Can You Beat Lords of the Fallen (2014) with Only Magic?

- In preparation for the new title, I thought I'd finally get around to playing all the way through Lords of the Fallen, so what better way than with a challenge run?
While I would thoroughly recommend avoiding the game as a whole, I am still genuinely hopeful for the sequel. And I am glad to have finally gotten through it, even if only to say that I did.
Also, uhh... magic better next time please?

Thank you for saving me the time of never picking this game up. Your kindness truly knows no bounds.
Not gunna lie its a total piece of shit its clunckierer darksould. Weirdly fun though
@@keiganbenny3008yeah, Played it and...oddly okay? Not a double playthrough game but once good enough
he's exaggerating the issues and ignoring all the positive aspects of the game. it's nowhere near as bad as people like him are making it out to be.
To unlock hidden walls in this game, you have to RUN at the wall and block the LAST SECOND to crash through the wall...
So, no spoilers, but I adore your pfp and that game
You've done some... dumb challenges but reading the title alone was enough for me to say "you poor bastard" thank you for your struggles
I'm excited for the new one; for sure. its an obvious improvement over. . . well, everything present in the original.
Never thought I'd see a challenge run of the OG though, and it went about how I expected lol
As long as the performance is stable, I'm really excited to give it a swing! Not sure if I'll ever be coming back to this one though.
@@SpuddyCube So far; the footage has been lookin clean. It's actually got a proper magic system in play, and seems to be putting in the effort for build diversity.
As for never going back to the OG LoTF. . . probably for the best lol
Dude, the father figure thing is so true but always sad to hear. Hope you're doing ok.
Me just chilling doing my thing watching this run all of a sudden your boy just casually drops some wisdom “ blood relations don’t have to mean anything it’s far more important that you find people around you that you love and who love you, you are under no obligation to have any relationship with anyone and I’d advise you against spending time with people who claim they are family find people who act like family “ Said so well!
While this game was flawed and unfinished due to studio time crunches, I genuinely think it was a hidden gem and I'm really happy you played it, I'm also quite excited for the remake coming out
7:20 Thank you. This is actually incredibly relieving to hear. You're a good, kind soul; reminds me of my best friend.
I don't think this game hates mage builds. It hates all builds equally.
I dunno, that cast speed is kinda brutal. I don't remember the melee weapons being good, but there's no way they're _that_ bad.
I received this game for free and never played it as I have a friend who very, very thoroughly explained how awful it is to me. Basically the nail in the coffin of me not touching it despite thinking about it when he explained was "you know how in Souls games some bosses have incredible tracking on attacks that if you don't dodge at the perfect moment you get hit? That's every attack but glitchier."
I will admit I enjoy the visual direction of the game. I'm a sucker for even the most generic dark fantasy visuals in a lot of cases, but that's about where my interest ends. I hope better for the sequel, as I hate to see developers do nothing but churn out crap all the time, but I do feel there will be a healthy bit of skepticism about whether or not I even look into the sequel currently.
All that being said, I do respect the dedication to the challenge run. Challenge runs in general can be grueling to get through, especially for challenges that the game just hates, in this case magic. They get much worse when you play them on a very broken game. Congratulations on getting through this slog of a run. Hopefully your next challenge lies in a better, or at least more functional game.
Your loss. It's a good game.
I love this game so much. I love how cinematic it is and how it puts effort into trying to tell a story. Is it the best? No, but it is cool. And I am excited for the next game.
It feels like a sort of time capsule for a period of experimentation and imitation. It feels like it was trying to replicate Souls, but also like they wanted to try a lot of new things. I feel like they failed pretty badly, but it does leave me really wanting to see where they take the sequel. With more experience, and things being a bit more standardized, I absolutely want to know how far the concepts have come. Hopefully with a larger budget, I'm excited to see what's in store.
@@SpuddyCube I do disagree that they failed hard but agree that a sequel good be really good. My main issue with many Soulslike games is that they feel directionless. Which is the point but I don't particularly like that. Especially considering many of them could have a clearer direction that is supported by the narrative.
Also thanks for the videos. I really enjoy your stuff and I hope to see more. Of this and other pseudo reviews like with the Borderlands 3 video.
