  • In 2011 Southern Shorthaul Railroad commenced an operation to haul coal from Newstan colliery to the unloader on Kooragang Island in Newcastle. The loaded 4000 tonnes trains faced an immediate 1 in 40 grade away from the junction of the colliery branch with the main northern line at Fassifern, necessitating the use of bank engines to help with the climb to the summit. The following scenes illustrate some of the locomotive combinations used on this impressive operation.
