I have my D850 on order and am eagerly awaiting delivery. I chose it because I have f-mount glass already and virtually every review I could find rates it as an incredible camera. I needed to upgrade from my D5500 which I use primarily for bird photography. I do very little video or I would have considered one of the mirrorless models but that would require new glass. I watched several UA-cam videos with the D850 matched to a Sigma 150-600 C and they were all very positive. Since I already have this lens, and considering all the features of this camera, choosing the D850 seemed like a no brainer. I am very excited to get it in my hands to start playing. Videos like yours were what helped my make my decision. Thank you.

I CONCUR!!! I know youtube is about videos but holy katz!! I want a camera review, not a display of your premier pro and after effects abilities!! this was nicely done! concise. to the point. i was thinking about trading my 800 and 810 on a new 850 but my amex card bill came while i was watching this and saw how much i spent at b&h last month! may have to wait a little longer now!

Thanks for your knowledge about this camera.
I had desired to have it but I didn't have the money to buy it, someone has promised to buy it for me from Dubai, hopefully by the end of this month I will have it.
For a long time, I have been using Nikon brands ,the last one d5600.

Tim...thanks for the great review. I've had my D850 for almost a year now and love it. I'm not a professional but have learned so much over the past year to become a better armature and my D850 with a few good lenses has helped me produce better pictures overall. Still have a lot to learn...subscribed today.

Thanks for the video! The D850 is the third DSLR camera I have owned. As an avid amateur the amount of technology packed into this camera is a little daunting but it takes absolute stunning photos. I totally agree with your synopsis and loved your photos you posted on the video. I do not do a lot of videography but when I have focusing has been an issue. My primary subjects have been my grandchildren and my golden retriever and they very rarely sit still lol! Thanks for the review! I purchased an offbrand battery pack to increase the shots per second because I do a lot of wildlife photography. One of the unexpected benefits has been battery life. When I was using the internal batteries I was leapfrogging them quite often as the camera tended to chew through batteries. I still charge them and bring them on shoots but I have not ran the battery pack dead once. I got it though B & H. It also allows me to charge it while on the camera.

I own the D850 and absolutely love it. One of the features I like best is the histogram in live view so you can nail exposure every time by being able to dial in the histogram in real time before you take the shot. Have not seen this in any of the books but found it on UA-cam. Greatest camera I’ve ever owned and I’ve been doing this for over 50 years.

Thank you so much. Yes, the D850 is a good upgrade from the D810. I am happy I made the jump up, but it sure doesn't come without cost. It is tough to stay on the leading wave of new tech. There is always something better.

Good review. I use the D800 and have since it came out and recently while shooting college tennis I dropped it. Repair or spend 3 grand? I am 82 and still busy. My backup is now my D3. I do portraiture for a corporation and some college sports with only Nikon lenses. mostly I use 24-70 1.2 and the 70-200. Heavy to lug around. Thanks and mulling it over.

Last September I was replacing my Nikon D5200and wanted a camera that would last me through my coming retirement. It ended up a decision between the D850 and the Z7. I went for the Z7 solely for the lighter weight, hopefully now I have purchased your training material I will learn to take some amazing images. I am going to take the training at a nice slow pace so that when I retire next year I can spend the time taking some amazing photographs.

I've been shooting Nikon for 50 years starting with a Nikkormat and the legendary F2. Since then I've gone through a D80, a D7200 and a D750. If I had gone directly to a D850 and bypassed the D7200 and D750, I would have saved a whole lot of money and frustration. If your going to commit to landscape photography, go right to the best because I don't think I'll ever have to replace my D850. The dynamic range is so wide I've almost completely quit using HDR, avoiding the mess HDR tends to make out of shadow detail. The Tamron 24-70 is superior to the Nikkor and much less expensive. Thanks for reminding me I own one of the best cameras ever made!

I've currently had my Nikon D750 for 3+ years, and have been happy with my results, and my question would be, would the D850 honestly give me any better images than I currently get? Good glass is essential, and possibly why some of my images aren't dead on is that I use the 28-300mm for many of my shots 90% of the time. I do have the 70-200 F/2.8 and 16-35 F/4 but love the versatility of my longer 28-300 lens. I have a Manfrotto tripod, and two heads, one ball head and a gimbal, and the biggest hinderance to my photography generally is post processing, as I'm all thumbs in Lightroom! I've looked at moving up to the D850, and I realize there are different reasons for many people, but after doing some night photography, the lit back buttons would have been super helpful. I know there are a few other helpful aspects of the D850, but is it worth putting out another $2000. plus, to get it? Just starting on Tim's Photography Webclass....so I'm hoping for miracles....or at least, progress in getting 'quality' images compared to 1 in a 1000 as it is now.

