A good tip for taking gaba or ltheanine is to crack the capsule open and squeez the powder under the tongue and let it dissolve then it will instantly get into your blood stream vs just swallowing a capsule and waiting a few hours for it to take affect. You can instantly feel GABA when it enters your blood stream its like a warming tingling sensation. Then you start to feel balanced after a few minutes try it.. Gaba has a sweet taste so don't worry its not nasty tasting. Swallowing gaba capsules takes waaaay to long for it to take affect vs instant relief under the tongue try it I swear by it.

After trying everything for depression/anxiety for years, I started taking L-Theanine a few weeks ago as a last ditch effort before talking to my doc about more serious pharmaceuticals. Holy crap it actually works! Like I can actually complete tasks without feeling like I'm climbing a mountain. I am way calmer and have a more positive outlook. Some mornings I'm practically buzzing. Currently in the middle of my pre-nursing anatomy & physiology series and really wanted to know how this works in the brain. All the articles I read were, understandably, quite surface level. But this video finally gave me the detail I wanted to be able to scratch that itch. So thank you!
GABA works. I take it daily the past 6 months. immediately it works better than Xanax. I become super calm and relaxed. I used to flip out all the time over every little anxiety issues. Not any more with GABA supplements.
It absolutely does and I agree it’s stronger than my Xanax I take 250mg at nite and 250mg during the day i also take cbd oil and read that can make it cross the BBB easier not sure but I definitely notice a huge difference
Well done. after quitting 30 years of caffeine followed by massive anxiety / withdrawal symptoms i take magenesium glycinate and now starting with L Theanine.... no more anxiety attacks - when i take this combo before bed time
They both work for me but in different ways. L-theanine helps me focus, Gaba genuinely helps me relax, idk if it just me but when I'm on it it's a noticable difference.
@@owlgirl6648 I took L-Theanine with a meal (mixed bean soup and 3 Boiled Eggs) and I was calm within 5min. Usually eating lunch with others gives me anxiety, so I had a way to calibrate its effectiveness.
They only time I would want to be on benzos Is when I get an excuse not to be on jury duty - bec they would not let me ntal illness in court room. So there you go....
I quit Benzodiazephines due to them being very addictive and once you try to get off them, the withdrawals are horrific and I wouldn't want that in my system, in case I'd have to get off them. Getting off Benzos were a horrible experience for me. So I decided to take something more natural for my anxiety/deppression. I chose L-theanine. So far, taking this was excellent for me. No side effects, which is great.
I’m a person that really feels I need Benzos. They will never prescribe them to me as I know i would end up completely addicted. I’m going to try L-Thianine now
From somebody who fucked himself up with too much LSD and Shrooms as a younger fella, I can positively say GABA has been the only thing that helps me sleep. I have got horrible insomnia and anxiety. I would stay up days without sleep. Now I hit the bed and pass out! 750mg GABA each night has done more for me than Benadryl ever could. I know for a fact GABA works.
Amazing supplements, I switch between the two and they both work great! Got me off benzos and helped me quit drinking/doing other drugs. Seriously amazing for anxiety, would highly recommend.
@@Kanne60 I was taking 1 mg of xanax 3 times daily. I started taking GABA and L-Theanine as a reduced the dose to 0.5mg 3 times daily and then slowly to no xanax. It works really well, I suffer from GAD and taking it helps. Today I was having a minor anxiety attack after getting out of the shower, and I took 200mgs of it in pill form. A few minutes later I felt like it never happened.
L-Theanine is amazing. Along with ashwaganda root, GABA, and large doses of magnesium and vitamin B to metabolize it all combat any drowsiness that comes with, helped me get of prescription meds that had severe side effects upon quitting including death. So this video is completely false.
So essentially what happens here is the glutamine turns into glutimate and the glutamate acts as a glutaminatate and that then converts to gaba glutamatamine and then that allows the glutaminatatamine to act as a gaba releasor thus allowing the calming of anxiety

AND you did the hard work. Impressive. So, I have some sleep meds that will remain unmentioned, would you recommend both l-theanine and gaba for backing off the classic b's? Tips? Either way, Im ever so happy for you !
