I applaud the microsoft guy, I was yelling from my small soap box that social sciences are not actually sciences and if they want people to call them that, they need embrace the scientific method fully. Glad that I'm not the only one:)

lol there's bias when data gives you facts you don't want to accept or fits your social/political narrative?

The ones who really use to the hilt big data "to promote just about anything they want to promote finding in the data just about anything they want to find" and owing to big data's inherent subjectivity, is physician-populated funding committees.

There are usually reasons why to behind racism or discrimination. For example, less women are engineers, and are less capable/knowledgeable than men, which is why a lot of companies don't have as much women as men as engineers. It's how the world functions, and the data simply is telling what it sees.

Interesting. Everything in society is effectively a story. Even collecting data is eventually attached to a story. We still have to convince people that the story is true or false. Now the question of racist data. Well ask any marginalised person. They were already victims before this new fad came along but what will be interesting is when the powers to be start using this new access to information against people who have pretended there are no issues; that day is coming. There is a serious problem with data science and it seems to be a disease that affects other branches like Biology , Physics etc. They have truly lost that connection to reality; humanity. I think in universities today there must be a pre-requisite to also study philosophy with any science subject. In order to survive and grow and flourish we have got to figure out a way to connect people to people; I mean, why is it so complicated to grasp... I don't get it.

I am always very surprised and puzzled by scientist, who are smart enough to know a ton about Big Data, IT, Brain, but yet have no idea, that Obesity has a huuuuge negative effect on your body and arteries. In times, when we have such an active longevity research and amazing results already, scientist, which loves his work, not willing to live forever to keep his work going by not caring about his health, sounds and looks super strange to me. Please, no offense.

Niskinatorn - question, is criticizing smoking, or making suggestions that intravenous heroin use might not be the best life choice, in your vocabulary is called habit shaming?

Erm you do know that there are people that are gaining weight, even thou they eat about as much as a super model, due to for example thyroid problems, or a myriad of other conditions ? Or has that fact not crossed your super intelligent mind ?

I also do not like the fact that people tend to advertise their feminism/activism/veganism on every occasion they get, but this is a psychological issue. We are discussing a physical issue here. Think about it this way. A lot of people that had weight problems due to medical conditions, tend to be bullied/laugh at/ disregarded by the population, especially during childhood years (to be blunt: imagine being fat as a child at school), which in tend pushes them towards activism/veganism/bloggerism etc... So unless the OP knows for a fact that she is fat due to overeating and not a medical condition which is even more likely due to her being an activist (see the "being fat as a child" argument), then all he is doin is spewing BS. That's my whole point.

Well, that's physically impossible, unless they manage to get some algae in their skin flops that somehow photosynthesizes some energy from the sun to sustain the energy needs that simply carrying the overweight body requires (compared to a super model which I presume is around 16-18 on the BMI scale is). So there's that. But yes, I know there are some very rare conditions that make people overweight. And we have to have compassion and find a way to help them. But for most of the people.. It's just an addiction. I know. I have it! I just fuckin' control it. And no it's not easy. It sucks every time I exercise, it sucks to fast and/or calorically restrict myself in any other way, when I get on the scales and see the magic number, which, when crossed, needs to be addressed. But I fuckin' do it anyway. Because else - I will get fat. And It's unhealthy it costs tax payers (in the countries with normal medicine:) money, it should be dis-incentivized, the same way smoking is. And sorry, but that's the reality. I know it sucks, I had to face it once. But I do not regret it.
