I love that you dive into a new project without all the “professional” instructions. I tend to do the same because I love the learning/creative process. I am now going to have to give paper piecing a try because your project is so beautiful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing. ❤
Great idea as room divider. I have never heard of English paper piecing, but I love the look. I love that it is self contained and helps us small pieces of fabric.
I love English paper piecing, but I am English 🤣🤣 I have 3 EPP projects on the go at the moment. Love your channel Shannon,no matter what you vlog about. Thank care K🇬🇧❤️
Yay, I sort of managed to watch you in the middle of a U.K. forest. I would love to catch up as I have some skills at EPP and quilt as you go. Love what you have done so far Shannon. Love your vlogs, you remind me of me in my younger years K🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️❤️
But of course you know Kristine lol! Love her channel. Thanks for the introduction to this craft - I can really see how it's the perfect "traveling" project. Also, I can't see a time that I would tire of "Hobbit colors". They're like a big hug...
Not me pausing the video multiple times to see if my fabric made the cut....and then not remembering what I sent you! You've inspired me to try out paper piecing with my scraps (eventually)!
This is fun. I especially like the music. You might enjoy The last homely house. The lady who sews, crafts, quilts, knits and talks. She quilts in a way like you...go with the flow.
Yes! That colorway is gorgeous and super suited for you. Very hobbity indeed. I really like your friend's color choices too. Simple, clean, elegant. Kate at The Last Homely house hand quilts hers but of course she's making blankets - yours might not need quilting as it won't get much handling. Regardless, it's going to be very beautiful. Can't wait to see the backing!! Love your little wagon and your caravan is a nice comfy home away from home. Good for you. I love Denmark - so glad you enjoy it too.
This is so cool! I happen to be working on making basically a crochet version of this, stash-busting all of my old half-skeins from old projects by making a million little "granny-hexagons" and stitching them together into a big crochet quilt. It is so relaxing. Maybe I'll try this next 😊
I'm so with you about needing a hand project for when I'm sitting/waiting/queueing/idling for something! More often than not it's knitting for me, unless I have some finishing work to do on a sewing project. But second to that, you TOTALLY have to strategically match your project to the situation - ie no intricate lace or cable work if I'm at a social gathering, lest I end up having to frog back all my progress 😅😅 similarly no colorwork while waiting in the grocery line! 🤣 Very excited to see how your privacy screen turns out in the end! 🎉🎉🤓 I bet it's gonna be STUN-NING 😍
I inherited the EPP quilt that my mum’s birth mother had been working on when she died almost 60 years ago when she died and I have been teaching myself how by looking at what she had done. I have found some techniques which work better for me in the process so I have really appreciated the way you have approached EPP as well😊
Omgosh! Shannon, your EPP project is turning out so AMAZING! You have reignited my interest in this craft. I tried it years ago using old jeans. I made 2 - 3 row pieces and ended up stitching them together, back to back, resulting in a fun trivet or hot pad. Lol! I had no idea, what so ever, what I was doing. I just did it. Lol! I think if I were to use denim again for this type of quilting, I would use larger hexagons. And, I think I might turn them into a lined project bag for my knitting/crochet projects. Until next time, my friend, safe travels and happy crafting! ✌️💜🧵🪡
My first creative sewing was English hexagon patchwork, and my Gran joined in and we used to sew together on Sunday mornings. She loved it. 50 years later and I am taking patchwork up again to make a quilt.
Hi Shannon. Your channel, and your life, are both so interesting! It fascinates me to see someone filling their life with so much 'living'. Your work, travel, multiple crafts, fossicking, gorgeous pup, house renovating, second hand sourcing, decorating, and I'm pretty sure I've left stuff out, is all so interesting! I love that you're making the divider different on each side. The fact that you're using different weights of material for the EPP, I think makes it more fun and more as it would have been made originally. It's looking fabulous🎉. Thankyou for the vid and that wonderful scenery. PS Can't wait for the next instalment on the house. Loving it all!! Have a great day from Esperance, Western Australia💛👋
It's so cool that you're taking up English paper piecing. I love it for its portability the same as you do, I started a project also with one and a half inch hexagons during the beginning of the pandemic when I didn't have access to my sewing machine but I really wanted to sew. I keep all my supplies in a little coin purse the size of my palm and pull it out whenever I'm waiting. The one thing I found that made the most difference in how enjoyable the sewing is is to use a really good quality hand sewing thread. I've been using Aurifil 50 wt and it glides so smoothly through the fabric.
