      I really liked this vid. Really good review in layman's terms, especially letting the viewers know a new version/model coming out this year, which most would not know. I've seen some of your other vids, Really like the Japan fishing one recently, and seen you with Vic from landshark.....so I've subbed...also have seen some of Allen hawks reviews...he is one in-depth dude.....that's a good thing. Can't wait to catch up on your previous vids. Tight lines 😎

      stella is crap.. the makaira is a better reel for hundreds less.. for many hundreds less, though heavier, the cabo will outlast the stella if I had to guess... for the money, the Ecooda Hornet is pretty damn good, actually, if all you are doing is vert jigging or live bait work.. just saying..

    I think that twin power is more interesting than stella because:
    1) TP have aluminum body who is more unbreakable than stellas magnum body
    2) price

    You are so right about the areas on the Stella having play in them for the price point shouldn't be any play to be honest I have owned Shimano products and I was caught up in the Shimano hype until I touched a Daiwa... much more Superior product. The reels are built more solid have a sturdier feel have a more quality feel

  • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
    @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 5 років тому +4

    Super thorough review. I especially liked where you went over the play in areas where you wouldn't expect it. That makes me wonder if the reel is as watertight as they claim it is. Also, the plastic parts. Interesting facts about the 30000 being the same components as the 20000 with only the outside components changing, I could see how that could wind up with gear damage, especially if your targeting monsters. Hope your Japan trip is going well. Take care. Until next time, tight lines & good vibes.

    I have Saltiga 2015 model and Stella sw 2013 model.I have to say than saltiga feels like tank in all the ways.It also has better drag in smoothness .Stella is like plastic has play almost everywhere .It feels like a saragosa sw.I regretted buying stella over Saragosa.On the other hand Saltiga worth all the money i spend.

    I am not sure if it has already been mentioned by somebody yet but the small amount of play disappears under load is most likely there for a calculated reason. Because all materials have a certain amount of flex/squish, and with the huge forces applied upon a spinning reel when fighting mega strong/heavy fish, that "play" allows gears to mesh better and things not to grind on themselves. Imagine it was made using ultra tight clearances between parts, then all that force is applied...the parts (especially meshing of gear teeth) would be actually pushing on each other and it would feel rougher, tighter & less smooth -than if the clearances were there to start with before loads are applied. Among other similar systems I installed motorcycle sprockets (chain drive gears) & chains for years as a motorcycle component technician and I would never install things that roll/move under heavy load super tightly, or with no room for "give". I have also installed and maintained many of Shimano's push bike gear systems- and there is engineered tolerances, movement & flex in these gear systems- that work under load also. Hope that might give you some answers? but yes cheap products do have unintentional "slop" between rolling/moving parts-Which seemingly similar in feeling when turned not under load, will not translate into less wear and smoother function when loaded up with the strain from some reef pig/pelagic donkey-like the movement/flex from the Stella SW would.

    • @dcgo44r
      @dcgo44r 5 років тому +1

      Nope, that not how things work under stress! High tolerances always been critical in precise components! I think engineers don't need that kind of tolerances in a reel, but for that money.. yeah!

    Shimano changed that angle on their new reels, including the 2013 Stella SW, in a somehow controversial move. The foot of the Stella is now parallel to the main shaft, something that has caused problems to a number of users, particularly of bigger sizes 18K and up. The new parallel foot of the Stella SW meant that on standard jigging and popping rods the line would come out of the reel at such a sharp angle it would not remain seated on the line roller, which causes line damage and a weird feel when reeling. Following many complaints and a few videos that were posted by European anglers showing the issue. Source Alan Hawk in the saltiga expedition review.

