Man these do sound great. After hearing all the “you need to record drums in a nice room” advice, I almost bailed out of trying to record my kit. Thanks for the confidence booster.
Moving blankets, fitted with ringlets and hung from a ceiling will cheaply improve any room acoustics. Just make sure to leave a small space (2-4 inches) between the walls and blankets. Don't let the blankets touch the walls.
You can start off with a few blankets, not getting what you hoped for acoustically, then add more blankets. You shouldn't have to cover every wall completely. Space between blankets is okay.
Peter McKinnon's opening music! hahaha dope!
Yes! I was hoping someone would notice. Long-time Peter McKinnon fan here.
Dude, I immediately noticed! hehehe keep up the great work, love the videos (top-notch quality). Glad to hear that dude, it shows in your videos - Peter McKinnon would be proud! hehehe now to insert them B-Roll clips (kidding).
Oh my days!! Took me ages to work out what that was!!! Knew I recognised it from somewhere!! Great video man!
Exactly!
SO FUNNY just watched the latest clip of him and than switshed to this :D
Thanks for being on human level and showing us what equipment we need and how it's done!! Cheers!
How can you not like a well spoken thorough tutorial that explains everything in complete detail. The man is a beast!
I know this video has been out for a while, but thank you for making it. Im a long time drummer but don't have that much recording/ mixing experience. I'll definitely use the info you shared here.
Your drums are some of the best I have heard on YT. Great playing too!
Dude I am blown away how great your drums sound just by using a kick mic and overhead and they are not really expensive gear, I like your mixing technique nothing to fancy just dropping stuff hear and there and its not to much, mad props dude!
Great vid man, so many folks (including myself) need to see how approachable this subject is. Love it!
The video I've been looking for. Thanks man!
Always such nice groove and sound. Enjoyed it!
Wow! Amazing results with only two mics in a non-treated room... I will definitely apply these tips when I'm recording at home. Thanks a lot man
this is actually one of the best lesson 1 in recording drums I've seen. Even though I've been spending many years in the studio, I still refer to this video for first steps.. saves me time not having to do it myself ;-).. thanks
This was exactly what I need to hear and see. Following your advice to start uploading my own drum videos.Thank you.
Such a rad video! Keep up the great work, Jeff! 🤘🏼
Man, your mix is great!!
I cannot believe you're getting that full of a sound out of a only two mic setup. Incredible!
You can get a decent sound from one mic, but probably not in that room.
Me too!
Hey Jeff no problem. One day I would like to set up a room and record like this. I love how you just put it all out there for us to see how you do it. Thank you for that. 👍👍
Hey Jeff, love this video. I just got a Gear4Music SubZero 8 mic pack, that also came with the appropriate stands and cables all for under £300. At the same time I got a Beringher multi channel interface, also for under £300. I’ve used all the mics into logic just like you have and you have managed to get a much better sound, I have similar limitations in terms of sound too. This video has inspired me to step back, think about mic placement and start again to get a fuller, warmer, more natural drum sound that retains punch, wish me luck haha!
First time I've seen 17" hats. Thanks for listing the entire set up! Very helpful.
Nice!! Thanks dude for all that info. Cheers from Argentina!
Really enjoyed you showing the workflow and what you did. Definitely going to check out the tape plug in!
I can't get over that OH, its a 99 dollar mic can't believe your getting the sound your getting , BEFORE the plugins, crazy!
Great video. One thing I learned from a fantastic engineer years ago was to use two mics on ported kick drum. One in the port and one against the outer reso head. He mixed both sounds and the kick sound was full and super dynamic. I share this with anyone.
Dude, thank you so much for this! I'm trying to do the same exact thing with two mics and this is the only video that is doing the same!
Thanks for this, Jeff!!
Very good recording and playing MR. i really love your work!!!!!!!!
wow..great sound ..thanks for sharing
Good stuff, Jeff! Very educational. Fantastic layout of the video and I'm sure it's very helpful to many!
I absolutely love the way you shot it. Crisp looking video!
Thanks for checking it out Max! I hope your studio construction is continuing to go smoothly.
I can’t say how thankful Iam for you putting up this information thanks brotha
Awesome stuff Jeff! Cool to get an insight into your methods. Looking forward to trying some of these tips out!
Thanks Harry!