I love your hexagon project! Of course, I love hexagons too, but I think my love of hexagons started when my Mom showed me how to sew them together to make flowers for a Grandmother's Garden quilt. Great fun!
I recently found hundreds of paper piecing templates at my local thrift store. I had seen your video, so I bought them all. Now I just have to dig into my fabrics and start cutting and sewing. Thanks for the great idea and instructions!
Hi, paper piecer here, I use recycled paper but I use a cutting press! You can get various shapes and sizes of punch and it’s so helpful. If you use smaller pieces you can also find like scrapbooking stamp cutters, I have a couple for my 1/2 inch and 1 inch shapes. They are available for larger shapes but can be a bit of a pain to track down
buying the templates was smart! it's the only chance you have at consistent hexies. you made a smart investment in your project as well as your sanity! :)
I did my first English paper piecing this year too. I was pleasantly surprised, and I really enjoyed making one flower. Not ready to tackle a whole quilt yet, but thinking about making placemats.
Your hexagon pattern is beautiful and will look great as a screen in those frames. I can't wait to see you put it all together and then use it as a backdrop in your future crafting videos.
I made my second paper pieced quilt 31 years ago when we spent a year living in Ireland…for all the reasons you are! It was super smart of you to order the paper templates, because it is most important that they are a consistent heft and weight…in the olden days, I found the pages of the Laura Ashley catalog to be just right. Not too flimsy, so easy to get a sharp edge and very reusable, but not so stiff that it was painful to pierce the card stock. I found a thimble very necessary.
Inspiring to see how so many disparate fabrics can work together successfully! Thanks for the great tip about interlining fine or stretchy fabrics - this opens up a lot more possibilities 🎉
the inspiration! the camera angles! the BTS wow this video gives a lot. Thanks Shannon, I now too, because of you, have begun EPP. This has broadened my crafts and my youtube freinds.
I'm planning some crazy quilt style projects right now, and wasn't looking forward to piecing together fabrics in a way where all the perimeters match up according to my geometric vision without awkward corners or ripples ... And this just solved that for me! I can draw any geometric pattern of my dreams on a single paperboard piece, cut it out, and then use this method to shape and join all the sections before embroidering them down onto the backing fabric! Heck yeah! Thanks for the inspiration and of course the characteristically delightful video!
I have a whole bin of large-ish scraps intended to be cut into quilting squares for a rag quilt so I guess this my inspiration to get on that 😂 This is such a nice cozy stitching session, just what I needed to work on stuff today!
English paper piecing is so portable. I took some to the hospital with me to do after my surgery. They were a bit smaller than yours . I printed the hexagons from a page online but I did mine almost 20 yrs ago . You were much smarter getting the precut. Mine are still in a bag somewhere , unfinished. lol
You are adorable, Shannon! It's such a joy watching your videos. I love, "Hobbit colours are my sewing comfort blanket". I'll have to give the English Paper Piecing a go, too!
I love this! I may have to try it out for a late summer/fall project :) Also, quilt-as-you-go actually refers to stitching the blocks together while *at the same time* affixing them to the batting and backing layer.
What an awesome job you have that takes you so many different places around the world, and you can even take your dog. How cool is that. Regards Helen. Oh and by the way love your style of crafting, always good to watch your channel
What a beautiful peaceful looking place. I hands down thought it's gonna be a bed quilt. Pleasantly surprised. What a brilliant idea. How very exciting. Well done again Ms. Shannon beloved bless yall.
I have never heard of EPP. Now since I saw your video, I rushed to order these paper pieces. I love being able to watch TV and carry this. Project with me. I love being able to use my fabric squares/ scrapes. I got the same shape you have. I love your channel.
