HARLEY Davidson SHOVELHEAD Solid LIFTERS And CAMSHAFT Replacement INSTALL For HYDRAULIC & OEM CAM
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 лип 2023
- After over a year of riding my 1979 Harley Davidson Shovelhead with solid lifters, I decided it was finally time to replace the solid lifters and install new hydraulic lifters with a new Andrews H Grind camshaft with OEM Specs. This was decided upon after the most recent attempt to routinely check the pushrod adjustment, and found that the camshaft had a couple of flat spots.

You are a great mechanic. Don’t let anyone tell you anything different, not even yourself. I love your videos, very entertaining and knowledgeable. I have friends that have been riding over 30 years that can’t change a freaking spark plug or their oil, sometimes it’s embarrassing 😂😂😂
Thank you, Ricky
Amen Brother 🙏
Thanks for the shout out Corey, I am glad that the cam got you back on the road, take care S.
Sure thing, Steve. Thanks so much!
It's a beautiful thing to admit your love for Christ ! Props to you Corey...AKA ST !
Man, that cam had to have been SLAMMING into the lifter! You should pick up a lot of torque with the valves staying closed when they are supposed to be closed. Your springs probably breathed a big sigh of relief, too! Ol' Pacific Mike has ALL his ducks in a row, don't he? I can't wait to see him get back on the Big Flathead....Thanks for bringing us along, Tramp...That's a funkadelic soundtrack, too! It helps take away the sadness from not being able to ride without getting rained on. This has been one rainy summer! Good camerawork, Tha Missus! :) Enjoy your weekend, err'body!
Good to see you and Kim. Good video. I wish I could do the things you do, I would save a lot of money. That was so nice to see Mark, He was nice to talk to when I was there. Tell him I say hi. Stay well and keep the chin up, we all have down days. This to shall pass. Stay safe and well Buddy.
Hey Joe. Great to see you. I'll tell Mark you said hello.
Love your vids. And it’s also great that you’re a brother in Christ as well.
We are uplifted by your successes, and patient with your challenges. And I always learn something new. Thanks brotherman~~
Thank you, Michael
Good to see you. I met you and your wife at Barber Vintage event last year (lunch time).. I have your sticker on my computer and it reminds me of the event and you two nice people. Glad you got that thing running good! I have been an avid biker for 57 years.
Hey, man! I remember you! Good to see you again!🙂
Glad you’re back. I have been wanting to check the cam bearing on my 93 Heritage since I heard they put an INA bearing in them that year. It has had a cam and lifter change (Jim’s Hydrosolids) and adjustable pushrods. I pulled them out and checked them when I bought it because I read the lifters needed changing around thirty thousand miles but I didn’t check the cam bearing because I didn’t know at the time about the INA bearing. I’m hoping it’s been changed since they did the cam and lifter swap. Always learn something from you.
Yeah, for some odd reason Harley started using the INA bearing in 92. Hope who whoever did the work had enough sense to swap that out. That doesn't mean it's going to fail if they didn't, but you never hear of a Torrington style bearing going out. You're right about the lifters. I've had to swap them out on my softail and my bagger just between 30k to 40k because of a roller giving out.
Hello!
That is a nice sound, i like to hear! :) Have nothing, but respect for people who can fix their bikes! Take care! ~ Hardy MAAS
No one knows everything but it looks like you know enough to get the job done correctly
Either that, or I'm just lucky most of the time. Lol
Cory you are so blessed with having such a collection of great motorcycles.
Well tramp you gave me motivation to open up the cam chest in my twin cam 96 in my softail and check the tensioner shoes and just an overall inspection. Having church at the bike shop was cool too. Need more of that. This world needs Jesus!
Nice Job getting it done!
Very cool a building doesn't make a church. I like your installation of the cam you kept me interested the entire video.
Love your videos and enjoy the content wrenching on old bikes.
Cool. I feel like I'm right there with you, fixing adjusting, those great old engines!
It may not be that your skill is a pro level, but your passion is hard core and old Skool all over ya! Love it.
