Little surprised Vale Decem didn't even get a mention. Yeh I'm not too sure I like what it represents in 10s regeneration, but that track is epic, on a huge scale I recon, and at least the ending can be used in other contexts. Also I would've gone with The Dark and Endless I can't remember the rest of the name but it's the replacement for The Daleks. I think it ups the anty from the last sale track

Doctor Who is one of the few TV shows who’s score I listen to recreationally, and man do I appreciate this list for highlighting some tracks I actually don’t listen to that often.
Not gonna lie, I know it would seem kind of inappropriate amongst so many moody, epic, intricate pieces, but one of my favorite tracks is Donna’s theme and all its variations. One of the most over the top *fun* compositions I ever heard.

An insightful deconstruction of what makes composers storytellers in their own rights. It can be very easy to simply deliver track sound-a-likes or background fodders to fill out the soundtrack, and you can tell that ain't the case here. Gold clearly cared about delivering biting emotionalism in Doctor Who, and this is a lovely tribute to him. Good job, mate.

Personal favourites that went unmentioned incoming:
The Lone Dalek - Such a brilliant piece, especially the latter half. Equal parts melancholy and inspiring, it would have been a perfect regeneration piece, with a little editing.
Boe - What a way describe immortality. Mixing choral singing with a strumming guitar, it gives the sense of a journey, a walk along a lonely path, with all the wonder of eternity. It brings to mind the feeling of a sunset.
The Master Suite - The repetitious dance up and down a scale, matching the rhythm of the Master's heartbeat, gives a really clever insight into the villain's unstable mind.
The Dark and Endless Dalek Night - This track is one I consider just as much a part of the Dalek's image as the one on your list, except this one feels more like a scene from the perspective of a full-on invasion.
You and Me, Amy - Perfectly translates the sadness of the Doctor's sacrifice in The Big Bang. It feels more personal than some of the other sad tracks, though. Instead of a full orchestra, such as in The Life and Death of Amy Pond, this one has a limited range, but it works all to the track's favour.
A Good Man (Twice Upon a Time variation) - Technically not allowed by you're guidelines but I thought I'd include it. I feel like the questioning of the 12th doctor's morality was a subtle one throughout his tenure, as we slowly get to see him step into the role of a hero, and I feel one of the things that illustrate this very well is this variation of his theme. Very triumphant, a hint of tragedy, and completely unapologetic, just like 12 by the end of his run. Notice I didn't include the question mark in the title of this song. That was intentional.

I haven't seen any videos on UA-cam to do with Murray Gold's tracks and as someone who really connects with his work on Doctor Who I'm appreactive of this upload - especially the fact that it's a Top 20 instead of 10! It must have taken ages to listen to every single track of his.
My Top 10 tracks by Murray Gold:
    1. The Dream of a Normal Death
    2. Four Knocks
    3. Doomsday
    4. The Rueful Fate of Donna Noble
    5. Amy in the TARDIS
    6. This Is Gallifrey: Our Childhood. Our Home
    7. The Doctor Forever
    8. Life Among the Distant Stars
    9. The Doctor's Theme Series 4
    10. Madame de Pompadour
Surprised you didn't mention anything from The Family of Blood two-parter - there's some really great stuff from there (including The Dream of a Normal Death) and I think it highlights Gold's ability to portray sadness in his music.
Very glad Four Knocks was your top choice - it's a great track that I had always wanted to own since I saw that amazing 'I could do so much more' scene on broadcast.
I'll also join you in thanking Murray Gold for all his amazing work - some of which makes up my favourite music ever.

    • @thelordstarfish
      @thelordstarfish 6 років тому +1

Hooray, I'm not alone! Yeah, the scene was misguided at best, but that epic choir rendition of the Doctor's theme as the regeneration finally went into full-force was pretty spectacular... I just wish it was used for something more epic. Like, hearing that music, I'm thinking more of something like, an epic battle going on, the hero taking a seemingly fatal attack from their foe and then at the last second getting back on their feet, pushing through the immense pain to defeat their foe in one swift strike. But no, what we got is... the Doctor standing alone in his TARDIS, being in the process of regenerating but being totally super not okay with it.

    • @hothotheat3000

"I don't want to go" still makes me cringe. It really set Matt Smith up to be disliked by the audience. Fortunately, he was fantastic and didn't have the regeneration tantrum of a selfish twat when he left.