@@eugeniebreida1583 If "classic" b's is referring to something that sounds like "enzos" then from what I understand it basically has the same effect on the brain. I think the b's might be a bit more potent and difficult so idk. My sister had wd's from b's and she said it was hell. The best thing is to taper off over a longer period of time just to be safe. I didn't taper off the brews as I should have because I would have wd's as soon as I would wake up and got tired of it. I just constantly loaded up on gaba and valerian root supps all day long to keep my glutamate brain activity down for about a week until my brain readjusted. It just makes you feel like a zombie and really tired. L-theanine didn't seem to do much after the first couple days of taking it although I'm sure it helped. I think the best thing to do is to cut your dose by half every few weeks or so to be safe. My sister switched to a lower dose extended release clonazepam which really allows the brain to readjust in a safe manner. I was only drinking around a 12 pack of brews and it was bad enough for me to go through that hell of wd's. Opiate wd's can't even kill. Booz and b's are nothing to play around with. I hope you do well and overcome the temptations of the flesh. God bless you!! Btw, it's not me doing it, it's the Good Lord that makes all things possible.
Gaba supplement only works if you have a weak blood-brain barrier that allows it's entry. If you want something that crosses blood-brain barrier and gives you increased Gaba try phenibut.
Added GABA to my nightly sleep concoction, and the first night felt like I was drugged heavily. I haven't been able to sleep without medication for twenty years. Without it I stay up three days at a time. You say GABA doesn't work? Added to a mixture, it knocked me out and I woke up relaxed. Gonna keep taking it, even though it doesn't work.
@HesMade TheDecision I will have to wait till I get home to list everything. I am a bodybuilder and have always been overtrained. That's the reason I don't sleep. I have been so addicted to working out. I'm at the gym right now answering your comment. I will send you the list later. It's a fking cocktail of stuff. I recently just went up to 2 grams of potassium and it too seems to really help the cocktail.
@HesMade TheDecision Yikes, four days is bad. I haven't thought about how much it costs because my sleep is so important to me now. I have been a bodybuilder for thirty years. I have read every single article, watched a million videos and read quite a few medical journals. I have tried a lot of different things and kept was has worked.
@HesMade TheDecision Hey, if you are young and not a psycho bodybuilder, you could ask you doctor for Amitriptyline 75 or 100mg. Take it an hour before bed and you will sleep like a rock. It will take two months before you are not groggy in the morning. But, once your body catches up on sleep, it will not effect you at all except making you sleep. I have been on it for 18 years and am coming off. That alone makes me sleep without anything else. But, I'm 50 and at 60 they won't prescribe it to you. So, I'm coming off. Here is what it takes to make me sleep pretty good, not perfect but enough. 200mg Theanine, 2x Gorilla Dream, 1x Calm Tabs, 5mg of time released melatonin, 500mg garlic, 2 grams of potassium, 700mg magnesium, 2 or 3 grams of dha/epa combo and 17.5mg of Amitriptyline (guesstimate). The GABA is in Gorilla Dream. After it worked by itself, I got the Dream with it in it. But, try the Amitriptyline by itself first. Give it 3 months before you give up on it. Let it do its magic.
Can concur. I take sun-theanine (supposed to be a better version of L-theanine) and it certainly works. I used to be a big rx pill head, so I was wary of an otc supplement. I was shocked at the effects of L-theanine. I recommend trying this for anxiety before getting on anything hard, like benzos.
L-theanine has been helping reduce my anxiety. I take it three times a day with coffee or green tea. Thank you for taking your time in explaining the chemistry for this.
Sun-Theanine is a high quality and very effective form. You can definitely tell a difference when drinking coffee... theanine takes the jittery feeling away from caffeine
This article is really old, but I just want to add that GABA - the calming neurotransmitter - is actually made from glutamate. We need the GAD enzyme to convert it. So maybe that is a reason why some have a reaction to it???
