The BEST 3 dot iron sights and how to use them - and a cheap sight mod! (why 3 dot sights suck!)

  • We take a look at how you properly use iron sights, and my opinions on three dot sights. The truth is that 3 dot sights are not a very good sighting system. They cause more visual distraction than they provide benefit - and if you're using them to aim at your target - there is a great chance that you're being hugely inaccurate.

    Only one small pedantic correction: Bullseye shooters have a 6 O'clock hold on the black of the target ring. That way the black on black sights are against white paper and they can tangentially touch the bottom edge of the back to assure a perfect center hold (still using equal light/height) and they are set so that the bullet will impact the ~2-3inches high right in the X-ring.

    • @TheHumbleMarksman

      Eh true target sights set up for bullseye - sure - most sights from the factory will not be 6 o’clock

    Target shooting with blacked out sights is fine. Daylight with blacked out sights is fine. But dim light such as in a room, at night, with average light is another story. The night sights, (misnomer) will help to get a good, if rough, sight alignment and you can then put the front sight on the target and fire. If the light is so dim you can't identify your target, don't fire. Always make sure of your target and backstop.

    For carry "irons" I prefer Orange front and blacked out rears (Trijicon HD). One point about fiber optic front sight (especially in competition), the coating around the fiber optic will get dirty and scratched fairly quickly, so changing the fiber often can really help in picking up the crispness. A gunsmith showed me his trick, (fingernail clippers) to easily cut the old fiber from sight as well as trim the replacement before melting the ends.

      Its a tragedy to use sights in a gunfight...but thats my experience...anyways what about the blacked out back with the one dot in the middle ,for target practice of course...wouldn't that be easier to aline an 8(two dots)or one dot with absolutely no reference to where you front sight should be EXACT!! ?

    @donaldweber7636 2 роки тому +15

    My preferred pistol irons are three dot. And yes, I know the dots go away when using a WML. That doesn't bother me because my sights are now just notch and post, which are still easy to use. I have tried blacked out rears and I can't get the front and rear aligned as I have no reference as to where the front dot is supposed to go. Blacked out target sights are easier for me to use than just a blacked out rear.

    The only small reasons to go with night sights I found is they can help get the sights oriented in the dark before hitting the weapon light. Finding the gun in the night stand in the dark. Or in the rare case you have a pistol silencer with regular height sights. In low light you can line up the sight with 2 or 3 dot night sights.

I can't support, advise, or agree with something I haven't tried myself. Personally I've enjoyed the multi colored 3 dot sights for night shoots if I'm using irons. However in the daytime, I've noticed a huge improvement with blacked out rears. Sight alignment is so much faster, which in turn makes me faster on the gun. However, defensive target acquisition shooters are not as interested in an “X” shot, but a target mass hit and defensively within 30 feet (10yds) and very quickly. Sights that are optically up and in front, not having to search for the sight either front post or rear slot (the window). I have a-platform for target precise as I can performance, but my carry is sighted for quick on mass acquisition and followups regardless of ambient lighting. You simply blew off "big dot" sights referring to these as "not a winner". However, they seem to be the only sight configuration offering a real solution to what you've described in this video. I've found that even the figure 8, dot on dot sights still have to dissect the target with equal height and light just as the three-dot sights you've condemned here. Although figure-eight sights are far less confusing at night and when moving for sure. Can you perhaps just explain why there appears to be no true "winner" with iron sights on a pistol. I'm curious if any of these iron sight varieties really matter or if we should all have mini-rds sights milled into the slides of our pistols allowing for that 30-meter headshot we'll need to be executing in stressful self-defense situations. Minus point shooting, I have yet to find anything as simple and more accurate than the XS DXT2 sights allowing for lightning-fast hits on a target within the statistical defensive shooting distances 49 feet and as near as 3 ft. I couldn't agree more, there are far better options available to us than three-dot sights yet they arrive installed on nearly every pistol I've ordered over the past 20 years. Thank you for making the vid.

      A set of sights that allows you to easily target focus is best- so high vis front blacked out rear is probably “best” - I am not familiar with the makes of big dot sites but the dangerous game sights Yaeger was pushing for so long dramatically reduce precision. RDS are superior to irons - that would be my first preference.

    My Glock 45 came with Ameriglo H3 w00, set. It’s a U notch and my groups are all over the place. Mostly never a bullseye even with, 12 hold, combat hold, or 6 o’clock.
    I qualified for my conceal carry with the trainers Glock 45 so that’s what l bought, because l felt comfortable with it. My groupings were good at 3, 5 and 7 yards.
    But l can’t get on target with my gun. Even when l have a good sight picture. I don’t know if it’s because of a lack of stock sights.
    I feel like the rear site might not be milled exactly straight. As l look too down at the rear there seems to be more metal on the right side than the left.
    I’ve tried to measure the distance with calipers but can’t get a definitive reading to confirm. But eye balling it, my OCD is telling me it isn’t a hundred percent straight.
    I’m a new shooter, but l’ve got about 500 rounds through this gun, but can’t consistently place my shoots on bullseye. Even if l try to make sure the front and rear sights are level before breaking the shot.
    I was shooting low and to the left, when l first started,but now it’s just mostly low and all over. In the middle, but low and Swiss cheese like despite aiming for a bullseye spot in the middle.
    I’m going to try these tips. Next time I’m at the range.

