It was such an inspiring moment for us in Ireland that John visited the old country. Such a boost of self confidence for us that one of our own could become the most powerful man in the world. Might not sound much now but it was a massive deal at the time.

Eisenhower was admired and respected for his military expertise in helping to win WW2, but Kennedy inspired more people with his charm, wit, family, and desire for excellence in public life, despite his secret and numerous extra-marital affairs that disrespected Jackie for years, until she lost her baby Patrick, in early August, after only 2 days of life. After that, John and Jackie grew closer than ever before, but they only had 3 1/2 more months together.

I was born in September of '63 though JFK was killed in November and only after growing up in the USA, I came to admire him. I still consider him one of the greatest (if the greatest POTUS). And although I am Portuguese by birth, I consider myself Irish every St. Patrick's Day! My first and favorite President, I was young in the 60's, I was in my teens when he was assassinated, that was a sad day for the world, watching this brought back memories and tears. R.I.P. Mr. President.
He had an enthusiastic and warm welcome at Love Field and all along the motorcade route, where he and Jackie were cheered by the Dallas citizens. It was only at the end when there were few fans at Dealey Plaza where the plotters found the best place to murder him at that echo chamber confusing people on how many shots were fired. Far more than the 3 officially reported: most credible sources have found evidence of bullet holes in the limo (front windshield), and discounting the ridiculous "magic bullet" that supposedly hit both JFK and Gov. Connally, there were at least 6 to 8 bullets from three places, the last one was the fatal one to his right temple.
This is great footage, but two things are very striking to me: Seeing him come down those same rear steps of Air Force One where he would be carried back up in a coffin so few months later and seeing him in that open air car. He had no fear and loved interacting with people.
He did a lot of interesting and productive things the year he got shot. He visited Ireland his ancestral homeland. I feel that should be cherished in history a lot more.
Immediately before JFK arrived in Ireland he payed a State Visit to Germany in June 1963. Also there he received an enthusiastic welcome by huge friendly crowds, especially that was true when President Kennedy came to West-Berlin, where he toured the western part of the city, including Check Point Charlie, border crossing to the Soviet sector of Berlin, then his world famous speech at the Schöneberg City Hall, telling the whole world " Ich bin ein Berliner- I am a citizen of Berlin ", in conclusion he held a speech at the Free University Auditorium, Berliners just loved him , me included ( in June '63 still being a Berlin high school student). My allegiance to America has remained strong through all these years until today. I am very happy that JFK also received a wonderful, warm and joyous welcome from the Irish , the country of his ancestors.
My dear mother bless her dragged me into a 23 bus from crumlin to park gate street where we seen the president on his way to the phoenix park. I was 7 then and remember it as if it was yesterday. ..I honestly think President Kennedy looked over at me as he was passing by but thats what I thought at the time . Few months later he was Dead and I remember that day just like yesterday as well unfortunately.
Cool , I have a photo of my mother on O Connell st Bridge on the same day . Think she was 17 and was allowed out from boarding school for the day to see him .like yourself it was a day she will never forget and similarly to us down the generations who weren't born but know the stories well .

Having studied history, with all the cynicism and criticism of Kennedy over the years I have come around to the understanding that he was an absolute hero, and his brother too with no doubt. He tried to take "them" out but they got to him first.
My family also had to flee from Thurles Co Tipp in 1850 couldn’t afford the fare to America so as the poorest of the poor it was to Scotland for us..and we still take about JFK over here...🇮🇪

I was born in September of '63 though JFK was killed in November and only after growing up in the USA, I came to admire him. I still consider him one of the greatest (if the greatest POTUS). And although I am Portuguese by birth, I consider myself Irish every St. Patrick's Day! Truly, JFK will always be the finest example of an Irish American - genuine, likeable, family oriented, happy, and best of all, blessed. May God bless Ireland and her people!
He had such natural charm...I think the male Royals tried to emulate him, his walk, the way he held his hand over his jacket when he walked...and his way of reviewing the troops with just the right touch of respectful authority...but none of them can compare to his whole inimitable way...not before or since has there been such a leader of the free world.

I remember this clearly I was at school in Birr . I'm in my 70's now and so are many of the young ones in this video and many left the world too.

My first and favorite President, I was young in the 60's, I was in my teens when he was assassinated, that was a sad day for the world, watching this brought back memories and tears. R.I.P. Mr. President.
Heartbreaking to contrast this warm visit with the coming assassination in Dallas.
He had an enthusiastic and warm welcome at Love Field and all along the motorcade route, where he and Jackie were cheered by the Dallas citizens. It was only at the end when there were few fans at Dealey Plaza where the plotters found the best place to murder him at that echo chamber confusing people on how many shots were fired. Far more than the 3 officially reported: most credible sources have found evidence of bullet holes in the limo (front windshield), and discounting the ridiculous "magic bullet" that supposedly hit both JFK and Gov. Connally, there were at least 6 to 8 bullets from three places, the last one was the fatal one to his right temple.
So very sad..... what this country would've been had he done two terms.