That is a great stocker Shovel
What can i say.......educational, entertaining........just great fun to watch. And.....you"re very much underestimating your mechanical skills. 😃👍 Hope the rain stopped and you get some dry sunny days to ride those bikes. 🤘👋
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video as usual! Don't worry about how many videos you make, just make them when you can!
Thanks! Will do!
Awesome video, Saddle Tramp! The Shovel sounds great.
Agreed! Thanks, bud!
Damn...miss ya dude !!!
Missed you guys too
Glad you were able to get the cam changed out and finally got the push rods sounding like you wanted. Something about old bikes... if it aint one things its another.
I love your honesty and even if I know the edited vid makes you look like a better mechanic than you are you ARE a way better one than I. ;). I'm kinda glad though cause I'd have a garage AND back yard full of bikes in various stages of needing work instead of the one bike I take in once in a while. PS: My best friend as a teenager was in that movie. Sho Nuff!!
Awesome! I love that movie!
Cool vid man, always watching from here in NZ. God bless you and the Mrs.
Right on, CJ! Thank you!
Good job Tramp!!!! Like you, I’ve always pumped up hydraulic lifters with oil, I thought that was mandatory!!! But what do i know. And man you really struck a chord with me, when you said “ you just didn’t feel like filming lately “ and it’s not a “how to “ “ step by step” channel. I consider you one of the real “OG” wrenching and riding motorcycle content UA-camrs, I’ve only been making UA-cam content seriously for like 4 months now, and i too get in those moods like i just don’t feel like filming, i just wanna wrench in private, and i too dam sure don’t wanna film a step by step video, cuz im no expert, and half the time im fumbling my way through, and learning as i go along!!! Lol. Moral of my story is don’t worry about step by step how to, we just enjoy tagging along with ya in your garage and in your travels, so love it or leave it , that’s my motto putting out this UA-cam stuff. What brings me to your channel is your raw honesty, and that you’ll show your mistakes and mess ups, that we ALL do!!! So keep your head up and keep on doing what your doing!!!! 👍 SLICK
Thanks, Slick. That means a lot.
If it makes you guys feel any better, I just spent all week picking away at my 2002 Electra Glide Standard (replaced the tranny gear set) only to get two miles down the road and It was pissing like a dog on a hydrant. I convert all my final belt drives to chain and the new chain pulley main gear shaft spacer is beveled, I don't thing my quad seal set correctly. Guess what I'm doing for probably 4 hours today? lol.
It's gotta get pretty aggravating at times, especially when certain individuals have all the f****** answers or want to tell you what you did wrong, thanks for the tip Captain Obvious but I'm an unprofessional backyard mechanic.
FWIW, both of you make great content and you described it best Slick (Raw) material for the everyday Grease Monkeys such as ourselves.
@@getoffmygrass6974 yeah bro, right on!! 👍
Love ur videos man
Great Job! As always thanks for sharing!
My pleasure!
Love your videos. Always entertaining and informative. Also love your stand for the Lord. Hate that you’re going through a hard time. Just keep trusting in Him,🙏🏻😁.
Hey Bobby... Good to see you. Thanks so much!
You are one really cool man. Love watching your videos. Rock on my friend
Thank you kindly
Great work Corey. It's ok to have those days where you're just not feeling it and if people don't like it, F*** em' if they can't take a joke.
👍, from Ireland dude, proper old skool..........
Yay!!!!
5 stars!
Lovin' y'all,Praise Jesus!
Thanks, man!
I was reaching for my pocket flashlight when you were looking at your timing marks. It’s become as necessary for me as a pocket knife. It’s amazing how many times a day I use it.
Great stuff brother always enjoy seam's to me your one hell of a mechanic keep up the great work looking forward to more ride safe my friend
Thanks 👍
Always enjoy your videos....God bless
Thanks, Charles. Glad you can dig it
Right on, Tramp!
Thank you, Tracy
Good stuff ST!!

