So, having over 40 years of DIY experience, let me just suggest that now is an awesome time to make a house notebook. In it record what you did, before and after pictures are good and can help you document pipes, electrical etc., and any notes or quirks along the way. Because trust me, over time you will not remember. Then if you years later go to redo an area, you can refer. Or, if you need to find an electrical line, like in your floor, you'll know. We now do this for inside and out. Also in our last home, we left that book for the new owner and he was so grateful. Just my opinion.
Oh definitely, although I have the benefit of having every single nook, cranny, and work on the house being documented on video, so that's even better!!
Brilliant idea! I was actually thinking, "put a mark on the attic floor where those electrical wires rise from the basement" -- a whole notebook is even better.
It's a fine line between a salvageable project and trash, oft determined by a person's time and skill level. It's a wise person who knows where to draw the line.
I found the lamp! Yours is either a recast from the 1970s and vintage in its own right, or an original casting from the Frankart-Nuart molds made in the 1930’s. It’s titled Winged Victory, and originally had a leaded stained glass fan as the shade. 2:50
Enjoy yourself, Shannon! I am an old lady now, with PLENTY of stuff, but I do remember being young and poor and stalking thrift stores and used places for stuff I needed. LOTS more fun than shopping in a "normal" store. Enjoyed vicarious exploring and planning with you.
You might consider using Lucite rather than glass. It can be easily cut to shape and polished to a smooth finish. It's also safer, and comes in many colors to match your decor.
Throwing in a YAY for finally getting footage from above of Phil spinning the fluff in that trash can! That scratched a mental itch for me - loved how the dust swirled... 😅❤
I have a vintage sewing box. Even though I have a huge sewing/craft room, mine holds all my knitting and crotchet needles and gages that I am not currently using. And it functions as a small side table in my living room. The slim design works well in my living room.
You are my soul sister! Your comment "just what I didn't need" "well sign me right up because I don't have enough... What's one more?" could have come right out of my life 😂. You are officially in the club and working on one of many PHDs. 😮 Projects Half Done!
HAHAHA yes! At least, often, once I start a project, I tend to finish it. So it might sit around until the moment where I can dedicate some time and energy, but then once I start, often I see it through to the end (exceptions being long sewing or knitting projects that are so complicated that they take long enough that they bypass the knitting "season" because I only knit in winter)
What a treat to find your new video as a reward for doing a large grocery shop. Poor Canelle - our cat is so itchy she's licked a bald spot. The sewing box is smart, for containing supplies for a specific craft. PS - I really enjoy your hand gestures - they are so apt and elegant.
"But it needs work." "GIVE IT TO ME!" I saw that one coming. Though to be honest, if it's a sewing box or a trunk, I'd take it even if I didn't need it. But being realistic about your time, skills, energy and motivation (and perhaps also storage space) is important. I'm still working on that. I have entirely too many hobbies but I'm not giving up any of them. But I'm at least pretty good about my kitchen rule, if anything new comes in, something has to go out.
Hey Shannon, you could modify a gorgeous Chinese rice paper fan for that art deco lady lamp. It’s the first thing that came to mind when I saw that fabulous lamp. I’d love to see what you do with it. Warmest wishes from Australia. 🇦🇺
For the art deco lamp, I think I remember seeing them with a fan shape frosted glass. The ones I remember were pretty fancy but simple carved glass with brass edging. Texas Deb ❤️
If I recall correctly from growing up in Oregon, only postal workers are allowed to put anything in a mail box / PO Box. Couriers are not allowed to deliver to them. I live in Canada now and our small town only has P.O. Box delivery unless you live on a rural route. Couriers make it clear they cannot deliver to P.O. Boxes. I think P.O. Boxes for personal use is not as common, generally speaking, in the US. It took years for me to convince the IRS that they can't send mail to my house. On the flip side, don't get me started on the Amazon debacle when they decided briefly to only ship to mailing addresses meaning lots of Amazon packages got sent back by Canada Post because there were no P.O Box addresses on them.
Interesting! My cats were scratching and I knew they didn’t have fleas nor mites and I wondered if they feel the dryer air during winter. Thanks for the validation.
