- VIDEO DESCRIPTION - This painting tutorial will take you through easy to follow, step-by-step instructions on how to paint this stunning realistic animal portrait of "NIGHT OWL" with a fierce stare and colorful camouflage feathers. You’ll learn how to paint this rendition of a nocturnal large great horned owl as he watches over the nighttime activities with a glazed gaze. Learn how to use simple drawing and painting techniques to create good proportions and realistic dimension in the feathers, beak and eye creating a beautiful bird that symbolizes wisdom, intuition, supernatural power, independent thinking, and observant listening. You can personalize the background to look like a forest, or the sky, maybe you can put some autumn leaves around the canvas to give it a fall feel, or snow for a winter landscape. Perhaps you want to have him sitting in a tree on a large branch. You'll learn how to layer and blend the paint to create depth in the eye and texture in the feathers, which will provide a photo realistic quality allowing for the feathers and beak to have a 3d affect and to look like they are popping right out of the canvas. Acrylic Paint: titanium white, mars black, burnt umber (brown), deep yellow, cobalt blue, chrome orange
Other: #2 pencil, palette, cup of water for washing brushes, paper towel for drying brushes

STEPS:
1. pencil - Draw outline of owl
2. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint background with black
3. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint base coat of owl with brown, black and white
4. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint base coat of beak and eye with black
5. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint dark feathers with black and gray (made in step 3)
6. #1 round brush - Finish beak with gray, white, blue and black
7. #1 round brush - Finish eye with white, yellow, orange, blue, brown, black and gray
8. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint colored feathers with yellow, orange, brown and white
9. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint white feather with white, gray, yellow, orange and black
10. #1 round brush - Sign with black

Michelle, I want to thank you for this! I was camping with my sister this summer and I spotted some movement in a tree as we sat by the campfire. Hiding up in a tree was a beautiful owl, we shined a flash light on it briefly (it didn't seem to mind) and could see about half the bird just as in this picture. I working on the eye now and will finish it for a present for my sister this holiday season! I could never paint any thing like this without you!

I did it yay x but used pearly brown with the umber and a tiny bit of green in the eye too and sapphire blue . I used a bamboo toothbrush for around the eyes x thanks very much x

J ‘ ai regardé les reportages sur les attentats du WTC et j ‘ ai eu des larmes aux yeux en voyant les souffrances des gens qui ont vécu ce drame ou qui ont perdu des proches. Je me souviens très bien où j’ étais et ce que je faisais à ce terrible moment. Mais , nous avons ce formidable médium qu ‘ est la peinture pour nous changer quelque peu nos idées négatives et surtout nous vous avons ,vous , chère Michelle! Santé 🥂
C'est vrai, ce médium de la peinture m'a certainement aidé à canaliser tout sentiment ou pensée négatif en énergie positive ! Difficile à croire que 20 ans se sont écoulés depuis les attentats.