I am totally alarmed at how smart you are!!! You are what all you tubers should strive to be like. In all seriousness Thank you very much for what you do.
I dont sleep very well at all for years now. I heard about L-Theanine 2 days ago and so I bought some at safeways yesterday. 30 - 200 mg tablets for 9 dollars. I took 1 tablet last night at bed time and fell asleep in45 minutes and slept for 8 to 9 hours I woke up 2 times but fell back to sleep no problem. So I am so excited about how well L-Theanine works and I hope it continues to work and if it does will be a answer to my prayers.
Im absolutely impressed on how you explain the effect of Ltheanine and Gaba. Thank a lot. I'll go over with your other videos too. Immediately subscribed to your Channel.
Why GABA doesn't work??? Well, I've read MANY comments saying just the opposite. GABA works wonders, very relaxing, helps with sleep, waking up refreshed, and no tremors.
I think both benzodiazepines and barbiturates are allosteric modulators rather than direct agonists of the GABA receptor. I think even the old 80s favorite qualifiers was an allosteric modulators. Barbs are strong enough to activate the receptor complex, while benzodiazepines need a GABA to be present for the receptor complex to activate.
they first thought GABA wouldn't reach the blood brain barrier but recent studies suggest we were wrong, proving sometimes anecdotal evidence is sufficient to warrant experiments...

There are products now that are Liposomal GABA. The GABA is attached to a fat particle to help it cross the blood brain barrier. I am taking such a product and it has helped reduce stress. I don't have the science to to explain it all but from my experience I see absorption with a Liposomal GABA.
@@pressf4896 I have the same effect from L-Theanine alone with caffeine pills since I dislike coffee. Several years, and its crazy that it still works like day one and with caffeine it really lets you enjoy the energy effect without the jitters or associated annoyances.
It's nice to get some responses from people actually taking this. It took about four days for me to really notice the effects, but it improved my sleep immensely, and cut way way down on my more manic episodes. In this regard I think it improved focus. I felt more relaxed in social situations, and love the way this curbs the nasty side effects of coffee. Namely it gets rid of the jitters, muscle tension, increase in blood pressure rate, etc. It gives you clarity and focus. I can see why they combine it with caffeine. Nice combo. What it doesn't do: I take probably 15 benzodiazepines per year for extreme panic attacks. L-theranine is not a benzodiazepine, and it's not going to curb the extreme anxiety or panic. Depending on how severe your attacks are it may be strong enough though, and getting off benzodiazepines is a very good thing. I think they are wonderful, but I don't like to use them more than two days at most. The withdrawal is horrible, and I would say taking them with L-theranine is even worse as I become extremely lethargic when the benzo wears off. I think one of the reasons L-theranine doesn't work as well as a benzo is it doesn't do anything to control cortisol. That what give you the fight, flight , freeze response. So if you get a queasy stomach, diarrhea, bad muscle tension, etc. over anxiety you will probably still need something else for the extreme stressful situations. Ashwaganda does work on cortisol, but it's pretty mild. I also have read it increases testosterone. The drawback here is testosterone and cortisol are highest in the morning, so I noticed I got very panicked first thing in the morning. L-theranine alone doesn't do this. If anyone has found something other than benzodiazepines to control extreme panic, I love to hear about it. I still have to take the benzos for panic attacks, but this supplement is really wonderful, and overall has little side effects. Most of the other ones I've taken leave me pretty sleepy, or upset my stomach, etc. I do find L-theranine can upset my stomach if I take it on an empty stomach, so try to combine with food.
