  • English - Welcome to another Schony747 train presentation. This time it's a fantastic sounding presentation that is worth turning up the sound for!
Once again some of the former Victorian Railways EMD Locomotives came to the rescue of a Qube Grain Train that had stalled up the 1 in 52 grade Warrenheip Bank near Ballarat in Victoria. G521 and G512 saw themselves stranded half way up the bank with a fully loaded consist of grain wagons. X31 from dating back to 1966 and T376 from 1964 were called on to add the extra horsepower for the final leg to Melbourne.
All locomotives were on line as the stalled train started to move up the bank. The sanders on the locomotives were working overtime as well to stop the train slipping down the grade.

      Same mechanicals, different clothes.
Sure the Pilbera iron ore lines have American locos (only slightly modified) inc GE AC 6000 CW's (all now scrapped). But 1 loco on the mainline (former government railways) look the most American, well out of the hood units, anyway. The Western Australian L class. You'd have to look twice to see its not a Yankie, some like an SD (in fact it, along with many locos in Australia, is basically an SD 40 mechanically.

@@johnsergei I'm a retired US engineer. I have to know why all the GE's are scrapped. I'm an EMD man myself, ALCo second, never liked GE engines. I operated GG1's-E33/44 electrics, all kinds of GE's from U25B/C's all the way up those miserable P42's on AMT.

@@gordonvincent731 If were talking early diesels, proir to the 1990s (& the privatisation of Australias State government railways) GE diesels were almost unhered of here.
Evey state had its own idea on how to run its railways & most states, had a different gauge to it neibour, so there was little loco sharing (selling etc).
The early diesels were almost exlusivsally EMD, Alco, English Electric & with small Walkers diesel hydralic hood units (usually with Catapillar engines) as shunters on mainly the narrow gauge systems.
The Emu Bay Railway, a once private mining line in Tasmainia used these little Walker locos, to haul their trains, a bit like a miniture version of the Pilbera trains or an American coal train.
But even 4 x 55t locos is still a decent amount of heavy metal. @ some stage they regually ran fewer but longer trains with 7 locos up front.
These machines were smaller than even most shunters on the government railways & most of these were from those 3 big makers, with few from EMD, (with the exeption of Vicrorian Railways)
Only NSW, Victoria & South Australia had standard gauge or broad gauge tracks & here, even their early diesels were big.
Federal government (that ran the long distanse transconinental lines, mostly in South Australia) used EMDs. NSW has a small number of EMDs. Victorian railways was all EMD (apart from some early shunters & none were Alco or GE) So, wrong state if yuu, didn't like that those 2 strokers.
South Australia was mostly Aloo, with the EE 900 class, one of my favourite locos. There was nothing like them, They look very American, but there was nothing like thrm over there ether. Alco PA looks similar, but inside a 900 you'll find EE 16 cylinder 4 stroke diesel, they stutter, they don't splutter like an Alco.
The biggest system, NSW ordered Alcos, mostly & the private Pilbera mining lines, used Alcos that even today, are too heavy for the governmbent mainlines. Most of those oldies are now gone. They did have a few EMDs up there in the late 70s, but I think they were sold of to an American railroad. Pity that @ least 1 6000CW wasn't saved, but no buyer could be found & like a ship, the scrap price makes selling fror scrap, a viable option. It is 200t of metal after all. Shove it onto a beach in Bangladesh?
Today, You can still here 2 stroke EMDs but only on some trains on certain lines (usually a mixed consist, newer 4 stroke GEs etc) EMD 2 strokers haul some passenger trains in Victoria still (N class) Alcos will be hard to find today, but a few are still in uses. Locos like the NR & similar looking quiet beasts, dominate, nowdays. But once, it was the Australan eqivilent of an F series EMD, or a World Series Alco, based on the FA. or smaller 6 cylinder hood units of those machines.Funny that, the small brancline units were the most numerous, but on the mainline, you saw more of the big stuff.
