In the summer of 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber was asked by Alan Doggett, head of the Music Department at Colet court, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew immediately approached his friend Tim Rice to ask if he would write lyrics for the project. After toying with ideas about spies, 007′s and the like, Tim suggested the story of Joseph.
The first performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was on a cold winter afternoon on 1st March 1968 at the Old Assembly Hall, Colet Court, Hammersmith.
Accompanied by the School orchestra and conducted by Alan Doggett, the performance was only 15 minutes long.
It was such a success that a second performance was arranged on 12th May 1968 at Central Hall, Westminster, where Andrew’s father was the organist. Julian Lloyd Webber gave a classical recital in the first half, along with Bill Lloyd Webber. The audience of approximately 2,500 consisted mainly of parents of the Colet Court boys. To Andrew and Tim’s surprise, Derek Jewell, Jazz and Pop Critic for The Sunday Times, saw the show and wrote a favourable review of Joseph, which appeared on 19th May 1968. A third performance took place on 9th November 1968 at St Paul’s Cathedral, where Joseph was expanded to include songs such as ‘Potiphar’ for the first time.

He performed this production in Chicago and I took my then boyfriend/now husband to see him as a gift on Christmas Day, Our seats were one row back from the stage on the ground floor The cast was in a celebratory mood because their families were there, (an announcement had been made), they kept breaking character to greet family, so I yelled out "I love you Donny", and he yelled back pointing to me, "I love you too!" Everyone cheered. It was the Best night ever! The performance was transformative. He is the best Joseph.
Wow. I saw it just a few weeks before you folks did and my seats were 2 rows back from yours. Donny was so cute and adorable, but also fit the role. Loved him too.

Morgan Maxwell Mark McMullen is awesome in the role, and I’m a huge fan of Donny but Mark McMullen is worthy of the title ‘best Joseph’ in my opinion. But it’s all subjective and opinions only count if you’ve seen everyone play the role.

I took my mother to this, we had the best time. She has passed on, but the memory lives in for me. Donny was gorgeous!

My mother and I went to see Joseph..more than once. My mom loved it so much and would sing the songs for days after while cooking in the kitchen. My mom has passed, but I have wonderful memories of watching Joseph together and enjoying a beautiful evening together.

Mary H oh my God! If you ever are fortunate enough to get to see it, you should definitely see a Donny and Marie show! I went with one of my aunts and her best friend and it was absolutely amazing! I went to see their Christmas show or year and a half ago. They were really good! I hope you get the chance to see them.

When my son was a baby, he had to watch the video several times a day. My husband was a stay at home dad from the time he was 6 weeks old until he was 24 months old.
By the time my son entered preschool, my husband knew all of the words and had to admit that Donny Osmond was a very talented singer.
My husband is an old rocker that always thought Donny was a teen idol that was just a Tiger Beat photo op.
Now, he will tell you that Donny is a rare talent that can do anything.

It was interesting to hear Donny interviewed when he described the training he underwent to teach him how to use his voice for this role. It is to his credit that he was able to retrain and modify a singing voice he had been using for so long. In my opinion his singing improved exponentially.
It was also extremely generous of him and the cast to meet with our high school students after the show in Chicago. The soloists met one on one with the ones who would be playing the same roles in our production to provide hints and encouragement. What a treat for the young people.

My Sister and I went to see him in joseph in 1993 in vancouver canada. We had the album as children and could sing along word for word. It was awesome.
@Tim Uchwat Hi, it was amazing friend. We loved the album growing up and to see it played out on stage was absolutely out of this world. I did not know at the time but when Donny was touring as Joseph he was experiencing panic attacks. I heard about it a few years ago. All I can say is it did not show in his performance. Like I said it was amazing and a wonderful memory to think back on. Blessings