Dang it! I did not need a new crafting hobby and new project to pick up but when you said what you were going to make with the panels of EPP I was super inspired and now have so many ideas. Why did you have to be so inspirational and give me the desire start yet another project. Curse you, lol! But honestly I can’t wait to see the finished dividing screen when it’s done. I bet it’s going to look amazing! I was giggling at the end with the SW theme as you soared over the hexagons. Love your videos and can’t wait to see what other crafty thing you brought with you while your on contract.
I loved EPP when I was traveling a lot for work for the same reasons you enjoy it. For what it’s worth, the term you were looking for when you were talking about randomly-ish picking what hexi goes next is usually called scrappy. (I love scrappy projects too!)
Interesting. To me (personally) "scrappy" conveys simply that it was made using scraps, and doesn't convey any info about the way in which it was pieced together/the level of planning that went into it. Interesting that this is the chosen term for the technique
I made a ball for my little niece and nephew from English paper pieces. It's perfect for when they take trips. It's soft, so no breaking anything in the hotel room. And machine wash and dry. It's a favorite!
I think it would be perfect as a paravent ! It could also match and tie nicely with the other patchwork project you have for the house (like the sofa/chair you want to cover). I wanted to try quilting and patchwork for a very long time and I think that English paper piercing could be the best starting point so thank you for the inspiration. Oh and, as everyone else, I loved to see some bits about your circus job.
That is so lovely!!! That will be a super cute room divider! You could even stain the wood differently on each side to have it have two different vibes! I love love love love the hobbit colors!!!
Shanon, your video just gave me the perfect inspiration for sewing while traveling! Never thought of Quilting, but you just planted the right idea in my head! Thank you for that and your multicraftualy videos. Have a lot of fun in beautiful Norway
I love EPP. I started last year and it's so easy to get into and experiment just like you talked about. I had a very lovely friend use her cricut to cut out hundreds of hexagons for my current project. Your method is also very similar to mine. I love that everyone does it slightly differently because it's important for it to be comfortable for you while you're doing it.
I absolutely love that you are using the English paper piecing for the wood screen!!! It’s perfect!! And you have the perfect home for it!! Can’t wait to see the finished screen!! The setting where you are filming looks like perfection!! It looks like an expensive vacation destination. What a wonderful environment to be working and crafting. Cannell looks like she’s loving every minute of it too. Although she always looks happy. Especially when there’s water and sticks involved. Thanks for the lovely video.
I started EPP a few months ago and really enjoy the hand stitching, which I have almost no experience doing. Also, what a fun job you have as a performer. Looks so cool (and so difficult).
I love how 'mindless' this is. When traveling I tend to feel like garbage, especially in air ports, so while embroidery is a nice way to keep my hands busy it can be hard to have the mental energy to focus on making nice stitches or deal with mistakes. This is just basting and whip stiches with a single spool of thread. SO much easier to just zone out with which I adore. Bonus being I basically never fly alone so if I need to have it spill over onto my friend's lap a little bit while they read or play video games I know they wont mind.
I love the concept. My girlfriend and I are currently working on a big quilt that we're making out of fabric samples we found in an abandoned mall. This technique seems very similar to what we're doing with that, except we're just kinda eyeballing the whole thing. No paper to make sure it's perfectly shaped and aligned. I definitely think we'll try this out at some point.
Crafting should be sustainable, but it also needs to be accessable. Accessable physically, mentally, and in terms of time. I think you made the right choice buying the paper hexes 💜
😂 "Chronic Crafter" lol!! I'm stealing that! It is just a perfect description of you. While I love the look of EPP, I don't have the patience or temperament for hand sewing. I might try it for a small project. In one of the replies someone mentioned making a ball with this method, so maybe I will attempt that eventually. You are absolutely correct in your observation that not everyone reacts to things the same way, e.g. you find hand sewing relaxing where I find it a chore. I have recently picked up macrame (something I remember having a kit for as a child) and have found that tying knots in patterns is very relaxing for me. Again, not for everyone. I can't wait for your next video, whatever the subject!! I hope you and Phil and Canelle are enjoying Norway. Stay healthy and be happy!!!