It would make a very nice little sewing table I've used them many times that the right height. Measuring tapes Harbor Freight used to have them for a buck a piece I have 15 million of them and finally used an Old Spice rack I set some of them inside of it and some can be clipped on the outside that is how I organized all of my measure tapes when they're all connected together.
For the lamp I would just add a bulb and buy one of those shades that clip onto the bulb. Then you can use it and search in antique malls and stuff for a glass shade. Those wooden "feet" are actually curtain finials. You get a wooden pole and screw them into the ends.
Oooh, that lamp is a SCORE! I see a sort of flat tulip; like a drawing made of glass. Center section flat, extra layer petal fused on each side Color to suit - I'd go with a frosted white but colors from nature would also work. Just thinking. Of all the things you've done so far, I suspect that insulation in the attic is 2nd only to the water remediation in the basement. The attic is really coming along and one day will be a terrific space; perhaps for a craft room, especially if you can put in skylights and other lighting. Not quite sure how your sewing table would get up there though.
Try cod liver oil for your dogs itchy problem, Omega 3 is important in supporting healthy fur and skin, and has anti-inflammatory qualities among other benefit
With all your hard work I would think you would end up with a warm and toasty house. Would love to know if it's true. House has gotten it's most inportant needs done for comfort and saving $$. Can't wait to see more of your creative house decorations. You so mimic my style. So I love seeing your ideas and how they come out. For me it's just fun, fun, fun. Until next week be safe and enjoy falls beautiful colors. 🫶
I was listening to the French band Cats on Trees the other day, and thought of you and Phil. There songs are in both French and English, which is nice because my knowledge of French is mostly Kitchen based lol but i figured if you had not heard them, you might like them and if you had heard of them, Aren't they so good? This has been the saga of the lamp's week for me, the weather got grey and dark here and i needed more light, so decided to raid my storage unit. Of which i found a lovely Midcentury modern floor lamp from my grandparents, which i think hails from the 1950s? And a desk lamp of the same era which needs some cleaning. Neither work in my space but i loathe to get rid of them because someday i will have my own apartment and room for them. what I have noticed about them however is how sturdy they are, like solid lol. I also have a early 1900s possibly older floor lamp that was my moms and I cannot wait to have room for that one, though it needs to be rewired. I would never fault you for not hoarding projects, having been raised by Depression Era grandparents and Mom who felt like everything was useful, and therefor precious, it all is just do you have time and energy for it?
For the lamp it looks kinda art deco, so something fan shaped in a gold/alabaster glass? for the wooden feet, I think they might actually be curtain rod finials.
Sometimes giving them safflower oil will help. If you have spots loose hair or a red and irritated you can shampoo your dog with dandruff shampoo it is probably yeastie time which is the same thing as standard on your head is two different kinds of yeast there is a warm moist yeast in pretty areas Etc and then there is standards that is on your head. I go to Dollar Tree buy a $1.25 bottle of champagne for 135 lb dog. It has exactly the same ingredients in it as head and shoulders. In between files because leonbergers you don't overly bathe at all no oils in their coat I actually just smear it on his spot and leave it go for a walk in the rain and it's handled. Trust me from experience of my dog when I first bought him home as a rescue and he lost all of his fur and his skin was raw and they gave him prednisone they gave himself all kinds of medications Etc I read online and this resolved my problems after 3 and 1/2 years of hell. I think I forgot to mention it is good to leave it on for about 10 minutes so this is when I give the ultimate massage and make bath time oh so sweet.
Just checking… you did mark clearly (and visibly from the un-modified attic space) where those cables are hiding? 4 years from now when they need the work done, it would be nice not to rely on memory to find them again!
Except Maybe old used leftover dark chocolate.... that should perhaps be unused, the lamp either originally had a fan or shell shaped glass, Im going out on a limb and thinking if you really wanted to a colored glass plate would even fit the bill until you decide to search out or invest in a "proper piece"
I have some experience in recovering lampshades and let me tell you, its not that easy. Basically fiddly picky work. I did use silk which im sure it made things more difficult but I would limit the number of lampshades you take on because they can be such time thieves.
would a suncatcher fit in the deco lamp? You might be able to find a pretty and interesting piece of glass made for that function that would work to diffuse the light.
