The very small amounts of MSM turf needed per gallon make it very easy to over apply and cause damage to turf, ornamentals and trees if you dont carefully measure it. Aside from that, it is a great and very inexpensive product that is effective on a lot of weeds if used as directed.

Jason, Two things to mention about this video as I learn more about the chemicals. Might be worthwhile to mention that higher rates of MSM can damage trees from what I've been told. Which leads to the second part....have you figured out a good method for measuring MSM into 1 gallon or 2 gallon sprayers? I thinking the only accurate way will be a scale that measure down to grams. I use a gas powered backpack sprayer and a 3 nozzle walking boom to treat yards. As you mentioned, its difficult to measure out such small quantities.

MSM Turf is considered safe at lower rates for trees. But it's good to know to use with caution around trees and to follow label instructions. Biggest danger to small oak trees. I personally would avoid spraying inside the drip line of hardwood trees and palm trees if you use it regularly on your lawn

@@AJ-ds9xq The only common weed that I've read that it's more effective on say certainty or other products is spurge, aside from bahiagrass and tress and what not.. It is recommended you broadcast spray spurge with it due to spurge being born pregnant and it's pre-emergent properties. I've heard that Fahrenheit might be a better option of the average user due to a lower concentrate and harder to mess up your application rate. We're talking like .3 grams - .25 oz per 1k sq feet per 1 gallon of water for spot spraying.

And does the Resolute act as a spot treatment or does it need a complete covering of the yard to kill weed seeds? Is there a hose end sprayer that would work for Resolute? I have a backpack sprayer but even with its four gallon capacity, it would wear you out to spray the whole yard. Some kind of hose end device would be necessary unless one just puts it on in granular form.

    • @MikeThePike316
      @MikeThePike316 4 роки тому +2

@@chinov9445 - Hey, thanks for the question. Just a couple of caveats to my application rate. For St. Augustine, 1 oz per acre calculates to 0.651 grams per 1,000 sq. ft. However, I rounded up to 1 gram per 1,000 sq. ft., which has worked for me without any turf injury. Second, I'm not a professional, but this stuff comes down to good math and studying the label. That said, I just checked the label and it recommended the following application rate for Kentucky Bluegrass and Fine Fescue: "Apply 0.25 to 0.5 oz of MSM Turf Herbicide per acre for control of the listed weeds. Do not exceed a total of 0.5 oz per acre within a 9-month period." I recommend buying a gram weight scale and apply at a rate of anywhere between 0.20 grams and 0.33 grams per 1 gallon of water for 1,000 sq. ft. with a good surfactant. Try a small test patch and increase the application rate up to 1 gram if necessary, but it's imperative to start at a low rate. This approach monitors turf injury. Nonetheless, you should probably spend a bit of time to identify certain weeds in your yard. Google Lens is an amazing resource. Then check the label for the application rate for that particular weed and adjust your application rate accordingly. For example, if you're treating Lespedeza, the recommended application rate is between 0.33 and 0.5 oz per acre, which translates to 0.23 grams and 0.31 grand per 1,000 sq. ft. Therefore, you wouldn't need as much product as you would with a more troublesome weed like Virginia Buttonweed which requires 1 oz per acre. Formula = Label Application Rate (e.g., 1 oz) / 43,560 x n / 1,000. Cross multiply. 43,560n x 1,000. Solve for n. 1000/43,560. N = 0.0229.... convert to grams = 0.651 grams. Hope this makes sense. Key takeaway is apply at a rate of anywhere between 0.20 grams and 0.33 grams per 1 gallon of water for 1,000 sq. ft. with a good surfactant. Increase rate if needed.

Thanks to your help and the other guys at the conference, we're almost ready to start spraying. The only thing I'm having a hard time finding is a video or training course on how to actually spray. Would it be possible for you to make a video showing the actual technique and patterns you use while spraying a lawn and how you would spray around obstacles, driveways, shrubs? What not to spray, when it's too wet or windy, etc? I would be happy to pay you for a video of you spraying a few different lawns. I've found plenty of training on every other aspect, but almost nothing on the actual application.

Does the MSM turf not have separate directions for spot treatments if using a backpack sprayer? When we are doing spot applications of our 3-way pesticides (2-4-d/generic killex) they have separate broadcast and spot app rates.
The mixing per acre is also based on the spray pressure and pattern, you can spray an acre with a low volume of water or a higher amount depending on the strength of the mix. Backpack units will come up on the lower volume of water per acre with most spray heads and their low pressures compared to using a truck mount spray tank and wand. Shouldn’t be hard to measure out the MSM even at a rate of .25oz per acre since a backpack can easily cover an acre with 6 gallons, so 2 loads of 3 gallons with .125oz of chem and the graduated cylinder goes down to .1oz. Even if the mix comes out a little stronger can just alter the spray pattern/rate/movement speed to compensate.
Best thing to do is do test sprays with whatever system you intend to use with water. Measure the output gal/litre per minute or second, and do the same at the intended application walking speed to get coverage per minute/second. Once I get the flow rate of a spray rig the next thing I do is time how long it takes to cover a per determined square feet at the speed I intend to work/walk. From there you can calculate the application rate per square foot and how much chemical you need per gallon/litre to meet the application rate. Without metering the spray rate everything else is meaningless, you can follow mixing directions on a label to the letter that are based on a given coverage rate, but then shoot the spray at a totally different rate from your equipment and if the pesticide solution wasn’t appropriately adjusted the application rate will be wrong.

Why are most herbicides limited to two applications per year? Is it because of environmental concerns or because it will harm the lawn or both? What happens to the lawn if either products in video is applied 3 times a year (basically 1.5X the annual max rate)? I know I could always choose a different herbicide after two applications but just wondering why it seems that the limit is usually 2 times for every product.

Jason, um, it's RAINING again you know we need the Rain because we are so scorched here in Alabama. Will these be sprays be washed away, if you spray and it rains the next day? You know because its RAINING🤪

Looks like it's going to be a crazy rainy week here. Many post-emergents only need an hour or so before rain. The pre-emergent need to be watered in

Raining here in Columbia, SC as well. My Pre-M went down 02 February and the next isn’t due until 07 March unless it warms up good beforehand.
Had a few days of 70+ so did a Tri Herbicide and that went well on some of the winter weeds but the jury is still out on the summer annuals.
MSM 60 is in the shed for the Bahia that’s trying to take over the world so I have that to look forward to after the Centipede greens up good.

The info on msm turf is not complete, I have used this product for many years as a commercial applicator and would never recommend it to a homeowner who is not savvy with how much to put out, this product can have a lot of soil residual and activity depending on soil pH and has to be sprayed properly, it’s not like roundup or most other herbicides where if you stop under a tree and don’t shut off the spray right after it’s not that big a deal, msm is hard on trees especially oak and can damage a large tree if concentrated in the root zone. Fahrenheit herbicide is better for home owners but still be carful, especially in high pH or sandy soil. Don’t kill your trees over a couple of dollars. Produamine is a great product.

Good point. MSM turf can cause damage to oak trees. I try to stay away from oak trees with it and I also recommend using it at a very low rate like a quarter ounce per acre

Lawn Care Life yep I learned the hard way. New to spraying my own lawn and had that same measuring cup and was going to .1 per 1000 each time. Killed it and the bushes. My trees looked sick too. Thank god i was renting
