I do agree with all of your thoughts and yet I have to say, that the XK8 is my favorite! The XJS, especially with the V12 engine, is a unique classic dreamcar - but I'd never dare to buy one thinking of its reputation. The X150 may be the more modern performance car, but performance is not what I'm looking for in a Jaguar. The XK8 has everything: a modern powerful engine, a simply gorgeous exterior and an interior that is nothing less than pure Jaguar! I'm sure, that the X150 and all modern Jags are better cars, but to me they all have lost that magic. I simply LOVE the XK8 - that's why I bought one :-) Thanks for all your videos, keep up the great work! Greetings from Vienna!
It is true that many prefer the looks of the XK8 over the later XK. The misses says the headlights on the later car are a bit wrong in shape which affects the frontal aspect, but for me, it’s the way the older car has sides that curve in and under. Very reminiscent of the e-type and making it feel a bit like the fuselage of a plane. Interestingly, the later Aluminium car is a bit heavier than some versions: Parkers specs says the steel X100 XKR (2001 4.0 Coupe) weight is 1640kg. Same site states Aluminium X150 XKR (2006 4.2 Coupe) weight is 1665kg.
As I’ve said I like the XK8 for broadly the same reasons, never thought of it like the fuselage of a plane before! I guess those barrel sides are a touch aeronautical! Interesting about the weight, never knew that, I guess with marginally more weight the x150 XKR still has better power:weight, if only slight?
For me, the stunning looks, curves and sheer street presence of the XK8/R trump anything the other two cars bring to the party. The V8 in it is simply as smooth as you could want, with the later XKRs having a seemingly endless power curve. A head above in my book to the rather under powered V12. The interior is also stunning, in its classic throw back way. On a par with the XJS. The X150 does nothing for me looks wise, either inside or out. It looks so similar to many other more 'modern' masses. For me its only ace is the lighter body design and the benefits re maintenance. Whoppy do. Yes, it has its many quirks and irritations, but like a good wife, treat them well and they will repay the kindness in spades!
...and that’s why I bought an XK8 🤣🤣 I do like the other two for different reasons as outlined but the XK8/R is a lovely looking thing inside and out like you say and you can forgive it’s foibles for all the other great things about it 👍 Thanks for the comment and for watching!
In my opinion the x100 xk is a far better looking car, is cheap to buy (in usa anyways) (my 97 convertible was under $7k and in perfect condition). Iv'e owned mine for 3 years, bought with 120k miles on it, and put about 10k more miles. Everything worked on it when I bought it and everything still works now. All I have done is drive it, change the fluids, wash and wax, and enjoy it, does not get any better than that.
Having owned an 85 XJS, a 97 XK8 coupe and currently own a 2000 XKR, I feel an XJS with the XKR engine and transmission would be amazing. You get more hp, mpg, less heat in the engine bay and the Supercharged XKR engine 4.0 or 4.2 is as smooth as the 5.3 v12.
Had an 1985 Xjs 5.3 v12 for around three years. It was always my dream car and owning one never disappointed me. I had heard all the horror stories but i didn't let that put me off. The only issue i had with mine was the starter motor went but it was 25 years old at the time. It cost me £45 for the starter and my local garage wanted £500 to fit it. But me and my mechanic friend did it ourselves. Would recommend regular services and the xjs will serve you right. I Had no rust issues and The prince of Darkness ( The Lucas system) was fine too. Only sold her as my daughter got too big to fit in the back.
@@granblogismo yes they are expensive now even for rusty ones. I wish i could have kept mine now but nevermind anyway i hope you manage to buy one just for the experience cheers
Nice comparison chat, thanks. For my money the original XK8 and then the XKR starting from 1998, designed to be "lookbacks to classics" (read E-type) are just so drop-dead gorgeous in their lines, and a classic, cosy not sporty, interior, that nothing beats them, even the later models after 2002. I don`t know of any owner who doesn't`s look back at least once after locking the door to appreciate for the thousandth time those feline structures. We should remember that a GT should be exactly that... a Grand Tourer, grand to tour in. As soon as Jaguar changed the front grill with "updates" around 2002/3 (and even the slower 4.2 litre and 4.0) that was lost I feel. Jaguar seemed to then change strategy and want to appeal to the younger crowd by stating "now this is a sports car" (not a Grand Tourer). Not to say this is wrong... many younger owners (and older-want-to-be-younger-owners) who buy the classic XK8/R`s from 1998-2002 now take off one or two sets of exhaust dampers to allow the "brrrm brrm I`m a sports car " sound (sorry, maybe I should have said "growl"). That's OK if that`s what you need, and yes it's soooo sexy but... there`s a reason the classic versions have double sound cancelling mufflers. The contemplated driver then did not want to make a loud fuss, he is happy knowing that when he presses down it will "give enough wellie" and Mrs.Smith down the lane would start to get very fidgety if her neighbour started scaring the sheep. So... there`s the difference... not better or worse, just your choice of what suits you. I`m 63 now and just bought a 1999 launch colour Phoenix Red XKR from 1999 with less than 14,000 miles on the clock (one of the advantages of living in hard working Japan where nobody has the time to drive their cars but everybody looks after them so well so they all look like new). It looks and even smells new. I have never sought attention, I have never been a "car person"... but now... I have suddenly become a "really interesting person with a really interesting car"... because I`m driving this most gorgeous vehicle. Stay safe!