Crazy idea! if you look online for stained glass window hangings or sun catcher, you should be able to find one that is thin enough to fit into that art nouveau lamp , AND stained glass is what was probably in there to begin with. Anyway as always ONLY an idea. I believe that is a Finial or topper rather than feet, but no reason you can't use it as feet if you wanted to! Yes Reading Rainbow! my kids loved it and STNG. LOL Confession, I have a collection of lamps (shades stored elsewhere) on one side of my fireplace, that I left there because it looks like weird art to me, rather than my weird collection of lamps. Post Office will hold your packages back if they dont fit in the box, and leave you a note. :) tho yeah probably better to send small things. Love your videos! have a great week! ZenHugs!
Love how relaxed Phil is on camera these days. I am probably being a bit dense here - but I don't understand why you cannot take heavy stuff across the border. Are customs duties not charged by value rather than weight?
Because I have to fit them in a suitcase. Each suitcase is limited to 23 kg, and more suitcases you have, more they charge you per suitcase. Already one extra is $50, I think the 3rd is $75 and so on, plus there's also a limit to how many suitcases I can manage to carry myself - I'm one person, traveling with a dog, it's already complicated enough without adding in 2,3,4 more suitcases and the additional fees that come with it.
I think the glass for that lamp should be fan-shaped and either amber or celadon green. That fashion plate is amazing. What's it titled, My Lady Disdain?
Hi Shannon, I enjoy your videos, and appreciate you sharing your life. Speaking from experience, you can forward your PO Box after you close it... Also, I live very close to St. Paul. How are you going to get the mail from St. Paul, when you are in Nova Scotia? Liz
I have a friend that is collecting it for me, and I will be sure to ask the post office if forwarding is an option... I do believe last time they told me that I was outta luck, and they don't do that, but I will definitely ask again!
Your videos are good for the soul. Your work ethic inspires me, l appreciate your honesty and l love all the shots of autumn colour, doggy fun and someone else's craft stash! Loved the arty concrete mixer thingummy spraying insulation shot too! For the art deco lamp, you might like to take a look at yesterday's (14 Nov) post ftom Escape to Rural France. Dan was cutting and soldering glass pieces and l think you could easily do the same with your own design, even if just as an initial fix. The sewing box l'd want to repurpose because they're difficult to keep stable IMHO when you use them - take out something heavy and you mess up the balance. The last of the lampshades you showed is crying out for some 60s sputnik design fabric! Last thought is about using plastic as a false floor for that insulation. I wonder if that will cause condensation issues? Also, would it be an idea to have flexible piping that draws the warm air up and, possibly, recycles it? Here in France they have these units that do just that, l can't remember their name, l call it an octopus. The pipes from the unit circulate air in the house from room to room. The pipes are like the kind you use as extractors to vent clothes driers.
So, having over 40 years of DIY experience, let me just suggest that now is an awesome time to make a house notebook. In it record what you did, before and after pictures are good and can help you document pipes, electrical etc., and any notes or quirks along the way. Thank you 😊😊😊 Fully agreed!
The art deco lamp would have a fan shaped glass, very art deco geometric shapes.
Yes, a fan shape is immediately what came to mind! For some reason I see it in my head with a jade green shade of glass!
@jaimehoward9506 or even heavily frosted with gold edging....
I initially thought fan-shaped, too, but then I could see the lovely figurine holding an opaque circle to mimic the sun or the moon
Oh but Shannon...we're ALWAYS here for the crafting as well as the house and of course Canalle!
Oh, if only everyone was!!
I found the lamp! Yours is either a recast from the 1970s and vintage in its own right, or an original casting from the Frankart-Nuart molds made in the 1930’s. It’s titled Winged Victory, and originally had a leaded stained glass fan as the shade. 2:50

Oh, I am 1000% enjoying myself!! 🎉🎉🎉
I think a shell shape or fan shaped glass would be really pretty in that lamp.
I agree with this based on the shape of the channel. A circle would be fun, like she’s holding up the moon.
You might consider using Lucite rather than glass. It can be easily cut to shape and polished to a smooth finish. It's also safer, and comes in many colors to match your decor.

Beautiful books. Appreciate you explaining regarding the lamp shade, although you didn't have to. So good to see progress on the attic.

Awesome video. it ended quickly 😢
