Jamie - apologies for not seeing this until now. We'd love to say that we have our finger on the pulse of everything, but inn the case of missing this video, we didn't.
Thanks for the review. We are very interested in deepening our knowledge on BFS rods and light rods in particular and your video helps us in that regard.
We just introduced the Kinetic line of rods and I believe that we have a better lineup that includes shorter Ultra Light rods (6'6" in particular.
Anyway, thanks again fron Old 18.

Just got the Kinetic ultralight 7’ spinning rod. What size reel would be the best? I’m not sure what the best option between the legalis, Sahara or nasci

That's is a nice budget BFS rod. I looked it up on their website. They have it for $70 currently and another 15% off for something. I would not have paid what you did. I also have have had the Kastking Zephyr for a couple of years now. I was like you I didn't want to spend much because I didn't know how much I would get into BFS. The rod I currently have is a Sougayilang PAE 602UL . I really like it especially for $35. I can cast 1/10 ounce lures for nearly 100 feet.

I do a lot of bass fishing but where I live every bass lake also has northern pike. Would this rod handle pike well? Also would it work well for throwing out rapalas a descent distance? My current lightest baitcasting setup does not cast lightweight rapalas, even jointed 11 or husky jerk 12 very far at all

I'm a newbie to BFS and have the gear I need except for stick. I looked into the same rod but since I fish from the shore I felt that 7' might be too long. I wish Old18 made a 6' or 6'6" model. Still don't know what to do. Thanks for posting!

Most of your cast should be like a cross body pitch. Just a flick of the wrist really . The hooked up tackle made a video about this. A 7 footer should work fine.

The company belong to some bad ass veterans, and the names and colors are all related to that. The Ascent color is the color Navy paint their battle ships. Something about being hard to see, spot them on the oceans horizon. I have the Light Ascent, it seems to be on the heavy side of the BFS. I also have the UL Buoyancy on pre order, that would be a true BFS. With my current reel and line, I can cast sub 1/8 with the light about 60+ ft. But this weight does not load the rod well enough for longer casts. The Light is still a great set up for Bass and Inshore, maybe a bit to bid for Panfish game.

If you plan on buying an ultralight eventually then I recommend you wait until back in stock. No need to spend money on something you dont really want.

The loop or rectangular hook keeper at least 40 years old... Believe the design there is in the past 10yrs or so. I prefer the loop/rectangular with smaller Hooks (first rod I had with them was almost 40yrs ago 5wt fly rod. and big Hooks work better on the open mostly.

THIS PARTICULAR ROD IS CURRENTLY $70. I would not have the nerve to call a $300 rod a budget rod. Old 18 does have this rod and a couple more for $70 . Which is a very decent price. That's what I paid for my Finwick Eagle a couple of years ago and that's about the most i would spend on a rod. Wonder what this guy spends when he really wants to splurge ?

It's $70 now and another 15% off somehow. Yeah that dude is nuts $300 dollar budget reel 😅. I got a Sougayilang BFS rod for under $35 . Part number.....PAE-602UL. It's damn good for the price.