@@SpuddyCube Worth pointing out that the sequel is made by a completely different studio. The people who made this (Deck13) went on to make The Surge 1 and 2 but have nothing to do with the new Lords of the Fallen game.
Would love to see you take on a Darksiders 2 magic only challenge (though I'm pretty sure you don't start off with offensive spells so that challenge might only truly start after a bit of grinding in the first world) since just like LotF it's a game where magic is clearly intended to be a support tool primarily rather than a viable main damage option, but I also seem to remember the Ghoul summon being able to dish out some mean damage.
Not entirely sure how doable it really is, there's at least a number of gimmick fights where you are forced to use at least the pistol, but I would love to see someone with greater pain tolerance than me try it out.
Huh... For as much as I talk about the series, I hadn't really thought about it. It's been a while since I played the other two main games, but I don't think they're doable. I am now really curious about the second game though. I think it could be fun, and there are a couple of neat glitches to play with.
I dont usually suffer from motion sickness...but when I do...this video genuinely gave me a light headache. Worth it though to be clear.
Just be careful not to hurt yourself!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I love and hate this clunky fucking game!
good video but it would be better on mute
this game was one of the worst games i have ever played...i still dont understand why i beat it.
If nothing else, you can say you did! I have played significantly worse games, but... Not really ones I'd want to bother revisiting. Not that I'm sure why I wanted to revisit this one either...
Yo I had this game as free on my Xbox for years, I didn't knew it had graphics this good.
Also, I'm saddened that the sequel got rid of the close camera and options when talking and rather went with the obtuse from formula.
It seems like a lot of games hate pure spellcasters, especially soul like games, as there's either an issue of painfully slow mana regeneration or none at all. Then depending on the game, the damage maybe ass compared to Melee and Archery and with Melee and Archery you usually easy no downsides damage increases then with magic you may get 100% more damage but at the cost of like 175% more mana cost. I truly don't understand the unspoken hate for spellcasters.
I think a lot of it comes from the idea of complexity in play vs in build. Melee means getting close and mitigating damage. Ranged play tends to be about keeping distance and being relatively safe, so the general setup is a lot harder. Then you get games more like this where spacing isn't always viable, so you're sacrificing damage/having a real healthbar for... the glory of using magic, I guess.
This game is kinda fun at some points but it is also very clunky at most times. I had fun with the game when i played it but it certainly didnt come even close to the experience i got from Bloodborne or the dark souls trilogy.
Its a jard one to get down for sure but its still an enjoyable game and moving back to a souls game after getting gud with this one makes everything feel weightless and smooth
Spuddy... It's ok to ask for mental help, you don't need to play Lords of The Fallen as some bid for attention mid mental crisis. Would you like to sit down and talk about what pushed you to this point?
The worst part is that I'm really not sure what drove me to want to play it in the first place. I'm pretty confident there are at least two other runs I could do for it, but I really don't want to run either.
Everytime i watch a video i get hit with a life lesson
In case of this title "Can you beat Lords of the FalleN" is a challenge on it's own :P
That is accurate...
So many games I need to play truly thank you
man your game is so much buggier than mine??? like the game is a total clunkfest, but at the very least my sprinting always worked.
I've been told that I have a way of breaking games by just interacting with them... I don't think I'm even doing things all that far outside of the norm.
The dumbest thing about this game, the thing that RUINED my interest in it, is the newgame+ is CAPPED at 2 runs.
I LOVE newgame+ I demand it in my RPGs, and I bought this game knowing it had it, but then, after your third run, it's over. The game isn't great, but it would be FINE, if not for this idiotic design choice. I just can't imagine any reasoning or logic in something so stupid.
That is... so strange. I wasn't aware of that, and it feels like a really weird design choice. Which I suppose is almost fitting for this title.
I love you but why man
The thing about that is...
Thank you for bringing smile to us, I hope you everything good upon you.
another banger of a video.
This game....ew still gona watch and give you a like
Haha wow interesting idea man lets see!
Wait, wait, wait... You've played this game before, know how... uhmm "not good" it is and still decided to play it again? 🙄
After that you have to make The Surge video. Same dev. Much better game!
Yeah... I wanted to finally get around to finishing it for... reasons, maybe... If it makes it any better, I have both Surge titles on Steam. I just need to get around to booting them up.
