    Wow, thank you so much for making one of the most informative videos I've ever watched- period! I'm an M1 Mac video editor making the leap to my first NAS and after watching your video, I'm going to make the same move to a QNAP 472 =)

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  Рік тому

      Really appreciate that Matt! I think most of the videographers I see that have the M1 Macs have went with the 472 primarily because of the thunderbolts too. Hope you enjoy it!

      @@briankfung Hey Brian-it seems there are two different processor options-- Intel Core i5 or Pentium. Curious which one you bought and why =)

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  Рік тому

      this is the exact order I placed: amzn.to/3AnvOXf. I went with the i3, but to be honest, I didn't really look into the processor speed as much likely due to the bias of the reviews I was looking into. They didn't go into the processor at all. My apologies, but I don't have any informed insight into that. It didn't seem to be as compelling as a factor vs. the other parts.

    Thanks for sharing your decision making process. You have been very thoughtful. I just had a very bad experience with Sinology DS1522+. After initial setup, I could not log in even once. Numerous phone calls and emails back and forth with Synology tech support for several days. The problem persisted and they stopped responding to my emails. I had to return the defective unit. I am not sure if I still have the courage to try my luck on another NAS. If I can muster enough guts, I will probably buy a QNAP 474. You chose 472ext for the thunderbolt port. I would prefer the faster CPU on the 474.

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  Рік тому

      sorry to hear that. It sounds quite frustrating. QNAP appears to be "more difficult" to setup vs. synology so hopefully you don't run into any issues if that's the route you go. It's been simple enough so far. And yeah, if I didn't need the thunderbolt port, I'd 100% have went with the 474!

      @@briankfung Thanks for your reply. I can see why you choose thunderbolt port over CPU speed. As a matter of fact, my nephew just suggested to me that I should consider a thunderbolt 3 DAS, such as OWC Thunderbay4, instead of a NAS, because I am a solo videographer and almost exclusively editing at home.

    Hi Brian, hope you are enjoying your TVS-472XT. I have two more questions for you. First, can the two Thunderbolt 3 ports be connected to two computers, or are they like those on a OWC Thunderbolt DAS, only one can be connected to a computer and the other is for daisy chain? Secondly, how noisy is your NAS? Since you can’t be more than two meters away from it, do you feel the noise distracting or annoying while you are editing? Thank you very much for your answer.

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  Рік тому

      Hm, I haven't actually attempted to connect the thunderbolt 3 ports to two computers, but since there are multiple, I'm assuming you can probably connect to more than 1. I have 2 ports on mine. I'm not sure about daisy chaining. Strangely enough, the speeds I'm running off just wifi connection has been sufficient for me and I'm not hard wiring it that often to be a DAS. As for noise, I'm a bit surprised....it's not noisy at all. However, the vast majority of the time it's sitting upstairs in a loft so it's insignificant. When I'm next to it, it's just mainly the fan, but I don't think it's a great test since I haven't been pushing it very hard. Once I start doing more heavy editing work I'll share my experience to see if it makes a difference.

    I have absolutely the same scenario: "Video Editing on MacBook Pro M1", thanks for the video. I have bunch of SSD's it's time to find more convenient way to keep footage safe. The main complain I heard with NAS colleagues say "you must have UPC otherwise you can loose your data!"
    Did you find a solution for that?

    • @MotorcyclistDiaries

      Btw checked the price of the qnap the same model in Korea South. Here in Korea only NAS without hard drives cost more than NAS with hard drives on US Amazon. That’s insane)).
      I’d like to buy from Amazon but the power socket in us is 110V here in Korea we have 220V. Do you think it is possible to buy this NAS with 110V power supply, and swap this power unit to 220V from pc? Does NAS has the same motherboard socket as PC?

    Great video, I have two questions. Can we transfer data from mac or pc via usb/thunderbolt directly with network attached ? Just like DAS. Second - Do you recommend this? Howz your user experience so far?

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  3 місяці тому

      Yep, can transfer and use data directly via DAS. It's what I do for editing. I can't say I have strong recs or dislikes against it since it's my first NAS. It has been serving its purpose thus far, so I'm happy with it. The UI/software could be a bit more intuitive, but I knew that coming in. I'd probably search around for comparisons though since I've only used QNAP.

    • @PreethamRameshNaik

      @@briankfung there are no NAS devices which can be used as DAS. Only QNAP can be used as DAS as they have thunderbolt connectivity. Do you know any other by chance ? Also, is yours i3 version?

    I use Qnap's Nasbook and love it. In the past couple years there's been a couple ransomware attacks. I highly suggest disabling the default admin user and creating a new unique username with all admin privileges. There's several youtubers whose Qnap NAS's have been hit with the ransomware.
    Also, setting a daily reboot schedule in the power settings is good practice. Prevents slowdowns and failed firmware updates.

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  Рік тому

      Appreciate the info here George. I recall a few posts about the ransomeware attacks, but didn't pay much attention to it. However, I think that'd be ill-informed of me if I didn't so I'll definitely be doing what you suggested here to help mitigate that along with the daily reboot. Out of curiosity, do you also use a UPC? I feel like that's a no brainer, but curious.

    • @kylehazachode
      @kylehazachode Рік тому

      @@briankfung I don't use a UPC. I have the NAS set to restart after a power failure. I use it as my Plex server and iTunes backup. It's not imperative to keep it on 247. I normally do some reading or journaling when a power failure hits. I did take the extra measure by installing a properly isolated ground outlet and use hospital grade surge protector for my rack.

    Great info! I have a Lacie 6BIG 48TB. It is Thunderbolt 3 and i also bought 3m Thunderbolt 4 cables for future proving. The price of these cables are insane but i guess that's what you have to pay if you want higher speed and reliable cables. Thing is, i'm not sure if there are even other brands who have these type of cables. Which is why they are so expensive i guess? If there is no competition they can ask whatever they want.

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  Рік тому +1

      I saw some review about the thunderbolt 4 cables and it sounded like the price was justified. Granted, I imagine there was some level of being a monopoly because I vaguely recall it being the only one that runs at those speeds. So, exactly what you're saying where there is essentially no competition. I think these are worthwhile investments though if it's a big part of your workflow. I spend a lot of time doing both uploads & downloads so I really want to maximize it.

    Good video Brian. How much m.2 ssd memery (for cache) can you install on the base 4gb CPU?

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  Рік тому +1

      That's a great question. I ended up going with 2 x 2 TB for a total of 4 TB of m.2. ssd memory. But because it can differ so much based on various factors, I'd strongly suggest checking the compatibility here: www.qnap.com/en/compatibility/?model=355&category=11 to check on that.
