sticking out. Third, it is press fit with sealant in the bore. That is how these work. In fact how a majority of American 3 and 4 speed transmissions are assembled this way.
Absolutly awsome video. I like that you make it like new rather than just making it work. What would you charge for this rebuild and where are you located?
You Sir are an artist. You have an intriquit knowledge of vintage performance manual transmissions unparalleled by few.

Love your work man
im really enjoying your skills and passing them on in videos, im learning
Thanks for watching.
Paul is to manual transmissions what Neil Peart is to drumming.
Behold, The Master!
But I play drums... ( under Paul Blaccard) Latest is "Stick" by Sonny Vincent on UA-cam.
Thank you.
Yes, absolutely you can. Many people do.
Really enjoy your videos. Would appreciate your recommended specs and clearances for a street M20 I'm rebuilding. Thanks for all the great information.
My book has fine details and picture by picture builds. You can get a Kindle version pretty cheap.
I just want to thank you for your knowledge of transmission rebuilding enjoying your videos 📹 😊 👍🤜🤛
Appreciate that.
Hi, at 32:46 don’t you worry about oil leaks from between sticking out counter shaft and bore? Why?
Hi, first you need to watch some of my other videos so you understand how these transmissions go together. Second, the shaft is not sticking out. Third, it is press fit with sealant in the bore. That is how these work. In fact how a majority of American 3 and 4 speed transmissions are assembled this way.
Fuck yeah, your back.
Absolutly awsome video. I like that you make it like new rather than just making it work. What would you charge for this rebuild and where are you located?
Currently I'm not doing rebuilds
All I am going to say is...YOU ARE GOOD !!!
Another Excellent video, still waiting to see some Toploader stuff on this channel though!
Send me a transmission!
