I can see why you say that your photo is #1 on your list as the best one ever. I could not come up with a word or words that would describe how awesome that photo is Tim , just awesome. For me I love water photos of all kinds likes creeks, streams, lakes but my dream would be getting a shot of a waterfall, I love waterfalls.

Back in the film days, my favorite shots in the desert (Petrified Forest National Park) were right after a thundershower. The wet, petrified tree trunks (agate) were full of color. Our monsoon is usually July into early August. It's slightly better to stay in Springerville, AZ vs. Winslow. If you're driving north, you get the light just right.

Your approach to creating all the fabulous photos you have made. (Ansel Adams) "You don't take pictures: You make them"; is like mine. When approaching a problem in getting the shot you want, you improvise, adapt original plan to fit the situation. Your last photo on this video is a perfect example of what I'm saying. I like that; you even figured out a workaround for not having the proper component for shooting lightening bolts. Great video, and keep shooting.

WOW, what a passionate approach to photography. We have quite the same background, having a regular job and photography as a hobby... and then trying to take the photography to a new level. I will never come to your level and I congratulates you to all the awards, but I certainly got inspired to improve my level.

Wow impressive shoot Tim, yeah I'm completely agreed with you regarding flexibility and adapting to the weather condition in this case but also can be applied for a daily life.
When you adapt your self instead try adapting things to your desire here is where the magic happen and this photo is the best example.
You adapted to the conditions and extract the best out of it, this is much better than a sunset as sunset will happen regularly but this capture as u said is one's in a life time.
I have a dream too and is capturing a lightning in a mountain lake reflection so thanks for sharing and remember us how important is to be flexible and open mind

I was a film photographer/developer in my teens and I have been trying to capture those days (without success), having watched your videos i realise that I have become a snapper instead of a photographer, I can't decide what I want!!! Thanks for helping me realise this and what i now want is to go back to my favourite spot, Lyle Hill in Greenock Scotland and capture a storm travelling up the river. I have so many photos of this area but that is my target set. Thanks

Stunning! Truly a gift from Angels or the Weather God. Such a great lesson in learning to step out of our photo agendas and open up to the NOW! I think I took my dream photo many years ago when I hardly knew anything about photography. I was shooting in auto from our boat off the Kona coast. As I turned around, a whale not far from our boat came plunging down and sideways and I, without thinking, shot the photo. I had no idea what I captured. It was in the days of take your film to the store and hope things turn out all right. Most whale photos I see are of them with tales up or in breach position. But this was something I'd never really seen before. To this day, I love this photo even though it probably had every setting wrong. LOL Thanks Tim... BTW what were the settings on the lightening photo.

Tim Shields do you usually edit the photo in LightRoom as a one whole piece using the sliders ? or do you use some recommended approach that you work on the photo as parts using multiple graduated filters and circular filters along with the brush on the exact areas in the photo to be edited ?

I planned a trip to Switzerland once and timed it to coincide with a super moon. I did a great deal of internet inquiry so I would know when and where to be and decided on the Rhein Falls. I kind of did the same thing as you. I got into position, I knew exactly where and what time that moon would rise over the falls and railroad bridge. I was there and it was cloudy, beginning to rain and I decided to take a photo and just tell people that is where the super moon was when I clicked. Lightning struck but I was not ready for it as you were. I was not even close to what your shot is, not even close. But, I did get a shot and told people about all the time I prepared and studied the timing and position. There won't be another chance for me on that one as you tell us about fatal error. However, I will definitely consider low ISO, high number fstop and slow shutter next time I have a chance.

Beautiful images Tim. I love the lightning shot. Isn't it a thrill when you capture your first strike of lightning? And you got the motherlode on your first attempt! Great! Mine was a single streak of lightning in a very green sky, over bland foreground. But ever since it's been one of my favorite things to do, go chasing storms and lightning shots.
I do however have an issue with the lavender fields. I know they're beautiful and very photogenic, but they're also someone's crops. I just hope everyone in that shot was allowed to be there, that you all had permission from the farmer, and were mindful of not trampling the plants. There's been a lot of controversy lately with people doing whatever they want, whatever it takes just to get the shot. Mostly IG influencers, but we as photographers are kind of to blame. We're the ones who took the initial shots; the same photos that these people are inspired to seek out for themselves. Sometimes at a detriment to the land or even themselves. I'm not saying you did, but I think when we do vlogs or take these types of photos in sensitive areas, we need to say hey, this was shot with permission (or from the public roadway), or this shot of a grizzly bear was shot with a 500 mm lens. I sometimes wonder what these warriors with crappy cell phones set out to capture, if they realize they really shouldn't get a selfie with an alligator. LOL
I recently joined the Nature First Alliance. Perhaps as a responsible photographer, you might take a look and lead by their principles and promote them as well. Here's a link to their website. www.naturefirstphotography.org/ I encourage you to share with your followers as well. Thanks!

Wow! Weren't you worried about being struck by lightning with a tripod in an open field? Lol. Funny you ask what my ideal photo would be.......I honestly don't know. It depends on what speaks to me at the time. The quieter, less people, wilder and natural, the better, whether that involves wildlife, nature or a combination or an incredible play of light. I guess it's what makes my heart skip a beat as soon as I see it and often I have to ask myself what it is in the scene that captures me.....is it primarily the light or the colours, the symmetry or whatever....and then try and capture that element first and foremost and use the rest of the scene to highlight that element(s). Does that make sense?

Hi Dave, I tried a one third shot and I found the balance & symmetry composition with the tree in the middle to be more dramatic.
Funny enough...I just did a Facebook live today about this very thing inside the Photography Academy Facebook group.
Balance and symmetry shots are better for a "hero" shot. In this case the tree was the hero.