Corey
Nice meeting you today at Mike Bruno’s. Good video and very informative
Hey, man! Likewise!
Second. Praise God.
Sounds sweet. I wish i'd bought that bike.
I think i know how ya feel, enjoy your videos , hang in there brother man.
Thanks, man.
Congrats...well done !!
Thank you, Donald
Amen
Great video...plus you don't give yourself enough credit....good stuff!
At least you are doing it... I also enjoy wrenching :-)
Thanks for sharing the gospel brother. You are a wonderful witness Tramp. I learn a lot from you working on the bikes, than else I follow. God Bless You
Thank you, Shane
GREAT INTRO MUSIC !! Something from the early 60s
I love it!
Good job!
Thanks! I tried
Preach it brother
Corey, missed you as well. Life has been busy on both sides of the screen. What the heck, it's Summer. That bike really sounded good when you were done with it. Gives us as good a feeling as you must have had. Hope to see you out on the road soon. Thanks for Sharing! 🙃🙃🙂
Hey thanks, Craig! Thank for following.
Wtg! Sounds and looks awesome!
Thanks!
Great stuff
Thanks, Frank!
Love all the bikes you have but that one stands out. It's a little rough around the edges but has that extra cool vibe and now, sound.
Totally agree! That one and the 76 sportster. Thanks, man!
Love the video . I have an 81 FXE I"m running A 49 tooth ON the rear And it work very well . Not killing the bike at 70 miles per hour .
49/23??
@@hdevo80 Yes
have been for years
Love your videos bro. God bless.
Thank you, Troy
Great old school shovel. Love it. The only thing I would change are those 90s style blinkers on the front end. They look completely out of place. But to each their own. Keep making videos. Ride safe and often. 👍🏻
The blinkers will certainly go when I get around to redoing the wiring throughout the bike.
points and solid rods no problems
The ole Shovel sounds really good bro!
Let’s get these ole scooters together one day for a nice ole sounding ride!
Sounds good
Sounds GREAT !!! 👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍🏻
Thanks! I think so too!
I think you’re a fine mechanic. I wouldn’t have had the gumption to press out that gear. Also, I concur that mindset is so important when tackling a mechanical project. If the mind isn’t right don’t touch a wrench, bottom line. Thank you for the awesome video.
Thank you, Cody. It can be mentally challenging sometimes.
good job... l have done couple cams on evo's there all pretty easy.. cheers
Right? About as easy as putting one foot in front of the other.
@@SaddleTrampTV caint be to hard you got it running ... same as what l do when l have to cheers
I’m the same way brother some times I get into those moods i just don’t feel like doing it any and then it’s done I’m ready to go again
Pacific Mike is a great guy he lets me know what I need you just have to give him all the info needed he's forgotten more than I think I may know 😂
I like to watch his stuff. Always something to learn.
Great video .. I woud have used a bit of heat on that gear to make removal and install a bit easier ...
I just thought the Humidity had you down.
Ride on 👍🏻sometimes you just gotta rinse and repeat
You will here ticky tacky when those solids start getting loose in about 500 miles so get use to adjusting them on a regular basis. Enjoy your shovel ride safe.
That's why I ditched them and installed the hydraulics.
hi! i replaсed lifters to s&s - good stuff, but not chaep , 1800 miles on it now
Andre! Thank you! Good to see you, my friend! Hope all is well with you these days.
Potato Potato Potato Potato sounds great 👍
Sound more like chicken soup chicken soup ckicken soup to me. lol
I do know the different pushrods have different thread pitches many more threads per inch so you almost have to know who made the pushrods so you can figure out how many threads per inch.😊 Then you have to know what is the total up-and-down movement of your tapit or hydraulic lifter however you wish to call it. And did knowing those two figures you know you just said it in between so if it's I got a half an inch up and down in the tappet you said it a quarter inch going into the tapping that's about as much as I know. I've always liked to keep the original non-adjustable pushrods if all possible cuz I have been bent the adjustable ones
Timely video. I’m replacing the cam on my 1970 Shovel. I’ve seen some pointers. How are you adjusting the gap on your cam? I didn’t see what size spacer you used. I think there supposed to be 40thousands between end on cam and cam chest cover. The gasket leaves some space too. Thanks for posting.