This is great footage, but two things are very striking to me: Seeing him come down those same rear steps of Air Force One where he would be carried back up in a coffin so few months later and seeing him in that open air car. He had no fear and loved interacting with people.
Also the playing of anchors away for a World War II veteran and hero was touching
He did a lot of interesting and productive things the year he got shot. He visited Ireland his ancestral homeland. I feel that should be cherished in history a lot more.

Immediately before JFK arrived in Ireland he payed a State Visit to Germany in June 1963. Also there he received an enthusiastic welcome by huge friendly crowds, especially that was true when President Kennedy came to West-Berlin, where he toured the western part of the city, including Check Point Charlie, border crossing to the Soviet sector of Berlin, then his world famous speech at the Schöneberg City Hall, telling the whole world " Ich bin ein Berliner- I am a citizen of Berlin ", in conclusion he held a speech at the Free University Auditorium, Berliners just loved him , me included ( in June '63 still being a Berlin high school student). My allegiance to America has remained strong through all these years until today. I am very happy that JFK also received a wonderful, warm and joyous welcome from the Irish , the country of his ancestors.
My dear mother bless her dragged me into a 23 bus from crumlin to park gate street where we seen the president on his way to the phoenix park. I was 7 then and remember it as if it was yesterday. ..I honestly think President Kennedy looked over at me as he was passing by but thats what I thought at the time .
Few months later he was Dead and I remember that day just like yesterday as well unfortunately.
Cool , I have a photo of my mother on O Connell st Bridge on the same day . Think she was 17 and was allowed out from boarding school for the day to see him .like yourself it was a day she will never forget and similarly to us down the generations who weren't born but know the stories well .

You have a good name and I guess you are from Cork ..that reason I say that is the photographer at my wedding in Dublin in 1980 his name was Kevin Barry a good friend of my father in law.. Kevin did a video of the wedding on vhs tapes and when I got back from my honeymoon in Yugoslavia was then my father in law bless him accidentally recorded over the video and I never got to see it . I can laugh 😃 now but I can tell you it wasn't funny at the time. Anyway kevin enjoy your day and greetings from a VERY 🔥 hot Kenya.
Having studied history, with all the cynicism and criticism of Kennedy over the years I have come around to the understanding that he was an absolute hero, and his brother too with no doubt. He tried to take "them" out but they got to him first.

My mom was from Connemara in County Galway. Whatever house l visited there was a picture of Jesus, Mary, and JFK. Ireland loved him as their own.
My aunt was like that plus a picture of the pope in the late 1960s and 1970s in Boston Massachusetts. God bless.

Kennedy was welcomed as a returning Irishman. For a guy who’s family has been abroad for over a hundred years, the spirit of the Irishman in his roots never left him.
He looked and felt so at home by this video alone

He did live and pushed through what he said was his crowning achievement in office, from Aug. 5, 1963 signing in Moscow by Sec. of State, Dean Rusk, to ratification on Sep. 24 by the Senate in a lopsided 80-14 vote (14 more than the 2/3rds needed), and it became effective on Oct. 10: the Partial Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty.
I felt this great man's magnetism just watching this film. Not long after he left Ireland, it lost its innocence... when he was assassinated, America lost its innocence. Hopefully we will find that innocence again in the afterlife.

He was revered as much as the Pope by some in Ireland and is still well loved in the home of his ancestors. In less than a year after his historic visit to Ireland John Kennedy would be dead. So sad...
In 1963 the population of Ireland was three million. Judging from the enormous crowds that turned out to see him, prob half of Ireland saw Kennedy pass by in person.

Thank you so much for sharing this. Decided to watch a few minutes of it. Needless to say, I watched it all. In many ways this was the moment when Ireland celebrated our survival, and realized that our people had achieved great things. It could only have happened with JFK though. There has never been a visit like it. He was such an inspiring man. That is why the criminals killed him. It is sad how we have been misled since then. I followed John F. Kennedy from before his time in the Oval Office. My Catholic neighbors in West Tyrone, Ireland, felt proud that an Irish Catholic would soon be President-. That John was Catholic was important to the Irish for, had John been a Protestant Evangelical, things would not have been so important anymore!!
Religion was more important then and I believe he was the first Catholic president at a time when they were shunned . Now adays his religious preference wouldn't make much of a difference . Irish is still Irish no matter which church or mosque you pray in ,if any !
