Thank you. I just bought a car booster from Canadian tire and they say to put the negative clamps like you did. I didn't know that. I kind was questioning the booklet.
Since the batteries contain hydrogen gas, if a spark happens close to this gas the battery can ignite. The acid would then be spread all over the area, including on your skin and in your eyes. To avoid this, connecting the final connection to a bare piece of metal will divert any spark away from gas given off by the battery. If you touch a positive cable to a negative cable with the other ends already attached to a live battery, it would create a huge spark and the jolt may injure you.
You forgot to say that you have to run a little while since the alternator need to charge up the battery, at idle it doesn't do much. And you pretty scratch you new paint, just hook up to a metal flange.
This is a good way but not the best way. You do not start the dead car. After 5 minutes of the booster cable being attached the dead car you disconnect the cable then you start. Doing this will prevent any damage to your alternator or battery
If your going to run the vehicle with the good battery you should run it long enough to put a charge in the dead battery. You should never run the vehicle while boosting as you can cause a voltage surge that could blow the alternator or other electronics in modern vehicles. Running while boosting was done years ago before electronics and computers. I am a licences mechanic with 50 plus years experience.
@@Gord001ca thank you for your reply… And approximately how long (on average ) do you connect the two batteries to run it to put a charge in the dead battery?
@@blueskyvibes that depends on how dead it is. 10 15 min might be enough in some cases. It also depends on the output of the charging system on the good vehicle.
Positive dead, Positive Live, Negative Live, Ground Dead. NOT Positive live then ground live first. This is how people get hurt accidentally touching the leads. If the Positive lead is on the dead battery it's not going to touch the ground lead hanging over the headlight. Then when the cable is live after being connected to the live battery the ground is all you need to attach. This order is recommended on the safety label that comes with battery boost cables. Everything is right except the order demonstrated. The proper safe method: 1. Primary positive lead on dead battery terminal (make sure negative lead is hanging over plastic like headlight) 2. Secondary positive lead to live battery terminal. 3. Secondary negative lead to live battery terminal. 4. Primary negative lead to chassis ground on dead battery vehicle. Please fix the video for better safety. It was good to explain why the spark is dangerous. However, that seems very unlikely to happen. Many people smoke around open hoods and batteries venting. The cells would need to be very dry and also actively charging to be off gassing that much. Usually the hood is vented enough. But obviously someone has had a bad experience or else there would not be a recommendation to do it that way. Probably a good idea to wear safety glasses and gloves.
i always put neg to the neg terminal and the positive to the positive terminal, that dangerous? and they say don't touch the two cables together when hooked up at live battery, it creates sparks but is that it, can it explode some how.
seems this video is not done according to the usual instructions. like the order of connections l think should be different , was it red to plus on dead r to p on live , black to minus on live , bl to engine on dead.....one reson is cables can touch and short if wrong. and so important to tell ignition must be all the way turned off before conneting ,and disconnectiong some say on both cars , cos spark can damage expensive car computer. then start donor , wait some minuits , start receiver. wait rather long to charge , turn both off , dont move cables while charging , then cables off in reverse order, but dunno , many have live car running so ign is on there, dont know if safe, also remove ring watch can get very hot was it glowing if tool touches them and poles. and some rules about waiting time after connecting to let power have time to go between batteries or was it mostly before disconnectiog to make spark smaller, wait some minuites, more is better. just google to find right instructions im not so sure abou this all. als , charging empty battery by driving or idling is hard on alternator can damage some say. then better to use a charger. found this, never run both car while car are plug together. It mess battery and alternator because of the AMP and volt generated by both alternators are different from each vehicle. never knew this before, l thought very bad to remove cables with both running.

It is a fake video ! Young Drivers giving out bad advice! The car on the left side did not have a dead battery! If you connect the negative clamp on the painted surface it wouldn't have connection to the car body. The negative side has to be clamped to the engine block or any unpainted surfaces. By the way how you did it it is damaging the paint on the front of the car. The rust is going to start at the same area. Please take this video down and post a new video for the Young Drivers.
Who would start the car from the passenger side? What if the car rolls a way it would be out of control. Young Drivers teaching people to do stupid things. Try to start a standard car from the passenger side when it is in gear ! You would be under the vehicle in no time. In Canada no standard cars aside from bmws can start without the clutch depressed. In the case of bmws they can only avoid clutch lockout in neutral so that wouldn’t ever happen. Also if you park your manual car without the handbrake you’re an idiot
Not great advice. Beware. Do not run the donor car you could damage hundreds of dollars in electronics. Do not connect to painted surface that will not provide a good circuit.
Who else is watching this in their dead car ? ☺️

This tutorial is missing one of the most important parts: you will likely have to slight press on the accelerator for the car that is giving power

You can't connect the negative to a painted surface. It won't work.

So what you’re saying is turn off the good vehicle… And boost/start the dead car, while the good battery car is not running. Right??
@@blueskyvibes that’s correct or you could cause a voltage surge and damage that vehicles electronics.

Ya try not hooking it up to painted metal.
Unpainted metal. Like on engine block.
