    Washington's supplies to the Kiev regime will in no way affect the course or results of the special military operation, they only make things worse for the Ukrainians themselves, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
    Commenting on the words of US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland about "surprises" for Russia on the battlefield, the spokesman said: "As for surprises - yes, the United States, as a direct participant in this conflict, maintains and increases the degree of its direct involvement in this conflict, continues to provoke the Kiev regime to continue the war. This can in no way affect the course of the special military operation. And this can in no way affect the outcome of the special military operation, all goals will be achieved. The Americans are making it more painful for the Ukrainians, the Americans are making it so that more Ukrainians die. It is the Americans who are doing this, and they should understand this.".

    I do not agree that taking the assets of a country that has launched an unprovoked war would undermine the confidence of world markets. All it does is really set the precedent that wars of aggression have a direct financial cost to the aggressor so don't do it. It would also act like a canary in the coal mine if an agreesive state starts pulling their money back home perhaps they are planning to go to war.

    This podcast reports a Ukrainian official as saying that there would be ''no strategic gains even if Avdiivka is taken by Russia.''
    The thousands of Ukrainian soldiers that sacrificed their lives in Bakhmut heard the same rhetoric. If, as most accept, the fighting is attritional in nature, then even if more Russian than Ukrainians are being killed in the Avdiivka area, they can absorb the losses - Ukraine cannot. Zaluzhny's desperate call for an additional 500,000 mobilised men makes this clear.

      Capturing a capital city or a transport hub or perhaps a main power or water source are strategic objectives.
      Capturing a town or city without a specific importance therefore is not a strategic gain.
      However, it is territory and clearly Ukraine wants to reduce Russian territorial gains. And all Ukraine territory is worth fighting for.

    I was very interested to hear the response to the questions from Dom to Lord Ricketts as he appears to have a very common sense approach albeit with a diplomatic flavour.
    I have long held the view that despite the legal ramifications, of which I have little understanding of the details, a solution MUST be found to utilise Russian assets for the good of Ukraine. With all of the institutions involved such as the EU, NATO etc., I am constantly amazed that there were very few chess players around at the time the constitutions were established. How can there be a veto for example from one EU partner that can constipate the remaining 26! Even the UK jury system occasionally allows for a majority verdict when a unanimous one can't be found!
    For my part, I also cannot understand that in establishing a free world order where an international court also has jurisdiction over that agreed order, a means of utilising seized assets of a confirmed aggressor cannot be legally distributed to the victims of the aggressor.
    I'm no mathematician but if the war in Ukraine were to continue for any length of time, the interest from those assets alone could be mind-boggling and are we going to give this to Russia at the end of hostilities just because we cannot conceive of any fair way of using it constructively?

    • @EVG_Channel
      @EVG_Channel 9 місяців тому

      Using those assets provides another issue, it would cause investors to lose confidence in assets in those nations willing to seize assets from their country of origin, if it happens to be some other nation is sanctioned in the future, its citizens may find they will lose their foreign investments. Hence they do not invest to avoid the risk and the economic impact this has on a nation can be dangerous to manage.. this is why is the funds have not been used so far, it sets a precedent (afaik), it is crossing a rubicon.

    • @puntuated7647
      @puntuated7647 9 місяців тому

      I did actually refer to the interest, not the assets. From what I understand, there's no precedent for that and it should be held up as common sense no matter which way it's couched and thereby prevent a lack of confidence in the world order. It must be seen that there are clear consequences for an act of aggression.@@EVG_Channel

    The irony is that both the football clubs´ names, Slovan and Slavia, are related to the word "Slavic". The clubs were named in the late 19th / early 20th century as part of the Czech and Slovak defiance against Austria-Hungary.
    The Czech club Slavia is one of the best, and it has a Ukrainian star player, Taras Kacharaba. It was him who alerted me to the war on February 24th, 2022. The first thing I saw on Facebook was him singing, and the whole stadium with him! "UKRAINE! UKRAINE!"
    It was such a positive shock that Czechs, for whom "Ukrainian" had been a synonym for "blue collar worker" and had never been able to agree on anything, were so absolutely united in their support of Ukraine. At that moment, I understood a HUGE event had taken place and the world had changed.