Jeff this is a brilliant video. I think your words are very wise and I wish more videos on YT were this good. Thanks for posting!
So impressive you got that snare sounding sounding so big without any close mic!
Fantastic video dude thanks for this
Oh let do ride groove 0:44 naaahhh! Maybe next video
Damn. Right when I was wondering what I need to record and take my channel to the next level, this shows up in my recommended. THANK YOU!!! Things are gonna change around here real soon!! :)
the analog part you done is amazing! So realistic !
Thanks Jeff for this videos and info!
Im from spain and ohhh men, this is the best channel of drums!
Congrats friend🫡
Sounds great man! Also helps that you have great sounding drums already and a great groove.
Just discovered your channel. GREAT content, fills, etc. This video is also superb. AT2020 as a single overhead, and the kick mic. Perfect-sounding kit, with headphones or gaming speakers which is usually how I listen to UA-cam videos.... kit sounds phenomenal, cymbals (of course... and I fully agree cymbals are the most important part of the overall sound). Flawless, man.
Great video! So simple and so good
Good stuff. Thanks!
This is pretty informative. I think it's great that you're able to get such a great sound with a pretty budget interface and affordable mics. Additionally, I've been playing drums for a very long time but my focus has always been keys and brass. Recently I've heard how cheesy the cymbals sound during performances and the fact that you mentioned acquiring higher quality cymbals really drove home that fact for me.
That was a really good instructive video… appreciate it man!
Keep up the good work!!!
I really liked this video, Jeff! I’m planning on getting some kind of studio set up happening along with video, and this was helpful! Thank you!
Great video, thanks for doing such a good job at explaining and sharing how to record drums
Thanks Wade!
Great video, love you drumming style and your teaching style.
MAN, that Epidemicsound tip was a game change to me. I was totally looking for something like that to start recording some drums on my own! Really, can't thank you enough!!!!
It’s perfect right?! I’m gonna get busy using their stuff as well.
Thanks for a really good & informative video Jeff! it sounds great and you really play good as well!
Your welcome Lennart! Thanks for checking it out!
Thanks Jeff.really enjoyed this .You couldnt have said it any better in regard to the feel of the drummer is always number 1.It's so easily overlooked.I'm a 66yr.old .lifelong drummer who finally wants to record my own music. Thanks for all the helpful tips.I'll be referring back to this one because you made it SIMPLE.
I hope this helps to illustrate how it doesn't take a ton of expensive gear to get decent quality drum recordings. If you'd like to take these concepts further, you can book a one-on-one online lesson with me here: jeffrandalldrumming.com
Thank you for this, it's really helpful, good job!.
My God! I had to back up the video to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating when you said you only had two microphones on that blow mind drum recording!
I wouldn’t get rid of that storage facility, it’s like the holy Grail of great sound quality for some reason.
Very good quality recording and very nice playing ...groovy ...I like it very much thank you
Thanks for this!, really made pricing/funding mics easy.
great!!! thanks for sharing !!
This was incredibly useful. Thank you 😊
Fantastic! I've been looking for a simple way to record my drums. I already have those exact headphones lol..
Wtf i'm really amazed of what you acheived in that room with only two mics. Great video man!
that groove is insane brotha
Thank you so much for the info Bro.
Bro this is actually a professional mix in my opinion
Very clear and helpful, thank you!
Great Vid Jeff...Cheers Mate!
Very nice. Great job. Well done.👍
thanks a lot Jeff, really helpful guide, great drumming and sound ! :-)
Super simple and helpful! Really makes me want to get a channel cracking
Thanks for the tips. That saturation works for well!!
We are on a similar path my friend.
I just found you tonight. Can’t wait to re watch your video. A mighty big thank you!
Kg
Thank you! The sound going into the mic is far more important than anything else in the chain. How to get a great recorded drum sound: 1. Practice your drumming, a lot 2. Get a really nice kit & cymbals. 3. Spend as much time as you need tuning & figuring out any dampening and eliminating all the weird buzzes and resonance. Spend hours on it before hitting record if you have to. You got a basic but super usable and realistic drum sound with two entry level mics. Nice work.