    Listen, for big offshoe fishing such as marlin pitching or tuna, the 30000 is definitely worth it over the 20000. It is not much heavier than the 20000 and stacks much more line than it. I have 700 yards of 80lb on the braid and can last me for ages

    • @zander5402
      @zander5402 5 років тому

      Also the drag on the Stella’s is 55lbs. The 30000 has 44.1lbs of drag, although this is less. Who is going to use 44 lbs of drag. It is too much drag in the first place and I have never had to push either my 14000 or my 30000 especially as the 30000 stacks so much line

    I bought a 20000 Stella 12 plus years ago and it is a precision piece of engineering, not a thou of play in any part, as smooth as can be. About 2 or 3 years ago I decided to fork out for a 5000 model. I was disappointed, play in every part. The round handle even spun off center, not even close to the precise engineering of my older model. Of course I kicked up a stink and had the handle replaced and let the sales person know what I thought. I do wonder if like many things in this world maybe Shimano are simply having these latest reels manufactured cheaper and relying on their name to keep their price. Kiwis can fly!

  • @turbostyler
    @turbostyler 5 років тому

    The play mentioned exists, but has been over exaggerated for the purpose of clickbaiting. You need to have a degree of backlash in the gearing for the reel to function properly. I have both a Stella and Saltiga and the latter does have slightly tighter back lash overall. I also have a spheros and saragosa and whilst they are great reels the drag systems are not in the same league as the top tier reels, and they have issues with the drag clicker, and the saragosa has a weird balancing issue in the 10k plus sizes. I also have a fin nor lethal lt100 which is a $100 reel and its fantastic for smoothness and has great drag. Each reel has a purpose, simply stating that someone should get x over y because y is lighter, is better sealed, or better drag isn't a good recommendation as you have to look at what that reel is going to be used for.

    I can use rifles to probably explain the "play" in the reel. People don't like how "sloppy" the bolt of how any Mauser type rifle feels. Its wobbly and has a ton of play. Everybody prefers how smooth a bolt on a Tikka feels for example, with very little play. But that play is there for a reason, and when sand, mud and other grit get on that bolt, the Mauser will always operate as it was intended. The Tikka will not. I suspect the Stella is the same. If Shimano built it without, a single grain of sand could cause it to bind up.

    For a $1500 hammerhead reel, I better get inconel stainless steel gears, 4340 steel shaft, gaskets and o rings everywhere, water proof to 30 feet certified, double sealed and super greased up tungsten bearings, forged 7075-T6 aluminum body, grade 5 titanium rotor, magnetic bail, double sealed triple Kevlar drag discs up to 70lbs, baked on chemical finish, ZERO play EVERYWHERE/ANYWHERE, no plastic/abs, my signature etched in the body and rotor, a 10 year transferable warranty, spare rotor and small parts.

    When I use and/or exam their $200-$500 baitcasters, I can see the money. It makes sense. I just don’t see $1000 in the Stella. Never have. To each their own.

    Juno, Enjoyed your assessment. I have a question I can't find an answer to; I have a Stella 2500S. Is it possible to put a different spool on it that would allow me to put more line on?

    Yup, Daiwa Dogfight, Expedition or Penn Torque 2 all day. Still haven't seen the Makaira being sold, and I'm not a fan of the fixed handle like the Van Staals since I'm left-handed.

    Hey, great video, very well thought out and presented. But, please stop saying "go ahead" and "went ahead". Those are usually fill in words that don't mean anything. "I'm going to go ahead and go to the store" vs "I am going to the store" See what I mean? I know it is a style of speaking that has taken over younger generations but it is very irritating to us old folks. Keep up the good work.

      jbirdsall99 Good points! I’m always working on my public speaking, if you saw the amount of “takes” it required me to piece together a 15 min video, you’d laugh 😂

    The worst part about buying a Shimano reel is accepting that you should have bought a Daiwa instead.

      a 30k stella costs as much if not more than a dogfight. here in australia anyway.

    • @DanEvan

      JunoRyan I work at shop in the US that sells both. A dogfight 8000h is $1099.00, and both the Stella18000SWBHG and 20k are $1259.00. A Saltiga 6500h is $999.95 / Stella 14000 is $1159.99
      Hope that helps