Nice review, I'll watch more of your vids/reviews. I preordered and received my first D850 straight away, early on. I was somewhat pleased but as a D5 and D810 user I was not overwhelmed as most were. I sold it to a wedding photog who was anxious to own.
Last November I bought yet another D850, and seriously, this is an improved camera. I suggest Nikon made running improvements as it was produced and they received information from users. Fantastic camera! Like you I forget to use the tilting live view-

I have had my D850 for more than a year as well and I love it. I agree w some of you cons - I weigh under 100 lbs and for me it's heavy especially w good glass. I too wish the card slots were both XQD but do not miss the flash. Given these, I feel that my 850 is part of me and love photographing with it. It did take me a few months to improve my shooting as flaws are clearly visible with the sensor size. I used to be hesitant to crop and I still avoid it unless necessary but I can make large prints that are pristine from this camera. The grip is great, love ability to change image size right on the back as I often change to 4x5 or 1x1 in camera. Thank you; this was good to hear your review. Leslie

Nice video Tim! I was too tempted to upgrade to d850 after 30 months with d750 but ended up getting the sony a7iii because of the mirrorless tech and the video features that it comes with. 2 things I miss about Nikon - the comfortable grip that dslr gives & the more affordability of lenses. Also, mirrorless sensors get dust on them pretty easily. Apart from these few cons of the mirrorless, I love Sony. If ever I go back to Nikon, I’ll get the d850. Or maybe their mirrorless. Are you keen on shifting to Nikon/Sony mirrorless anytime soon?

    • @TimShieldsPhotography
      @TimShieldsPhotography  5 років тому

Hi Rahul, I was tempted to switch to Sony mirrorless but because I have a good selection of Nikon lenses I have to consider the total cost of a switch. It just isn't worth it for me. The difference would have to be more pronounced, which it isn't. At some point I will most likely go mirrorless, but not yet.

I have a RRS for my older Nikon cameras. RRS, Kirk, and Arca Swiss make high quality stuff. You can't go wrong with either product. I believe the RRS products are a tad higher (which is interesting because the company moved to Colorado from California d/t taxes, rent, etc. but no drop in price for the consumer).

    Hi Tim,
I use a nikon D850 too, I love it, YES, his captor sensor is all that makes this camera good ( Dynamic Range ), and the 45 Mpxls helps too ( I think I won't be interested for more pixels, because it will be only a slighter better but as you know, you must select a faster speed to get the photo sharp and this is the only thing I reproach in Digital Photography, and this will disavandtage the camera ( Shutter Speed ). I don't like to improve in ISO, I know sometimes you have no choice, but when i can stay at 64 ISO I'm mindly secure ( I know it may be only in my mind ) to get the better quality this camera can offer.
I'm not sure when you say that may be the D850 should have resist to the waves of the sea that killed your D800, I also had this one, It was already well built, I think it's only an opinion and I know you are not going to test to have an answer ( Let's stay in reason, it's not an experience to try ).
I LOVE that the pop up flash has disappeared, some blame it, not me, it wasn't aesthetic according to me, but every one has a right to think diffrently( I use the Nikon SU 800 if I want a remote controler, of course, you must buy it separetely, but I have the chance to have one, and it's very useful and MORE aesthetic that the flash pop up ).
I don't use video, but I try to see as any user does because of curiosity, and the AF is not good at all : for video, the solution is ML, for my opinion.
I like the Nikon D850, its sensor captor ( It won the score of 100 on DXO Marks ), its built quality, this is the camera that could nearly be my life camera ( The nexts will be expensive, and the improvements will be to small ( Accordind to me of course ) compared to the price.
I also own the Nikon 14-24, to see yours on your body makes me want to go out and take somes frames with this combo.
Greetings from Reunion Island ( In Indian Ocean, somewhere down Africa, ).

The D850 is a great camera but, we are moving into the mirrorless age and when the equivalent comes out (not Z6/7/50) it should be better than the D850. Which means to me should I invest in the D850 and all the lens or wait and invest in the mirroeless. I ain't rich!

Videos like yours really help people like me make informed decisions on new purchases, so a big thank you from me. Which L bracket did you get for your D850 please? Really enjoyed the video Tim. Many thanks for sharing.

Tim Scanlan Consider a pre loved D810. Way cheaper and almost as good. The D850 high res sensor will cause lots of image blur unless you’re using a tripod or have vr lenses. A perfect pre loved D810 will be less than half the cost of a new D850.

Tim Scanlan Okey Dokey.... But remember you’re going from 24 to 46 mpix. There’s a downside to that if you need to hand hold. That’s why the new 24-70 was introduced with VR. The 36 mpix D810 is problematic enough with non VR lenses. The D850 would need about a minimum 4 times shutter speed compared to focal length if you did need to hand hold without a VR lens. ( Rule of reciprocity ).

