Thanks so much for your videos and your book. I'm excited for Volume II! :) My issue was that my gelding would fade away as he came out of the second barrel causing our path to "arc" from 2nd to 3rd. I watched my video repeatedly and noticed that I was not staying seated through the turn. I would get ahead of him and into my "go" position too early and shift my weight to the outside. I fixed this by circling the barrels twice during slow work until I taught myself to stay seated. Thanks!

You might try increasing to 3/4 speed or whatever speed that this tendency comes up and then correct it then and there. Almost always I find that the problems are indeed there going slow, but are super subtle! In rare cases though you sometimes have to fix the problems at speed! You might search for "Speed Kills" on the Barrel Racing Tips web site for an article that may help! ;)

In this case I would assume that someone may have over exaggerated the pocket in the initial training or it could be a habit the horse picked up along the way. It may have become hard wired over time and something that she reverts to at speed only. You might spend some time going 3/4 speed with this horse, correcting as you go and gradually increase to a full run. Pay close attention to rider position and also brush up responsiveness in general so you can place her feet anywhere at any time!

My horse has tended to be opposite she is staying almost too close to the barrel, she keeps her head tilted in towards the barrel too long instead of taking off to the second barrel. any suggestions?

Ashley, search for my "wide turns" post at BarrelRacingTips.com, it will offer insight for turns that are too tight as well. In general, you'll want to use your hands less and your body language and focus more to guide your horse.

Hello! Thanks for the video! Very informative as usual :) Since you asked for comments...here you go- I have a mare my daughter rides that likes to drift right BEFORE the turn. Sometimes this causes her to hit the barrel as she comes out. Her slow work is good but she has trouble taking her straight to the pocket during a run. Any tips or ideas? I have video links I can send you if needed...thx!
