To be fair, Gilmer looks like a genius compared to almost every Lions coach after him. Lions fans would kill for a stretch of winning a whole 10 games out of 28 now.

Hans Heyer didn’t qualify for the only f1 race he entered. During the start, he snuck his car out onto the circuit. The officials only realized he was on the track when his gearbox gave up the ghost on lap six. He was disqualified as he brought his car into the pits to retire it. Hans Heyer is the only driver to receive a dnf, a disqualifications, and a dns in one race event.
It's the Lions, that man was smart 🤣 someone literally went into politics to avoid being drafted by that team, that's how you know you're horrible.

This reminds me of the time I worked for East Of Chicago Pizza without knowing it... I turned in an application and was told that the manager would call me in a day or two to set up an interview. I waited, but never got the call. A week after applying, on a Friday evening, I got a phone call from the manager asking me if I was coming to work, as she had me scheduled to be there that night. I told her I had no idea I'd even been given the job and I was unable to be there that night as I was out of town. She told me, "If you're not here within the hour, you're fired!" -- Again, I had never even interviewed, let alone been told I got the job!
A funny little P.S. to this story: That East Of Chicago restaurant went out of business less than a year later! Word around town was that they couldn't find/keep a decent manager... :)

Since it's semi-relevant to this video, here are some Milt Plum fun facts. His 1960 passer rating (110.4) marked an NFL single-season record (min. 125 attempts) all the way until Joe Montana broke it in 1989. No quarterback since he held the record for longer than 10 years (actively, Aaron Rodgers' 2011 season). That same 1960 season, Plum threw 16 TD passes before his first INT, an NFL record which held up until 2013 (Peyton Manning's 20 and Nick Foles' 19).
Additionally, he owns the Browns franchise record for passer rating (min. 250 attempts). Yes, his career passer rating with the Browns is still better than that of Baker Mayfield, despite giving up 60 years of the league's passing progress.
And yet, in his second season with the Lions (1963), he threw 12 interceptions in 77 pass attempts (15.8%). Nobody since (min. 75 pass attempts) has endured a season with a higher INT%. His overall career passer rating dropped from 84.9 to 80.2 just like that. Plum went 12-22-4 from 1963-67 as a starter with the Lions after starting with a 44-19-2 record (Browns/Lions), honestly derailing what could've been a Hall of Fame career.
I'm sure this only exacerbates the misery of Lions football post-Bobby Layne.
Here's my 39.6 cents' worth: Misinterpretation/miscommunication. Gilmer said Gibbs' chances of making the team were slim; the team was going to try and get rid of him. Gilmer said that literally and meant to light a fire under Gibbs; didn't outright kick him off the team then and there. Gibbs took it figuratively as a prod meaning you're off the team.
That doesn't quite match the newspaper clip of Gilmer's account. The single sentence doesn't say anything about trying to motivate Gibbs, or that Gibbs had *any* chance of making the team. It simply says that Gilmer would have tried to place Gibbs with another team. My guess is that Gilmer had zero intentions for Gibbs to play for the Lions, and was indeed quite blunt in conveying that to Gibbs, but maybe figured he could still get something out of trading Gibbs (either not mentioning it at the time, or not stressing it enough while telling the guy just how much he wasn't wanted).
Even so, you would think he would give his 110 % or whatever so he can get a good recommendation for whatever team may be interested in picking him up.

Players quitting in the middle of games is going to be yet another "new normal" we keep hearing about and are expected to accept and like without question.

My goodness, the Detroit Lions have had so much happen to them since their last championship in '57. This just adds to the craziness.
To add to this, all of American Express' credit/debit/charge cards they have issued have come more recently than the Lions' last title. They won in December 1957, and on October 1, 1958, AmEx got into the credit card business. Wow.

It's Detroit, Detroit Lions. They find ways to screw things up that no one else could ever imagine.
I'm not a superstitious man, but I swear the curse of Bobby Lane is real. Detroit has never achieved anything significant since the 1957 season, and it is all because they traded away Bobby Lane.
I'm not sure it's so much a curse as it was just Bobby Lane making a bold prediction. Lane just knew the Lions were doomed.

the defense was allowed to play defense in the 1960's, transport aaron rodgers to the 1960's and he's lucky to have 2500 yards and 20 touchdowns in 14 games, running quarterbacks like lamar jackson would be lucky to make it past week 5

It seems like both Gilmer and Gibbs were at fault here. Gilmer, as you said, needed to make it more clear that Gibbs was being released and do so immediately. Gibbs, for his part, should have taken advantage of the ambiguity and still show up for the Lions, knowing he was auditioning for other teams to be their quarterback.

In preseason 2002 RB Jason Brookins for the Packers was summoned to the coach's office. So he just packed up all his shit and drove off assuming that meant he was cut. Turns out they had just wanted to make some adjustments to his playbook. The two sides never reconciled and he was cut officially two days later.

Well according to that article; the coach did say he was gonna try to place him on another team. So for what that’s worth. But on the other hand. I’ve seen Mike Shanahan (or how ever you spell it) keep telling James Davis to just keep working and so on. But in reality he was keeping him around as cannon fodder. And coaches do this.
Harry Gilmer definitely sounds like a guy who would call a young person lazy and ungrateful when they ask to be paid a fair wage just so they can afford to live!

As for Gibbs, with that height and his ability to improve, he should’ve been put to studying under Plum as he was better than the 4th rounder from Vanderbilt.
Several years working with Plum just might have produced an excellent qb for the lions heading into the 70’s

Harry Gilmer went on to have a long career coaching in the NFL, after his stint with Detroit, mostly as a QB coach. He coached until 1982. George Wilson, who went on to coach the expansion Dolphins, had his own son as back up to Rick Norton in Miami. Tough break for Sonny Gibbs in the NFL.
John McKay had his own undersized wr/son who played for him at usc play for him in expansion bucs early years.

As insane as today's world is, I'm legit shocked that this kind of thing isn't happening on a regular basis in every workplace.
I think Gibbs was in the wrong. The coach said he wasn't going to make the team. Not that he was immediately being cut. Dont think it was the case that the coach was trying to motivate him, but maybe??? But in any event he wasn't cut, he was told to be expected to be cut before the season. So Gibbs walked away while still on the team. That's quitting in my book.
