Bob, thanks for the answer to my RetroCastle question. You’re right-total curiosity. I actually prefer to play N64/PS1 on original consoles. I use the MiSTer for 8- & 16-bit era consoles. Thank you so much for clarifying!
17:19 - those Unico monitors may be crap on release, but they are still the best option for switching from a CRT to flat screen in an arcade cabinet, despite the issues.
Just got one, and its satisfactory.
I HIGHLY recommend getting one lf those $13 arcade CGA to VGA Adapters on ebay (may say converter, but technically an adapter). This gets around the high contrast problem with some JAMMA boards, as the VGA input reads the CGA signal at the proper contrast. Also, it makes connecting from something like a WG K7000 series to the Unico way simpler with no wire cutting needed.
@ 6:00 There is an RGB sense pin in the SCART specification (pin 8), if it's higher than 9.5V, it's RGB 4:3, if it's lover (like 5V), it still switches to RGB, but later models (mid 90s on) switch to 16:9, i.e. the TV letterboxes your game. Some TV have an aspect ratio override you can access trough remote and or OSD.
Always a hassle.
Also, it is convenient that most TVs switch automatically to RGB when a console connected this way is turned on.

For streaming digital video content from my DVDs ripped to mp4 I have dedicated a cheap PC set to output 640 x 480 in Windows 10 running VGA into a Mystic Prism passive sync combiner into a GBS control VGA port and then downscaled out via component into a consumer CRT. This has been the fewest links in the chain solution I have found though I am hoping the Mistercast eventually solves this problem as well.
Third Strike and Street Fighter in general has always struggled with using GSM or hex editing to patch to 240p. But maybe more testing can be done. One thing I have noticed is that even different region variants of PS2 games will respond differently to trying to forge 240p, so that is something QuantamGuitar might want to pursue. Shoot maybe that old HD Xploder for the PS2 produces different results.
@25:12 so I’ve been messing around with this issue for years now and I can say for sure that this is a issue with the games. 3rd strike, KoF orochi saga, Cvs2…. lots of those 480i ps2 fighting game just straight up crash when forced to ANY progressive setting. There is a hex edit you can do but I’m pretty sure it’s doing the same thing that gsm is doing as when I tested it the same results occurred. The game crashes. I’ve read that these hacks only work through composite video and I don’t have the cables anymore to test.
For streaming dvd rips on a crt, I really think a ps3 is the best option. You can buy a refurbished 1tb 2.5” hdd for around $20 and some hd retrovision component cables and you can fit an almost endless amount of DVDs. You can even stream them over a network if they’re on your pc with universal media server. I also have a Sony bdp s780 which is the newest player with component output and while that works well, it supports less codecs than the ps3 and the storage options aren’t as good.

I would like to help out Adam Brady I am from the UK too and have gone through this myself I have tried a HDMI to compose cable and it was awful then I got a HDMI to S-Video and that wasn't much better I looked for a HDMI to RGB SCART with you can't get so i ended up getting a HDMI to component (YPbPr) box which worked great the picture was a great picture but didn't have the connections on my 36" CRT TV so got a Behar Bro GARO I later found out the SCART ports have component built into them and made my own cable following the pin outs and it works amazing but looks up what the SCART port do on your own TV as it's not very common to have Component on SCART but i get 1080i imagine on an old CRT and it looks amazing playing PS5 games on it
Hello Bob, is there a cheaper option than the RetroTink 4K that can prevent dropouts in resolution switching with old computer resolutions, including VGA @ 70Hz? I know the RetroTink 4K can support this, but I was hoping for some other device that can scale the picture to 1080p without getting dropouts when the source resolution changes.
The OSSC Pro in scaler mode should be able to, however I don’t have a way to test. Sorry!
@@RetroRGB I know that the OSSC Pro can handle the resolutions. I am currently using the old OSSC. However, I did not know if the OSSC can prevent dropouts when the source resolution changes.
Yes, in scaler mode, as it's buffering the signal.
