- Ranger is an exciting, romantic film that explores the idea of fate vs. chance in the backdrop of a beautiful fantasy world, loosely based on Tolkien's story of Beren and Luthien.

ADDED 13/04/13 - Some people take issue with Tharatar the Elf having a beard. Let me quote the Wikipedia page for Cirdan the Shipwright, one of the greatest Elves in Middle Earth: 'He had a beard, which was rare for Elves'. Beards are rare, but not impossible for Elves! - Фільми й анімація
really solid, especially the dialogue. From one Tolkien fan to another, I really enjoyed this.
LOL...took me 12 years to stumble on this. Really nicely done!!
This is brilliant. Most short films on UA-cam can't keep my attention for five minutes, but I was fascinated for this entire video.
"I constantly abuse my sword to chose random directions to walk in. It's an expensive habit, but at least I don't have to ask someone...
this is an excellent short film. it is one of my favorite youtube videos, and ive been here for years
Beautiful work, Josh. Mind you, i love Tolkien's work so much that my children were actually christened Frodo (26 now) and Luthien (22).
Excellent imagery, overall well made fan film. Can't wait to see more work!
Great work. The only thing I don't like is that blondie wasn't killed. Anyway, amazing work here. Story is based on Berren and Luthien's story though it just feels simillar, and you don't really steal anything, that's also why it's great.
That was incredible. This story never fails to touch me.
My favorite part in this movie is when the Dragon took back the life gem and the Rangers hand I like when the hero's face with impossible situations and they are near death
Wonderful work
She's so pretty and sweet! :3 I am a big Tolkien fan, and I love this!
Great video I loved it! I'm just curious, the growling sounds the dragon makes sound a lot like Ursa from Dota 2!!
this would remind me more of the version from the book of lost tales 2 than the Sil
No true warrior or swordsman would throw his sword in the air like that!!! It's the most precious gear and possession. It's value beyond measures of gold or silver. It's the manifestation of gallantry and honour. The sword could easily be damaged by such idiotic, barbaric, amateur, careless and unknightly action!!!! Unbelievable!!!
Thank you so much! :)
This was a lovely adaptation of the tale of Beren and Luthien. I think Tolkien would have been proud even if it was changed from the original story and the names were different. Either way, the elements of Beren and Luthien were there.
I throw my sword up in the air sometimes, singing aoooww
Which wayooo.
Becki Reay this comment just made my day
Really
Lol!!!!
Nice. That was good acting and also good directed. The idea is not that new, but it's well done. Even the cgi is good for a "fan film". Keep on doing good work! :-)
Thank you so much for your honest feedback,we really appreciate it (and indeed agree with you!). Yeah, the dragon was tough - usually on films they have like 20-30 people animating beasts and such, we had one guy (Rob Allison), who had like 18 shots to animate on his own! While not perfect, we all agree he did a really good job of it with the time and equipment he had! :) But yes, we wish we could have had more people helping Rob out! Thanks again - constructive criticism is awesome! :)
That was perfect and beautiful and I need to watch it AGAIN!!
Amazing job! Make more Tolkien based films!
This is quite a good film. I am getting more and more interested in Tolkein's world and look forward to reading his books. Erelyn and Ranger are such a beautiful couple. The dragon was alright given this is a short film and not huge budget, still enjoyed it!
beautifully done version of Beren and Luthien tale, congrats!
i can see some elements from beren and luthien...but it is VERY far from that story in so many ways i dont even care to describe them...but as its own tale it is cute enough
I enjoyed this a lot. But I have to admit I laughed when the orc said "Bye bye."
beautiful film! Though I was sure the Luthien character was going to sing him back to life... it was foreshadowed with the flower. And she'd have gotten to rescue him at least once!
Oh but look at me griping. It's wonderful.
Amazing work! I have to confess, I cried (just a bit) listening the elfic song. Damn sensitivity!^^'
This was shot on a 5D - we have moved to Blackmagic Cinema Camera since then, but 5D is a great place to start!
I haven't read the original story in Silmarillion, but this is awesome. My father HAS read the original story, hates PJ's movies due to massive character/tone changes... and also thinks this is awesome. That invisibility cloak trick in the dance scene is hundreds of times more imaginative than anything PJ ever did.
Me and my father sincerely believe that you're the one who should've done LOTR. I don't like PJ's movies, either, but if there's anyone that I know of who has the imagination to remake the LOTR films the way they should've been, it's you. This is utterly fantastic.