Canon has some good things going for it but they don't touch the DR yet and without good dynamic range you might as well get a point and shoot. Well maybe that is a little over the top but Canon does fall short in the Dynamic Range department.

I own the D850 & was also stunned by the incredible dynamic range. I thought I would have to mount a flash to get proper light on foreground subjects with backlight. Not a problem with the D850. I love that you can use a CF Type B card in the XQD slot. Seems a little faster. The D850 is Nikon’s crown jewel of DSLRs.

I own a D850 and simply love it. Mostly I can agree with you. Although, didn't mind that there is an option for SD card. Since SDs prices have really plummeted recently, I can cheaply have like 1TB or more amount of cards. Yep, transfer speed is lower still, even a 95MB/s card is one sec to save an uncompressed 14bit large RAW file, but the 50 full sized RAW buffer can give a lot of room. In landscape, I never needed for more. Even photographing cycling time trial, I was fine with the SD card speed, although I have a backup XQD card. Also brought the official grip for it, not because of the added frame rate, but because time by time I do other types of photography than landscape and it makes easier to handle the camera in portrait orientation. Sure it adds nearly another 500 grams but ads another battery slot as well. the grip is rock solid compared to second market ones. Sure hiking with it up to a mountain is an extra challenge, but for the quality and rigidity I get, I'm okay with it.
My only pain point is focusing in the live view. That one sucks, big time. Although I have it like 8 months, I didn't use the video recording, so I can't say a thing about it. The built-in intervalometer and silent photography modes make this camera a stunning one. With 4k timelapse basically, no hassle needed, in-camera can be done and still there is an option for 8k...

Some great shots there Tim, thanks for the review.
I just sold my D810 thinking it's time to upgrade after 3½ years. I am split between 5DsR, A7R3 and D850. None is perfect, with Canon strengths being sharpness, resolution and color science, Nikon strengths being iso 64 and the clarity and cleanness and 3D-ness of images there, and focus-peaking, and the Sony strengths being 4k video, focus peaking, and IBIS as I often find subjects for intimate landscape that are too tricky to set up a tripod on, or I'm just too lazy but still would like a sharp shot, and IBIS for intended small prints of such subjects would be great to help guarantee sharp images.
One of the worst things for me about the D810 was blown highlights in blue skies (highlights too hot like their RAW processing added excess contrast, where Canon and SOny retained much more natural tonally rich skies), and the unnaturally cooler blue in D810 skies, where they lacked sufficient red content that was there to the naked eye.
With the D850, do you find overly hot blue sky highlights and a red-lean, overly cool color palette? I liked a lot of things about the D810 but these blue sky weaknesses are a big negative for me and would make me look at Sony if they persist in the D850. thanks, Jim

I have been considering this camera. To me it is a tough choice with the Fuji XT3. It has better dynamic range and slightly better low light but is it worth twice as much (you can literally buy two XT3s with money left over) when there are work arounds for those things? The Fuji is a lot smaller, lighter, the equivalent lenses are a lot cheaper and just as good. Smaller and lighter is a lot bigger deal than some people think. The XT3 shoots faster, and has better auto focus. The video features on the D850 are not even close. The XT3 is also built like a tank just like the D850!

As an amateur photographer I was sceptical about spending the sort of money associated with this camera, but i'm so glad I did. The dynamic range has been mind blowing for me. It means I rarely have to use HDR as I can extract so much detail from photos in post editing. I've only had a few opportunities to get out and use it but it has definitely inspired me to get out more and take more photographs.

    • @TimShieldsPhotography

I own it and LOVE it, however for some of the things I shoot I have decided to go back to my D750 and D7100 (my least favorite). I am a "Light Painter" using both the Magilight (of which I have 2) and the Pixelstick. When taking photos I will later use to create .BMP files for these tools I use very little of the resolution of any camera. Since XQD cards are still relatively expensive and I don't the the high resolution any of my DX camera will do. I also shoot a lot of "freeby" events for local organizations that do not have a budget for a photographer. This is good exposure for getting other work later. I have decide for these events to go back to my trusty D750. When shooting the actual Light Painting photos (for exhibition) or when I have a paid shoot I will of course use my D850. One feature you forgot to mention in the backlit buttons on the back of the camera, which are important to me, as I shoot a lot of long exposures at night.

I have two now for Night Time Harness Racing at a track that has old school lighting. ( shooting 1/500 at f4 at 10,000 ISO) I don't think there is another camera that could do what this camera does. I used a D750 and a D850 but the difference was enough to upgrade. The D750 is for corporate/ meetings/ meet and greet shots etc where I don't want the file size. I have 10+ film cameras and despite my love of film nothing matches these files. If only it had Fuji style film simulations. At $4000AUD it is the bargain of the century ( seeing it at $2496 USD at B & H ).
