- In 1999, CBS Sports, needing to spice up their pregame show, The NFL Today, decided to hire former Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons head coach Jerry Glanville to work alongside Jim Nantz, Randy Cross, and Craig James. The only problem? Glanville was still under contract with FOX Sports, and neither CBS nor FOX knew the terms of Glanville's contract with the network, and knew who he truly worked for. This is the story behind the bizarre hiring controversy.

I remember this controversy well. You did a fantastic job laying this story out--Another phenomenal video..... On a different note, your channel is amazing and it's been an incredible 2021 for Jaguargator9 videos for all of us. I can't find a time stamp, but one of my favorite NFL Films sound bites is when Marty Schottenheimer said (and I am paraphrasing from memory) "Take your blitz and shove it up your ass Jerry Glanville!" after what I can only assume was a big play and/or TD play by his Browns.
Glanville was the architect behind the Grits Blitz - while inspired the Bears "46 defense".
Yeah, unfortunately, they had even, less, offense to go, with, it, than, the Bears did, and, he, was, somehow, even, less, likeable, than, Mike Ditka, odd.

Man I love this channel. Always teaches me something I didn’t know before.
On a related note, what ended up Verne Lundquist's dismissal from ABC: He called a regional college basketball game on CBS in 82 (ABC didn't have college hoops til a few years later) that was only supposed to go to like two or three markets. Except the lead game ended early, so Verne's game became a national game. Oops.
Fortunately CBS did right by him instead of leaving him hanging and he was there until a few years ago (still does Masters and PGA, called Tiger and Phil's 18th)
Speaking of Verne Lundquist: the main thing that ABC used him for during his time there was a sideline reporter for their North American Soccer League coverage from 1979-1981 though he was in the booth for the 1981 Soccer Bowl (ABC's final NASL telecast) due to Jim McKay the regular PBP guy covering a golf tournament for ABC that weekend.
This is a great video to end the year. One of the great things that came out of 2021 was finding this channel and always look forward to Wednesday night's for Trivia nights when ever I can make them. Looking forward to another year of great videos for 2022. Happy New Year.
One of the big perks of going to CBS for Glanville, besides that he didn’t have to travel and got a pay raise, was that he got to announce NASCAR Truck races and also sometimes race in them as an in-race reporter. Glanville is among the most charismatic characters ever in sports
See the MIS rain piece with the CBS crew...wait....he raced pos 19905? I thought his career ended after that wreck in 95-96, oddly enough. He never got much TV time on ESPN, amusingly enough and I don't recall him having many memorable moments in the booth for CBS calling truck races with that crew either.
On that note...Glanville was outshone with...the Niners kicker...who was good with his right foot in a race car too. To be fair to Glanville, he wasn't the worst in he then SuperTruck field. He was good, solid, not awesome.
@@jacekatalakis8316 haha Mike Cofer? He was a better driver than he was a kicker, and he wasn’t a very good driver. Dude missed an 18 yard field goal in the 1988 Super Bowl, and then missed a 19 yard extra point in the 1989 Super Bowl, also missed a big kick in the 1992 season opener, after that he quit and became a mediocre Truck series driver lol

So who was a better driver, Kofer or Glanville? It' s said that Glanville started off in racing (thanks TNN for that) but I'm not sure if that's completely accurate or not. It's said Glanville ran over 100 local tracks. I mean, I did spy a top 10 in late 90s/early 2000s ARCA oddly enough. Which makes me wonder, did Kofer and Glanville ever share a NASCAR track in a race I wonder?

@@TheLocalLt Glanville had a best of sixth in ARCA competition, and apparently a 15th in Trucks. Interestingly his then Busch series car was initially sponsored by the Falcons though. Never knew he had his own team then drove for Norm Benning, though
During this controversy, Jerry Glanville had another job: During the NFL preseason, he was hired by Boston's WCVB to work as color analyst on the station's telecasts of preseason New England Patriots games.
I don't think that would have posed a problem for any network, as many network NFL analysts who don't have any network preseason games get to do preseason games for local stations.
Dick Stockton did Redskins pre-season for many years in the 80's and 90's. Usually teamed with Theismann or Riggo.