I have a triple black Celebration Roadster 1996 that took me almost 2 years of aggressive hunting. 56k miles from California, won 2nd place all British car show twice. I also have a triple black 03 XK8 (modern day E-Type) 4.2 just fabulous. A thing of beauty is a JOY. FOREVER. !!!!!
I’ve had an 09 XK convertible 4.2 since new. Amazing car, drives like a dream and have never had any issues with it. It was a daily driver up until recently and cannot part with it. XJS was always a dream car but based on the horror stories and cost of maintaining opted for a new model when I decided to buy.
Nice! I keep passing an 08 XK convertible on my running route.... it’s a very nice car that I’m starting to covet 🙈 I’ll need to start saving again, thanks for the comment! 👍
I mostly agree with the presenter - X100 is the best looking of the three although I still rreceive almost daily compliments on my '95 XJS drop head, perhaps because it doesn't look like anything else and it is handsome. For traveling long distances the "S" is fine but I worry about parts/service availability if something should go south while in the boonies, especially as it has 150,000+ miles on it. Rarely any problems, but time will eventually catch up with her. Therefore the '08 X150 R coupe in a frost blue (or whatever they called in that year) is the current choice for long distance touring, and it gets the inquiries/compliments also, including young kids in their tuned "fast and furious" rice burners. I now need a replacement drop top for long distance nice weather touring, so the debate within myself is an X100 R or X150 (R if pre 2010). The obvious answer is both, but space limitations (and cash) preclude that option for now. There are worse dilemmas to have.......
My kinda guy . .. I jus bought a 97 xk8 and I'm dealing with limp mode . Engine fault poor performance. :/ Hopefully not too difficult too tackle. ...not too syked about it .
Had an XJR-S and preferred my XK8 to it. Just returned to an XK8 after 14 years and to get an XK wasn't an option as the interiors are too Ford Mondeo for my liking. (Cruel comparison but the dash and console is just bog standard). Preferred the ashtray position in the XJR-S!
Nice! If I get the opportunity I’d love to have a look/ride in one, someone else commented that they had one that I could have a look at, I should follow up on that!!
Looks are subjective. I recently bought an 07 convertible. Its beautiful. Photos do not do it justice. I give the older versions a definite edge when looking at the car head on. But I like the side and rear quarter views of the 07 better. Much better. The first x150 I looked at was Radiance Red with chrome rims...dealer thought I was nuts when I told him I wouldn't buy it because it was too pretty. The ceramic finish made it shine like jewelry. I bought an Indigo blue one with caramel interior instead. I have owned it for over six months and still go out to the garage just to look at it. The interior is roomier and more comfortable than previous years - and looks phenomenal. The ride and driving experience is incredible. Anyone thinking about buying one - do it. It is debatable if any car is worth its 88K original msrp, but you can now find low mileage examples of this car for 15-20k. That's stealing.
Absolutely! The newer shape XK is really nice 👍 and beauty is in the eye of the beholder as you state, that’s what I love about cars, so many styles and shapes to suit different tastes ☺️
any opinions on a 2005 xj8 aluminum body car with an aftermarket(oem, jag xjr) supercharger? Best of both worlds? aluminum body xjr? wow. with top end deletes? 210mph possible? My 03 xj8 does 160 mph+, no supercharger.
