    I have that kit and the first time i tried to use it on stainless i broke one of the expanders because it wasnt FULLY inside the pipe. so word of advice, always lube the threads on the center rod, spray a little WD40 or PB blaster on it prior to use and ALWAYS make sure its fully inserted inside the pipe, even if you dont plan to use the whole expanded section or if you have too much, just cut it off afterwards. (this also goes for mild steel).

      +sly5.0gt yeah now after the fact I would probably only recommend this thing for aluminum

    • @trsskater
      @trsskater 7 місяців тому

      I don't think lubing the thread is a good idea. I stead of you struggling to go farther and stopping because you have to try to hard to get it to continue turning instead you are able to put more force into the the device which will lead to you breaking it when you have gone too far. If the thread needs lube to turn on a hand you are likely going to break something even if it's a rusted bolt it can be dangerous without heating it first to break the rust off cause expansions so it can easily turn.

    That expander is not used for that purpose. It is only used to expand a piece of pipe that has been installed previously and was dented where the clamp compressed it. It removes the dent from where the clamp was so whatever piece of exhaust your trying to reuse can be salvaged. Unless your just joking, I thought everyone already new @t? Most motorheads catch on to this at about ten years old.

    I've never seen useable results on steel pipe from using an exhaust pipe expander like these or even the small hydraulic ones. The ones the pro exhaust shops use are large powerful hydraulic ones that cost $tens of thousands$. It takes much more force than any of these DIY tools can handle to stretch steel. The best tool to expand pipe is actually a roller forming tool, and you aren't getting that in a neat little blow molded plastic case from the local automotive store. The only practical purpose of the type of tools shown here is to straighten dented or slightly crushed pipe back to the original diameter.

      Yeah, tried this exact 'made in China' model 2x on thin walled 304...and broke the expansion pieces both times. useless.

    I have a set and for $20 on ebay its helped a lot going from stainless to regular exhaust pipe. I used the small one to expand the stainless pipe on my motorcycle and the mid size on my cars stainless pipe. Use of impact is a must.

    I used this very set two weeks ago, bought on ebay for about $20. Worked fine on aluminized 1 3/4 pipe to expand the muffler outlet about a quarter inch to better fit a new tailpipe that was incorrectly sized by Shafer's. The expander needs to be lubed to expand freely; insert the expander fully so that you are not just expanding the edge of the pipe; use an impact to save effort.

    I tried using this tool on a standard steel exhaust pipe last weekend. I had to put the tool in a vice and use a 20" breaker bar on the end of the nut to actually expand the pipe. It should really be called a pipe _flaring_ tool.

    I've thought about buying one of these for a few years, but have been put off by the negative reviews of the ones, I've seen. Everyone can't afford the hydraulic machines like the ones used in muffler shops. It seems like there would have to be something in the middle between $30 and $8000, but I haven't found it yet. Lol! I've heard the style you featured today was better for making out of round tubing round again. Either way, I still love your channel, this segment, and appreciate what you do, Kyle! Have a good one, brother! 🙋

      Everytime I demo this tool for my friends or buddies,they're blown away by it. Having the ability to torch any bolt or metal part to a cherry red color but a push of a button. Not having to take apart the car worried I may burn it to the ground. "Everyone's fear with torches". All the coils are completely flexible as well to get to the hard to reach bolts/nuts. They sell a kit as well with all the attachments. This is literally one of my favorite tools.

    "The 10mm socket". I know all of you have seen these in the wild, but generally, once you see them out of the package, they run for cover under some table somewhere never to be seen again. Here is what a standard 10mm socket looks like. I like to put a zip tie through them and hook it to my jeans until I need it and then immediately reattach it once I'm finished with it, otherwise, it does what is natural to it and it disappears."

      @patw52pb1 7 років тому +5

      Use lots of quality lube.
      Make sure all of the threads are well lubed before using.
      We have found that dipping the entire expander in high quality 15W-40 full synthetic oil before using it and lubing the inside of the pipe helps make the entire job easier and prolong the life of the expanders.
      It is messy but well worth it.
      With lube we currently get about 30-80 uses before needing replacement depending on the pipe/tube material and wall thickness and the operator... we have one guy that is talented enough he can completely destroy a solid steel cannon ball in seconds. ;)
      Titanium and Inconel are the toughest to expand.

    The expander is too long, which causes 2 major issues: 1) if not fully inserted, you get a bell-mouth pipe. 2) when fully inserted it is possible to either break the tool, or strip threads.

