In the summer of 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber was asked by Alan Doggett, head of the Music Department at Colet court, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew immediately approached his friend Tim Rice to ask if he would write lyrics for the project. After toying with ideas about spies, 007′s and the like, Tim suggested the story of Joseph.
The first performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was on a cold winter afternoon on 1st March 1968 at the Old Assembly Hall, Colet Court, Hammersmith.
Accompanied by the School orchestra and conducted by Alan Doggett, the performance was only 15 minutes long.
It was such a success that a second performance was arranged on 12th May 1968 at Central Hall, Westminster, where Andrew’s father was the organist. Julian Lloyd Webber gave a classical recital in the first half, along with Bill Lloyd Webber. The audience of approximately 2,500 consisted mainly of parents of the Colet Court boys. To Andrew and Tim’s surprise, Derek Jewell, Jazz and Pop Critic for The Sunday Times, saw the show and wrote a favourable review of Joseph, which appeared on 19th May 1968. A third performance took place on 9th November 1968 at St Paul’s Cathedral, where Joseph was expanded to include songs such as ‘Potiphar’ for the first time.

Fgffrfyyds Gsguyijxse it’s much harder to hit in succession with the lower notes going into the phrase, jumping an octave and then going back down immediately is quite a feat that takes a while for even trained tenors to get right
BlueLucario98 it’s not uncommon at all to jump like that-it’s expressed in a multitude of modern popular pieces and not hard to do at all
Fgffrfyyds Gsguyijxse jumps are very common, it’s just that with the higher the range, the more difficult it is for such a thing. “Close Every Door” is a decent example, but not quite that large of a gap, more like “Until I Hear You Sing” from Love Never Dies or “Pity the Child” from Chess is where it gets very difficult for even normal tenors.

I watched Donny Osmond perform this musical a hundred times while working as an usher at the Chicago theater. What a voice! What a talent.
Donny and the cast did a wonderful thing for the students from a local high school who were going to perform this production. While in Chicago they met with the students and many met individually with the person playing their character to go over some of the difficulties and challenges of that role. Considering this was a small high school from a small Canadian town, their generosity was overwhelmingly welcomed and appreciated. Never forgotten, always recalled with gratitude.

@@paulitamartinez4255 I didn't really have a specific one in mind when I wrote this. I was saying in general. Like this song, a lot of prayers are in minor keys and say words like "children of Israel." They also involve asking God for peace and stuff. It's also hard to find specific ones since the tunes used vary. The way my synagogue sings a prayer could be totally different than the way another one does, though there are more popular versions. Again, the orchestrations and tones are a bit more upbeat than this song, but it all depends on how you sing it. Saw Donny Osmond as Joseph in the touring production at the Chicago Theater -- he was INCREDIBLE.. Later heard Andrew Lloyd Webber say Donny Osmond was his favorite "Joseph" -- we understood: no one has his voice & he's an outstanding theatrical performer!!!

My mother, my aunt and I saw Donny Osmond as Joseph at the Chicago Theater. I was mesmerized by his fantastic performance! My mom said she wanted to come right back and see him again! And my aunt (who barely knew who Donny Osmond was) said: "that white man sings with some soul... and he looks GOOD!" x)

Best Joseph I've heard. There are other versions, but the only whose Close Every Door moved me almost to tears was Donny's. I think he sings it with more immersion in his role? Idk, but the only one that evoked emotion in me while listening to them singing was Donny's.
Seeing this recording, it's great, but to be real, it will NEVER compare to what it was like to see him in person perform this. It was a magical moment that almost seemed unreal. Something I will NEVER forget.

It's an F#4, which tenors will most likely have no trouble reaching. This guy's a baritone. He can sing pretty high though