I am enjoying your videos Mark. The best things about the XK are under the skin, not that it's ugly by any means but there is something about the fact it's closely related to the Callum DB7 design wise yet not as cool. The XK8 design has uniqueness in its favour and still looks v dramatic. The XK 5.0 v8 is a superb engine and the ZF 6 speed is instant. Also the adaptive suspension works really well on my variety of local roads. So the engineering is simply excellent in the XK150 and somewhat under appreciated imo. Green ones are nice in any variant :)
Hi Sean, thanks for the comment! I would dearly love an XK, dynamically excellent and people are tending to opt for those or the XKR of that shape over the DB9 these days as it makes better sense as an ownership proposition and not a whole lot in it performance-wise! Cheers for watching, hopefully bringing some more XK8 content soon if we’re ever allowed to leave our houses!
I loved my XJS but it's was getting old and it bothered me so it got sold . Now the XK is on top of my list like a 2010 low miles. Don't drive much and think it make a good daily driver . Thank you , good review ..
Interesting opinion! I did have a choice between the XJS and XK8 and I nearly went for the S but in research I decided for my own reasons to get the XK8 Mainly for looks. Like you having a V12 is very tempting but the maintenance is bit more then what I am comfortable with doing it myself. As a investment I think the XK8 will do better then the XJ6 and it seems the XK8 has hit the bottom now and is starting to rise for really good examples. Be interesting to see a side by side appreciation of these 2 models. Driving a XK8 is a much better experience then the XJS in my opinion. Nice video maybe a do a in depth video on your MGB GT your history with it and experience driving a classic today?
Yeah I think I agree, that’s why I chose an XK8, I would dearly love all 3 to be honest 😂 The XJS is an important car too since it was the foundation for the XK8 and the DB7 so we have to be thankful for it, it definitely puts the ‘grand’ in ‘grand touring’ as well with the V12... I think I’m convincing myself to get one now lol 😂
I had a 6.0 ltr XJS for 7 years and loved it and very reliable. For the last 8 years I have had a 4.2 XK8 convertible which I also love. I would say the XJS was slightly more comfortable but less dynamic than the XK8. Power was the same but get double the MPG from the V8. Both great cars. I also like the X150 but don't like the price of the road tax and prefer the traditional interior of the XK8
Interesting comparisons. I love all three, I had a 6.0 XJS which was fabulous but I have always been a V8 fan. So I have a 4.2 XK8 convertible with sports exhaust, interestingly it has the same power as the V12 but get 30+ mpg with the V8 and only 18-20 MPG with the V12. I love the interior of the XK8 much better than the X150 and the road tax puts me of the 150 which is almost double that of the XK8. But if I wanted an every day car, then maybe the X150 would be better,
Let's be honest, we'd have all three if we could :) They are all fabulous looking cars. If the right one came up I'd get an XJS as I just really like the old / slightly unusual looks... it's interesting to look at even when still. An 80s 3.6 would do the job I think.
Hi Mark - I have a 2010 5.0 XK coupe and was inspired by your recent North wales road trip. As long as we aren't all under a curfew in a few weeks time I'll be re-tracing your tyre tracks. I think that the XK8 is a very graceful car and I was on the look out for one before opting for the XK, which has all of the modern toys, which lured me over from the XK8. The ride on the XK is more sports car-like and personally, I don't think it's as good a long-distance tourer than the XK8, a combination of the low profile tyres and suspension set-up I suspect. I often wonder if a convertable XK8 would fit on our driveway, alongside the XK and the other family cars. I probably wouldn't drive it that much, but they are such beautiful cars that just owning one and driving it on sunny days with the top down would be a dream come true. Keep up with the channel content - always interesting and well put together.
Thanks very much for the comment! Yes Wales was a lot of fun so worth a visit especially in better weather, the XK would be great on those mountain passes! Yeah I like both models, ideally I’d have an X150 XKR or a 5.0 XK to go alongside my X100 as I think I’d enjoy the performance but space and budget are a limiting factor 🤣 thanks for watching!
Good points you make, I think. It`s really a case of what one wants... a "grand, quiet but powerful tourer" or a "sporty driving sports car". Not better or worse... just a choice. Jaguar (Ford) tried to predict the market demands and make what they thought people would want. In general they did a jolly fine job over time I think. Stay safe!
Thanks Mark, that was interesting. I have a (XK150) XKR but as I think I have previously commented I prefer the old school look of the interior of the XK8 with the wood and leather instead of the later brushed aluminium of the XK. The XJS is a wonderful looking car, but is probably too mechanically complex to be looked after at home so will need lots of garage time to keep it going and that will be expensive. The one thing I don't like about my XK is the amount of electrical extras crammed into the car, all waiting to go wrong. It is as though Jaguar over engineered the XK150, someone commented that it was like an XK8 on steroids for its looks, and I think that also applies to the electrics, though I'm biased as I have had electrical problems with mine. Would welcome some more car comparison videos from you, thanks again. Paul
Glad you found it interesting, I really like the x150 and the XJS, sorry to hear you’ve had some issues but I think that’s the norm with modern cars as they become more and more complicated! Someone mentioned electrical issues are the new rust! Still, even with problems the XKR must be an awesome performer and still great to look at 😊👍 thanks for the comment!