@@SpuddyCube so you haven't played them yet? Honestly I didn't expect much from The Surge seeing LotF, but I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't like the level design, but everything else is a giant improvement. It kept good ideas from this game while bringing in new good ideas and fixing most problematic parts. Haven't got to play the second one yet too though
bit late but, would you ever do a Q&A or face reveal? I'd love to know more about spuddius cubicle specifically what's your sexuality / gender identity? (sorry if that's a strange question I'm a strange person)
I'm not sure about showing my face. It doesn't really tend to be relevant to what I do. Maybe someday, but I dunno.
In terms of Q&A, I tend to think I'm fairly open with a lot of things, sans more directly identifying information. To the last question, I'm not one hundred percent sure. I don't have a ton of dating experience, but I think all sorts of people can be attractive.
In terms of gender identity... I'm me. I don't recall a time that I strongly identified with male. Historically, I've used he/they comfortably. Never really had a chance to feel out she/her, but I wouldn't rule it out. Probably something within the gender neutral/agenderish area, but nothing concrete. Life is a journey of discoveries, and while I don't know where I am or where I'm heading, I'm kind of okay with that. I'll probably figure it out someday. Until then, if nothing else, I'm me.
@@SpuddyCube Wow, I'm excited you replied so in depth! You're a very insightful and eloquent individual, and I enjoyed reading your thoughts on my questions.
I've been watching your channel for a while now, (maybe 9-8 months?) It's comforting watching your videos and I love your humor.
Keep up the beautiful work, Love from Canada.
More of these games need to let you pause
_Absolutely._ I love the genre, but I hate that feature and how it works its way into so many of them.
Bro is just playing and then boom wisdom
Great Video :)
im so sorry you had to play this
The worst part is that I didn't really _have_ to play it. This was fully of my own volition, and I don't even have a good excuse.
4:18 I mean, I'd still say you're the fool, but I'll give it to ya to make up for the pain of this run. No need for thanks 😂
I hope new lords of fallen be better
This game is so bad butt i loved
Its so bad its good. I love it.
To comment on your point about bosses at the end, Without Parrying, Gwyn is actually a pretty decent final boss. He's strong, has an obvious elemental bonus on his weapon that you can change armor to negate or just push through with your current armor, has a decent variety of attacks with tight but fair windows. He also reacts to you trying to chug an Estus without getting cover first and he is full tilt from the start, just like Dark Souls itself. But for Veterans or people who know the series well, he's underwhelming and pretty generally easy once you've got the mechanics down, just like the whole of DS1 imo, plus it pulls double duty. He's the only enemy of his calibur that you can parry, showing that despite all his ego and bluffing and running from the dark, he's still killable and still mortal just like everyone else. Same goes for Elden Ring, bullshit second phase, deals way too much damage, random overwhelming resistance to Holy for no god damn reason and somehow far too little and far too much HP. Probably wouldn't be so bad if you could use your horse in the final arena but hey, the horse combat also kinda sucks if you aren't using ranged weapons/spells.
New Lords of the Fallen is a reboot if I understand correctly and it's made by a different dev. It also doesn't look like it's got any story/characters from the original LotF, so have no idea whey they even called it with the name of this mess
Devs confirmed it's a soft reboot, set 1000 years after the first game. So there actually will be mentions of the old game in the new one (although rather limited)
Fun Fact: Beast is where I gave up when I played this game a long time ago. Not because I couldn't beat it. No, it was just that shortly after Beast, I honestly couldn't force myself to keep playing this dumpster fire of a game. I was just plain bored.
I think I was pretty lucky to barely understand english when I played that game as I just didn't know the story at all and just run from battle to battle for fun with ease. To me it was just the gameplay that even if it was simple and repetetive, I found it enjoyable and the full game isn't too long to overstay it's welcome. But yea, I do see now with my full comprehension of english that I'd be a pain to play just because I understand it.
It's rare that I consider the ability to understand multiple languages as a bad thing. In this case...
Why would you ever play this garbage 💀
You see, that's a great question...
Don't let the devs see this
Hated this game after first 4 hours as a warrior, but then something clicked and I finally understood the fight and even started to enjoy it. But it still extremely janky.
As someone who's had to cut myself off from my blood relations, your words on family really hit home.
You're the most wholesome challenge runner on UA-cam, and while there's not a Lot of competition for that title, you certainly knock it out of the park on that skill, consistently.
