Hi Shannon, I wanted to share something that happened today. I started to make a EPP kimono jacket with scraps from various projects. I got my inspiration from you. Today I brought my work with me on the trains while traveling to my family for the American Thanksgiving. On the way home, I was on a very crowded train so there were very few seats. I snuggled in next to my husband next to a young family. Soon another young girl and her mother joined our set of seats. The girl was fascinated by my sewing so I engaged her by asking her what her favorite fabric piece was. She started asking me questions. Soon this 6 year old, the other 6 year old girl and both the mothers were taking a quick impromptu class on EPP! I gave each girl a needle, thread and a hexagon scrap (with the parent’s permission ). They were so excited ant both mothers were interested in sewing again, they had learned from family members many years ago. One mom even told me about my favorite place to get reclaimed fabric. Then we met one family again on another train and the girl said she wanted to sew all the next day when she was going to meet friends. It made a tiring trip much more enjoyable for everyone and I hope that I sparked some imagination and urge to sew in another generation. Thank you for sharing EPP with us, you are making the world a more creative place.
When I stopped knitting (this chronic hand pain sucks), I donated 20 odd years of supplies I’d collected to a local thrift shop. I hope someone went home with like half the products Knit Picks sells and made beautiful, fun things with it. ❤❤ (so many balls of dishy SO MANY) We love thrift stores!

When it comes to piecing together such small pieces, you really don't have to worry about the grainline. The seams work to stabilize the overall fabric .
I would like to add a tip for your viewers for seam allowances and cutting. It can be however big you like, but anything more than 5/8 inch is a bit big in my opinion. With that said, as a bit of a helpful guide, you can always make a "cutting template" to trace out your shapes that include the seam allowance, then use a bunch of cut out paper pieces cut to the size you want, to make it easier to streamline the process. reference: currently working on a king size hexagon quilt that I've hand sewn for the past 10 years, and the top is close to being done, but not quite done yet.

She's going to be so happy when I show her 😁❤ So I kinda want to start a paper piecing project, but I didn't know own what I wanted to make. A couple months ago I watch a video of a lady who made and entire dress out of patchwork fabric from a bunch of fat quarters she had been acquiring. So I thought that looked like fun and found some fun jelly rolls that I thought would be fun. So now I have a crazy idea of doing a paper piecing project and making a fun summer dress out of it. Am I crazy?
Oh, very fun, definitely be sure to tell her! I will both encourage you on the dress, and warn you that it will be _very_ heavy, just so you have that in mind as making design decisions!!
I've been thinking about doing a chunk of paper piecing on a dress or skirt, where the hexagons start out sparser at the top and then end with a large chunk of sewn-together hexagons on the side. I'm not sure I can describe it well. I think a dress would be fabulous!