Nice video brother 🤗 My every day hack is a xk150. I have to say though both the kx100s and 150s are both fantastic cars in there own right. One is not better than the other imo. You like what you like and any of them are to be cherished. 🤘 I have a couple of old italian cars, and of course the more modern italians are classed as "better". However if I had wanted a more modern one I would have bought one due to my old Italian's are now worth more that more modern Italians by some 20 years. A 2019 ferrari may be classed as a "better" car than any other before it, however a 1960s 250 SWB or a 1970s 246 dino are both better ferraris.🤗 Old is gold baby, old is gold😁
You’re right, it’s all a matter of perspective and personal taste, that’s why after I made my ‘I like my XK8’ video I wanted to bring a bit of balance with this one, that’s what makes cars/classic cars so interesting to me, the variety and people’s affinity to a brand model (even irrationally) is fascinating, thanks for the comment and for watching! 👍😎
The V 12 too complex with reguards to maintenance and reliability issues, 4 ltr six way better for reliability and more economical, the xk's lost me when the dashboard disposed of the woodwork, the XK8 looks like the true modern replacement for the E type, modern reliable engine, good enough to have as a daily driver, and if compared to a db7 a better lookin car as well as a better car to drive according to the youtube roadtests of the day.
Yes I don’t think the XJS V12 would be too practical for the home mechanic, I’m obviously a fan of the XK8 but if I had the space and the funds any of those other cars would be great stablemates 🤣
This is so weird but I'll toss in my own dose of weirdness. First off, the XJS doesn't even rate in a comparison for styling with the XK8 and XK. It's engine is another matter. As for a styling comparison between the XK8 and XK, the former was a good effort. The latter worked out all the shortcomings and solidified the most beautiful Jaguar since the XKE.
Living in Canada, winter = salt and various corrosive brines on the road. ANYBODY who would drive one of these beautiful cars in winter, should seek psychiatric counselling. Buy a German SUV with galvanized body panels and your Jaguar will last FOREVER.

Oh yes and good suggestion about the MG video, I think I probably will do something like that now you’ve mentioned it 🤣 thanks!
But if I wanted an every day car, then maybe the X150 would be better,
Yep! The only answer is to have one of each 🤣 thanks for the comment!
Let's be honest, we'd have all three if we could :) They are all fabulous looking cars. If the right one came up I'd get an XJS as I just really like the old / slightly unusual looks... it's interesting to look at even when still. An 80s 3.6 would do the job I think.
Yep! 😎👍
100% agree...well said!
Nice video brother 🤗
My every day hack is a xk150. I have to say though both the kx100s and 150s are both fantastic cars in there own right. One is not better than the other imo. You like what you like and any of them are to be cherished. 🤘
I have a couple of old italian cars, and of course the more modern italians are classed as "better". However if I had wanted a more modern one I would have bought one due to my old Italian's are now worth more that more modern Italians by some 20 years.
A 2019 ferrari may be classed as a "better" car than any other before it, however a 1960s 250 SWB or a 1970s 246 dino are both better ferraris.🤗
Old is gold baby, old is gold😁
You’re right, it’s all a matter of perspective and personal taste, that’s why after I made my ‘I like my XK8’ video I wanted to bring a bit of balance with this one, that’s what makes cars/classic cars so interesting to me, the variety and people’s affinity to a brand model (even irrationally) is fascinating, thanks for the comment and for watching! 👍😎
Sorry but I still prefer the XK8 100, imo it has nicer body styling than the XJS or even the later XK’s which look a little like an XK8 on steroids.
No need to apologise, we like what we like! Thanks for watching and I prefer the x100 looks-wise as well obviously 🤣
It was a 50p piece balanced
The XJS is the only one that is a classic. The other two are technically better, but lack soul and character. Sorry, they’re just modern cars.
Living in Canada, winter = salt and various corrosive brines on the road. ANYBODY who would drive one of these beautiful cars in winter, should seek psychiatric counselling. Buy a German SUV with galvanized body panels and your Jaguar will last FOREVER.
Needs to stop saying "err" and "erm" so much.
Thanks Mike, it’s something I feel I’ve improved on in later videos, thanks for the comment
