    Mono blue Tron is surprisingly cheap for such a competitive deck. While still not quite tier 1, it is still extremely powerful, and it can also serve as a great intro point into the format for those that love to play control.
    In fact, for the fanatic blue player, this deck offer precise, almost clockwork control. It can also serve as way to start building towards the more powerful, but much, much more expensive Red Green Tron.
    Running at about $150, many of these components can be had on the cheap, and a few of the more costlier pieces might already be in your binder.
    The heart of this deck are the Urza lands, bring one of each into play and you have 7 colorless mana from three lands. With mana money like that, you can buy your way to victory.
    The win conditions of this deck have a beautiful toolkit like nature.
    Unlike its bigger brother, Red Green Tron, Mono blue keeps several win conditions handy for different situations. Treasure Mages select the tool you need to win the game you are playing, and Academy Ruins will bring them back as much as you need them.
    This is not a deck for those who don't love playing control. Emphasis on the word love. You need to be a control fanatic to appreciate and enjoy the precise construction of this deck. As such, this deck is not for everyone. Even with its relatively low cost, I always recommend players interested in tron proxy a deck first, and practice a lot to see how they like it. Depending on your play style, you'll find it to be either a thing of clockwork beauty, or, or a rusty machine whose gears keep grinding.

    This was my first modern deck, I was looking to get back in modern and saw this video, having the tron lands and liking controle games this was nice starting point. Still play it but the deck grew in its own shape over the years. For a blue deck it is now a argo u tron; more agressive contole if I can call it that. Thanks for the great reboost.

    You mention you must have a way to win the game when you have Mindslaver Lock active. However, you don't need a win-condition, that is the win in itself.
    Every turn you are drawing the same exact card and your opponent draws a new card. This means that they will deck themselves and you will not. And as you are controlling their turn their is no way they can kill you.
    This is considered an infinite combo and a Judge will give you a win if called and you can show how you will repeat each time without your opponent being able to respond.

    • @TolarianCommunityCollege
      @TolarianCommunityCollege  10 років тому +22

      Matt Burica You are 100% right and I messed up my explanation of that. I meant that you needed to understand that a lock IS the ability to win. I've seen newer players (or folks borrowing a friend's deck) get called on it and not be able to explain it. Basically, I meant what you said. Everyone look over here! Here! (points at Matt). That. ;)

    I am so happy you posted this. I was going to do a video request from you for this deck and you beat me to it! I am new to Modern and I have been testing this deck out on Cockatrice with decent success against T1 decks. The pilot of a deck has a lot to do with it of course but I am still happy to see this have some steam against them unlike some T2 decks which sit comfortably there. I also tested 8rack (which I later saw your video on and enjoyed btw) and I had a lot of fun testing online with that but I became somewhat bored of it. Aside from learning the best things to Thoughtseize or IoK the deck sort of plays the same against most other decks and is rather linear in that sense. Mono U Tron feels like it has many intricacies that can give you an advantage once you learn them and make you a much stronger force with the deck. Game to game it is a completely different experience. That is just my opinion though, thanks for the great videos!

    Professor,this is a very analytical and well presented template! Congratulations on your truly wonderful creation with the really funny introduction! However, watching this video did made me feel compelled to humbly ask you if you could please in the near on more distant future present a blue-white control modern deck. I know that in general control decks are not as successful and widely appearing in modern, but in my humble opinion I believe that magic players should not abandon or dismiss control that easily. Aggro and generally fast or combo decks have made a very strong impact on the format, such as mono red aggro or affinity and splinter twin respectively and now the modern version of abzan has made its appearance, but in the recent years there are few to no true control decks in the first positions of grand prix tournaments.

