- Elaine Ayala’s conversation with San Antonio native Jesse Borrego covered so many topics, it had to be split in two. They begin with the role Borrego is probably best known for: Cruzito in the cult classic “Blood In, Blood Out.” It’s a movie that fans clung to on old VHS tapes and DVDs. But this May, the Vato Locos began streaming on Hulu, and new generations are seeing it for the first time. It’s only a small part of Borrego’s storied career, which includes acting credits in more than 40 movies and 30 TV shows. He’s also an activist - #vatoslocosvote - mentor and musician, but you’ll hear more about that in part two, dropping June 10.

I saw it in theaters at 11 years old with my mom and grandma, in Phoenix, AZ. We were the only people in there, lol. Some of those scenes haunted me, especially the Montana scene, but I loved it. Then later, it was a cult hit with my class, on VHS. We'd do quotes from it, and tell people about it, and passed it around. It was always a hit movie without being a hit movie. To this day I see kids wearing t-shirts, and see stickers around... it's a bonafide latino classic, a hood classic. Taylor Hackford did it right. Much respect to him.
He is the perfect person to represent San Antonio. Hope to meet him one day, shake his hand and thank him.
He plays at the Harlandale High School Alumni basketball tournament every year. This year is on July 12- July 14.