I've been working on an EPP quilt with 1.75 inch 60 degree diamonds. if you tilt them, they fit on 2.5 inch jelly roll strip nicely, and with one simple cut. I'm doing 6 colored diamonds together, surrounded by black joining diamonds, for a stained glass look, and i love it.
Mine too! I’m a slow sewer (sewist?) and take forever. I decided to take a break from my pattern making of a denim jacket to “quickly” sew up some flannel pjs. Of course they are a black and blue tartan and I’m pattern matching. After I work on them for awhile I can’t tell right side from wrong! And of course I’m French seaming them cause they’ll get a lot of wear (I’m still sad the butterfly cotton lawn pjs were NOT French seamed and I’ve had to stitch up the back a couple of times). I’m still working on them but I feel the end is near!! I will have them finished for xmas!!!! 😂😂😂
I trace the “weird” shapes around my “cut to size template” with a Fixion pen, then it is so easy to sit and cut bunches out of a large scrap by cutting across a line of 3-6 high drawn templates, then cross cutting smaller snips of the oddball micro triangle corners off. I can cut so many templates quickly with scissors or a rotary cutter and ruler. I don’t iron scraps for EPP, because as you pull taunt around the template to thread or glue baste, it smoothes it right out. Love the pride comment as well. Go you! Happy stitching.
The amazing thing about scrap quilts is that the more fabrics you have the chances that one fabric will coordinate with others increases almost exponentially… if you have only a few fabrics, they need to blend perfectly or the project looks weird…. And that perfect match process can be daunting and you need to do it BEFORE you sew a single stitch (ie the actual fun part) Good luck crafting!!
Hello Shannon, I watched your video on EPP. I feel in love with the idea of using my scraps. So I started doing EPP using all my flannel scraps. Now I am not sure if I love you or hate you for showing me this craft. Ha ha. I have become obsessed with this craft. I really enjoy watching how fast I can do this. I did find it challenging putting together the pieces. A lot of trial and error. Once I figured out what worked for me, there was no stopping me. So thank you for showing us the EPP craft. I will be doing this over the winter months.
So many lovely scraps for crafting with! The finished quilt is going to be a textural paradise. I’ve just finished off a little crazy quilted pouch as a gift for a friend and I’m looking forward to starting a new EPP project. I'm enjoying your sewing escapades so much! Having been a sewer for nearly 60 years, I've tried many methods of dealing with some of the dilemas that I see you experiencing on your channel. I just have to share this with you and your followers-there are multiple free hexagon generators on the internet. I've used one for several years, especially with tiny scraps.
I love that I can use my cricut for my paper shapes. Etsy has SVG files made for the purpose, with guides for how to resize your shapes as needed. I am not proficient in any of the computer programs which might make it easy to draft up thirty degree diamonds exactly one inch on each side, and cricut design software is in no way equipped for that. When I prepare for a project, I make a "joined" shape with as many pieces as I can fit in an 11x11 inch square. The pieces can't be touching, or the kerf might eat into your pieces unevenly. I have several of these joined shapes saved for easy access later. I sit on the bridge between the finicky fabric cutting, and the bulky seams of folded squares. for my two 1" hexagon projects, unless I am fussy cutting, I cut all my fabric into 2.5" squares. When I'm glue basting, I stick my paper to the middle and go through a batch and trim the corners off. I get a thrill from the tiny scraps heaping up, and then they all go into my stuffing bag.
Hi Shanon- if you wanted to be inspired on a color wash layout of your panel- “the last homely house” created by Kate might help. She did a beautiful quilt English paper piecing and the combination of colored scraps was amazing.🎉

oh no - more crafting videos - whatever shall we do? For my hexagon quilt, I made a template out of a clear lid to something or other and literally traced it on my fabric over and over and then cut out following the lines. It was really fast and easy - especially if I doubled or quadrupled the fabric. I was working with fat quarters, so it was not shifty at all. I used a regular pen for light fabric, and a white acrylic gel pen for dark fabric. Since any marking will be on the inside of the quilt, I didn't care if I cut inside or outside the lines. Whoosh! So fast!

Press your thin paper templates to the side of freezer paper that has a shine (the plastic coated side). After they cool, cut your now thicker templates out with scissors. Thank you.
I know what you mean about the USPS. We had a check that was written to pay a bill, and it was delivered only half there to the company we were to pay. Yesterday, that company was nice enough to send us a letter which they enclosed the torn check and weaved the last fee for 30 days.
Watching this video while working on hand-quilting my queen sized EPP quilt that I've been working on since 2021. Thanks for keeping me company and on theme! (Also: I really loved the ironing footage. It was so soothing and enjoyable!)
When I’m doing the cutting (I work almost exclusively with woven cottons) I will use a bit of template plastic, or the top of a croissant container or some kind of thin plastic that is transparent (all fussy cutting) to make my cutting template. I will add my minimum seam allowance (1/4”) to that template, then cut it out on the seam allowance line. Then I can figure out the placement I want and I trace it on the fabric with a sharpie. Then the cut lines are in the seam allowance, and I cut them slightly outside of those lines so I know I have enough space. It helps take some of the guess work out when deciding my placement on the fabric. I’ve been working on an EPP quilt for the last 12 years or so, and it’s all collecting fabric and fussy cutting. I’ll email a photo of it

