  • GABA is one of the major inhibitory neurotransmitters in the brain - it is the brain's primary brake pedal. Issues with GABA can include things like: anxiety, nervousness, excessive worry, inability to shut off the mind, feelings of inner tension, excessive movement, Obsessive-compulsive tendencies and more. In this video Dr. Holmes explains why supplementing with GABA doesn't always work, and what things can influence your body's ability to naturally produce GABA.
    ----Content of this video----
    0:00 - Intro
0:30 - Are supplements the solution to low GABA levels?
1:24 - How GABA is made: locating possible issues for low GABA
3:24 - Important factors needed for GABA production
4:04 - Hormonal factor to move GABA into cells: progesterone
4:44 - Inflammatory effect on mitochondria and GABA production
5:18 - Indirect way to measure GABA levels: organic acids testing
5:50 - Ways to support GABA production

Thank you for explaining how all of these elements work together. I find this video VERY important. It's a good overview. What I need is these steps broken down much slower (because I've forgotten the citric acid cycle) and how progesterone and the others help to create GABA. I have subscribed and I'll be looking at your other articles and videos. Thanks again!

I read recently that zinc is actually a blocker for Gaba, not sure about that one. Also I read Phenibut has a tendency to become addictive. The one thing im trying to understand about oxidative stress in relation to anxiety or depression is that its supposed to be corrected through anti oxidents like green tea or blue berries. I dont understand why people say sugar related foods like blueberries are a good idea if sugar is not good for anxiety.

    • @garyha2650
      @garyha2650 4 роки тому

Addictive, no. On the other hand of course too much is bad like anything, but in this case increased libido tough to satisfy. Aside from that, in my experience, with tame amount, empathy for others, which I think is simply a return to the natural state. If someone is already fine with GABA-B, it has no effect, or that's what I gather from reading. Pretty sure GABA-A is more frontal cortex and related moreso with alcohol effects by the way.

Chlorophyll with Alfalfa is a real dark horse, cant stress that enough. I have been experiencing insomnia for the past 3 years and have tried an Ashwagandha, Passion Flower and Chlorophyll combination which has been helping me sleep like a baby. Breathing meditation, mental attitude, exercise, lifestyle, and diet are also very important to achieve good balanced health.

I have an essential tremor-ES. Spasms have been so bad, I have asked family if the bed or house was shaking. It's me! The skin crawling and tendon pains in high gear does have me depressed and anxious. All activity makes spasms worse. Researching since 6 am brought me to GABA.... This: Novel Therapies for Essential Tremor Based on Positive Modulation of α6-Containing GABAA Receptors.
So I came back to YT to seek more info here on GABA. Having Sjorgrens has not helped. I wonder if it is all related. Hmmm.
I already take B complex, Magnesium, D, and Calcium.
What doctor should be able to help figure this out?

I used to drink a lot before. I've been sober about 7 months. I suspect the alcohol has damaged my brain a bit (gaba receptors etc).
I feel better now than I did when I first decided to quit but I still deal with some anxiety and depression though I probably had that to a smaller degree while I was drinker also but I just didn't notice it then.
I think my brain is slowly recovering.
Would I set my recovery back or damage my brain receptors etc more if I were to use benzodiazepines for example in small amounts maybe once a month?

Make sure you have good vitamin D levels or lots of sunshine, B12 is important - eat more beef. All from neurologist. My husband drinks and has vascular issues. Benzos long term can cause memory, dementia, but minimal use should not cause an issue, not temporary. Any Statins over 10 MG is damaging to your body also. Our brain floats in cholesterol. If you add B12 to your vitamin regime, go with B complex. We need all the B vitamins.
Vit K helps arteries and puts calcium in the bones, not the arteries. We use that now because statins harmed my husband's brain. Can't get it too low. I hope some of this helps. Not medical advice, but I read a lot and am confident in what I shared.

What would be the best way to supplement while tapering off of lorazepam(which affects GABA production)? Tapering off has caused not only stress, increased cortisol levels, but also severe sleep issues.
While undergoing testing to find that ROOT problem(which I currently am), I'd like to find a way to naturally lower the stress & cortisol and increase my sleep.

    • @GoldenGateNum9

Hi I don't know if you found a solution yet but In regards to sleeping problems I think that food and herbs which increase GABA activity are a big piece of the puzzle, I have been experiencing insomnia for the past 3 years and have tried an Ashwagandha , Passion Flower and Chlorophyll combination which has been helping me sleep like a baby. Even better than taking Melatonin capsules which is also a very helpful natural sleeping aid. 'Natures Answer' and 'NOW FOODS' have the best quality supplements. Hope this helps, if you need any advice please get in touch. Peace.

      Hi,
indeed, no one is perfect, that goes for both the speaker and the listener. And i do not expect her to be perfect. But because not all listeners are completely without linguistic flaws, the public you will reach vary greatly depending op your speech. That's why people go to training's and that's why feedback can be useful. i just think she can do better is she pays a little attention to this.
But maybe my comment was a little too brief. It just portraits the effect it had on me.