Just watching you do what I have been doing recently. I also bought the paper templates. Life is too short to cut paper. I am making a blanket with mine. I watched with interest to see you sewing yours in exactly the same way and choosing colour matching in the same way. I look forward to seeing the next project. ❤
I definitely agree with you; give me just enough info to get started on a new type of project, and then as I need help, I will look for additional information. When I made my first quilt (pre-Internet), I did all the piecing on my own just from looking at quilts, and only looked at a book when I needed to find out how to put the layers together. Of course, I did already have basic sewing skills in place so I didn't have to learn from the ground up.
I absolutely love your video on paper Piecing. ❤I did it years ago and it was very soothing. I love how you are going to use it in the screen. What a fabulous idea, You will have the end product for your life.🎉
EPP is one of my favorites! It's a great way to use up scraps and have a small travel-friendly hand sewing project, exactly the thing you were looking for. And for all intents and purposes, I think the "find out as I go" method is perfectly suited for stashbusting EPP because it's kinda hard to mess up making a fun patchwork! Just put things you like next to each other in whatever order you please. The only "real" EPP tip I ended up learning after a while was to make a knot at every corner when I'm done with an edge so that if I break a thread or thread snaps under stretching (it happens sometimes with a kiddo!), the worst that happens is one hexi edge needs to be re-sewn. Happy stitching!
That is a nice tip! I was doing a double or triple stitch in the corners just because it kinda held it a bit more secure when I was bending the fabric to sew the opposite edges, but the knot is smart!
I did find that I could tell pretty well when I was sewing through paper. However, the better I got at only grasping two threads of each fabric, the less I had to worry about it. Also, it doesn’t matter if you go through the paper, when you pull them apart it just comes out.
Wow! Your timing is amazing 👍👍👍 I've had this on my mind for about a week but haven't got to go down that rabbit hole because of the time I would spend down it, and I haven't had that time to spend buuuut...... HERE YOU ARE with exactly what I'm looking for!!! Thank you Shannon 😁🤩🥳 Wishing you all the best for life, love, performance, sewing and crafting, and of course the furballs in your life 🙃🥴🤗 Love your channel, all the best from Australia 🇭🇲🦘🦘🇭🇲
The project is turning out beautiful. I really enjoy English Paper Piecing. I typically use 1/2" hexies, which is so fun. You could potentially make some smaller hexies and sew them into hexagon "flowers" to decorate some of the plain hexagons you've completed already. It's a great way to use the tiny leftover scraps. I will say that 1/4" hexagons are a bit of a beast, and if you're ever tempted to glue baste those, I didn't find it a good idea.
This! This looks like something that can fill in the tiny (and I do mean tiny) moments while I’m not chasing my two year old. Lol. Thank you so much for filming this. I have the perfect fabrics for it. Now. I need to go and get the templates. ❤❤❤
I finally understand how English paper piecing works. So l bought some shapes on Amazon. It’s perfect for just sitting and sewing a small project. I like the idea of not creating a pattern. Have fun in Norway. Maybe you will meet up with Arne and Carlos
Hi! I saw a cute EPP bowl on a UA-cam channel a month ago. Since then I've made two bowls and a mug rug. I've added applique and embroidery to the items I've made. I've forgotten how much I love hand sewing.
I started EPP after finding a pack of 1000 of those hexagon paper templates in a charity shop for £2! It's great for using those little fabric scraps that are too small for anything else, as well as those little bits of thread left over on bobbins after a project. I'm hoping to make a large blanket that will showcase my sewing journey with bits of fabric from all my makes over the last few years.

I love that you dive into a new project without all the “professional” instructions. I tend to do the same because I love the learning/creative process. I am now going to have to give paper piecing a try because your project is so beautiful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing. ❤
You are so welcome!
Great idea as room divider. I have never heard of English paper piecing, but I love the look. I love that it is self contained and helps us small pieces of fabric.
Yes, exactly! 🎉🎉
I love English paper piecing, but I am English 🤣🤣 I have 3 EPP projects on the go at the moment. Love your channel Shannon,no matter what you vlog about. Thank care K🇬🇧❤️
Wonderful!