I don't hate PJ's direction and influence on the movies completely, but he surely did ruin quite a few parts.
This was beyond my words. I loved the actors. By the way, what was the song Lúthien began to sing at minute 3:27 ? Thank you.
Pretty damn good. I can get behind a longer version of this movie. One of the better ones I've seen. Thanks for sharing it.
Beautiful. Thank you for all the work that went into making this wonderful film!
3:54 It is the strangest, and most beautiful thing I have ever laid eyes on: A girl..
Very nice video! I enjoyed the romance and final battle, I was wondering if perhaps you would consider checking out my own short film adaptation? It's called "In the Forest of Tom Bombadil." Thanks a bunch!
true love; all too rare sadly. Namarie!
Hi, Elessar Telcontar! It looks to be a nice movie... I'll be sure to watch it sometime! ;)
4:20 I LOVE how he says that. It sounds so passionate, desperate, hopeful, and utterly romantic at the same time
Nikita Audio Blaze it. Just kidding lmao.
A lot of good stuff going on with this. Obviously it cuts through what could be a much more epic plot in a matter of minutes, but the acting/singing, cinematography, directing, and invisibility cloak were all done well!
There are a thousand tales across all six continents that have this theme. Thus began the tale of Robin of Sherwood, a very English legend. How many young men have plighted their troth with a girl they loved at first sight, only to lose her when the shadows grew? This stands in both Tolkien's Arda and our own as a tale for all to speak of at the fireside.
" Wonderful...Beautiful...Magnificent..."
This video needs a lot more views. Very nice! I hope you do more in the future.
Holy Crap!!! This was AWESOME!!! Excellent job, great acting, great costumes, character development, environment and sets are brilliant. Very well done!!! So I have but one question, as an aspiring short film writer/direct/producer/actor myself, was this budgeted out of pocket? Or did you get grants to fund this movie?
Not sure at the end. Did healing Ranger deplete the stones power, or was the father returning it to the forest. Also, throwing a broadsword is almost totally ineffective. I know it saves on stunts and vfx but its used too much and too hammy. Good script. maybe more orc next time. Dragons just cost too damn much for what you get.
+irontoad123 Throwing a (Longsword) is actually quite effective if done correctly. I don't know if anyone ever threw it the way he did, but people sometimes threw them straight like an arrow rather than with a spin. It wasn't done often, but in a pinch it could be very helpful. It's also quite powerful. I can throw a sword through a tree.
+44SCB It is powerful. its also obvious whats about to happen. a slug could simply step aside or parry it. if you try throwing a practice sword at a real fighter you will discover it will never hit. fighters dont stand nice and still.
Exquisite. Every aspect of this is beautifully done! Complements on the writing, which helped make this authentic and compelling. The care taken shows in all the visuals, acting, music, animation, cinematography, and editing. Love it.
Amazing! I'd only put Shadow of Mordor by Corridor above this one because of the SFX, but barely. Good plot, could have been a bit better if cg had been less, maybe even not show dragon at all, not really about him anyways. Also, cross bow from that range would have flown through him but oh well. Liked how the orc wasn't entirely evil because he was alone.
Es realmente hermoso saber que hay gente que aprecia tanto la obra del maestro Tolkien y lo plasma en tan buenos trabajos!!!!
Bravo. Your adaptation to screenplay is better than box office. I think you would/will have done(do) his works beautiful justice. You have great taste in what to cut and what to hone in on. Opulent minimalism indeed. ♡
"explores the idea of fate vs. chance" ?
You mean fate vs. Fortune, right? ;)
Thankyou for making this film. I hope someone gives you the reins of a bigger project - especially if it's Tolkien based!
woah this is heart warming and EPIC!
i never reigned under the name Aragorn fyi
+Elessar Telcontar shut up fake..
Lol! I was crowned elessar telcontar. I literally have the crown.
+Elessar Telcontar No
King Aragorn as Aragorn, I would rather die than utter a falsehood! But alas, some have to be shown before they can believe - please see the photos on my public post of Anduril, 'Flame of the West', Gondorian shield, Gondorian banner, the ring of Beren on my hand, Gondorian tunic, and The Elfstone. So, unless I am a valet or thief these prove that I am indeed King Elessar Telcontar. I will think of you as a slightly prior incantation of myself if that is acceptable?
Yay for bearded elves!!