Beta blockers stop panic dead within 30 mins believe me I have been taking them for years without them I can't go out the house try them there are magic pill
Try taking NAC 1g, cold showers and biggest difference I've noticed and have gotten clients doing it to is vitamin D 10,000iu daily. Reduces anxiety, stress, increases motivation etc. I can keep going on but got about 20 clients on it and seem to do wonders. Keep in mind to take k2 and magnesium for vitamin D to work best. I'm a pt btw
I think it would be very foolish for anybody to start popping supplements, particularly in high amounts, without first consulting with a doctor or a nutritionist. I live in Alaska, so vitamin D3 I think is beneficial, due to our lack of sunlight. Every GP recommends taking some. Before I would ever consider popping 10,000 IU's though, I would have my levels checked. Last thing you want to do is develop toxic levels of this. And high levels of D3 can also lead to hypercalcification. My urologist warned me after I developed kidney stone that I may be taking too much D3, and that's when I was taking 2000 IU's. Bottom line though is you really need to test, and see what your base levels are. Medical doctors have years of training in biochemistry, and even there it's a bit of an experiment. I doubt you'll find any doctor though just making suggestions without doing thorough blood test, listening to what your symptoms are, etc. A plan should be tailored to the individual. When somebody starts suggesting three or four supplements at one time that's a big red flag to me.. Randomly popping pills in the hope that it will improve things is gambling IMO.
Totally not a scientific person here, but.. what happens to all the glutamate and glutamine of the theanine is blocking it.. where does it go? For me, a noob in this area it seems like it would 'clog' or store at where it is blocked.. probably doesn't work this way but I was wondering, what happens to those 2?
Do we built tolerance to it after a while? Or does it work forever? We have to cycle it? I had some good supplements that did wonders (DHEA & Pregnenolone) but stopped working after couple weeks. Same for Boron.
Phenibut is phenylated GABA and works. It’s basically Gaba that can cross the brain barrier. However, it is addicting and will cause withdrawals. It is much much stronger than anything else legal, including theanine
All of this is going on in our bodies and most of us just have no clue at all. But for you and others to know the universe that exists in our bodies is just such a powerful treasure of knowledge and I want to know too the going ons of our bodies.
Polarization (Gaba) and non-polarization (L-Theanine) depolarization, can travel far where as polarization cannot. In simplicity. L-Theanine is photosynthesize/Light where as Gaba is dark weighs down. This is the message being interpreted. Medical vs Natural
L-theanine can cross the blood brain barrier while Gaba does not. However, I am using Quicksilver product with gaba and l-theanine together for an elderly person with schizophrenia, although not regugarly. It is better than using big pharma drugs that can do much harm long term.. However, some people need a longer lasting effect for mentail illness otherwise they person wont eat or drink. It is a challenging situation.
I have a question. There are people addicted to gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid. Taken as GHB and precursor to GABA, glutamate, and glycine crossing blood brain areas. It acts on the GHB receptor agonist at the GABAB receptor. They take it to stop over thinking, to work out, anti anxiety-depression to enjoy life in general,, what can be done for them so that they can have a sustainable method for this? Something that can do the same or almost? Thanks
Why don,t they talk about this in psychiatrie. Very standard to prescribe benzos and SSRI,s . I,m desperate after living 30 years with anxietydisorder. I do take Fevarin a SSRI for ivery long but i only can take a small amount otherwise i feel so crappy in my head and can,t function. I was glad to hear about Gaba but now i hear that it doesn,t pass the bloodbrainbarrier. I,m gonna check this out. Also look into vit B1, I've learned a heap via EO nutrition on UA-cam. I'm mega dosing on benfothiamine and taking L-theanine PLUS neck exercises (Atlas in particular stopped my vertigo and foggy head) I also drink hojicha tea (Japanese tea with lowest caffeine as it's roasted) all of these are making a difference
So how do you help Gaba Receptor Uptake to revitalize - after past use of Benzodiazepines - which inhibit Uptake. To be successful in getting off Benzodiazepines - you got to increase Gaba Uptake regeneration - surely - there must be a simpler way to correct this imbalance that antagonizes normal Gaba function? Save the world - more that you can be aware, today!