They really are like a big hug!
Not me pausing the video multiple times to see if my fabric made the cut....and then not remembering what I sent you! You've inspired me to try out paper piecing with my scraps (eventually)!
Your "F around and find out" way of figuring out English paper piecing is also how I figured out quilting 😅
This is fun. I especially like the music. You might enjoy The last homely house. The lady who sews, crafts, quilts, knits and talks. She quilts in a way like you...go with the flow.
Love the Last Homely House! Shannon and Kate do have similar characteristics. I like to call it organic.
Love that!!
✌️💜🧵🪡
Thank you!
Shannon, I'm glad you didn't use the cardboard to cut out pieces. Extra bulk and hard work. Looking forward to seeing further successes.
Thank you!!
I love the organic look of your paper piecing.
Thanks 🤗 Me too!
I'm so glad I watched ALL the way to the end!! Phil and you singing the Star Wars theme, while doing the "run over" of the project - LOVE IT!! LOL
One should always watch to the end of the video... that's where I put the best parts!
Thanks!
Thank YOU!!
@@ShannonMakes You're most welcome:)
Great fun!
Fabulous, my mum used to make these, and I wasn't interested to find out how....but now I am...thank you very inspiring.
LOL, those birds at the end of your video, I was waiting for "ta gueule!" 😂
There were plenty of those too 🤣
I recently found hundreds of paper piecing templates at my local thrift store. I had seen your video, so I bought them all. Now I just have to dig into my fabrics and start cutting and sewing. Thanks for the great idea and instructions!
Oh, that's so fortuitous! Good find!
They are available for larger shapes but can be a bit of a pain to track down
Thanks for sharing!!
I envy you so much, being in Norway! It’s a place I have always wanted to visit.
🇳🇴🇳🇴
buying the templates was smart! it's the only chance you have at consistent hexies. you made a smart investment in your project as well as your sanity! :)
Very true!
I did my first English paper piecing this year too. I was pleasantly surprised, and I really enjoyed making one flower. Not ready to tackle a whole quilt yet, but thinking about making placemats.
I love how you did minimal research, then plunged in! This is amazingly inspirational for me, a recovering perfectionist. Thank you for the great vid
I have a video on the channel for recovering perfectionists! 😉
Oh my goodness. I think you just helped me figure out how I'm going to make my Halloween quilt!
Perfect!
Phil is right! It looks fantastic! Well done Shannon🎉❤
Thank you!
Your hexagon pattern is beautiful and will look great as a screen in those frames. I can't wait to see you put it all together and then use it as a backdrop in your future crafting videos.
Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
the inspiration! the camera angles! the BTS wow this video gives a lot. Thanks Shannon, I now too, because of you, have begun EPP. This has broadened my crafts and my youtube freinds.
Thank you, glad you liked it (and I assume you've seen the newer EPP video from last week, but if not, definitely go check it out too)!!
You're very welcome!
I have a whole bin of large-ish scraps intended to be cut into quilting squares for a rag quilt so I guess this my inspiration to get on that 😂
This is such a nice cozy stitching session, just what I needed to work on stuff today!
Yes, do ittt!!!
Excellent!
I love this! I may have to try it out for a late summer/fall project :)
Also, quilt-as-you-go actually refers to stitching the blocks together while *at the same time* affixing them to the batting and backing layer.
What an awesome job you have that takes you so many different places around the world, and you can even take your dog. How cool is that. Regards Helen. Oh and by the way love your style of crafting, always good to watch your channel
Thank you!
I absolutely love it! ❤ I need a new hobby like I need a splinter in my foot 😅 So much fun and I’d definitely like to try this sometime!!
LOL it is really fun tho!!
What a beautiful peaceful looking place. I hands down thought it's gonna be a bed quilt. Pleasantly surprised. What a brilliant idea. How very exciting. Well done again Ms. Shannon beloved bless yall.
I too thought "what else could it possibly be?"😂😂😂
The room divider is a great idea.
I have my Nana’s English Paper Pieced quilt that she made in the 40’s. I cherish it. ♥️
Love that!!