Chris Myers has been the Buccaneers' preseason TV play-by-play announcer since the early 2000s. He worked with Ron Jaworski for a few years and currently works on that package with Rondé Barber.
To be fair, Brett Favre said he understood why the Falcons traded him to the Packers--it was under Mike Holmgren that he developed into a good QB, IMO...
Everyone knew that Glanville was a good coach and good analyst. He also said “exactly what he thought.” Higher ups don’t like that kind of unpredictable.
They, like, it even, less, when the individual has accomplished, nothing, Bill Parcells, won, two, SBs, and, thus, would get away, with, much, more.
To me, Jerry was.... ok. He just about justified his place on the commentary staff, but who's staff? Warren Moon said the way to keep Jerry sweet was to do what he asked, keep smiling, and not be scared to put your own opinion in. "Your work is mine, your opinion is your own, and I"d like to hear it." as Warren put it about Jerry.

Glanville was famous for leaving tickets at the will call window for Elvis Presley before all of his games. No word on whether these tickets were ever claimed.
They, "might," have if he'd still been coaching the Oilers when they, eventually, became the Titans.
Kind of long, but a different perspective . . .
I had the "pleasure" of working with Glanville on two occasions in his racing career. First when I was an ARCA team crew member, then as a race official. The driver I used to work with, after he cut back on driving, prepared and maintained Glanville's race cars. ARCA was/is a racing series that, up until recently, used virtually the same cars as NASCAR, but allowed slightly older models to take advantage of the cars being available after they "timed out" in NASCAR. The series ran about 1/2 their season as Saturday shows with NASCAR. NASCAR used ARCA as a proving ground, rather than let new drivers' inexperience wreck their "stars." Which fit Glanville's talents(?) perfectly.
The man walked around the place as if he owned it. You could never find him for meetings, requested visits by the ARCA brass (but wanted them available at any time HE wanted to speak with them.), AND media pictures, surprisingly enough. On his first go-around in the series, he refused to wear the requested sponsor's hat for pictures. He HAD to wear his cowboy hat. The second stint, THAT requirement was long gone. He insisted on NOT wearing ANY hats for media pictures. To say the guy was a little different would, to me, be an understatement.
Harlan and Granville were arguably the best of Fox’s OG broadcast teams (other than Summerall and Madden, of course)

I remember him being on Inside the NFL for so many years, he seemed to have a good time on that show.
We live in a climate where we hold athletes to a higher standard, when it comes to a code of conduct more so than the coaches. Jerry Glanville is a perfect example of this.

There was one person who was the host of 3 shows on the (then) 3 networks.
Dick Clark had CBS Weekday AM with $25000 Pyramid, ABC Saturday Morning with American Bandstand, and NBC prime time with the bloopers show with Ed McMahon.
There's no official rule (except the rule that you can't be at two places at once in reality, but with satellites, that physical issue could be overcome.) that says only one network at a time
If there was some he he could have "telebilocated" he could appear in person on one network, and take a taxi to the other affiliate and appear there, as shown by the Dick Clark tri-network example.

I don't know what year it was but Glanville had a coughing fit one Sunday during a CBS pregame show and walked off the set right through Jim Nantz's camera shot. The look on Nantz's face was priceless. Unfortunantly in the pre youtube days.
Glanville was coaching in the Spring League earlier in 2021.

This makes the most sense in how a controversy probably occurred. He probably didn't sign a contract and did cash a check and Fox ultimately figured its not worth the litigation to keep someone who wanted to leave.
No. Plenty people cash checks without contracts and are free to move at will.
Glanville had one of the great lines of any color commentator in history while at Fox...during a Packers game, Green Bay was called for a penalty. Glanville, without missing a beat, quipped, "That's the Packers...if you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'!"
He almost certainly learned that phrase in NASCAR.

