You need to disable VRR / Game-Motion / 120hz modes
It needs to run at native 60hz with 16ms refresh, otherwise you will seriously gimp the local dimming, resulting in poor HDR.
Btw huge props to you my friend! Reducing contrast in HDR I thought was a cardinal sin, but it turns out as you point out, that reducing contrast with HGIG, gives the advantage of hard-clipping the peak brightness, and then matching your contrast to fit with it, so you don't clip any highlights (which you do at 50 contrast)
On my QN95A I need contrast reduced to around 39, to avoid any clipping of White, red, green, blue, cyan, magenta.
I specifically chose the 75" to get 1000 dimming zones, achieving much more localized control of contrast.
Whereas the QN90B 65" only have 720 dimming zones, worse PQ eotf tracking, lower contrast, lower peak brightness in real scenes etc etc. (Rtings)

I just got a 65 QN95A as a gaming TV as I got a massive discount on it. Looks amazing, much more pop than my Panasonic OLED TV. Some blooming, mainly on loading screens in games but this TV gets REALLY bright!

  • @Lasse3
    @Lasse3 Рік тому +7

For QN90A - but applies to any QLED in broard terms.
This is Samsungs aporoach with their locally dimmed QLED's
    - due to LCD lifted blacks the image will appear dull and washed out, which is then 'corrected' by overly clipping the colors with too high contrast - making the image pop regardless of poor contrast ratio, - but the image is also much much brighter than the PQ EOTF.
by reducing contrast below clip level, your image will look even duller and matte - that is until you start reducing shadow detail, obtaining real black - allowing you to actually reduce contrast below clip level without the image appearing washed out.
Then a new problem arises, the image is now much darker than PQ EOTF, which then has to be corrected by increasing ST.2086 until you gain the correct amount of brightness.
    +1 ST.2086
    -2 Shadow detail
    39 contrast
    No HGIG.
    No 120hz mode
    No Freesync
-As these will heavily impact local dimming negatively, because of how the image will refresh much faster, reducing the amount of time the local dimming processing can work with each frame.
    Simply running
    -2 ST. 2086
Will not get you true black, and will also overly darken the midtones. An image that in many instances will seem overly dark.
    - and then comes the trap that many fall into, attempting to regain correct brightness by running highly clipped contrast at 45 - 50. This will give an overly dark and contrasty image, with overly bright blown out highlights and overly dark midtones.
In one scene your screen is way too bright, and in the next your screen is overly dark, a real paradox.
If you want your QLED to hit as close to an OLED as possible (though not entirely achieveable) use my approach, - use the PS5 UA-cam app, where you can get loads of test patterns to adjust game mode.
These settings will only work for QN90A game-mode.
    +1 ST.2086
    -2 Shadow detail
    39 contrast

thanks! I like these settings a lot on my qn90b. IDK if the picture is "correct" but I get that "wow this scene looks good" impression more often with these settings than stock game mode and I don´t feel like I´m missing out by not running in movie mode instead.
120hz movie is okay input lag wise but I think it´s still a bit laggier than game mode.

@@LP-mh6ri you can play around with contrast as you please.
      You can also try
      -2 shadow detail
      +2 ST2086
With contrast being a slider you can play around with, 39 might be overly conservative for your taste.
Above 45 and it begins to look criminally clipped though.

I learned how to calibrate my TV watching some of your videos and you’ve always been great with your information. I have a QN90A and since it’s less bright than your TV I had to go to 44 for brightness. Otherwise your settings are very close to mine. I also agree with what you say about sharpness. On my TV I found 10 was a bit high but 8 seemed to give my picture good clarity

QN90A (maybe it also work for QN90B):
On my Game Modes i´m using - 2/-3 bt1886 Gamma and st2084 -2 /-3 (is more close to the curve) because it also help to eliminate some of the pulsaring backlight issues with loading icons and stuff like that. And beside of that, it looks more correct to the standard even with the sdr curve (not flat gamma with local dimming high) it looks natural on testpattern with faces compared to calibrated movie mode. SDR ives u a HDR Feeling and there is no need to force SDR to HDR anymore...
My "final" game mode settings (firmware 2000x)
    /
    SDR
    brightness ~15
contrast 40 (important in SDR to get grey steps without a tint and more natural faces)
color 25 (faces are also natural enough)
    sharpness 0
    tint 0
    local dimming high
    contrast enhancer off
color tone warm 2, +10 red gain
    bt1886 -3 (more depth)
    shadow detail +1
    color gamut auto
    /
    HDR
    brightness 50
    contrast 50
    color 27
    sharpness 0
    tint 0
    local dimming high
    contrast enhancer off
color tone warm 2, +15 red gain
    st2084 -3
    Shadow Detail+1
color gamut auto (dci p3 greyed out)
On external device settings under game mode turn ON Game HDR ("HGIG)
    /
[[[ And if the discoloration processing bothers too much in a game and u need a clean stable picture, but reduced contrast! :
you set local dimming to Low in SDR Game and set bt1886 to 0, shadow details +1, Color 25 and Contrast 20, brightness 26
On HDR you set ST2084 to +2 , shadow detail +1 while you set it on LD Low. Again only for games
Otherwise i would use upper settings. Leave Dynamic Black Equalizer on 0
And on peak brightness settings on consoles i focus 1500 nits ads, 1300 va, also ingame peak. Black is 0, full black. and paper white 200 ingame. Gamma and digital brightness default.
And remember that turning on Game Motion Pluss (0,0 +) helps a bit with the slower dimming. As minimum base
10 blur, 0 judder gives stable 60 fps games a 120fps camera look (work very good)
    and
0 Blur, 10 Judder for stable 30 fps games.
10 blur, 5 judder for stable 30fps games with too much ghosting
Of coruse OFF for the lowest input lag and competitive.

