And yet it so nearly didn’t happen. The original Swedish entry was dropped after getting into legal troubles and the Swedish network approached ABBA to fill in; having failed to make the cut the previous year, and feeling pretty unhappy about it, they were initially reluctant, but their record company “persuaded” them to go for it.

Back in the day all the music at Eurovision was played by the same orchestra with each act supplying their own conductor; ABBA’s came on dressed up as full Napoleon and brought the house down with a mixture of laughter and cheers. With hindsight I’d love to know what score they got from France 😂

In the early '70s, very few musical groups were making videos for their songs. Benny and Bjorn figured out early that music TV shows would play these clips and promote their songs. Since ABBA was an international group, these clips were played all around the world and helped make the band even bigger. It was a brilliant move, since was a whole decade before MTV.

Must say I was disappointed when I realised. I hope they react to the video so we still see a reaction even if it isn't the first time they heard it. Loved Luca's appearance today to, so adorable.

      @Marianne_321 29 днів тому

@@MIKECNW I never said she was an expert. Just that with Abba, Dancing Queen seems to be the groups best known & most popular track with the public & judging by Amber saying that 'everyone knows Dancing Queen' beforehand (when they reacted to another video). that it could be the one track they already knew from Abba before reacting to other tracks which they didn't know.
People constantly ask Amber & Jay in comments whenever they do an Abba track to react to Dancing Queen & they haven't so far & I suggested it could be because they already know it so can't give a genuine first reaction of the song. However while (possibly) knowing the song they may not have seen the Dancing Queen video, so could react to that & in this way it would still make many who want to see their reaction to that song happy.

My wife drove me crazy with Abba for so long, and being a rocker since the 60s, I certainly wasn't on board with Abba! It really didn't matter to her, she'd just tell me to go to my 'Man Cave' if I didn't want to hear it! And she was right. Lord knows I drove her crazy with my rock. Sadly, I lost her to cancer three years ago, and I must admit, Abba never sounded so good as this reaction. Thank you for reacting to this song (which was one of her favorites), and giving me a little time spent with my wife again.

"Waterloo" (1974) is one of my favorites, and is in my Top 5 of all ABBA songs
(with S.O.S. , Dancing Queen, The winner takes it all & Don't shut me down)
and I think that is the song that change history,
not only for ABBA, for Sweden and Eurovision too
"Waterloo" was the song that ABBA wrote especially to participate
in the annual Eurovision Song Contest
By the rules of the competition the songs could not exceed 3 minutes (that its 2:46)
    and ABBA made a masterpiece!
ABBA sing it in Swedish, for the local selection in Sweden (February 1974)
and finally ABBA sing it in English in the final held in England (April 1974)
before 16 interpreters and songs from all over Europe.
"Waterloo" and ABBA win Eurovision for the first time for Sweden
It will be Their first big worldwide hit: #1 in UK and half Europe (also South Africa),
and Top 10 in U.S., Canada, Australia , New Zealand and the rest of Europe
    ABBA recording "Waterloo" in
    swedish, english, german and french
Several years later, in 2005, to the 50th Eurovision anniversary,
"Waterloo" was chosen as the Best Song in all the history of Eurovisión
i hope you have a nice week
    Kind regards from

This brings back childhood memories, The UK was hosting the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974, and for the first time, I was allowed to stay up late to watch the entire annual Eurovision Song Contest. The rules of the contest at the time the performers whether solo or a group/band had to perform with a full orchestra. So ABBA
had their Swedish conductor dressed as Napoleon, i remember the excitement as the International juries votes came in. ABBA won the contest for Sweden, launching the group on the International stage.

I like to do a "blind" listening to the songs prior to the competition if I can (since most songs are released ahead of time), I pop them into a playlist, set it to shuffle and don't look at the names of the artist/song/country...etc. I just assign each a number, rate the songs and check to see who did what afterwards. It's really interesting, as even if they do sing in their "native" language it's not necessarily always obvious who sang what (i.e. French is common to several countries and a song can be sung in any language really, regardless of which country the representing singer is from).

Another great song of theirs is So Long ( see you honey ) , which doesnt get the recognition for how good it actually is . A bit of history about ABBA is that it wasnt the first time ABBA tried to enter Eurovision. In Sweden they have what is called " Melodifestivalan", where the people of Sweden pick the act they want to represent Sweden at Eurovision. In 1973 ABBA entered Melodifestivalen with the song Ring Ring and finished in 3rd place with just 8 points and 29 points behind the eventual winner. Then we all know what happened the next year, ABBA won the competition with a staggering 302 points , 89 points ahead of the 2nd placed artist

Please please please, for movie night- MURIEL'S WEDDING; it's full of Abba music and about a young woman who's at a transitional time in her development, who lives by what Abba music says. It's a mid 80's film and it's Toni Collette's debut and she kills it as Muriel. It's a beautiful and perfect independent, small budget, film that won many Awards in Australia. Please enjoy it some evening.

I was 9 years old when ABBA won the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson with Waterloo and their music grabbed me and hasn't let me go to this day.
The style of their music is unique. They can be fast and powerful but also slow like with Eagle, which is a slower track, and this changeability was always what set them apart and you could always tell in the music what mood they were in when writing and composing .Abba were unique, something like that will no longer exist and that's why their music will accompany us for a very long time and inspire other artists.

Since most of the Scandinavian countries are celebrating ABBA's 50th anniversary these days, I thought it might be a good idea for you to make a reaction to "ABBA: The Movie". It's a movie shot during their trip to Australia and the managers idea was to make a movie, without the ABBA members being aware of it, the only "actors" were the "journalist" and a "bodyguard". The ABBA members were told, the cameras were for for a documentary...It's a feel good movie, that really shows, how big ABBA was in Australia. Australia opened ABBA's road to fame, after the win at the Eurovision Song Contest, their music was refused to be played on air, since they were written of as a one hit wonder, as most of the Eurovision winners. Even in their native Sweden, they didn't get any air time for a year and a half, until the Australian tour, when the UK opened their eyes for the ABBA mania, which was followed up by 19 consecutive ABBA hits!!!

The four ABBA members were all well known in their homeland with previous chart success so they were a kind of Swedish 'Supergroup'. But they faced obstacles in breaking out from their domestic scene. That's why they took the Eurovision route. To get international exposure. It's estimated that up to 500 million TV viewers saw them win with this song. And I think a lot of older ABBA fans can recall when they performed. You could tell they were a bit special.
