Amazing to hear. I also did a whole online course to learn everything in detail: surfcompanions.com/the-surfskate-course Keep me posted about your progress;)
Thank you for the video; I am a beginner / intermediate surfer living away from the ocean so I bought a carver surf skate to help me train in land; I only had done roller blades, so a skate is totally new for me; I filmed myself on pumping and trying to make a bottom turn „following“ your tutorial, but clearly I am still afraid of leaning out of my center line.... so not too effective yet’ but your videos and book will help me progress in surf and surf skate; thank you; if you give lessons of surf skate close to Munich please organize a group class 😂
Thanks for your surfskating videos. I‘m new on the surfskate and in august i will take part in a surf course and my hope is to have some success in the water with training on the surf skate as a beginner. ;-)
How is that Dinghy? I like the maneuverability and speed on my Dinghy Turbo but I like the responsive, surfy feel of my YOW Kontiki which makes for the best carving, but well also the stable, straighter cruising of my Landyachtz Dropcats. I find the grace in each. Also, how is the Penny? My neighbor has one with big, squishier wheels that I liked riding.
Great tutorial! It took me a while to realize that the arm reaching and the look are crossing. I was making the mistake to reach towards the point I was looking, to the side, not forward on a diagonal, so that would shift my weight and I would fall backwards. Reaching forward made all the difference.
@@surfcompanions This comment just made me realize I might be surfing with wrong hand position the whole time. I am a goofie, so my right foot is ahead. I always (no matter whether it was a right or left wave) used my right arm as leading arm - whereas I now suspect I should switch the leading arm depending on the direction of the wave (whether I am surfing my left which is natural and whether it is right, which is backside for me). Is it true?? :) It might explain why backside waves were always easier for me
Hi Daniel! I would like to start skate a surfskate but I won t spend much money and have a good compromise. Which surfskate do you suggest me? Greetings from Italy
They are several brands but important is to look for a deck which allows you to have the same stance then in your surfing. I rather would invest a little more into quality instead of cheap. I love smoothstar which is my eyes the closest you can come into surfing, if you want to have the „cheap“ version pf smoothstar you could check out slide, but I am not a selling advisor. I can tell it only out of my experience;) hope I could help;)
Thanks so much for these videos, can you please let me know where I can get the Miller Division Kirra Surfskate 31.5 X 10, because everywhere I look online is sold out?
I think because of the high demand surfskates in general are low on stocks. But I don‘t know right now where, except , the internet you could find it. Support your local shop I would do and check skateshops and surfshops. They can also give you an answer for delivery times, that what i would do. ;)👌
@@surfcompanions Cheers for your quick reply... yep, already thought of & done those things. I did notice that on the Miller Division site, when you try to register to leave details for restock notifications, that it requires some sort of number (DNI)? Which when I looked it up is a Spanish thing, so I am assuming that Miller Division is based in Spain then?! (seems like a lot of mucking around to leave simple details to be notified)
If I were you I should also check carver surfskates. I love them! And any good skateshop should know and have them. They are a bit more pricy but worth every cent.I only speak from experience. ;)
@@surfcompanions Hiya... cheers for the suggestion... I already have a Smoothstar 34″ FILIPE TOLEDO #77... I was just wanting something different, smaller with more traditional skate/cruiser trucks setup... I managed to find a Miller Division Kirra Surfskate 31.5 X 10 on Spain's Amazon.
Can you please release / offer 'The Intermediate Surf Companion' book in PDF form! That way you avoid the COVID-19 restrictions (such as with Australia).
we are sending again to Australia:) because of the "working with your book" concept, take notes etc.. we decided at the moment not to do a online version. By the way: The book is produced CO2 neutral and is printed on recycled paper.:) Thanks so much for your comment.
Does a surfskate make sense when you already have a proper longboard pumping setup? It does look super fun, but surfspots in central europe are scarse and a surfskate is 200+€.
The techniques we show are possible on skate longboards, too but its harder to perform them. Its the same in surfing: if you surf a longboard but want to peform like you are on a shortboard. Its way harder. If I would be a „landlock“ surfer with less acces to real waves I would rather invest in a surfskate, because it will give you the closest feeling to real surfing. My opinion;) Ask a friend or in a skateshop to try one out than you feel the difference;) hope I could help;)
Hey! When i tried to turn with my board i am actually fall down. I do no know why but i loose my orientation and find myself on the ground. Do i do something wrong? It feels like the board has too much turning when i lean to one side... :)
Hey and ach, yes if the trucks are too flexible it could be that you fall over. When you bend the trucks are your wheels touching the bottom side of the board? Is the surf skate maybe also too small? Sometimes that could also be the reason
@@surfcompanions No the wheels are not touching the board. And i guess the board dimensions is just ok for me. But i will try to squeeze the trucks a little bit. Like you said maybe they are too flexible right now. :)
I wanna learn surf maneuvers on land with my Carver. My only dilemma is that I surf regular but skate goofy ☹️ I tried to skate with regular foot but it feels so so awkward like I'm gonna easily fall ☹️
The techniques what we show in the book is possible to transfer it on the surfskate, but all illustrations are for surfers;) but every surfskate tutorial I make is be a better surfer.
Hey Ka Nahn, the movement on the surfboard is the same as on the surfskate: Compress, Reach&hold. In the water it feels of course a bit different, because every wave is different and if nature (the waves) are not allowing deep bottom turns it is also hard to train it. If you live on a fast barreling wave it is hard to work on a bottom turn,so maybe check the wave form and conditions if the waves allow it. Keep working with the word cues;) Let us know if it helped;) thanks for your comment;)

I find it difficult to reach and hold the ground without losing my balance and falling off at the same time because the surfskate is not as stable as the more usual skateboard ... : ( I still have a long way to go before I can do this efficiently without thinking consciously.
During the ride you don‘t have to touch the ground. I showed it without the skateboard to give a feeling what reaching forward means;) compress, reach forward and hold. Let us know your progress;)