I am in the middle of a hexie EPP project that I started in Oct 21! (I also cut fabric for the hexies into 2.5” squares, works a treat!) I love the jewel/heart shape, I was planning to do a plus sign next but I just might change my mind. 😅
I have to commute to the office by train once a week (well, technically twice, but I just can’t be bothered 😅) and I think this might be the perfect craft to take with me ❤
I have both retired and lost weight. As I have adjusted old things a changed my style, I think I will make a mixed hexi quilt from my old clothes. I bought diamond templates for boxes, but i want it to be quilting cotton.
My solution to the cutting out of hundreds of pieces has been to fold the fabric as many times as necessary and cut around my template with a rotary cutter. As long as there's enough seam allowance it doesn't matter if they come out wonky!
I actually made a quilt a few years ago where I just had a template and cut out all of the hexagons from printer paper. They were able to be used over and over, and I had no trouble whatsoever. I’m kind of feeling dreamy about the idea of doing it with cardstock, like I would be in sewing heaven. I’m sure it wasn’t very much to get quite a good number of them off of Amazon. Sadly, that was my first time piecing a quilt by hand, and it’s now six years later and some of my seams are coming undone. Maybe for my next quilt I could do paper piecing again. It is actually going to be a quilt that has an optical illusion by using a medium hue for the middle of the block, and a dark and a light next to it to make it look like it’s standing out. Those would be easy to do with paper piecing. There you go again, giving me ideas.

In your last video of scraps your followers sent you, there were a few yo yo’ s. I remembered them from years ago, so I checked UA-cam, and sure enough many shorts and videos came up. However many of these are more modern projects than I remember. well hangings, purses, clothing, placemats, etc. I thought they would be a great way to use all the small scraps you received and would be a good project when you are on the road.
I love watching your process for how you chose which items to bring/which go together/which you wanted to work on this trip. I work with tin mostly, and it's a surprisingly similar process! Which ones look cool together? What part of the pattern do I want to highlight?
Tip: if you’re cutting your own templates… tea boxes are the perfect thickness and stiffness. The coating on the outside helps them last longer. Cereal box is too thick….
I actually bought the hexagon template you suggested. I got super lazy pretty quick and started only cutting squares I knew would be big enough to work with the templates. Once I basted the fabric on, I cut the excess material off at the corners where I knew the excess material might be a pain later on. The fabric I'm using isn't very thick, old t-shirts and left over quilting cotton stuff. My sister actually discovered that you can use glue to baste the fabric onto the patterns. The right glue isn't terribly strong and is easy to remove the fabric from the cardstock paper templates fairly easily. I fit everything I needed into a small bag maybe the size of a small purse and it's awesome for when in the car or if I want to have something to do with my hands that doesn't require a lot of brain power or like cross stitch does (plus anything above 14ct cross stitch fabric starts to hurt the eyes)

I love how this is coming out and I am so excited to see it complete! Paper piecing is something I have recently started and it is something I will stick with I think. I need to be in the right sort of crafty headspace for it (I usually have like 9 projects going at a time so I can pick and choose with my mood) but I am loving it so much.
So with my bigger scraps I usually cut in 1/2 inch wide strips and crochet rugs... But now I have a way to use my smaller scraps. Never thought about using my cricut to make the template.
I bought a wide stripe fabric for my first project. Mainly cuz I don't have the piles of scraps. It became a quilted table topper. A 3/4" hexi, that I made a star pattern with, including Moths. I bought a ream of card stock and a couple paper punches. I also recycle mailers. My current project is a QAYG template.
Have you ever tried a rotary cutter and small cutting mat? I resisted them for a long time but they really made my fabric cutting more precise and less tiring, even when cutting multiple layers. I've found the 45mm size rotary cutter to be the most versatile and I think cutting mats are as small as 10 inches, so easy to travel with (altho airlines will require the rotary cutter to be in your luggage, not carry-on... learned that the hard way).

So glad you saw that, the only bad news is that means that your fabrics were in the handful of packages I opened before I started filming it all, so you don't get to see my reaction to them 😢 I didn't have the 2nd channel back then, so I didn't know what to do with footage of me opening *everything* so I opened a handful of things before turning the camera on, and I'm so sorry, but also thank you so so much for your fabrics and thoughtful gifts!

