Gardens, Truck Patches, and Fields - The FHC Show, ep 13

- There are as many different views of what a garden or farm is, as there are farmers and gardeners. And a lot of it has to do with one's culture, experience, or perspective. There are numerous classifications for gardeners, farmers, and the agriculture they practice these days (homesteader, commercial, organic, community supported agriculture, subsistence, permaculture, natural, sustainable agriculture) and all kinds of places to practice these methods (homestead, commercial farm, organic farm, subsistence farm, mini farm, micro farm, hobby farm, cottage farm, small farm).
Farming and gardening is becoming popular again, but knowing where you fit in to this vast world of farms and farming methods is the first step in knowing what you’re trying to accomplish on your farm or in your garden. In this 13th episode of The Farm Hand's Companion Show, Pa Mac explores these things-giving historical perspective along the way-while presenting some of the handicaps he'll be overcoming with his own farm and garden. You'll learn the differences between a garden, a truck patch, and a field.
Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes as often as Pa Mac can crank 'em out and still run a farm. (As long as he's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!)
Also visit www.farmhandsco... to find articles, posts, photographs, and encouragement for today's self-sufficient farm or homestead. (And be sure to check out the General Store for books or DVD's by Pa Mac.)

Thank you for your support!
Folks ought to keep their feet firmly planted in the dirt. Grow things. Enjoy animals, sunshine, and God's good earth. Thanks for the video, sir! The boys are already thrilled at the prospect of watching it tomorrow. Any time we ride in the car, they beg for the laptop so they can turn on an episode of your show. The log chicken coop video is a special favorite; they bob their little heads to the music and daydream about building their own chicken shack. Take care, brother.

Tell your young men Pa Mac says, "Hey", and to keep on dreamin'!
Don't ever change a thing. Your videos are perfect. You're my hero.
+Scott Kline
You got it, Scott.

Hooray, a new FHC video!! Really enjoy all of them. I could watch them over and over.
Rare to see a new video....but like always...a masterpiece of art.....very wistful....
Your videos are like art work! Very thought provoking. Love them!
What I really enjoy about your channel is that it shows all of us the joy from using your own hands making the job of Homesteading, Farming and so forth even better. I'm so happy your channel is on here I as a young farmer look forward to your next video.
I appreciate that so much, Sharona, and thanks for watchin'!
Glad to see you back with some new videos. Always enjoy watching your work
I know this show took time but it was perfectly done and very enjoyable. Thanks you.
+PeriodWoodworker
I appreciate that, PeriodWoodworker!
Good to see you making videos again! I have the first bunch pretty well memorized from repeated watchings and it's nice to have a new one. Please keep them coming when you can, they're greatly appreciated. I really enjoy both the style and the content. Thanks for your time and efforts.
Thanks so much for sharing your videos and family information with us. You’re truly the blessed folks this country was built on. We really appreciate what you are doing to promote taking care of the land and families and becoming communities with decency! !👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Dear friend, thank you so much for making this video. I love the old Scottish-Irish music and all the history you put in. I am envying your land and the endless possibilities you have before you. Good luck and I am feverishly anticipating future videos.
I LOVE this video!! What a great reminder of the past and I loved how you touched on all the different perspectives people have of farming today!
I've never met you my friend, but I find myself praying for you and your family often. I guess I feel like you are a mentor to me and I value very highly the advise and humble wisdom you provide to me.
God bless you brother.
I appreciate that more than you know, motorcyclelad.
To have someone taking a piece of their time to pray for you is humbling indeed, to say the least.
Thank you, Brother

Your videos are so good. I love how you link through to the traditional, and don't take your self so seriously. Thanks for all your efforts.
Fantastic works of art! Nice work. I always enjoy your episodes.
I love this series! I too am trying to re-claim the small farm of my childhood. What a ton of work! I consider myself a homesteader and I have been living this weird life for the last 33+ years even though most of the time I was in the middle of a big city. I too have a rich tradition of farmers in the family, although it skipped entirely the two generations just before me. Some of us have always just heard the beat of a different tune ... and my tune has quite a bit of banjo and dulcimer in it. LOL
Wow we waited a long time for this one!!! Glory be!! Sure glad to see that you're producing again. Thanks so much Pa Mac. Keep them coming please. I really appreciate your insight
and your humor. Delightful !!!
+Eric Sumnicht
Will do, Eric; thank you for your encouragement.
And thanks to everyone else for your kind words.

Brother,
Thank You for this channel. I really enjoy your content The Word says acknowledge him in all our ways and it does my heart good that you do that on this videos. I live in eastern Kentucky and we grow lots of crops on hillsides and them rocks are minerals, so be not discouraged.

