As a 90s baby, these definitely have a soft spot with me. I was around them as a child, my Grandparents had one, as wall as my best friends Mom. I have owned and repaired several of the over the years. I currently have two, one from 1998, and one from 2001, however we have a house with hardwood floors so they never get used obviously. Still like them though.
Sentimentality does not mean performance. Your grandparents could have owned a Volkswagen. You wouldn’t own one as a family car, would you? NO. They are fun, stripped of the body and given an old school bus seat for a dune buggy. Why? Because they’re terrible as family cars. Take sentimentality to the dump when it’s simply bad for your health and DO NOT live-up to modern standards of quality.
Just bought me a (ligthly used one) today off e-bay, been using the self propelled hoover for over 20 years NOTHING is better then the self propelled vacuums imo
Great video. I have this vac and have never found another vac that equals its suction power. My self-propel isn’t working. I’m going to replace the belts and hope that does the trick. Like you mentioned, it’s not good to lift it up by the handle which I have done.
Great job servicing the hoover! I had one just like that, they are very good for carpet cleaning. They do go through bags like crazy though. Definitely more serviceable then most machines on the market today.
I had one of the first models that they came out with of this design. I actually loved it! For the time period 90s 00s it performed amazingly. I maintained my vacuum so that it always worked like new. I hated changing the belts however
Interesting. I have this old vac, still use it, and do maintenance on it. I do use the gasketed Envirocare HEPA filters. Never seen any dust come out the machine, but I might not be looking well. A review by VaccumWars "Hoover Anniversary WindTunnel Self-Propelled Review U6485900 " lists it as very good on particle filtering.
I had one for twelve years back when I had wall to wall. I no longer have synthetic materials in my house and even my floormats have natural jute backing aside from my area rugs being wool and having either jute or cotton backing. I don’t want to breath in plastics in my house. The wool rugs are why I have to have soft bristled vacuums.
Also wanted to add that I prefer the Hoover tempo much more than these, in fact I just picked up the commercial version of the tempo and love it so far.
Mine never leaks - I use the Hoover HEPA bags that do have a gasket. Your bag is too full! You can never use the paper ones. Mine has been in the shop 3 times since I bought it when it first came out. It does a great job, BUT: 1. It is SO loud. I wear earplugs rated 33 decibels to be able to stand it. 2. It is very hard to manuever, and takes real effort to turn. 3. The attachments tend to fall off. 4. That full bag indicator never worked. The tester at the store had an overflowing bag and still that light wasn't coming on. 5. Even when it is completely flat, it is still too high to fit under the majority of my furniture. 6. The hose is too short. It makes it a real struggle to use the attachments without tipping over the vacuum, which is easy to do.. All that said, I appreciate the cleaning tips! I really can't wait to get the white marks off mine.👍🏻
Thank you for this thorough video. I just brought this vacuum home for $8 from Goodwill and thought it was pretty new. The first thing that caught me up was the roller didn't spin when I turned it on. Thanks for explaining the recline position activates it. You never did say what bag to get though you did say stick to Hoover. I can call the number on the vacuum. Mine had the Y/Z with it too.
Your video was very helpful. I used my Kirby to blow it out because I don’t have an air compressor but I used the blower tool on it and it seem to work pretty well. I also used it on vacuum mode to suck out some of the cobwebs on it.
Not that I don’t already know based on the stage 2 filter that dust comes out the exhaust, or could, but cramming the full bag back in the housing without properly attaching it, then turning on the vac to say, “See all the dust that comes out?” is just silly. Of course dust comes out! You crammed a full, filthy bag back in the housing without attaching it!!! Very helpful video otherwise though! 😃
Really nice job. I picked up a lot of pro tips. Thank you! That headlight looked like a quartz halogen, which are allergic to skin oil. I always install them using an alcohol-dampened towel as a glove. They last much longer that way.
My mom's had one of these for 13 years. She took amazing care of it. It's had carbon genuine Hoover Y HEPA gasketed bags in it since day one and the bag compartment is remarkably clean as a result. All it's ever received are bags, filters, and belts. Today, I discovered that the idler pulley cracked so I'm going through the process of replacing it. I noticed the last time I replaced the agitator belt that the agitator would not fully disengage when in the upright position, causing a horrible noise. Most likely, is this a result of the failed idler pulley, or could something else be wrong? I'm surprised it broke because all the bearings are perfectly fine since they're all shielded.
I have a Hoover portable vacuum & Hoover dial o matic vacuum and I did noticed that they don’t have gaskets on the bag collar like like you had mentioned but I haven’t noticed any leaking dust coming out of the exhaust ports of the vacuum.
I have one of these that is 12 or more years old. It still works fine but I was wondering if I should invest in new filters, belts, and roller brush or get a new vacuum cleaner. I love the self propelled aspect of this thing. Great video and thanks for making it.
Well you can get a vacuum that is self-propelled from Hoover anymore. Maybe there are some left in a Amazon where house ? I would definitely change all of that stuff
The carpet hight adjuster is a common failure point I’ve found. The little plastic piece under the that sliding lever likes to break where it engages with the hight adjust mechanism. Unfortunately I don’t think I have ever had any luck finding that part. Edit: It might actually be the brush roll toggle that likes to break, I know it’s one of them lol.
I still have this vacuum and it works great, well it did until the cord was chewed by the new puppy. Do you have any video's that show power cord replacement for this model?
Great vid man, ive picked up so many of these and refurbed them.. The bagged one is the best compared to the bagless version. We had the bagless version which replaced a Panasonic Jetflo which was a much better machine. I HATED emptying the dirtbin on it, especially that damn filter that had to be pounded against the inside of the trash can while outside, such a junk design. I have a year 2000 one of these, in dark green, It needs some more work done to it, both wheels are worn out around the axles, some plastic bits need replacing but the motor is nice and healthy. These are ok, much better than alot of what is available today but agree they are a bare minimum machine as far as quality is concerned.
Hello Techman, The plastic that holds the idler has cracked and broken its the wind tunnel 6.0 self propelled. I can glue it on however what kind of bond really work to hold the pressure of springs. and belt pressure.?
One day this vacuum started to suck down to the carpet ans stop roller from the suction and stall the power drive. Also carpet height setting seems not to retain but stepped adjustment part is not broken. What position should the switches be set to when re-attaching top cover? Its like the case sits to low. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Is it ok to clean with soap/water and/or 409 if you don't have compressed air? I haven't finished the video, but will because i just replaced both belts, but having problems with the self-propel and roller. Will look for cracks in the belt area. Mine is over 18 years old, but i like this vacuum. If I have to replace, any suggestions on a good "bagged" vacuum. I'm not a fan of the bagless ones.
I cleaned the drive shaft and changed the belt. Suspect I cleaned spindle bright. Now I think there was abrasive epoxy and not rust. Now the belt slips and burns up. Any ideas?
The main maintenance thing that I HATE about the Self Propelled Windtunnels is the larger drive belt. For me they are mostly easy to take apart, but they are a total pain in the ass to put back on!
I need help with my hoover self-propelled anniversaries is that the dirty and clean light keep going back and forth and I clean the sensor and it still does it I don't know what going on with it if you can help me that would be great.
Hi. Great video. I have this vacuum. Maybe you can help me... When the vacuum is in its locked upright position, there is quite a bit of play. The vacuum will rock back and forth. Is there a way to tighten this up? I thought it was a bad foot release lever, so I replaced that with a new release lever, but it still seems "loose". Not talking about the self proper mechanism.
It's the lower base in the main body that gets worn. Not parts that are easily replaceable though these machines are old enough you probably shouldn't plan on daily driving these at this point.
Thanks! Just realized the power drive cord (looks like a bicycle's brake cable) has been completely broken in half due to yanking it up from the handle versus the "carry handle". Going to order the part and get that fixed. Did you do a video on replacing the power drive cord? Any tips?
I would definitely love to have one of these machines as it’s an interesting machine. Definitely a thumbs up my friend. Halfway through the video I was thinking, did he just come back from Karate class or just come back from a shower 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Lovely vid as always.
My brush KEEPS spinning- even when upright. Even if on “hardwood floor”, even if it’s not moving. It keeps spinning. How do I fix this, please? Thanks.
@@PerformanceReviews their windtunnel 3 vacs actually promise they don't lose suction unless there's a clog and it's also nice that a system check indicator got equipped on their machines also not a big fan of the selfpropelled as the rod that controls the self-propelled feature.
I'm getting a horrible grinding noise in the upright position that goes away when I tilt it. Seems like the main belt is grinding. I've replaced the belt and I still get grinding when it is fully upright. Any idea what needs to be adjusted to remedy this?
Typically you should change the rubber flat belt every three months or so on this machine. if you're going through belts way more often than that. Bring it to your local repair shop they should be able to fix it.
Didn’t know I was going to get a dissertation on the vacuum I owned Haha! Nevertheless one of the things you said in the video helped me realize that I just needed to get a new one. I replaced the belts and the groove on the brush spinner thing had indeed lost its grooves.