    I've never been told to line up three dots at the expense of equal height equal light. Equal height equal light always comes first, and that's why the front dot on my M&P's are not perfectly lined up. It's a smaller dot being further away, and the bottom of the dot is higher than that of the two rear sights. If someone is lining up 3-dot sights neglecting the posts, they're just doing it wrong. You have to consider that Ameriglo, Trijicon, Truglo are going to use the same sights for a 3.42" barrel of a G26 as they are the 4" or 4.49" barrel. In each case the dots are going to line up and look different because the front dot will look smaller on a pistol with a longer sight radius. That said, I prefer Ameriglo i-dots, XS Standard dots, and Glock Bold Sights. All work very well. I do have some Ameriglos on my PX4 with a tritium square, blacked out rear, and a slim rear profile. They they were serrated they'd be my favorite.

In the service we were trained to shoot the light. Even if I can’t see you, I can see your light and I’m shooting the light until it’s not moving any more. Hi! I have a poor eyesight. which sights would be more visible and what would you recommend?

    • @TheHumbleMarksman
      @TheHumbleMarksman  4 роки тому +4

      The absolute best sight for someone with poor eyesight is a miniaturized red dot sight (MRDS) - such as the Trijicon RMR, Holosun 507C/407CO/508T. If you have an astigmatism that makes the dot grow in size - you'll do better off with a bigger, dimmer dot, I personally really like the Leupold Deltapoint Pro with the 7.5 MOA triangle reticle and the Holosun 407CO - with an 8 MOA ring. Something about the larger shape means you don't have to rely on brightness to notice the dot as much. Both the Triangle and the Ring do not blister as badly. The Holosun 507C/508T have a 2 MOA dot with a 32 MOA ring - this is actually probably the most intuitive sight for people learning the dot because the huge ring allows you to see if the dot is wandering off the screen. Check out the links in the description of the video. For skinnier guns for concealed carry - the Holosun 507K is a good choice.
      So shooting iron sights requires you to have basically 3 focal planes: The front sight, the rear sight, and the target. I have bad eyesight myself - until I got it corrected - but my speed of focus isn't amazing. The red dot simplifies this process by allowing you 1 focal plane - the target. You focus on the target - which is what you naturally are going to want to do anyway - and then you "see" the dot as you move it around onto the target. Once it's where you want it you pull the trigger. The other benefit of the red dot is it's a magnificent training tool - if you're observant you can see how the dot moves through your trigger pull - you can use that feedback to tune up your grip to attempt to stabilize it. Not to mention they make sighting the gun a lot easier. With an iron sight gun my groups are about 2x as large as my groups with a red dot gun at the same distance.
      While red dots add a bit of hassle to the pistols - they absolutely increase the competency of most shooters once they grasp the basics of how to use them and accelerate the rate at which you learn to be a better marksman.

    I've just begun shooting and do well with 3 dot sights. From 3 yards (Glock 48) - 19 rounds in a 2 inch circle; 3 rounds in a 1 inch circle. From 7 yards (Walther PPQ) - 10 rounds in a 4 inch circle. Yes that first time at 3 yards the 19 single shots had plenty of time between shots to aim. The 3 rounds were probably in 5 seconds. The second time shooting at 7 yards all 10 shots within 10 seconds. Slow but not bad for a beginner. Maybe it is beginner luck.

    • @TheHumbleMarksman
      @TheHumbleMarksman  3 роки тому

      That's awesome you are digging in. At 3 yards - all the holes should be touching - if you move the target back that 2" group becomes a much larger group in a hurry. I don't say that to discourage you but to give you a standard to work towards. What you have now is effective out to maybe 10 yards - but the time aspect becomes a question - if that's unlimited time what can you do with compressed time? Again - I'm not trying to suck the wind from your sails - what you're doing is awesome - simply suggesting working toward an objective standard. the NRA B8 style target is awesome - if you can keep all the shots in the black at a given distance - that's pretty good - see if you can get that distance to be closer to 25 yards.

    Not all handguns are Glock, and not all come from the factory zeroed for center hold (top of sight post as the point of aim like THM demonstrated).
    SIG ships most of their fixed-sight handguns zeroed for a "combat hold", where you place the front sight dot on the target, not the top of the sight post. You're meant to shoot "both-eyes-open-focus-on-the-target-not-the-sight", and while not precise, it's fast and allows for more awareness.
    It's basically the same single focal plane concept as using a red dot, but needs the three dots somewhat lined up because of parallax.
    So if you think you need new sights for your SIG because it's shooting low, think again. :)
    Not all of us aspire to be a pistol marksman, we're satisfied to be a humble hitsman.

      You are talking about developing an index - and index shooting the 3 dots are especially damaging especially if you know how to “shoot the notch” - timing the front sight coming down from recoil. With a high vis front the irons become a red dot - effectively- assuming a good index