+Cassian YHVH
Thank you as always for your kind comment, Cassian!
You have just revitalized me to make a bigger garden then what I currently have. Thank you.
I wish that I could share your videos with everyone I know. You have far more going on in your content than I think you yourself even realize. I never thought that a ‘gardening’ video would bring me to tears... But the funny thing is its not just this video, it’s every one you have. It makes me wanna shake people and make them watch and scream, ‘This is what you need to see!’ Many prayers and blessings be poured upon you and your family. I thank you from the depths of my soul for you sharing of your experiences. Please keep them coming. You inspire me secondly only to the Good News. I thank you so much for sharing your insights... And this coming from a practically stay at home dad if two boys with barely enough time to keep the house in order. I have my plans too, and the good Lord willing, I’ll get to teach them what I was taught since my earliest memories. God bless you and yours.
Thank you so much for your kind words, mobilenoble27. I appreciate the encouragement more than you know.
(And may God richly bless you and both your sons.)
Glad to see the new video. Can't wait for more.
Dear Pa Mac,
My comments to you are always sincere, but a bit tongue in cheek. I would like to take the time to seriously thank you for the time and effort you put into making these videos. I truly believe that you rank high within the best that UA-cam has to offer. No matter how long the wait for new content, I never get tired of checking for an upload, and you never disappoint. You will go down in UA-cam history my friend. Thanks for all you do. Keep it up.
Your old pal,
Jerms
+Jeremy Shock
You're always so kind, Jeremy. I sincerely appreciate your encouragement.
Yours,
Pa Mac
Truck Patch = It took a truck to hall it away. Love your shows but if you can slow down a bit im a slow reader ; )
Like everyone else, waited a long time for another video. Not disappointed, either! Looking forward to more insight and thoughts from you as you continue your adventure/lifestyle on your farm.
Glad to see you are back. We need more videos like yours.
Yea!!! I was pleasantly surprised and excited to find that.......you're back!!!! I enjoyed this latest video as I have all the others. Please keep 'em coming!!! I really enjoy them!!! As a single 50yo woman with 5 acres I am a "young" gardener, homesteader, farmer too!!! Thanks for sharing :)
Just when I think its time to stop checking the channel. Along comes another enjoyable episode.
I started watching you're videos when I was around 13 or so (I'm 16 now). I'd say you were a huge inspiration for me to pursue homesteading one day. Since then, I've taught myself basic carpentry, I grow my own garden and have given a hand at chickens and ducks. thank you, very much for these wonderful videos
your videos*
+bryby216
Well, I really appreciate your watchin' the show over these few years, bryby216!
I wish you the best as you continue to know the joys of workin' with your hands and enjoying the fruit of your labors.
May you live for many years yet and continue making this series. I want to see the whole farm and cows and crops and everything! :)
Really well done! Thank you!
Pa Mac thanks for all the time you put into these videos. I have enjoyed every one! They have taught me many new and old things! What I don't know is where do you find the time to do it all! Please keep making them.
Your farmhand at heart Mel
I am sooo glad you made another video some of the best down to earth videos ever
Great video, glad to see your back and, thanks for taking the time to make them. I really enjoy them a lot!
Great to see you had time to make another video! Thanks for sharing with us.