Wait till you try a central vacuum that's light enough it doesn't need to be self-propelled. 😁
Great video. I have this vac and have never found another vac that equals its suction power. My self-propel isn’t working. I’m going to replace the belts and hope that does the trick. Like you mentioned, it’s not good to lift it up by the handle which I have done.

We need more of guys like this, and fewer know-nothing "influencer" types.

Remember you can't see most dust. When testing one of these things with a laser particle counter they bring it very far up.
My friend has one. I’ve used it and it’s nice to have the onboard tools but it isn’t built the way that the Concept 1 was.
No Bruce that's a no concept one. It's starting to look like that's going to be the vacuum of the month next month.

The plastic that holds the idler has cracked and broken its the wind tunnel 6.0 self propelled. I can glue it on however what kind of bond really work to hold the pressure of springs. and belt pressure.?
The housing needs to be replaced and then. No glue is going to hold. Go to your local vacuum store and order housing.
Lovely, thank you will search out a distant vacuum shop the local closed dowm.
When do you think sealed systems started becoming more common?
Yup, looks like it's got the "Hoover lean"!
What is your opinion on these? I own several and they have been very reliable besides the belts and rocker switch issue
Your workshop is so clean you can work in a white bathrobe! 👍

The small belt on my wind tunnel is very slack a new belt didn't help so I assume that there is an adjustment
