      Yes, and TY. Let us also remember that Beren and Luthien was really the heart of Tolkien's legendarium, and everything else either leads up to it, or flows from it. This is the love story, along with Tuor's and Idril's, that basically saves the universe, and in Tolkien's fashion, it saves it past, present, and future.

    Take note: she was feminine, but not weak for it. Her femininity was, in fact, the source of her strength.
    So many authors and politicians don't get it. But Tolkien... He got it.

    • @michaelatanasio223
      @michaelatanasio223 4 роки тому +67

      @Bolaji Windapo She wasn't a badass amazon that could be replaced by a man. Her role in the story was destinct from a male archtype- feminine.
      Many feminists pay lip service to the idea of men and women being equal, but insist in women takeing a masculine role. Acting like men. Like feminists secretly belive men are superior. Even as they tear down men for being masculine.
      Tolkien's depiction shows that a woman can be a strong character without that. That women are strong for being women, just as he shows men are strong for being men.

      Tolkien did also dabble in stories with "amazon" women though. Such as Haleth who took up the mantle of chieftain after her father and brother were slain by orcs. She led her people in exile and repelled orc raids and kept a bodyguard of women till the end of her life. Now it bears mentioning that this wasn't originally a culture of warrior women, but refugees picking up spear and bow after many of the adult men had been wiped out in battle, but the point still stands that Tolkien wasn't adverse to women with masculine traits. If anything, what stands out is that Tolkien never imposed an ideal of what women should be.

      @@trolldrool women are idealized just as much in JRRT's fiction as any other, dude. It's fiction. The author can idealize people how ever they please to convey their work to the reader.

      Amazon supposedly has signed an agreement with the Tolkien Estate and HarperCollins (publisher) to create some original stories set on middle earth based on his other writings. I have tried to find any links for current updates but you'd be better off searching on your own. Maybe the most complete description I found was this quote from a couple years ago:
      “We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for ‘The Lord of the Rings,’” said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins. “Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings”

    Beren to Thingol, as written in The Silmarillion:
    “My fate, O King, led me hither, through perils such as few even of the elves would dare. And here I have found what I have sought not indeed, but finding I would possess for ever. For it is above all gold and silver, and beyond all jewels. Neither rock, nor steel, nor the fires of Morgoth, nor all the powers of the Elf-kingdoms, shall keep from me the treasure that I desire. For Lúthien your daughter is the fairest of all the Children of the World. ”

    I wish that the Tolkien film was called "Of Ronald and Edith", since the story of their relationship inspired this tale.

    I usually hate all romance stories. Just not my thing. I call myself the anti-shipper.
    Tolkien is the only writer I can think of that makes me love his love stories!

    • @pittland44
      @pittland44 2 роки тому

      I think there's something to that, because I don't care for most romantic stories either. I think the reason Beren and Luthien resonates with people is much of it is based on Tolkien's relationship with his wife. His description of Luthien, her dancing in the woods, her having a beautiful singing voice, all of that is based on various incidents with his wife. So even if it isn't a true story, it still rings true.

    Seems I heard you casts in reverse order. The lay of Beren & Luthian is my favorite of the Silmarillion. Totally cool that Tolkien saw his wife and himself or at least his kids did within these two and how the fates of all Middle Earth stemmed from thier love for each was bound. In truth what can stand against "True Love" to steal a line from "The Princess Bride."

    Everytime i hear or read this story and see fan fiction with Luthien, i wonder if she (and the story) would be possible to tell in a movie. Arwen and Galadriel is both considered very beautiful, but i think Luthien is another level of beauty. The beauty and purity of Luthien is what drives the story making her character so important, and perhaps the most important character in all the stories from Arda.

    I love Tolkien's legendarium so much but the one thing I noticed that I think could have used some more detail is in some of the stories. Like how a werewolf from time to time ate someone. I just think it could have used some more detail in the writing, like how Tolkien used so much in names and maps etc.
    My favorite content is in the Silmarillion as is the writing but LOTR has some better writing at times. I realise the silmarillion is a sort of half finished book.............love Tolkien what a great man. I hope to meet him one day.