This is gold man! Digging your sound (both in the feel- and the mix-kinda way ;) ) keep it up! Love to see some more Steve Jordan breakdowns like your last one. Easily my fav groove drummer 🔥
Thanks so much Jonas! I have more groove lessons coming for sure. :)
I'm amazed they sound that great in that storage unit (you're an excellent player as well). I thought I was the only one to be so limited that I had to use a damn storage unit for playing drums. Unfortunately, I had a problem with people who would go there to hang out and complain about the noise (who hangs out in a storage unit!, besides me! playing drums!). Anyway, I will find another one and bring my macbook pro and a couple mics. This video is an inspiring starting point. Glad I found ya.
Dude, your drums sound amazing!
Thanks Jace!
Love this, well explained!
Thanks Rob!
Great stuff! Thank you for this.
Thanks J
Great video! This is super helpful. Subscribed!
really helpful, killer sounds for 2 mics, cheers jeff
Amazing video Jeff!. You explained it so easy to understand like a kindergarten teacher.. more videos!
That was seriously useful, thank you very much...
Definitely enjoyed the video man!! helped me understand a few things.
Awesome! Glad it helped yah Josiah.
Thank you, Jeff, for this video. For a drummer on a budget, and without any experience with miking drums, It's loaded with answers I've been seeking. In fact, your work goes far beyond that - it was such a smoothly composed production, professional in every way, that it's inspiring me to take the leap into recording AND video presentation. Hat's off to you! I'll be checking out all your videos.
I really love this and got some inspiration on what I want my home studio set up to be for drums! I will say listening to the whole mix of the song you were playing on, I think the drums could've definitely been brought up in the mix a few db but otherwise it sounded really good! Good job!
Thanks Jeff, really helpful 👍
Mate you should get in contact with Graham from The Recording Revolution (if you haven't already), you'd be perfect for an interview on his channel. Cheers for a great video!
I follow Graham’s channel! Love his stuff. Thanks for the suggestion!
Yeah I thought so, I'm sure he'd love your content
Yeah kind of the same vibe going on
To be honest i think the room / storage space adds to the recording a bit. I have been recording for drums for 10 years now and i can say when i first started i was recording in a small airplane hanger and i was new to recording, and i was getting great sounds . Im getting ready to go back to acoustic drums from an electric set and I have to say this inspired me to come at it from a more simplistic approach . Thank you for this perfect timing
thanks dude🔥
Superb ! What a great drum sound from only two mics, you could definitely teach a thing or two to so called trained sound engineers. Because of the social distancing/lockdown I've had an engineer remotely mixing a track I originally recorded back in October for an artist, this guy managed to make me sound like a machine by using samples on my snares and kick. I wasn't pleased to say the least, numerous instructional emails and 5 mixes later I finally sound like me!! Point is some engineers over complicate things, what you've done here a perfect example of considered mixing !!
This video helped me a lot! Installing softube was kind of a pain because all the licence activation stuff but I am using almost the same configuration as you with logic and my drums definitely sound better now :3
You Rock Dude!!! Cheer from Venezuela.
Cheers!
I bought this mic! Thanks for the suggestion, Jeff!!
I love your vids Jeff..
Great job on this video dude! I enjoyed it. And your hats sound goooooood and washy. Must be because they are two crashes! I dig it.
Great video man and great drum recordings that awesome that you can get a great drum recording in there that shows that your doing a great job keep making great music man and keep recording drums keep it up
Just came across this video for drums very inspirational and insightful! 👌
Thanks very much!
Wow. This was suuuper informative! Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
Dang, these drums sound pretty killer in that storage unit, straight off the mics! And of course the processed track sounds incredible. Really impressive.
Thanks Scott!
Amazing tips! Very interesting mixing software
This guy should have far more subscribers ! Ok there are lots of videos out there on a more complicated professional level, but for learners with limited budget and limited equipment, this has gotta be one of the best tutorials i have seen .. 22 years as a sound engineer and you get a thumbs up from me .. great work and a well delivered video !!
Thanks very much!!
You are welcome my friend @@JeffRandallDrumming
Very nice. The most important thing is making sure the drums sound as good as possible before putting up any microphones.
Excelente... The quality of the source is the raw material for the recording. The execution of the instrument also because you as a musician have not left the context of the beats, of the technique that deserves to be used in that room. And then, the punctual processing. Congratulations. 🎶
Nice work!
I got a lot out of this video! Great stuff, Jeff!
Glad to hear it! Thanks Cameron.
This was extremely helpful! 👍