+Jakegothicsnake
He looked like an bearded full belly human.....
Wonderful movie, great piece of art. I'm surprised it only has 48.000 views!!
The only thing that really disappointed me was that Erelyn had her role really circumscribed compared to Luthien. I've always used Luthien as an example against those who claim that Tolkien was sexist or whatever. She's the only (non-Vala) character in the ENTIRE cannon who can claim to have vanquished Morgoth! But unfortunately, this story doesn't give her any of that power or importance.
Otherwise -- AMAZING!
Excelent film,congratulacions👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏#TolkienTalk
Wonderful storytelling. I love how his habit of throwing his sword became his saving grace.
Thank you so much for your lovely responses guys - if you liked it, would love it if you could spread the word! :)
Love from Josh and the Team
Very nice! I am really impressed with this film! I am kind of annoyed it doesn't really follow "The Silmarillion" (I really wanted to see Luthien's dog beat up Sauron), but with only five actors? This story was great!
Enjoyed watching an adaptation of one of the most fantastic stories in the Silmarillion! Thanks
Brilliant. I'm close to tears...
Hands down.
Thank you, Josh Fortune!
Omg I am utterly lost for words. That was very captivating and sweet.
nice movie!!
Ranger : *throws sword for direction*
Sword : *shatters*
Orcs : "Who's making all that racket ?!"
Ranger : "Cucoo ! ... Cucoo ! ... Cucoo !"
Absolutely wonderful movie! Lovely soundtrack!
Beautifully done version of "The Song of Beren and Luthien" "Tienuviel"! Thank you!
Well- to me this proves even with the rough edges that Hollywood could pull off the Silmarillion with the right group of people working on it in a series of films spanning centuries/millennia.
Beren should be portrayed by some handsome and long haired actor
I know, it was just my thought.
I named him Claudius
I have the same tunic as the elf kid (viking tunic)...only difference is the color...;)
All I gotta say is WOW
Beautifully and wonderfully done
Bravo!!!
Where was this filmed?? Such info should also be posted in the credits-especially when such beautiful landscapes are involved.
Wonderful adaptation! Very well written and acted. Great job!
I am alway trying to find filmmakers like this; dreamers who want to see and create wonders, but are held back simply because their dreams are just too big ... Still you chase them and yield such fulfilling stories. Well done, from one independent filmmaker with too much imagination to another, well done. Look me up if you're in the states sometime. Cinematic talent like this can't be ignored.

I think I also fell in love with Ranger at first sight as well. Lol
So this guy throws his sword and... I want the last 24 minutes of my life back.
What does he say in the beginning(0:27)? "Or do we all follow a path set before us?"
Everything about this was gorgeous! Very well done if I may say so! :D
very well done, much better than all b movies of the same. Best of luck to you.
Good job. Very good! Congratulations! #TolkienTalk
8.5/10! What Elvish Language is used here?
I've watched the end 5 times already, it's so good
Very nice. Good work. I will show to my friend.
best short film ever so good why not make a movie next time
It's... amazing. I hope you to become a legend in the cinema, and take it to the big screen.
This video is fantastic! : D You guys have some serious talent
Wonderful adaptation, thank you :)
hands down. this is fucking amazing :D
Just amazing!!, you guys have a very nice work here, well done! :')
This was brilliant! I truly enjoyed it!
Wow. You guys are good enough for studio productions. Obviously there are things that could be improved, but every film is that way. Made six years ago and only now I've found this and am very impressed by it!
Really an excellent job. You are very talented.
Not bad as long as you ignore any connection to Beren and Luthien. You guys really meant " loosely based " lol. Still great work!
This was awesome! I've read from some of your comments and the description that the budget and small staff were problems, but I think you did the best job possible for whatever limits you might have had.
The actor of Erelyn is the cherry on the top
This was really well done! Congratz for the good job!
Great little tale, thank you.
Nicely done! Where did you film this?
Simply beautiful. Hope to see more from you. Well done.
I could watch this over and over again. It's so good.
"I havn't eaten in 7 days or seen any form of life"
*sees an elf*
"Aye girl you trynna fuck"
Really well done though, enjoyed it
Lol
Great effort on a small budget. I think its a marvellous achievement and hope you make more. Bravo
Very nice :) Enjoyed it all the way through
You will forgive me in time
Good job. You made my evening, thanks.
Truly brilliantly done... Thank you so much for making this for us. Absolutely beautiful.