I have never heard of EPP. Now since I saw your video, I rushed to order these paper pieces. I love being able to watch TV and carry this. Project with me. I love being able to use my fabric squares/ scrapes. I got the same shape you have. I love your channel.
I love that! ♥️💙💜💚🧵🪡
🤣🤣
Love this! Stirred up a childhood memory of a blanket and pillow on my Aunt Pearl’s couch.
awww, lovely!
What a great idea!!❤️🤗🐝
So fun! Great great idea, and you inspired at least one other person in the comments to try something similar!
You have seen my crazy patchwork apron. I was wondering what to do next. It looks like I have found it. Thank you Shannon.
You're very welcome!
That is so lovely!!! That will be a super cute room divider! You could even stain the wood differently on each side to have it have two different vibes! I love love love love the hobbit colors!!!
Yes, was totally thinking the same thing!!
Shanon, your video just gave me the perfect inspiration for sewing while traveling! Never thought of Quilting, but you just planted the right idea in my head! Thank you for that and your multicraftualy videos. Have a lot of fun in beautiful Norway
You're very welcome!
Wonderful!!!
You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
I started EPP a few months ago and really enjoy the hand stitching, which I have almost no experience doing.
Also, what a fun job you have as a performer. Looks so cool (and so difficult).
❤😊oh I really love this. The easy on the go and getting to use up scraps❤😊love it. I was really glad that you showed pulling the paper out. 😎😎🤩🤩❤️😊
I'm so glad!
Yes, it's great to just kinda mindlessly craft and then all the sudden you're like "hey, this actually looks really cool!!)
I actually laughed so hard at the final scene I dropped the stitch marker I was holding between my lips! Thanks for sharing this project with us!
🤣🤣🤣 you're welcome!
Loved the Star Wars song with the fly over!
🤣🤣🤣
For just learning a new technique, the results look like you've been doing this for years! I love the screen filler idea.
Thanks so much!
Those clips saved my life when I started EPP!
I used my Sissix and a hexagon die set bought from Amazon to cut my hexie templates from scrap paper/card. Gamechanger!
Thanks so much 🤗 I bet there's a way to do something similar with the machine, but I don't know if that'd just be kinda... regular quilting?!
Yeah, I think you're right, it is regular quilting. 😂
Just watching you do what I have been doing recently. I also bought the paper templates. Life is too short to cut paper. I am making a blanket with mine. I watched with interest to see you sewing yours in exactly the same way and choosing colour matching in the same way. I look forward to seeing the next project. ❤
"life is too short to cut paper" ...I love that!
What a fabulous idea, You will have the end product for your life.🎉
Thank you so much!
I love English Paper Piecing 😊
I bought a Fiskars paper punch, makes perfect shapes.
Wow! Your timing is amazing 👍👍👍 I've had this on my mind for about a week but haven't got to go down that rabbit hole because of the time I would spend down it, and I haven't had that time to spend buuuut...... HERE YOU ARE with exactly what I'm looking for!!! Thank you Shannon 😁🤩🥳 Wishing you all the best for life, love, performance, sewing and crafting, and of course the furballs in your life 🙃🥴🤗
Love your channel, all the best from Australia 🇭🇲🦘🦘🇭🇲
Perfect! Glad it was helpful!
I am very much not tempted to glue baste, seems very unenjoyable to me! 😆
This! This looks like something that can fill in the tiny (and I do mean tiny) moments while I’m not chasing my two year old. Lol. Thank you so much for filming this. I have the perfect fabrics for it. Now. I need to go and get the templates. ❤❤❤
Thank you! 🤗 The templates that I used (and quite enjoyed) are linked in the description if you want to use the same one 😁
I do love my hand sewing!
However, your observations on the craft are spot on. Thank you for being an incredible explain-er!
You are very welcome
I started EPP after finding a pack of 1000 of those hexagon paper templates in a charity shop for £2! It's great for using those little fabric scraps that are too small for anything else, as well as those little bits of thread left over on bobbins after a project. I'm hoping to make a large blanket that will showcase my sewing journey with bits of fabric from all my makes over the last few years.
