  • Brett Sims, one of the strongest PFP athletes, shares his secrets for developing insane grip strength! The goal of this video is to find a correlation between individual lifts and bodyweight hold performance. You can see us determining the maximum lift for each hand individually and attempting bodyweight holds.

    As a physics person, surface area quite often affects the coefficient of friction, so even though it's not in that equation, it is often "hidden" within the coefficient itself having a dependency on pressure (and thus area). With rubbery surfaces on hard surfaces (car tyres on a road definitely, and maybe skin on a grip? I don't know) the coefficient of friction reduces with increasing pressure, so you MIGHT get more bang for your buck by going with a larger surface area. In engineering, we like to simplify things down to coefficients, but that doesn't mean the coefficient is a constant! In fact it rarely is. Another example is springs (spring constants are rarely actually constant) or lift and drag coefficients in aerodynamics, they use velocity and density to turn lift and drag into coefficients, but often the coefficient itself is dependent on velocity.

      That usually happens when you bring material strenght into the system. Rubber just fails at some point and the friction then happens inside the Rubber material and it shears off where areas with theoretically higher friction are. Thus the black stripes... At least in my head it works that way.

      @@heinzgrasser7120 you're correct, the rubber rolling off the surface of the tire is what causes tires to lose grip. Actually, just a little bit of slip is better for traction (due to some property I can't remember) so the insanely fast vehicles will allow a small amount of slip to maximize their launch

    Its interesting that you could lift more weight with both hands at the same time rather than individually. Usually it is the reverse and it is called the bilateral limb deficit in the scientific literature (you are comparatively weaker when using both limbs than when adding both individual weights). I wonder if it is because in one exercise you are lifting the weight up rather than pulling your whole bodyweight.

    You should try what you max lift is when lifting with two hands.

    Connective tissue does not exactly recover slower than muscles as it is fatigue resistant, but certain adaptations take much longer to exhibit and any damage to the tissue takes much longer to heal due to poor bloodflow. What this means is training the fingers lacks many of the markers of fatigue such as loss of force production or reduction in power, and we can accumulate excessive volume with rather poor stimulus even though the numbers remain high.
    For most purposes, you should end any session on the fingers prior to whatever indicator you usually use for muscles and be aware of sudden changes in grip position throughout an effort.

    Hello! I want to clarify a small detail. You said that "The surface area doesn't have anything to do with the friction force", but that's not that relevant to the example you showed in the video, because the smaller the surface area of contact, the BIGGER the force that is applied directly to the skin's surface per each square milimiter of the skin.
    Two times smaller the area, two times bigger the force that is stretching the skin on the fingers, which causes more discomfort and more pain. If you were to hold the weight with just the tips of your fingers, it would be even more painful.
    It's kinda similar to the concept of you being able to lie on thousands of iron needles. If you were to lie on one needle, your entire weight would concentrate on just a tiny tip, and the force of the entire weight will be converted into pressure on a hundred's part of a square milimiter, so that it will easily tear your skin. If you were to lie on 2 needles, the pressure would be two times lower, and if you would lie on 5000 iron needles, the pressure would be 5000 times lower, so lying would be painful but manageable, and on 500000 anatomically adjusted iron needles, it would feel as if you're lying on a feather.
    For example, if you have an object with the mass of 10 kilograms in your hand, and your hand has the maximum contact area of 50 square centimetres of skin, that would equal to around 98 neutons of force applied per the entire hand. If you would only take it with half the hand, it would multiply the pressure by two, so that what felt like 10 kilograms would feel as if you held 20 kilograms. If you would take it even further and would try to hold the same mass with just a finger and a thumb, (assuming 1 square centimetre per each) in total, it would feel as if you have 98*(50/(1+1)) = 2450 neutons of force (or around 250 kg) of pressure, even though the total mass would stay 10 kg! Holding 10 kg with one finger is as painful as holding 250 kg with an entire hand. 10 kg vs 20 kg vs 250 kg, that's a huge difference! The surface area DOES matter!
    That is why holding the board with the entire hand, and not with just the fingers, feels significantly more comfortable. Because the bigger the surface area, the lower is the pressure applied to each of the square milimiter of your skin, which means less pain and more comfort.

  • @sealpiercing8476
    @sealpiercing8476 25 днів тому

    As a physicist, I can say that many relevant surface combinations don't have a constant coefficient of friction. Contact mechanics are often much more complicated. There's no substitute for realistic testing of the surfaces of interest, especially since hands have their own nontrivial mechanics. Don't assume you aren't observing something real, the reason equations like that are in intro textbooks is because they're simple, not because they describe everything.

    Anton I think the front lever helps too. I do this too sometimes at my climbing gym and I'm able to hold much longer in a front lever. It may have something to do with the fact that your whole body wants to rotate, so it pusher your fingers against the board, giving you more pressure. Also the legs going up to get in the front lever lock might be helping to with momentum

    • @michiel5160
      @michiel5160 4 місяці тому

      And hang requires more shoulders mobility - especially with narrow grip - than front lever. Maybe that has something to do with it.

    Very interesting that most of you actually did better with 2 hands than the combined with 1 hand. In most similar exercises it it actually the opposite. For example something like pull-ups, usually people can go for 1 arm pull-up when they are at around +70% of their bodyweight with regular weighted pull-ups etc. I think it has to do with you guys back and shoulders both getting involved more when pulling over head and also being very strong for you lot since you climb a ton.

    14:13 With both hands you might also be able to create additional friction from your shoulders by rotating the arms a bit outward.
    The not-as-vertical position you and Brett assumed for hanging does look like you're squeezing your arms inward more and really engage your lats, which does produce rotation in the arms against each other and thus more friction on your hands.

    Kyle hill has a video about that crimp hold and the physics behind it. (33% of Rock Climbing Injuries are the Same. Why?) You use the triangle shape your fingers make to create a rotating force pushing the finger tip into the object youre holding. Focusing the pressure on a smaller spot could work if the surface rough enough.

    We need to kill the incorrectly applied physics law that surface area doesn't affect friction. In any case where the surface of the thing that friction is being applied to is less than perfect, and the thing applying the friction is capable of filling these voids, this poorly applied physics concept does not have any value.