    Muffler shops don't slip then weld. They weld them by tacking them first then welding. They only expand the pipes to mate to different sized pipes. How much time wasted if they slip joint every job.

  • @MrSlipknotsoulfly

    I have one that I tried to use on aluminized pipe and it absolutely wouldn't work. Once it started getting tight, I couldn't hold the pipe still. I put the pipe in a vise and used an impact and it just stripped the bolt that it comes with. Maybe there are different and better brands but whatever I had was garbage.

    • @patw52pb1
      @patw52pb1 7 років тому

      We have found using lots of high quality lube such as full synthetic 15W-40, not using impact and not going too deep (several steps about of about 3/4 inch) helps make the job easier and prolong the tool life, even for the China units.
      Never use without adequate lube even once, it will be irreparably damaged and will fail miserably.
      Just completely dip the entire expander in the oil, it is extremely important to have all of the threads (internal and external) and all of the sliding wedges coated with oil.
      Use a chain type (plumbers) vise to hold the tubing/pipe, used properly it does not damage the pipe/tubing.
      OTC/SPX and Lisle make decent made in the USA units, but they are slightly more expensive.
      There are hydraulic units available, however they are usually more than 10x the cost.

      Search lisle 17350 thats the full kit that will do all tge way up to like 5" pipe but they make lisle li34400 which is what most people use for 2.5" and under. Herd it will also do stainless. You need an impact gun and a big socket tho.
      Think you could review it?

      Wrench life 604 they suck in general unless you heat the pipe then expand it a bit at the end and drive it back a bit. I have wrenched in shops since 91 and never did a shop use these. Fact a guy had one and was bragging how it makes it all easy. he busted the bolt first use. Don't count on it really doing much.

    trash. Get a Lisle like 17350 Pipe Stretcher Kit. You can get one for less than $100 and you can hook hydraulics up to it too. I've had several of these and they just don't hold up. Either the treads give out or the slates break. And that is just after a short time. If you are really set to have a cheap one, get one of the ones that you use a hammer on.

    The Fab Forums what tools do I need to install my exhaust manifolds to the exhaust pipes

  • @zdmcdonal
    @zdmcdonal 7 років тому

    I have to say that these are garbage they may work OK for aluminum pipe but definitely not exhaust.
    I bought one from harbor freight, the outside ramp pieces that get pushed in cracked and broke. So I took it back and exchanged it for another, stripped the bolt piece on that one. Went and rented one from autozone thinking maybe Harbor freights was just junk. Broke the outside pieces and stripped the bolt on that one as well as got it stuck in the pipe. Stopped at O'Reillys and they were going to order a brand new one for me to rent since they were a new store. Went to the hardware store to get a grade 8 bolt for the Harbor freight one while I waited on O'Reillys to come in, twisted off the grade 8 bolt. Went back to O'Reillys and told them to cancel it because I would just break that too. They said go ahead and take it, if it breaks it breaks, stripped that one out too. And that is all without an impact.
    I ended up just going to a local exhaust shop with my pieces and gave the guy a few bucks to expand them for me.

      @patw52pb1 7 років тому

      Not all brands and models are created equal and they all require lots of lubrication and common sense.
      We use them in a commercial environment and with proper lube we currently get about 30-80 uses before needing replacement depending on the pipe/tube material and wall thickness and the operator.

    • @zdmcdonal
      @zdmcdonal 7 років тому

      Yeah, I totally agree that not all brand are created equal. Just stating my experience. I did take the rubber bands off before using them and greased everything up real well with wheel bearing grease.
      Maybe the wall thickness of the pipe I was expanding was too much for it, not sure what gauge it was, bought my pipes online. Do you know what the brand you guys have had good experience with?

    • @patw52pb1
      @patw52pb1 7 років тому +1

      Grease is not recommended by the high end expander manufacturers recommends using full synthetic 15W-40 oil not grease. I also avoid using impacts on expanders.
      We just dip/soak the entire expander in oil before using because the entire internal and external threaded area and the sliding wedges require lubrication. It is messy, but it works.
      We have used no name units, and units from Snap-On, Mac, Cornwell, Sears, Northern, Harbor Freight, OTC/SPX and Lisle.
      I prefer OTC/SPX and Lisle, but also personally own and use the Harbor Freight set.
      OTC/SPX and Lisle offer expanders that are made in the USA that are slightly more expensive than the China units.
      Check the country of origin, even the big name tool vendors are selling units made in China that in my opinion are not as rugged as the made in USA units.