I wish you well, and thank you for your work.
Hmm, I think you might not like this game.
Maybe just a tad.
SSSSPPPPUUUUUDDDDDDDDYYYYY!!!!!!!!! Hi 👋
Hello!
Spuddy is back with a banger. Missed you love you
Are you planning on making a baldurs gate 3 challenge? Seems like a good game to try something absurd
I've kinda gone back and forth on giving it a shot. From what I've heard, it's a really long title. I do have the benefit of familiarity with the system, but it's also outside of what I'd typically play in terms of gameplay.
Cube dad lore?
You get a like just for attempting to play this horrible mess they called a "game"
Am so ready for the new lords of the fallen.
I'm so glad Deck13 isn't working on the new Lords of the Fallen, those guys just make mediocre game after mediocre game.
FACTS!
I like RedBelly from TPS, but I can't remember even one other duo boss fight that'd be at least ok
To think I beat this game three times over -_-
buddy play dmc3 it will be glories to see
Iirc in this game there are two types of checkpoint crystals and two ways to interact with them only one of which restores your healing, health, etc
+
I wanted to watch this but the unnecessary whining made me quit.
The game is terrible you saved yourself
try starfield, nearly all of your criticism applies to that too
I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I've at least heard that it's a generally more full experience. With a really weird choice made for the new game+ cycles...
magic too op pls nerf
The magic regen rate is clearly far too high. Much like the running speed.
@@SpuddyCube I mean your wearing a metric ton of armor, tbf if that was realistic youd move kinda slow if youd have a building's wourth if heavy armor on.
The worst part is that he's just as slow while wearing no armor at all. I tested it early on, but it broke the gauntlet. It was equipped, but wouldn't show up on the model or attack at all. Putting the armor back didn't fix it either. I had to equip a equip a weapon to get it back, so... I have no idea what happened there.
You used movement too...
how did this game manage to get a sequel?
I'm not sure, but I find it inspiring in a sense. Even for all of its shortcomings, there are folks passionate enough about it to push on ahead.
@@SpuddyCubeNoone was passionate about the game. It's a reboot reusing the name. Different devs and no relation to the original at all
You can pause soles games at bonfires or just die its not exactly like you loose anything
you lose all your souls, you die again, they are gone for good. not to mention you have to run the ENTIRE level again which if you lack bonfires or shortcuts is brutal.
Especially when it's a bunch of minor interruptions, dying in game costs the most valuable asset I have. Time.
had plenty of fun playing this game, actually. I seem to remember at least some of the issues pointed out in this video, but I don't recall them ruining the playthrough for me. you suffer from some kind of misplaced resentment, same as with the crowd of Dark Souls 2 haters.
I actually like the game. Not sure why you pick the worst possible playstyle and then comprehensively declare that the game sucks. It's like someone playing Dark Souls for the first time only using their fists. Of course they are going to hate the game.
Played through 6 times fully on ps4 and never had any of these problems you had. Never had a problem holding a button to sprint. Might be user malfunction lol.
Says A-Demon is the best boss, shits on Gwyn, Calls a guy who isn’t sexist sexist, and uses pronouns for an in game demon/monster. I know all I need to know💀
The Asylum Demon serves its purpose phenomenally.
Gwyn is underwhelming/easy.
The concept of what a "real man" does or doesn't do is inherently sexist.
You do know that "it" and "I" are pronouns, yeah?
About the boss summoning minons complaint, whenever my friend streamed and encountered one we'd all say "Get a mechanic."
It is the most basic and boring thing that is often used when the devs seemed to realize that a boss was actually too easy or boring.
I prefer this game to the remake. At least this game kinda did it's own thing, rather than just badly copy dark souls.
Also, this game actually runs properly 😁
can i get a pin papa Spuddy?
"fromsoft please im an adult, i have other things to do"
Have you.... Idk.... Heard of save and quit?
You can, but it doesn't work well for things like boss fights, and it introduces long load times for what are otherwise brief but incredibly disruptive moments that come with being alive.
Nobody is quite the same, and not having the ability to pause makes the game a lot less accessible for those with different needs and wants. I love the series, but it's consistently my least favorite part of the genre.
i want to hear more lore about this Father of the Fallen
