Freight Train Stall on Porcupine Hill - Re Upload.

- I've had requests over the years to re upload the original series of this into one video. During a recent hard drive clean up I found the files so decided to put them up as one. I've also included the scenes from earlier in the afternoon before the actual stall.
At the time El Zorro had just started to lease anything and everything they could get their hands on, including these loco's that had been preserved. Up until this point, they would run the occasional passenger special, but putting them back to work hauling revenue freight for the first time in about 10 + years, and also during summer, any mechanical issues became obvious fairly quickly. Failures in the early days of these operations were quite common.
Seymour Rail Heritage Centres S303-B74-T357-T378 on 9062 ELZ grain from Woorinen were already having over heating issues earlier in the afternoon going by the open engine room doors, and later on during the climb up the 1 in 57 ( 1 .75% ) Porcupine Hill, T378 decided it had finally had enough and shut down, leaving S303-B74-T357 to try and get the 28 loaded grain hoppers over the crest on their own.
Needless to say this caused quite a bit of disruption to the regular passenger services to/from Bendigo while this took place. Wed 23/12/09 - Авто та транспорт

The trick is not to rev the f!.,.ck out of the motors and overheat everything but to gently keep power on as this driver did to defeat the stall. Well done to the train crew!

Wow, what a sound. Plus the bonus of night time so you can see the wheel slip indicator lighting up the cab of T 357.

@@paulquick8806 Okie, at 27:02 in the video, locomotive T 357. In the cab you can see a red light (it is on the control stand which you can't see) bathing the interior of the cab that corresponds to the prime-mover being controlled to stop wheelslip. You can hear it as well if you listen to the prime-mover.
@@paulquick8806 It is a light on the control stand of the locomotive. At 27:02 you can see the bright indicator lamp bathing the cab of T 357 in it's red glow.

EMD as all ways at that time built some of the world's best Locomotives. These old girls, don't know the me meaning of quit, still going strong after all these decades. Great video, thanks. The E, and F units were some of my favorite engines.

I see railroad mangement in Australia has the same flat earth mentality as in the USA. Since its flat on paper, they can use less power. 😝

I remember many many years ago a EMD Locomotive stalled on the Dandenong line and it held up a Blue Harris passenger train between Springvale and Westall. These Locomotives would not be able to handle going over Skyrail, they're so sluggish, haven't got enough grunt.

Classic EMD sound that little by little is going away. There will never be anything else like the sound of a two-stroke EMD. Wow y'all down under have more graffiti artists than we do up here

You can actually hear how hot it is at the 2-minute mark. Notice how the locomotives sound muffled until they're in extreme close proximity.
On the other end of the spectrum, in 40 below temperatures (Fahrenheit or Centigrade - it doesn't matter, because it's where the scales cross), the amount of treble from even distant sounds can be ear-piercing. Things located several miles away can sound like they're across the street.

There's wheel slip. You can see the indicator triggering in T357.

That was a risky trip by only having a B, S & two T's. Shame they didn't have X31 or S313, would have got them home. Great video!
At this point, X31 was still a long way off completion, and I don't think Steamrail had hired anything out at this point. This was about all ELZ could get.
I think 40 years ago that train with a S,B and 2 Tclass engines would not have stalled. There is more than 4000 hp with all them locos hooked up.
I've shoveled a lot of rock and sand to get traction for the old units . Especially behind tie gangs .
the wheelslip warning light is active on the thrid loco..you see the red shadow in the cab.
the youtube algorithm thought i might be interested in watching this again. it was correct. if there are any drivers in the audience, can you explain why the driver notches up then down to lift the load and why flat out wont lift the load. does this same technique work with any other sort of loco?

What's in the covered hoppers, that it stalled 4 engines? Doesn't appear to be that long of a train, that it would even need more motive power?

Wheat properly around 1500 tons going up a long gradient near Bendigo recipe for stall out not enough primary power for the weight and track gradient driver does a great job to get up with minimum wheel spin etc

Those look like E8 or E9 locos. Didn’t they have 2 prime movers in them. Emd Made a hell of a locomotive for them to be as d as they are still in mainline service.