  • @Azraaiyl
    @Azraaiyl 8 років тому

    A suggestion I have to new tron players are to keep in mind the meta that is within your area. For example I face a heavier aggro format in my locals, so I run thought-knot seers to ensure I keep them from swarming with things like pack rat. I also recommend dropping a talisman to 2 (either progress or dominance works in this regard) and instead go with another academy ruins if you run into a lot of landhate. And as the good professor stated this is only a template so experiment with friends or on forums and keep on testing, the beauty of this deck is its versatility. (Or just throw in an ulamog or 2 for funsies)

    Hello to any people watching from 2017 and on! Well, first off, this deck got expensive. But still affordable and can be put together with a decent build at around $200-300 and for a "perfect" build (varying by meta) around $400-500. So here I will list a deck tech for the version which I have which is the more expensive one.
    1 solemn simulacrum/ Thought-knot seer
    1 wurmcoil engine
    1 batterskull
    2 mindslaver
    1 platinum angel
    1 sundering titan
    1 ugin, the spirit dragon
    2 treasure mage
    1 snapcaster mage
    2 chalice of the void
    1 oblivion stone
    4 expedition map
    4 thirst for knowledge
    1 epiphany at the drownyard
    4 remand
    4 condescend
    3 repeal
    1 spell burst
    1 cyclonic rift
    1 academy ruins
    1 oboro, palace in the clouds
    1 ghost quarter
    1 tectonic edge
    8 island
    4 Urza's mine
    4 Urza's tower
    4 Urza's power plant
    And for the sideboard
    2 hurkyl's recall
    1 wurmcoil engine
    1 negate
    2 chalice of the void
    1 filigree familiar
    2 spreading seas
    2 relic of progenitus
    2 spatial contortion
    2 dismember
    That's about it. Please comment suggestions or comments if you want. Always open to them. Thanks, and have a great day

Somehow finding a real budget competitive Legacy deck must be a crazy task, because so far I think the lowest price point of a deck can only be in the $500 - $1000 at least that's what I think. Pact of Negation as an option? I really like that Counter, and the Mana Cost on the Upkeep is really easy to handle with Tron. Yeah, I know it's risky, but that's half the fun. :P
    And if you could afford to squeeze a Snapcaster in, you would right?

      +victoryiamjay I have one that I am slowly switching to naya burn. the mono red was pretty cheap with the bolts and such being the most expensive. then to red/white where paths (sideboard) are the most expensive. Mono red you don't have to worry about shocklands or fetches which are the reason for decks getting stupid expensive. That is what is taking so long for me to reach naya burn. It goes from like 100$ for my deck to like 500-600$

    Quick question, would this deck be considered a ramp/ control deck? Or just ramp or just control
    Watches in 2019: costs $260 ):
    Also can this deck do well at my LGS? My LGS is mainly made up of phoenix decks and control decks
    Sorry for so many questions but can you by any chance post a guide to this deck/ Tron decks in general (:

    You don't need to have a win con on the field when you get the mind slaver lock going- you just wind up not doing anything on their turn, and not doing anything on yours except for recurring mindslaver, and you mill them to death. Mind laver goes to the top of your library each turn, so you don't actually draw, in the sense that your library size isn't changing.

    Living End? It's decent-good at FNM, but cheaper then most modern decks, save some variants of burn and infect. The budget version of it is roughly $80 or so. Compared to Eggs, the "combo" is easier to understand.

    As a question, would it be an idea to splash a bit of white into your landbase, and then use Mana Tithe in some numbers to add a tiny bit more super early counterspell? I know it's only one to a counter unless they pay one, but on turn one or two, that can be a big issue given the situation, and from my understanding of modern from those around me who play it, turn one and two are usually important for a lot of decks. Just curious on your thoughts on it prof.

  • @Dockvg
    @Dockvg 9 років тому

    You can still win if you don't have a win condition and you've locked your opponent. Simply make him draw his entire library and tap all of his lands before passing to your turn, so you make sure he isn't going to respond. Since mindslaver will always be on the top of your deck, there's no risk of drawing the entire library before he does. Also, don't forget to see his sideboard while controling his turn.