I always check the end play of the the cam 9 out of 10 times it needs a different shim so its not walking in and out or to tight
Good practice
My 94 evo road king just had a cam problem. Did a cam, lifter and push rod replacement. I did not use the old gear. Hope not swapping the gear does not cause a problem. It has had work on the cam chest done before. Maybe not a problem?
I need to go over my push rod adjustment again 😢
If you don't hear a wining noise or a clacking noise, then you're good.
You are a mechanic and definitely a better mechanic than me. I would not attempt to do the work you do.
Thank you, Darren
It's good to hear from you. In the car world you put new lifters in with a new cam. At the very least new rollers and bearings may have been prudent. Just sayin' Later my friend.
Sound like I've done something right. Thanks, Everett
@@SaddleTrampTV No right or wrong. Your bike you do what you want. I just enjoy watching you learn. That feeling you get when a project works out. Priceless.
Love your channel. Where can I get one of those cross patches that you have on your vest? Not many riders out there displaying the faith. Keep it up!
A good brother gave that to me a while back.
Amen 🙏🏍️😎👍👍
It's alive, it's alive! Fired right up like a Honda. 😄
Maybe what you should say is don't try this at home. I'm a professional back yard wrencher.
Lol... Yeah I guess so!
Hope you checked your cam end play!!
All good!
Good vid... Just speculation on cause of the side to side play in adjustment = MIGHT be wear in lifters / lifter block...Seems like it is sorted out .. old saying = "If it ain't broke don't fix it" comes to mind ....Guess a test ride once it stops raining there will give you the complete answer...No noise that was there previously is a good indicator...>> You "dig deep" into your motorcycles with successful results for someone that claims to not be a pro mechanic...LOL!
Your community is amazing. I'm scrolling through the comments and everyone is being cool. Blessings come in many ways i recon. Hope to see you soon my friend.
And you're part of it.
Did you check the cam endplay What was the the endplay
It was doable. Can't quite recall though the number.
It’s Back And it’s Alive. Do you know if Scooters carry’s shirt’s in a 4X ?.
No clue. They might.
1st because it hot as hell in Tx😢
Freezin in NC only 76*
Hotter in Arizona sweating balls.
@@FlipandTheBlueMule that is perfect weather.
Florida is too hot.
Here too!
Which cam did you use on this rebuild?
Andrews H Grind
I can't remember for sure, but will dry lifters It requires more flats than what you did.
Not sure
That's my idea of church.
What cam are you going with, I would say the anderws n1 cam is the best cam you can run in a stock late model shovel .tell us what cam you went with .
Stock dimension H Grind
Oh ,at the time Harley was try to figure out emissions. So thre stock cam didn't let the motor breathe, the Andrew's n1 cam is what the 80inch shovelhead should have come with in the first place.
With a single fire ignition and a s&s carb and to
And torque cones in the Drag pipes and the bike will run like you never imagined
Your bike secondary (final drive) ratio 48/23? Not good?? I try my shovelhead 51/24
It's not a happy motor when riding 2 up. Perfect with just me though.
Hey Tramp what's next. A flat head 74 or 80
No other bikes in the future. Got too many already.
Can I use hollow pushrods with solid lifters ..on my 1980 FLH 😁
Don't know. I've never tried it.
@@SaddleTrampTV tx for responding ✌️
Faith in GOD and the rubber side down.
Bummer,,,, get it all good to go an mother nature has to, as they say😂😂😂,, rain on the parade. I usually prefer to take my, 03 anniversary heritage springer.
Seems to be my life story
I can’t shoot install videos. I just want to ride them! I just want to get them fixed and on the road. I’m not entertaining enough as Professional Monkey lol.
Does Scooters have Scooters shirts yet?
They did at one time. Not sure if they still do.