My Lord. I am absolutely astonished you made such a well thought out list. I have #4, 3, and 2 in my music library and I thought I could guess #1 but you swooped in and surprised me even further.
I hated Capaldi’s first series and couldn’t get into his second. Sadly I stopped watching. I basically forgot it existed until the new Doctor was revealed.
Your list allowed me to revisit some of the best moments of this show and reminded me that deep down I still care and very much love this show.
I want nothing more than to rewatch New Who from Series 1 until the most recent. I want to fall in love with this show again and embrace every moment, good or bad.

All the Strange Strange Creatures has always been my fav and I actually wasn't expecting it to be so high on your list because I thought it might be cliche. But I've loved it since the series 4 trailer came out. It was an epic trailer with epic music and I watched it all the time and series 4 was my favorite series. I freaked when they played it in The Time of the Doctor.

Shepherd’s Boy is my favourite, probably because it reminds me of the myth of sisyphus, Doomsday is also a personal favourite, and one that I like that doesn’t seem to get much attention is A Dazzling End, I think it captures Donna’s wonderful spirit in facing off against the inevitable end but embraces the end with vigour and determination

My favourite track, and possibly the one that makes me cry the most, also happens to be the one that ties into the saddest non Doctor or non companion scene. So, what is this heartbreaking masterpiece? "The Lone Dalek". Even my parents thought they'd never cry for what is literally an outer space Nazi, but this really brings out something that not even Terry Nation saw in the Daleks, but with the full lengths of writer Robert Sherman, producer Russell Davies, and even director Joe Ahearne, they saw deep down. Davros, like Hitler is a maniacal, merciless, pitiless, genocidal monster who cares nothing about other species regardless of anything and programmed this uncontrollable hatred and fear into these mutant octopuses and locked them inside ice cold metallic tanks, turning them into relentless killing machines, and nothing can stop it. Well, except Rose Tyler when her DNA contaminated it. A friend of mine actually gave a very accurate analogy of "how would a Nazi soldier react if his life was saved by a blood transfusion from a Jewish person?" You also have to keep in mind that it's emotional because even though Rose is far from my favourite companion, she's still important to the show's history as she's the one living creature who helped the Doctor begin to put the Time War in his past, push the PTSD aside and change. The Doctor can accept change, but the Dalek can't. Speaking of which, does this sound like Seth Brundle in The Fly to you? But nothing, not even the acting, writing, lighting, camera angles or even Murray Gold's music is more heartwrenching than....
    "Are you frightened, Rose Tyler?"
    "Yeah."
    "So am I."
    "Ex-term-in-nate."
What an amazing masterpiece of music from Murray Gold, his orchestra and choir.

What I love most about Doctor Who music is how it always has something new or unique. considering many composers stick to a form, theme or notes, Murry gold has done an amazing job not being a one hit wonder, creating a ton of music that when you listen to it, you know the episode it was in, and character themes fit just as perfectly.
I put him up there with Williams and Zimmer and many others because of that.

I have to agree, four knocks are my favorite track of all time from Doctor Who because it makes you feel so lost and it makes you feel melancholic. It's like doing something you have to do because of your inner virtue. It's like a song for a sequence for when your life is flashing before your eyes ending with a dramatic violin.

I’ll miss Murray Gold, his music was the soundtrack to my childhood but I admit he started to feel a bit stale in recent years so I’m happy to get a new sound for the show. And a genuinely new sound, not just a copy of previous works, maybe something more ambient and synthy like Blade Runner.
I haven’t seen the whole video yet, but I’ll say my favourite track at the moment is ‘This Is Gallifrey’, who knows, you might remind me of some others that will change my mind.

    - Madame De Pompadour - I love this episode so much, and the music all of the way through is incredible, and ties the episode together. It's the same music all the way through, but it's so hopefule at the start of the episode, and so sad at the end
    - Rose's Theme - not much to be said about this one. I love it and it makes me cry
    - Doomsday - For exactly the same reason as Rose's Theme
Also series 5 ep1 has such good music throughout. I am the Doctor is obviously the one people think of, but pieces like Little Amy and Can I Come With You? are also incredible
I'm sure there are more, but these are the ones that immediately come to mind

When he said "Nobody chooses this one as their top theme" before he revealed his number one theme, I thought it might have been "The Morpheus Song" from Sleep No More 😆 (Which despite not being very musical, is IMO a great and Scary theme).