I have the same set and use almost the same settings except the st 2084. I find that too dim. Don't you think it will crush black details which already qn90a does due to aggressive local dimming.

@@aayushmeena3516 no, because the low grayscale in game mode is much brighter. That means u will never lose dark details even with -3. From my measurements -3 with HGIG aka Game HDR on, the curve is closer to the standard. A very bit brighter. You will increase the dynamic range with lowering st2084. While 0 brightens the mid tones and lowers the contrast. U have to set the HDR brightness to around 1700 in games and in consoles. Hdr means not brighter all the time. It is more realistic and the difference between dark and bright is very big. But do what u want or like it is your tv

My recomendation is to enable PC Mode on all HDMI inputs for the best picture quality and response times.

In regard to local dimming set to high or standard. Have you noticed game HUD elements discoloration issue? On QN90A for example in Cyberpunk 2077 if the screen has a lot of dark elements, or dark elements directly behind the HUD the TV dimming algorithm will wash out the whole HUD making it dim and faded. The only mode to prevent it is on the LOW setting. I can even see the algorithm dimming TV's menu elements when you switch options in your video. It's when you have a small menu and are switching between standard and high local dimming options.

I have a Qn95A. These settings I also myself found to be good on QN95A, but right now I'm not so sure.
Game HDR, it does some good, but also bad in my view. I'm still not sure about this one.
Also lowering gamma -2, or -3 affects colors, I'm still not sure. It's more accurate but it's an S shape gamma. And sharpness finally I turned it off, for 1440p+ games. It adds noise and doesn't look that good.
So I just lower the TV contrast and maybe play with in game brightness/gamma.
SDR game mode is worse, overbrightened, not accurate. Mornings look like it's 13:00 o'clock. Samsung should do more for game mode.

@GamingTech-UA-cam is there any difference between S90C and S95B? Isnt the latter supposed to be better than S90C? have you ever used any 55 inch television with a computer?
Isn't 55 inch too big for desktop gaming? Although I have a big desk space I can easily place a 55 inch TV on it but I fear it might give me eye strain which I never experience not even in VR but some people on the internet say 55 inch television will give you eye strain not sure how true that is.
I really like bigger TV's because they are more immersive there is not doubt about that, but I'm afraid 55 will be too big for desktop PC usage, not sure if I should go with LGs 48 inch C2 because of higher PPI and more fitting size for desktop usage, but for $120 more I can get a brand new 55 inch S90C which is better in terms of color and brightness because of the quantum dot panel, don't know man there are so many options, pros and cons for both Samsung and LG OLEDs.
I also saw your videos praising the mini-led QN95B, is it even comparable to QD-OLEDs?

Settings are almost all same on all Samsung TVs. I use mostly same settings like you except Sharpness - 0 at everything, because its oversharpening image and of course Color Tone i personally love Standard. Samsung even have on official site - Standard - Adds no hue to colors. Warm 2 is not looking natural at all if you like yellow text or snow... Those are my personal settings on 65inch Q7F from 2017, enjoy your Samsung and i hope you like it.

Set color space to Native or, set color space to custom select bt2020 then again seitch yo normal, this improves tone mapping a lot. Just try to play a game and go to photo mode during and explosion or looking at the sky, switch color space to native and tone mapping will improve a lot, at expense of color accuracy.

    Hi 👋 GamingTech
    Just one question.
I recently bought the S95B and was wondering how dim the image can get. Honestly I’m really disappointed, cause one of the reasons why I decided to Switch my LG C9 was the max peak brightness of the s95 but it gets really dark after 6 min of playing.

I have a 65" QN90B. The only significant difference in hardware is the lack of the OneConnect box mounted at the lower-center of the TV's back panel. All the inputs are in the right side as usual with Samsung. I honestly think the 90B is the better bang for the buck before diminishing returns, esp if you can get it at Black Friday prices.