I love hhand cutting quilt shapes. Made over two hundred quilts.All totally handmade. Made my first hexie quilt lqst year ofter more then 40 years of quilting.
Used to be that when doing EPP you would use paper, basting through the paper to the front of the fabric and when done with the project you would remove all of the basting, very tedious. Now we have card stock which makes it much easier to bast on the back of the fabric and no need to remove the basting, such a better plan, IMO
Maybe trying with some really nice thread and a proper needle, if you haven't already? I know for some people, that makes all the difference in the world!
I did piecing art work thing from time to time... never knew about paper piecing until your other video... that would have made what I was making so much easier to make 😅😅😅😅

Love EPP. I use freezer paper and put the waxed side up and then press the seam allowance on the wax side and it makes it much easier to stitch
As in you don't baste it at all, because the wax holds the seam allowances in place while you stitch?

I'm enjoying your sewing escapades so much! Having been a sewer for nearly 60 years, I've tried many methods of dealing with some of the dilemas that I see you experiencing on your channel. I just have to share this with you and your followers-there are multiple free hexagon generators on the internet. I've used one for several years, especially with tiny scraps.
Fun and a great tip! Do you print them out and cut by hand, or take it to a Cricut, or what?
@@ShannonMakes I printed them out and cut with the help of a ruler and cutting blade or scissors. I don't have a Cricut nor do I know much about them.
I love that I can use my cricut for my paper shapes. Etsy has SVG files made for the purpose, with guides for how to resize your shapes as needed. I am not proficient in any of the computer programs which might make it easy to draft up thirty degree diamonds exactly one inch on each side, and cricut design software is in no way equipped for that. When I prepare for a project, I make a "joined" shape with as many pieces as I can fit in an 11x11 inch square. The pieces can't be touching, or the kerf might eat into your pieces unevenly. I have several of these joined shapes saved for easy access later.
I sit on the bridge between the finicky fabric cutting, and the bulky seams of folded squares. for my two 1" hexagon projects, unless I am fussy cutting, I cut all my fabric into 2.5" squares. When I'm glue basting, I stick my paper to the middle and go through a batch and trim the corners off. I get a thrill from the tiny scraps heaping up, and then they all go into my stuffing bag.
Yes, I think the cricut is a handy tool for the EPP, that's for sure... I wish more libraries had them available for use/rent!

For my hexagon quilt, I made a template out of a clear lid to something or other and literally traced it on my fabric over and over and then cut out following the lines. It was really fast and easy - especially if I doubled or quadrupled the fabric. I was working with fat quarters, so it was not shifty at all.
I used a regular pen for light fabric, and a white acrylic gel pen for dark fabric. Since any marking will be on the inside of the quilt, I didn't care if I cut inside or outside the lines. Whoosh! So fast!

Press your thin paper templates to the side of freezer paper that has a shine (the plastic coated side). After they cool, cut your now thicker templates out with scissors. Thank you.
I know what you mean about the USPS. We had a check that was written to pay a bill, and it was delivered only half there to the company we were to pay. Yesterday, that company was nice enough to send us a letter which they enclosed the torn check and weaved the last fee for 30 days.

When I’m doing the cutting (I work almost exclusively with woven cottons) I will use a bit of template plastic, or the top of a croissant container or some kind of thin plastic that is transparent (all fussy cutting) to make my cutting template. I will add my minimum seam allowance (1/4”) to that template, then cut it out on the seam allowance line. Then I can figure out the placement I want and I trace it on the fabric with a sharpie. Then the cut lines are in the seam allowance, and I cut them slightly outside of those lines so I know I have enough space. It helps take some of the guess work out when deciding my placement on the fabric.
I’ve been working on an EPP quilt for the last 12 years or so, and it’s all collecting fabric and fussy cutting. I’ll email a photo of it
I use the finest thread to sew the hexies. The smallest sharpest needles. You can hardly see the light grey thread, it is almost transparent.

I am in the middle of a hexie EPP project that I started in Oct 21! (I also cut fabric for the hexies into 2.5” squares, works a treat!) I love the jewel/heart shape, I was planning to do a plus sign next but I just might change my mind. 😅

My grandma made her hexagons out of paper grocery bags. A little thicker and sturdier than regular paper and something she had great supply of.