      Thaddius DJ Blitz Ho Very, very, VERY excited about the fetchlands reprints. They were previously NOT in Modern, but now that they've been reprinted, they will be. That's what gets me going. Hmmm...wonder what non-mono decks are now much more affordable because of this...

      Tolarian Community College There is a possibility modern might drive up the prices of the new ally color fetches. It wouldn't be completely from left field, but I'm almost certain that the price won't drop so much, as the demand is going to be extremely high for the reprints.

    • @Sheriff_K
      @Sheriff_K 10 років тому +1

      Chase Unfried I'm hoping this somewhat stabilizes the prices between the Zen and Khan Fetches.. Most Decks in Modern would probably want to run 1 from each, Ally and Enemy Fetchlands. (Cuz currently some Decks run sub-optimal Fetches just for 1 Colour) So I can't wait to see how these will shake things up.

    • @0Asterite0

Mono green infect, Mono blue merfolk, mono blue urza tron, Mono white soul sisters or mono red wins? I am trying to make an original deck that none of my 12 year old friends #grade7nerds have. I am a competitive and casual modern/standard player who currently runs red green dragon and blue black control. I would love your opinion professor! THANKS!

    perilous vault is quite strong as a budget replacement for oblivion stone. Perilous Vault gives you exile over destroy but could cause you to lose the mind slaver lock. Tell me your opinion prof!

  • @tmpcreep1856

    if you can complete the lock you win. Each turn you put Mindslaver on the top of your library while slowly milling your opponent and tapping their lands.

    Calling gr tron the big nrother of the blue version is legit, but calling it stricly superior would be a big mistake ! At the moment, the monoblue version would be my version of choice for any big tournament, because of it's way better matchup against fast combodeck like twin and storm.

    As someone who's played the deck for some time, I'm very curious about the decision to include Talisman of Progress over Talisman of Dominance. A key sideboard card for this deck is Dismember. While not vital enough to warrant main-deck space, the cheap spot removal is very desirable in certain matchups. Being able to pay 1 less life point to pay for the Phyrexian mana in Dismember's cost by tapping Talisman of Dominance for B is enough to warrant playing it.
    I'm also curious about the decision to include a full 4 copies of Treasure Mage. From what I've seen, the majority of players only play 1 copy, with some choosing to include a 2nd. However, I've never seen more than 2.

    • @TolarianCommunityCollege
      @TolarianCommunityCollege  10 років тому +1

      Jon Mathison I think those are some really good tips. When I present these builds, I mean them as a general template. I do a lot of research and try to create a general version of the deck for people to start with. This list has not been fine tuned, in other words. It's meant for someone who does not play Modern at all, but wants to, to use as a great starting point for building their first deck, or perhaps their first more competitive deck within the format.

  • @TyrisAscendant
    @TyrisAscendant 9 років тому

    For people who are interested in the deck these days the lists have shifted a little with the meta and the printings of new cards. Unfortunately the deck is no longer that budget costing closer to $300-400 for a good version.
    Spatial Contortion is extremely good in this deck against the decks worst match ups (small creature match ups) like elves, goblins, affinity and merfolk. The merfolk match up is still awful though. Chalice of the Void is also extremely effective against many of the decks in the format and should be run instead of the ramp, this will require you to go up on lands to 24-25 though. Thought Knot Seer is better than Solemn Simulacrum in almost all situations and you can run a package Eye of Ugin to tutor your fatties along with the new Kozilek and/or Ulamog. Ugin is an absolute house in the deck and should be included for his ability to reset the board, although he can't be tutored. Other cards worthy of consideration for the deck are Fabricate, Silent Arbiter and Batterskull.
    Sideboard cards will depend on the meta but I suggest people look at Hurkyl's Recall, Negate, Pithing Needle, Aetherize, Relic of Progenitus, Torpor Orb, Dismember, Jesters Cap, Spellskite and Ratchet Bomb to name a few candidates.