+Desert Digger
I appreciate that, Desert Digger, and you're very welcome!
I can't believe any one would give you a thumb down. love your stuff and glad you are putting some more stuff together.
Been waiting eagerly for these new season videos you've been a inspiration for getting my stuff done around my house
We did truck patch gardening. We called it a truck patch because you grew so much of something that you had to have a truck to haul it out of the garden. We did over an acre of pumpkins, an acre of sweet corn, 2 acres of pop corn, 1/2 acre of white crook neck squash, 1/2 acre of tomatoes. When time to harvest, we actually took our tall sided wagon attached to our tractor and filled it with produce (except tomatoes, which where done by 5 gallon buckets)
Nice to see a new video Pa! I have the same hilly, rocky soil at our land, so I'll be watching to see how you tackle it. Love the videos and watching your great progress.
Somehow I missed this being posted, so I am glad I checked your channel and found I had missed this episode.
Especially since I really enjoyed the whole breaking down the labeling and naming.
No matter what name used, you are producing some very appreciated videos that help folks who go by many different labels but in essence are all doing something similar, getting their hands dirty and producing food. For themselves, others, or even commercially.
I have seen quite a big resurgence in Back to the Land type homesteading. For many various reasons people are heading back to living and working on land. Building up many different takes on how to homestead, or go off grid, or do organic, or permaculture, or be a prepper. I think it is great. While there was a back to land movement back in the 60-70's it was isolating, but now days most of these folks make sure to have internet. The internet has helped build community of these like minded folks even when they are across the country, or even the world from each other. Knowledge is shared, emotional support is given, advice and suggestion easy to get when you have questions, examples of what works and what doesn't available to research, and so much more. I think this modern back to land movement is going to succeed a lot more than previous one due to this ability to stay connected.
Love it! Glad to see your back Pa Mac
interestingly complied, thank you for an entertaining presentation.
Hello Pa Mac, great to see your progress! Don't know how I missed this until today, we have been looking forward to seeing an update from you. We are two years into transforming what used to be a farm many years ago back into a homestead. All that was left was raw land, but some good soil and a spring that runs through it. We planted our first garden just a few years ago, so lots to learn for us folks in our 40's just getting started! Your videos provide us with a lot of laughs and inspiration, thank you
My best to you as you get things goin' on your homestead!
Take care, and thanks for watchin'!
Yay! Welcome back Pa Mac! We missed you!
I hope you make many more. I have ten apple trees, then added eight blueberries and some other stuff. I planted the apple trees because I was inspired by one of your first videos. Thank you.
Enjoyed the video! I'm glad to see you posting again, your work has been missed.
Great stuff pa Mac. Glad you found the time to make another video.
Great video, nice to see you back, looking forward to the next one.
Good to see you back on UA-cam, have been suffering withdrawals over the last several months!
binge watched all of your videos on a school night last year. checked back everyday and it finally payed off with a new video
The beautiful thing about turnips, is that hogs will turn them into side pork. Love the videos.
Great fun. I enjoyed your video. I bought a farm in KY. It has been unused for years. We are planting the bottom here and there. It is going to be big fun. Thanks for the inspiration.
+Frank B
My best wishes to you as you work your KY farm!
Yes, Mac. Good to see you again, I missed you.
Amazing video-as usual. You had me hooked on the polebarn series... so much to learn from your channel! THANK YOU
+HomeSteadHow
I appreciate that HomeSteadHow, and you keep up the good work on your fine videos as well!
Pa Mac
Nice to see you back.
so nice to see you again. great choice on the raucous fiddle music in the middle
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for another great video - very thoughtful. As we work to develop our property we too have been faced with a myriad of "definitions", all with good people behind them who have great "systems" that we have thought about copying. What we're starting to learn, however, is to just watch and listen to our land, take the best from the advice of others (and ancestors, as you note), and do the best we can, God willing.
Can't wait to see what direction you go!
+John Latham
Those are valuable words, John.
If yall will "watch and listen to your land, take the best from the advice of others (and ancestors), and do the best you can, God willing"...you'll be doin' what countless other settlers, farmers, and homesteaders have done for ages!
My best to you and yours as you work with your hands,
Pa Mac
My great Uncle Bill was a truck farmer. His big cash crop was first to market with tomatoes. He would start them from seed on cookie trays in the window, then to the cold frame and finally to the garden. After the first rush of that crop it was pole beans, bush beans, lima beans, and lady peas. He and Aunt Mary lived in a shotgun house with electricity, but no indoor plumbing for years. Their water came off of the roof into a cistern with a pitcher pump and quart jar full of water to prime the pump with. They had chickens for eggs and meat. Uncle Bill used a mule to work his farm, until the mule died. From then on a neighbor would come over with an 8N tractor and break the ground in his field each year. It was a small field only about 2 acres or so. When the water district came down the road he latched on and added a bedroom bathroom and had water run into the kitchen. Aunt Mary and Uncle Bill were married for over 50 years and subsistence farming is all that they knew.
A great video, and great questions brought up. May you be blessed on your land!
+Marqueta Graham p.s. My daughter wants to know the names of the music playing during your video?
Really enjoy your common sense approach to everything, along with your sense of humour! If you make many videos like this one, you wont have time for farming!
i always enjoy your episodes and am only a backyard gardener growing comfrey, tomatoes, eggplant, dwarf papayas and a few more. i learn watching your show and hope to be in the same situation some day. thanks
So glad you're back!
It's good to see you again. We really enjoyed the new video and are looking forward to the next one.
+Kathleen Bobbitt
Thank you so much, Kathleen! It's always good to hear from you.
And thanks to everyone else for your kind comments.
Pa Mac

