  • mercury 1989 classic 50. i bought this off cl for 100.00. needed the impeller replaced (lu was frozen to the crankshaft.) we ended up blowing apart the original lower unit. had no spark, changed the stator and it fired up!
oh yeah, 115psi in all four holes, thats dead cold sitting for 5 or 6 years. only reason i bought it. score!
still need to replace the switchbox, carb rebuild, lync and sync, check timing. getting so close to getting it on the water.
thats 100, new prop, motor, controls, keys and tilt trim and tilt.

Just had carbs and fuel pump rebuilt. I have the carbs on but I cant remember where the fuel pump lines go. I have this exact motor. If you have any pictures that would be great. (they have been off 8 months)

Mine has a miss at full throttle, besides that it runs great. Do you know how hard it is to rebuild the carburators? I just did plugs and seafoam treatment to see if that helped any?

Rebuild the carbs is easy. Synchro the carbs not so easy. Sounds like a dirty carb. The 45 in the video screamed to say the least.

I ended up selling it to buy a 1994 60hp elhpto for my polar Kraft 1778wb. Then I tore my upper bicep and couldn't use it this year

i dont really care for the mercs (dont kill me). some of the little quirks, expensive ignition items (switch boxes tend to die at the worst times). personally yamaha is the way to go. some evi/johnsons. honda's are nice but tend to be heavy and $$$$$$$ when you need parts. just me. i think that the larger mercs are still mercs. debate is still out on the big ass 4 strokes.

How did you get the lower unit off? I've got the same problem. Thanks.

Nicholas Blanco Beat the Crap out of it. We used wedges as shims to separate the lower. Also turned it upsode down and sprayed pb blaster to try and loosen the drive shaft from the powerhead.

Hi, I have the same motor, just curious how it held up for you? Mine is hard to start and after I've ran it down the lake a while and try to restart it ,it takes a while. Runs Great when it cruising though. Thanks

+95rman i ran the boat and motor for 3 years. Never had any issues. When i bought the motor, it didnt have spark. I replaced the switch box, plugs, wires, fuel pump, rebuilt the carbs, replaced all the fuel lines. The compression i think was 150/150/150/150 so it was a tight motor. My buddy who helped me, said this was the easiest starting motor he ever worked on. It always started on the first click. At 30 degrees outside, she still started on a click of the key. My advice, check the compression, then spark, then fuel. Many factors to having a motor thats easy to start. Hope this helps.

That's a great motor. I bought a 1986 tiller of that model for 200$, it wouldn't start. All it was, was bad fuel. It's a great motor

I have the same motor I just got and the lower unit is stuck like yours was. How did you eventually get yours free to change the impeller. Thanks

Took it to a mechanic, guy had to beat the crap out of it. The drive shaft had rusted in the powerhead.

Have you ever had a issue with it being hard to start when it’s you first start it?
But once it starts it runs good

Charles Love Never had any start issues. One of the best motors ive owned. Always started on first click of the key. Ahe had 150 psi in all 4 plus I had a new trigger, coils, cdi. I miss that motor.

Boats.net or marineengine are my goto. I run champion marine plugs. Oem always for the wire set.
Or, better yet buy from the local marine shop.
      Hope this helps.