42:23 I'm surprised there was no reference to the version used during the Galifray opening in End of Time Part 2 (officially named Council of the Time Lords) as an honourable mention. Not only is it a more militaristic version to fit with the Time War but the differences in tone act as a signifier of what the Time Lords became during the Time War in comparison to how the Doctor had previously chosen to remember them in the RTD era.

For me personally my favourite music pieces by Murray gold from worst to best are
    1. The majestic tale of a madman with a box
    2. Shepards boy
    3. Song of freedom
    4. The long song
    5. The Long dark and endless night/the daleks (both very powerful and effective pieces)
    6. Boe series 3 version
    7. The doctors theme from series 4
    8. I am the doctor (it's brilliant but falls just short of a majestic tale of a madman with a box)
    9. Vale decem
    10. March of the Cybermen from the next doctor (love the original but this one is more fun and gives you a build up)
    11. The master vainglorious
    12. Where there's tears there is hope (Ik it's not an official release but its still a Murray gold piece and I love it )
    13. All the strange creatures
    13. The majestic tale of an idiot/ a good man (they are quite similar at points)
    15. The doctor forever
    16. Little Amy
    17. Martha theme
    18. This gallifrey our childhood , our home
    19. Together or not at all
    20. The clouds will pass
    Honourable mentions
    Words win wars
    Victory of the daleks
    Evolution of the daleks
You put the devil in me
    Missy theme
The rueful fate of Donna noble
    Final days
    To save the doctor
    The greatest story never told
    Four knocks

Great video, unexpected but I enjoyed it nonetheless, my favourite piece is the 10th Doctor theme (not any variation in particular) because I see as the representation of The Doctor’s soul; broken but hopeful and, when I’m annoyed or upset, the theme makes me feel better.

to me, "this is gallifrey" is to doctor who what the motif from the interstellar soundtrack heard in the tracks "s.t.a.y.", "where we're going" and the second half of "day one" among others is to that film
both of them are melodies which just fall into place to me

Literally just re-watched this video now and I am surprised that the Madame de Pompadour suite is not on there as I thought it was really good piece of music. Also I thought that Martha's theme would be there, doomsday suite, a dream of a normal death, amy's death music in the angels take manhattan and together or not at all music

Can I ask how you put this up without getting a copyright strike? I'm interested to know cos I'm planning to do a 'deep dive' into Murray Gold's music on my channel (without monetisation). I heard Clever Dick Films uploads his videos as 'unlisted' so that there's time for UA-cam to flag it and for him to dispute the claim so that it's demonetised but he can still upload it.

Brilliant video, with a few surprising choices! Funnily enough though, you're the third person I've known to put 'Four Knocks' in first place, so it's clearly a very popular track.
Having just completely redone my top 25 with the Series 9 soundtrack release, because I love lists...
25 - This Is Gallifrey: Our Childhood, Our Home (Series 3)
24 - Rose Defeats the Daleks (Series 1)
    23 - The Cyberman (Series 2)
    22 - Vale Decem (10 Specials)
    21 - Tooth and Claw (Series 2)
    20 - Melody Pond (Series 6)
    19 - Madame de Pompadour (Series 2)
18 - The Vampires of Venice (Series 5)
    17 - I Am The Doctor (Series 5)
16 - Clara in the Tardis (Series 7)
    15 - The Long Song (Series 7)
    14 - Face the Raven (Series 9)
13 - Silence Is All You Know (Series 6)
    12 - The Daleks (Series 1)
    11 - Whose Enigma (Series 7)
    10 - The Doctor's Theme (Series 1)
    09 - A Lonely Decision (Series 5)
08 - All The Strange, Strange Creatures (Series 3)
    07 - The Lone Dalek (Series 2)*
    06 - Four Knocks (10 Specials)
    05 - The Singing Towers (Series 9)
    04 - The Doctor's Theme (Series 4)
    03 - A Good Man? (Series 8)
02 - Every Christmas Is Last Christmas (Series 8)**
    01 - The Shepherd's Boy (Series 9)
*'lone Dalek' obviously refers to the events in Series 1, but the music is from the Series 2 finale. Much as I like the more subtle, unreleased variant from Dalek as well.
** I cheat a little with this one, as I only care for it with the inclusion of the vocals - which were omitted from the official release. But I honestly love the piece so much, hence its high placement and am not willing to shift it down just because the official release was inferior.
Also happy to see all ten series represented in the list still. Murray's work is just superb.

I always considered the Daleks theme to be refined evil. It sounds graceful and could be considered elegant but for the Daleks it's the wrong reasons. It's just a evil track showing the might of one the deadliest races.