Yes, however between 200-400mg, taking more than that has been shown to do nothing for almost everyone. Its just wasted product. You may want to keep taking it, as part of a 'stack', and do some research on other additions/
I take l-theanine mints from neurogum. Good quality control it is cold pressed and also amazing form factor. With it being a mint it provides more utility instead of having to take capsules during a function I can just look like I'm taking normal mints but in actuality I am managing anxiety
I’ve had the opposite experience. It took about 2 months but I did notice an improvement with GABA. Felt like my brain was calmer. On the other hand, I’ve tried Twice to take L Theanine, I started slow with 1/4 pill because I’m sensitive to caffeine, on the 5th day I took 1/2 and was so buzzed I couldn’t sleep and I felt an increase in anxiety. Same thing happened when I tried again several months later. By the 5th day I couldn’t sleep and felt very anxious. Was shivery and couldn’t breathe well. Tiny bit light-headed. I really wanted it to work because it’s supposed to be the best supplement for anxiety but not for me. Also tried ashwaganda, but it caused a slight allergic reaction and I spent the whole night itching.
There are always people who have the opposite effect of the 'average' person. Did you try L-T from a reputable place like NOW? If so, then you'll have to keep looking, unless its somehow interacting with some other medication or supplement you are taking.
I tried chewable l-theonine (half dose, so 100mg) and had the same reaction. And incidentally I am also sensitive to caffeine, I wonder if that has something to do with it
ive always wondered what this stuff actually DID in the brain .. and to find out that its actually a receptor blocker, for glutamate nonetheless... is VERY surprising. i have always been "surprised you can feel the effects".. but now knowing the mechanism of action, im surprised this isnt FAR more powerful. Easily the best OTC out there, right up there with NAC
How much L-theanine to have a significant amount of GABA release as much as 0.5mg of Xanax for example. I get anxious and depressed but taking 0.5mg Xanax saved my life. I’m able to think clearly and I never abuse it like these new age kids. Just a little makes me calm down and realize how beautiful life truly is and how it’s easier to look at things objectively rather than basing my outlook on my body’s rush of cortisol during an anxiety episode. I don’t wanna get hooked on Xanax so I want an alternative to be able to feel this happy. I feel like I’ve been deprived of GABA for years.

I’m going through hell trying to heal - taking p5p and l theanine, just crazy sick with cns issues - like the engine is revving but the brakes are on - the neurological symptoms, body stuck in stress response and blurred vision etc are through the roof - I can’t calm, not 1% in 15 months now and bedridden but so awake.. what can be successfully tried that helps raise gaba? I had neurotransmitter tests which came back as low gaba, v low glycine, suspected b6 issues (I have a worsening scaly rash over my chest and back), and super high inflammatory markers, super high 3-hydroxykynrenine - neuro inflammation and no way to put the brakes on (gaba etc). My dopamine & serotonin levels ok.. I’m not depressed, just super super sick with 50+ symptoms - the brain/vision ones the absolute worst. Can you suggest what may help, pls 🙏🏼..

Been taking l theanine for about 2 days now, calms me down and changes my mood to better every time! I take about 200mg every day when I feel the anxiety come on
Save yourself the hassle, and just take it every morning. No cites report an RDA limit needed, nor long term issues. Taking more than 200-300mg a serving seems to have no better effect nor issues.
I really really urge you to get off those klonopins for sleep. I did the same thing for about a year, and it completely destabilized my brain now. I lost my ability to sleep, and it's only coming back now slowly after months and months of sleepless withdrawal. I suggest you look for a non-benzo remedy for sleep. benzos are NOT safe long-term
L-theanine works amazingly for me, I take it with caffeine and I don’t get anxiety or jitters and feel relaxed all day. I read some speculations that even if gaba does not cross the blood brain barrier it might produce calming effects through interacting with the nervous system via the gut, especially if you have leaky gut. Of course having leaky gut is bad, but if gaba is actually calming you down that could partly explain it.