Glanville was good at FOX. He didn't kiss San Fran's butt during 49er broadcasts like all the other announcers did.
He, turned, out, to, be, right, the, Cowboys, were, better, than, them, except, for, 1994, when, they, bought, the, SB, later, the, Packers, were, better, than, them, except, for, 1998, when, the, officials, screwed, up, not, to, mention, that, Steve, Young's, body, turned, into, glass, beginning, in, 1995, that, simple.
Here's proof that sometimes, even Mother Nature wanted him to shut up. He was in a secondary, pit-side booth with legendary NASCAR broadcaster Ken Squier for CBS at the rain-shortened 2000 Kmart 400 Winston Cup race at Michigan. Well, NASCAR had just called the race, already having moved it over to broadcast partner TNN by this point due to the delayed start pushing it over CBS's allotted broadcast window. Just after returning from a break, the top of the booth they were in caved in due to the rain that had collected on top of it, absolutely soaking Ken and Jerry. The shirt-mounted mini-microphones they wore were ruined, and they had to borrow their pit road guys' backup mics to conduct their interviews until CBS pulled the plug on the broadcast. Jerry would go on to work his final race with The Big Eye with Alabama CFB radio man Eli Gold a week later at the Busch Series race in Milwaukee. He'd run ARCA on and off until '03, and then he decided to ride off into the sunset. He may not have accomplished all that much as a coach, or a driver, and may have ran his mouth stupidly at times, but he'll always be legendary to me.
Wasn't that the one where Ken/JG were standing under umbrellas? Or am I thinking of Mike Joy at another rain shortened race in the pits? I swear that's the one notable moment Glanville had in NASCAR...well, aside from his wreck. I don't remember him in ARCA at all. Eli Gold had a great, great career for TNN however. If that race is on UA-cam I'll pull it up, curious how those two got along since Eli was more often paired with Buddy Baker and those two were a fun team. You add Jerry to the booth and I'm not sure he and Eli would get along
I think Jerry Glanville was (and likely still is) pretty cool & fun, along with being an interesting coach. Okay, he wasn't a championship-level coach, but his teams were never boring, and Glanville is the furthest thing from boring.
Back to that crummy 1998 CBS studio show again, he he; yeah, as long as I have a memory, I'll never forget that tepid start.

I can’t believe that Fox would fight for Glanville at all, because I was fed a lot (and I mean A LOT) of Glanville’s announcing team while going to college in Reno (as he seemingly did every 49ers game involving divisional foes) in the late ‘90s, and he was not good.
Yeah, his legacy in the, NFL, is, botching the Brett Favre situation, and, "Not, For, Long," still, he'll always be a legend in Green Bay, unquestionably.
I always hated his guts. Obnoxious, arrogant, abrasive. I was SO disappointed when my hometown Falcons brought him in as HC. As pointed out here, he SPECTACULARLY botched the Favre situation (and big time kudos to Brett for owning his part in it). Falcons could have had Favre all those years instead of dog abuser Vick, erratic George, mediocre Chandler, injury risk Miller, hopeless Harrington. 🙄🙄🙄

Jerry Glanville is the ONLY former NFL Head Coach I KNOW of that could work for 2 TV networks SIMULTANEOUSLY. John Madden COULD have pulled it off but HE was an HONEST guy. And UNLIKE Glanville John Madden's teams RATED WAY ABOVE 39.6. Jerry Glanville's teams should have just SPIKED the football into the ground on EVERY single OFFENSIVE play!!!!!
Jerry G. was one of the funniest fiqures in the NFL.
Jerry Glanville was quite the character as he had a really fun personality and was a pretty good coach too. He should've been revered like Madden as I'd take Glanville over some of these cheesy so-called broadcast analysts anyday of the week. Glanville was fun with the Oilers in the 80s and even more fun in the 90s with the Falcons as I wished he had more success down there. It was great when he gave the Falcons their best uniforms to-date with the black jerseys and silver pants looking like the Raiders and they had Deion Sanders and Bad Moon Rison going into the early Georgia Dome era days.
Jerry Glanville tried WAAAYYY too hard to be a wacky, wild, outspoken sports personality. Whereas for people like Charles Barkely and John McEnroe and Deion Sanders, they came across as "natural-outspoken". Glanville came across as "artificial-outspooken". Glanville wanted to be thought of in that same vein as Barkley, McEnroe, and Sanders. But Glanville was so artificial about it, and it was really transparent. He SOOO wanted to be one of the "cool guys", but he just wasn't.
What a coincidence... Glanville didn't know what he was doing either as a coach
I liked it better when fox wasn't involved with the nfl. I liked the AFC on NBC and the NFC on CBS. You were guaranteed 4 Sunday afternoon games (2on each network). Unlike now, where you only get three on Sunday afternoons. Both networks take turns only having one.

I remember Jerry reserving sideline tickets for Elvis Presley he thought Elvis was still alive. He wore all black on a Houston Oilers team that had no black in it's color scheme. It's a shame with a better and more stable coach those teams had a lot of talent and the great Warren Moon. The Atlanta Falcons switched to all black just to get him to come to there team. What a character.