My solution to the cutting out of hundreds of pieces has been to fold the fabric as many times as necessary and cut around my template with a rotary cutter. As long as there's enough seam allowance it doesn't matter if they come out wonky!
Yup, you can see that's basically exactly what I'm doing at many points, except with scissors!
@@ShannonMakes yeah! I've done it with both scissors and rotary cutter, and since i have chronic joint pain I found the rotary cutter to be easier.

I actually made a quilt a few years ago where I just had a template and cut out all of the hexagons from printer paper. They were able to be used over and over, and I had no trouble whatsoever. I’m kind of feeling dreamy about the idea of doing it with cardstock, like I would be in sewing heaven. I’m sure it wasn’t very much to get quite a good number of them off of Amazon. Sadly, that was my first time piecing a quilt by hand, and it’s now six years later and some of my seams are coming undone. Maybe for my next quilt I could do paper piecing again. It is actually going to be a quilt that has an optical illusion by using a medium hue for the middle of the block, and a dark and a light next to it to make it look like it’s standing out. Those would be easy to do with paper piecing. There you go again, giving me ideas.

In your last video of scraps your followers sent you, there were a few yo yo’ s. I remembered them from years ago, so I checked UA-cam, and sure enough many shorts and videos came up. However many of these are more modern projects than I remember. well hangings, purses, clothing, placemats, etc. I thought they would be a great way to use all the small scraps you received and would be a good project when you are on the road.
I love watching your process for how you chose which items to bring/which go together/which you wanted to work on this trip. I work with tin mostly, and it's a surprisingly similar process! Which ones look cool together? What part of the pattern do I want to highlight?

Tip: if you’re cutting your own templates… tea boxes are the perfect thickness and stiffness. The coating on the outside helps them last longer. Cereal box is too thick….
I actually bought the hexagon template you suggested. I got super lazy pretty quick and started only cutting squares I knew would be big enough to work with the templates. Once I basted the fabric on, I cut the excess material off at the corners where I knew the excess material might be a pain later on. The fabric I'm using isn't very thick, old t-shirts and left over quilting cotton stuff. My sister actually discovered that you can use glue to baste the fabric onto the patterns. The right glue isn't terribly strong and is easy to remove the fabric from the cardstock paper templates fairly easily. I fit everything I needed into a small bag maybe the size of a small purse and it's awesome for when in the car or if I want to have something to do with my hands that doesn't require a lot of brain power or like cross stitch does (plus anything above 14ct cross stitch fabric starts to hurt the eyes)

So with my bigger scraps I usually cut in 1/2 inch wide strips and crochet rugs... But now I have a way to use my smaller scraps. Never thought about using my cricut to make the template.

I bought a wide stripe fabric for my first project. Mainly cuz I don't have the piles of scraps. It became a quilted table topper. A 3/4" hexi, that I made a star pattern with, including
Moths. I bought a ream of card stock and a couple paper punches. I also recycle mailers. My current project is a QAYG template.
Have you ever tried a rotary cutter and small cutting mat? I resisted them for a long time but they really made my fabric cutting more precise and less tiring, even when cutting multiple layers. I've found the 45mm size rotary cutter to be the most versatile and I think cutting mats are as small as 10 inches, so easy to travel with (altho airlines will require the rotary cutter to be in your luggage, not carry-on... learned that the hard way).

Used to be that when doing EPP you would use paper, basting through the paper to the front of the fabric and when done with the project you would remove all of the basting, very tedious. Now we have card stock which makes it much easier to bast on the back of the fabric and no need to remove the basting, such a better plan, IMO
Every time I watch your paper piecing it makes me want to do it. The only problem is that I don't really like hand sewing. Lol!
Maybe trying with some really nice thread and a proper needle, if you haven't already? I know for some people, that makes all the difference in the world!

Old file folders work great for templates and I punch a hole in the middle so it’s easier to take out.
I cut squares, then snip off the corners as I go. I am cutting up an old moving quilt into 2.5" hexi batting pieces. I have 10 old moving quilts which I am going to use.

You could try plastic placemats to make highly durable templates