@@aha527 L-theanine acts acutely, so you should begin feeling the effect shortly after taking it. It’s an aminoacid that doesn’t generate withdrawal symptoms unlike caffeine or nicotine so you can leave it at any time. I take 200mg of l-theanine in the morning with either 100 or 200 mg of caffeine and take one or two extra doses in the afternoon depending in whether I took more caffeine or if I am under a lot of stress. Most people need to find a range that works for them but l-theanine is incredibly safe. If you are not feeling the effects you probably need to up the dose. You can safely open l-theanine capsules and pour the contents in your coffee, which is useful if you want to do 100mg instead of 200 (or 300mg) as you can control the quantity yourself.

Following up a year later - do you still take these? If so, what has been your experience in the last year?
Have you tried Kava? Kava is amazing for anxiety, probably the best thing I've found.
Kava feels just like Valium to me I drink one of those every few days instead of alcohol

I have GABA but have never felt any help from it. Too bad I have this big box of gaba.
I’ve had the opposite experience. It took about 2 months but I did notice an improvement with GABA. Felt like my brain was calmer. On the other hand, I’ve tried Twice to take L Theanine, I started slow with 1/4 pill because I’m sensitive to caffeine, on the 5th day I took 1/2 and was so buzzed I couldn’t sleep and I felt an increase in anxiety. Hi and thankyou for your great post,i just need to share my experience,i have suffered for a long time with mild anxiety in crowded situations shopping centers and places alike my cure for that was a valium and run away from what ever was the trigger, this was not a cure, then over the last 6 to 8 months a new anxiety panic situation started, night panic attacks just as one starts to doze off this terrible wave or surge hard to explain comes over ones body and thats it a very bad night ahead,it got to the point i feared the night also sleep deprived and Bingo Bango life got worse,i tried melatonin tablets made no differance and also started breathing exercises which did give minor relife but still suffered HEBEJEBIES at night, then by chance a good friend mentioned GABA and my situation completely has turned around,i take 1/2 teaspoon mid day and 1/2 before bed no more panic at night restful sleep and wake up refreshed, from the first dose of gaba everthing changed, wonderful gear and thankyou again.
Whoa. This is deep. 😱
I'm watching this all Gabbered up.
Thanks. I didnt like theanine as much last time i tried and did not have much expectations but deceided to try again and this time it agree's more with me. Most likly because i just experienced an excitotoxic hell after supplementing with glutamine.
You are the only person I've read online who's experienced such a problem. Yeah, mixing and matching stuff which affects your head may lead to issues if you don't give a detox period in between.
Great explanations. Thanks.

L-theanine does lower heart rate, which can be problematic for those who have bradycardia.
Been taking l theanine for about 2 days now, calms me down and changes my mood to better every time! I take about 200mg every day when I feel the anxiety come on
Taking it for that long has there been any long term side effects or compensation you’ve had to do?
Save yourself the hassle, and just take it every morning. No cites report an RDA limit needed, nor long term issues. Taking more than 200-300mg a serving seems to have no better effect nor issues.
@@ErinTexas 2 days is long term???
Thanks, this vid helped me alot.

Can you take L-theanine if you take 1 mg. of klonopin at night for sleep and take theanine in the daytime???
I really really urge you to get off those klonopins for sleep. I did the same thing for about a year, and it completely destabilized my brain now. I lost my ability to sleep, and it's only coming back now slowly after months and months of sleepless withdrawal. I suggest you look for a non-benzo remedy for sleep. benzos are NOT safe long-term
I know 5htp ,gaba, and ldopa PEA dont make it across the bbb but I def for sure feel all of them in high doses
5HTP does cross BBB
when Ethel gets mean she gives me the gaba I gotta get offa my glutta means and do some work!
Lol! Smart ass!~♥~
Noice!
Of course having leaky gut is bad, but if gaba is actually calming you down that could partly explain it.
what was the dose and how long it took to give you the relaxing effect... also any side effect ?
No weird side effects, if you take took much it might make you a bit sleepy but theanine can actually enhance cognition and alertness if you take a lower dose.