+Dave G
Thank you for watchin', Dave.
Tell your son I said "Hey!"
You really do a fine job!! Brings back many good memories. :)
thank you for the new video! I always learn so much from them, and I've even implemented what I've learned. I built my chicken coop and goat shelter based on your log chicken coop. I checked back to re-watch your video on the stone floor (I'm about to start making the stone floor for my Rabbit barn) and there was a new video! I'm excited to see more new videos whenever you post them. thank you.
You bet, Azaora Azaora!
My best to you as you keep on buildin' and farmin'
Pa Mac
My favorite channel
nice to see you again....
Just found your channel and love, love, love what you do. Gardener? Farmer? Builder? Craftsman? Stonemason? Woodsman? Illustrator? All of the above....you can do anything. Thanks for stimulating some deep thought on this topic.
Thank you, Barbara; and thanks so much for watchin'
Thank you for these quality educational videos, i have learnt so much
It's one of my main reasons for doin' the show, dewert2. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch.
This took me back to my childhood. Thanks very much. I would love to do this myself, but age and health issues seem to be in the way. I am glad for you to be able to do it though. I enjoy your videos so much.
I appreciate that, Larry! Thanks so much for watchin'.
I love the Joel Salatin plug!
Just came in from tilling in the garden and saw this posted up. Great to see you back. I enjoyed the video and hope to see them a little more often but I know it is getting on to the busy time.
Pa Mac , I'd take you as a small holder , not a gardener not as big as a farmer , but a farmer with a small holding . Maybe that fits at the moment . Your information and style of graphics is a pleasure to watch and I look forward to your letters from your lovely place . Great video 👍🇬🇧
You toke the making videos to another level and stopped just when youtube make the bigbang and everyone is making videos, (plus making that house is not something that takes 2 weekends...). So nice to have found you here. Keep rocking!
I want to live a lot closer to my food too. I liked seeing your pigs and reading your thoughts on agrarian life.
+Warren Postma
Thank you so much, Warren!
FINALLY!!!! Was beginning to think you fell in a hole. Thanks so much for posting again mate missed your vids and your great tunes.
+powderedtoast man
Thank you so much, powderedtoast man
Glad to see you back again! We're at a similar stage. We just moved onto our farm, got a few goats and a donkey but were too late to get in a spring garden. After closer inspection of our crop area we feel it necessary to make it a little more conducive to sustained gardening so we may not produce too much this year, perhaps a fall garden.
Hey there Feller. Good to see your back..
Welcome back, great video as always, love the celtic theme....:)
Man, i missed you. :D Just the other day i checked your channel thinking UA-cam didn't update. :)
Awesome words on the purpose of a new age farmer and you're absolutely right, even here in Europe, a lot of people are going back to their roots so to speak. Which is grand.
+aserta
It sure is grand, aserta! Thanks for watchin'
love your videos... inspirational
well done sir!
+sunny patch farm
Thank you, sunny patch farm.
And thanks to everyone else for your kind comments, too!
Thanks for the awesome video! It gives me a lot to think about for the property that I have. Hope to see more videos in the near future.
+Steve Crider
My best to you and yours as you prepare to work on your property, Steve!
Pa Mac
I was plum tickled pink to see a new episode of Farm Hand's Companion!! There's just something about your theme/background music that stirs my soul. I can't explain it. It's foot-stompin' good!! And seeing you working your piece of land is inspiring. I just wish I lived in your neck of the woods and could come apprentice with you (although I'd be a somewhat old apprentice). Oh well, I'll take what I can get in your videos. Good day to you, sir and God bless!
On another note, how do you feel about burning wood and spreading the ashes on the soil? Does that help improve the soil? Can it hurt? I thought that may be why you had that fire burning. Nice turnip greens, by the way! We grew some here a few years ago. The greens did good, but the turnips never amounted to much.
+SouthernPitt
Hey SouthernPitt,
I feel real good about spreading hardwood ashes on the soil. It tends to bring a touch more sweetening to a sour (acidic) dirt. I generally spread em from my fireplace through the winter over the garden and over areas that will soon be gardened or cropped. I do it very sparingly, though; it's not something you want to over-do or it could set things back awhile.
Thanks, too, for your kind words about the show, SouthernPitt!
Glad you are back! Another great video!
Love your channel, especially the music! Glad to see more videos! Hope all has been well
I appreciate that, Matthew; thank you for watchin'
Dear Pa Mac love all your videos and that living life I dreaming for long time . in my country Singapore totally don't have the kind of place to let us live in such way. good luck
Thanks for the pole barn book and the inspiration. I started my own channel to chronicle my homestead and other projects. I stacked the logs for dryin, next is to mill lumber!
+Homestead Pilgrim
Keep up the good work with your videos, Homestead Pilgrim!
Thanks for watchin'!
Good to see the apple countdown going on.
